Hello again. I'm a little bit confused. Weren't we allowed to use ascending minor 6ths in the first species? The same goes for octaves...I thought we could use octave leaps freely before. You explained this in the melodic considerations slide in the previous video about the first species. Can you help clarify? Thanks so much!

Yes, you can use ascending minor sixths and octaves. You just want to limit how often they are used. A guideline is no more than 1-2 leaps per counterpoint.
More than likely, I was explaining how some instructors and methods will allow the use of all 6ths, such as will the Salzer text on composition. Other texts like Fux, allow you to use the octave but restrict the 6th to an ascending minor 6th only.
What you need to know about leaps is this: the ascending minor sixths is acceptable in all practices and so is the octave. You should also avoid leaping more than an octave, as that is not allowed in any practice of 16th or 18th cent. counterpoint.
