MY favourite thing about edgy comedians is that they go and spend 10 minutes telling the jokes they want to tell and then spend 20 minutes talking about how they're not allowed to tell the jokes they want to tell anymore
"I'm being canceled" screamed the guy with a Netflix special
Really just kinda makes me wish they _actually_ weren't allowed to tell the jokes they want to tell anymore...
@@GrahamChapman A sentiment that the real Graham Chapman would have strongly disagreed with.
@@ultrademigod --said a conceited person who imagined that _they_ were the right person to tell everyone what Graham Chapman's opinions on a subject matter would've been. How very convenient for you that he's dead and cannot refute your claims about him, huh?
Between you and me, I look up to Gray as a comedian and a pioneer within the LGBTQIA+ movement, but that doesn't mean that I regard him as some kind of authority on how to address hate speech masquerading as humour or how to deal with bigots exploiting freedom of speech to undermine democracy and the safety of exposed demographics. Ergo, regardless of what kinda appeal-to-celebrity fallacy you're trying to pull here, I remain by what I said.
Who are super soft, grow up
It's hilarious that people who get butt hurt over making fun of Ricky Gervais, will turn around and tell trans people they're too sensitive and can't take a joke.
But Acaster didn't make fun of Ricky Gervais. It wasn't funny.
Ricky Gervais makes fun of Ricky Gervais. He doesn't need anyone defending him. The best way to attack back at Gervais is with jokes.

"Aw yeah, 'cause you know whose been long overdue a challenge? The Trans Community."
SAY IT LOUDER
I think the most hateful, nasty people in any community is fair game for comedy. The trans people that act like assholes are not so different from straight white males who act like assholes... I have not seen any Ricky Gervais jokes that make fun of all trans people, just like I do not think James Acaster is making fun of all old people in this clip (I see mostly younger people talking about language these days anyways, old people of today loved Eddie Murphy, George Carlin, Chris Rock).
James himself is one of the "edgy" comedians who say "if you don't like it you don't have to watch"...
@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 Almost like the trans community is jaded from straight people always attacking us in a metaphoric and literal sense for centuries. Are we supposed to keep lying down and just letting straights and cis keep being hateful toward us for existing?

he's repeating it because he can't write anything else, he ran out of lines but needed to fill the time, don't give this muppet any credit and certainly don't use the word genius on him
Comedians always repeat their material. That's how they make money. Did you think they go up on stage every day coming up with new jokes? It takes them years to come up with fresh material.
As a trans person, the way this is so wonderful to hear. When someone with no skin in the game still comes out for us. Thank you!
He has skin in the game because he's paid for by a conglomerate of extremists that believe you can think yourself into another body. You can't.

George Carlin: "Are you fuckin' with me?"
I was feeling left out talking about old people and christians, but then he shat on dorks too and I felt included ❤
And that's exactly why his entire rant is so silly to me. People want to be included in comedy, they want to be part of a joke. Why does he mind trans jokes if other groups of people wish to be included? All trans people I know and love like jokes about the topic, do they not matter then? I don't really get James in this one to be honest. He goes up on stage, lectures the audience about what should be allowed and what is off-limits, all to protect a group of people that probably wants the opposite of what he's suggesting. I have lots of experience talking to trans people, it almost feels like James has none. Kinda sad to be honest.

@@valhalla_1129 no one likes to be the butt of a joke, that's why petlovers comment was funny, because it highlights the absurdity of that, and absurdity is a component of humor. Feeling included is very important as you said, it is even more so if you are part of a marginalized group, but the way you are included matters.

I find it really funny how certain comedians will whine about how, "You can't tell a joke nowadays! Everybody is so easily offended now!" and, like, half of their repertoire is just them going, "HEY, LOOK! QUEER PEOPLE! *LAUGH!!!"* I mean, if your comedy is _that_ dependent on making fun of gay and trans people, than either you need freshen up your material or you just aren't that funny.

Half their repertoire consists of their sexual identity. They have nothing else going for them, so they make their sexuality the lynch pin of their entire identity. Quite sad and pathetic really.
@@squamd5777 Out of interest - how many lgbtq people do you actually know? I'm not expecting a truthful answer because...well, how would I know if you're telling the truth? But the point is, I'm just wondering if you have actually had a real world conversation with people from that community/background or you have just formed your opinion based on what is echoed online.
Personally, I know quite a few people and their sexual identity is usally the last thing they want to talk about.
Said by someone who's only seen out of context clips. If you think that's what Ricky's saying, then you're obviously clueless...
1. Never heard Ricky, Jimmy Car, Frankie Boyle or any other 'edgy comedian' do that. 2. At the time of writing I've just gone from a Jonathon Pie video talking about the latest Scottish bill to pass, which literally allows anyone to snitch about anything they find offensive, even when spoken in private, to the police, if it offends them.
Cannot describe how much joy I got watching this set. Watched the whole show and it just had me grinning and laughing. Satisfying and unexpected. He also makes these issues crystal clear in a way that feels like a relief. His demeanour, btw, is just added slapstick on top of what he's talking about. It's added drama for comic effect.
“Can’t go out treating everyone the same before you’ve got equality” is a bangin quote
you literally cannot have equality without treating everyone the same.
@@erichooper2794 yes but treating everyone the same personally is far different from treating them socially. Your personal best friend may be a gay person and you want the very best for them and YOU PERSONALLY treat them the same as everyone but if you live in a country where your best friend cannot legally marry the love of his life then your best friend is not of equal standing as you. Which means that making jokes at his expense, when he is socially below you, is not in good taste because he would not have the same social standing as you to fight back.
The difference between insulting jokes and gallows humor is whether or not you are the one on the gallows. If you're not the one with the rope around your neck then you're just another executioner.
@@erichooper2794 So if you see two people, one of whom is stabbing the other, do you refuse to defend or help the one being stabbed because that would involve treating them unequally? Or do you understand that equality is about the outcome, and if one person needs more help than another, they should get more help?
Treating everyone the same IS equality, numb nuts.

So please enlighten me about thee "special rights" that trans people want. And I don't want bullshit rhetoric you heard on the news I want things you've heard actual trans people say they want. because every single person I've met in the community literally just wants to live their life as a normal person and not live in fear of being hate crimed on the streets or by a potential romantic partner should it come out that they're trans and the person they're with doesn't "agree" with it. "You can't treat everyone the same before you have equality"
I love this statement.
What rights do they not have in western countries?
why? its completely illogical. the only way to possibly get equality is to being applying equality, i.e. treating everyone the same. by giving special privileges and exclusions from jokes, you are not moving toward equality, you are actively moving away from it.
@@jacobmatthews7524Not talking about jokes, that's apparently something you're concerned with. I'm more referring to real life stuff, like jobs and justice system.
For example, even in the most progressive countries we know, a simple anonymous poll showed that over 30% of those in charge of hiring think differently about someone when they're female, or if they have a non-native name, or if they have a different skin-color. All these people have equal rights by law, but obviously there's no true equality.
You can't just flip a switch and say "welp, equality exists now". At that point at best you can hope to create true equality among the next generation that is being born. For the already existing generations, who grew up with the prejudice and bias, you need to nudge it in the right direction. You need to artificially compensate for it. To just pretend that equality exists because some laws got passed, and to pretend those biases suddenly no longer exists, that's disingenuous. You should know better.
That’s something a predator would say

Not only are those sociological surveys so flawed that it boggles my mind that there are people still stupid enough to buy into them, but obviously when people talk about equality they're explicitly referring to the law. The work you have to put in to get to the point that delivering that line is an openly appreciated crescendo is astounding. He sprinkles in just enough moments of relatable insight into his lived experience as a comic - in particular he gets you to “root for the villain” with the Mr. Bean bit and the support hotline material - that you’re so sucked into his point of view that you can’t jump on board fast enough with absolutely hating comedy audiences, and by association and without realising it, yourself. This idea that we need to discriminate against some people because other people aren't "equal" is a juvenile way to look at the world. It is like a kid friendly dumbed down version of Marx, and Marx was already a bad source of information if you care about the truth or effective solutions. I know right?! I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but I was excited too when I noticed it :) We love supportive James!
I noticed that
You could argue that the lighting looks like the bi flag as well
While that's probably a coincidence, it is definitely cool how he color coordinates his comedy specials so every last little thing matches.
I doubt is was intentanol cuz the thing is several hours long and the part when the talks bout trans people is a very small portion of it
Hahahaha brilliant! "What's wrong too challenging for ya?!...." so true. Great to see a comedian actually marching to their own beat, instead of pretending to do the act of previous comedians that have.
"too challenging" is a typical defense of bad comedians.
Virtual signalling is very easy to do
What r u talking about?! He is literally falling straight in line with the rest of Hollywood and whining about everybdy that has the courage to make any jokes about trans ppl.

You know what? Good on you, genuinely. Most people have their viewpoints challenged and they shell up and refuse to listen, myself included. Proud of you for reexamining your personal biases, random person on the internet
'G ervais = a fat ponce' ...
eh "punching down" isnt really a thing. The second you say you cant joke about a group of people they are instantly above everyone else on the social hierarchy. Not to mention that Ricky actually prefaced his jokes with a warning about satire was and how he believed in trans rights only for people to skip it because they wanted to be angry at what he said next.
This never gets old. Such a brilliant take!

I think its good if comedians realize its infinitely funnier to make fun of people with actual power and influence rather than marginalized groups they think are threatening because they never heard of survivorship bias.
I mean, i think comedy is no longer comedy when you just turn it into political fodder like that, but you do you :/
It reminds me of the Terry Pratchett quote 'Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it's not satire, it's bullying.'
The main trans part in Gervais' show was him mocking Caitlyn Jenner who absolutely deserves to be mocked. Caitlyn Jenner is someone with power and privilege.
@@monkey39128 I don’t like Caitlyn Jenner especially as a person but I feel like there’s better ways to mock people like that than just making fun of their identity. There’s sincerely plenty to make fun of Caitlyn Jenner for just being scummy.

The funniest part of this routine is watching transphobes in the comments section have very strong opinions about how unfunny it is to make fun of transphobes.
Most people arent "transhobic", they just would appreciate it if you would go back to your traditional role as a crossdresser. Its a fetish/lifestyle. It is not a biological reality.
