This current regime won't admit it or accept it (because they have history in this), but England disrespected Sri Lanka. The players, management, the media, the fans all were talking about another 3-0 whitewash during the game. And whether you like it or not, the ONLY chatter seems to be about the NEXT ASHES. Every selection, every performance, every injury etc is always measured in terms of how it affects the next Ashes. It is this arrogance that makes England such a hated team abroad. Yet time and time again they get a pasting from teams like India (and now lowly S Lanka) who take the Ashes talk very personally. Yes, it might be the most important fixture in the English calendar - but don't be surprised when your non-Aussie opposition decides to take it out on England! Imagine the Lankans had a proper tour build-up? Totally deserved. Been happening for years and the arrogance and disrespect of other opposition will continue
It was what Sri Lanka deseved...always felt throughout the series they would have one bad day that would ruin their chances. They exploited English weaknesses well and in one case, given the Aussies the ammunition to get Brook out cheaply. I hope they can build on this win
George - to balance things out - I as an England fan (and most of my friends who follow cricket) are not impressed by this lax style of play and the lack of value some of our team seem to place on their wicket. The cricket they played this week was just awful. Well played though to Sri Lanka - hope they now go from strength to strength.
Rob Key really comes off as someone who isn't interested in tolerating dissent. The English cricket media's complete adoration of the Bazball era has been pathetic to watch. Alastair Cook's team won in India not so long ago, Strauss won in Australia. This side couldn't win in New Zealand, couldn't win the Ashes at home, and lost 4-1 in India.
Q - what has ‘Bazball’ achieved. England couldn’t beat Aus. at home or NZ away and were soundly beaten by India away. They are mid table in the test Champ. Yet if you believed the hype and the increasingly uncritical Sky commentary team you would think they were world beaters!
I always believe that england is not that much strong ... And its not just bcoz they lost this match but there are some reasons actually .... Root is main piller of this batting line-up and ducket is also a quite consistent on making valuable runs but apart from this two guys no one is that much capable yes jamy smith is looking great he is supporting from down the order but if you get root and ducket early than they are always in trouble ... If you look at first match of the series then you see that england won it by 5 wickets but root was there to finish the job but things would have been different if root wasn't there... It was big big chance for Sri lanka to win that match... Yes stokes wasn't there and wood also but it shows the bench strength of this team ... And to be honest it was Sri lanka who lost it by 1-2 otherwise if it was any other stronger team like india or australia or Africa even ... England would have lost this series surely
Sri Lanka played well for most of the match.I feel that England let themselves down and with their performance and would have likely lost against most other teams as well.
Will they ever learn. Some of the batting is of village green standard . Needs to be said mcculum and stokes need to be told but they are both arrogant and wont admit. Lawrence has opener this is just crazy.
I think they believe they don’t have to care a lot for how they bowl because they will somehow get wickets and their are so good with bat they can score anything
This kind of brain fade batting will cost England another Ashes . Since they won't draw unless it's rain affected, don't see England winning 3 in Aus with this batting and also 1-D bowling with no real spin options. Bashir is way too green and inconsistent.
Great clips guys and totally agree sentiments with batting just a session.... the England bowlers will get destroyed Down Under as they need to bat 150 overs type of innings
If England turn up to Australia 10 days before the series starts and only have 1 warm up game, they haven’t got a hope in hell of winning the series or even a game
The thort of England YET AGAIN failing to even win a Test (and therefore losing 4-0 or 5-0) is truly depressing. I cannot quite accept it will be again that bad. 5-0, 4-0, 4-0 then 5-0 or 4-0….😫
England always had average players over 150 years so whenever they get an above average cricketer they hype them like anything.. Same for bazball.. Every team who has dominated played aggressive cricket from West Indies, australia, india, south Africa.. So english average batters can't play properly and they survive by slogging Or swinging for everything..
I agree with your general sentiment but must point out that over the 148 years of test cricket England has had a number of well above average players but very few in the past 50. No-one had to hype, for example, Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe, Wally Hammond, Len Hutton or Fred Trueman; their performances spoke for them. Since Fred we've had ...hype. Botham and Flintoff were excellent and had fan appeal but their records dont hold up against the genuine greats. Currently the pundits are hyping Anderson Root and Stokes. If Root can have a decent series in Oz next time he would merit being called "great". Anderson's main claim to fame is his test haul but that's because he played far more tests than Trueman or fellow County man, Statham, both of whom bowled as many balls in total as Anderson but more in County. Their averages are superior in both, by far in County and in all vs Trueman. Stokes is a mid 30s bat and low 30s bowler in Tests, nothing special in either category. He has had a couple of spectacular performances but no more than the genuine greats who were also consistent.
You would of thought England Lost the series with all the chat pros about and the whole baz ball thing is a journalists term nothing to do with the team and coaches other countries fans are so cringe they are so concerned on how England choose to play there cricket it’s getting embarrassing obsessive
I think England need players in the batting order who average 45+ . If hou make 45 in 20 balls that is still 45. And Brook.. lol.. He couldn‘t survive 30 mins of 5th stump bowling... What kind of a Test batsman is he? 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I am very sceptical about Bazzball. Looks like a bad fad. The acid test would have been against the Great West Indian fast bowlers who would have taken Bazzball apart at the seam. All these fads are good till they meet the real enemy. All the 10000+ batters didn't need Bazzball. Joe Root has finally come to his senses and would be best advised to forget this nonsense and play his natural game. He is not a Viv Richards, a Chris Gayle , a Shewag or a Jayasuriya. Those are the guys who had such fantastic hand eye coordination they didn't need any fads but brought fear to the bowlers. Bazzball is just a sheep in Wolf's clothing.
Sri Lanka weren’t that good though. Their best bowlers don’t even play red ball cricket. Well done to those specific players who did well in this game, sure. But England were woeful. It’s becoming a little cult like. The way Lawrence was batting looked to me like someone in a blind panic trying to please the management, whether it works or not. For all the talk of how ‘open’ and so on they are…yeh, as long as you play in this prescribed way that nobody else in the history of the game as ever done. Our one good batsman even, he gets a hundred and immediately has to put the clown suit and the clown wig on and play a reverse scoop. How about some subtlety and nuance. Yes olay aggressively. But also good hard, ruthless cricket. No need for the performative ‘buying in’ to the letter if bazball. Getting runs and taking wickets should be a higher priority that putting on a performance for Stokes and McCullum.
That’s not true they play red ball cricket and Asitha is ranked 7 th in the world. His bowling average is 25 and been year marked as a future prospect since he played under 18. Of course they don’t play much like England based on that theory only India, Australia and England (although they are av average team) play tests
You 3 must be the most miserable sounding trio I have ever encountered. Even my girlfriend, who doesn't watch cricket, asked if someone had died after overhearing this discussion. The guy in the middle is probably the worse. I have been watching him for years and he gets more more depressing each time I listen to him.
As long as Michael Vaughan is within a 5 mile radius of a microphone, these guys aren't the most miserable - they're quite positively cheerful in comparison. That's not going to change your view but it's not like the weather was going to help.

So what a few teams have this by the way.
It was what Sri Lanka deseved...always felt throughout the series they would have one bad day that would ruin their chances. They exploited English weaknesses well and in one case, given the Aussies the ammunition to get Brook out cheaply. I hope they can build on this win

This... Sri Lanka are a really decent test team. They are a top spinner away from being a very good test team.

So much obsession about Ashes and spend years planning for it and only to get thrashed by the Aussies by 5-0 😂😂😂
Harry brook might look back on the amount of runs he left behind in his best phase

If it wasn't for Root, this series would've read very differently at the end. English didnt play particularly well
Bazball 2.0 is just normal test cricket 😂

The human batting is a MAN, George. Therefore he’s a BATSMAN. Not a “Batter”.
