I'm more annoyed with US Dollar bill having the same size... I used to live there. The 1st time I wanted to use the bill, it got me really confused. $20 $50 $1 all look the same and same size. Coming from Malaysia where I'm used to different color notes and sizes, USD is a nuisance to me, no offense. Even the coins have the same size!! At least Malaysian coin size depends on the value. on size of the bill, yes it's important that it's different in size
before the polimer version when all of the bill are made of paper the RM1 bill is significantly smaller and easy to differentiate by just a glance, but when they update the bills about 20+ years ago when they size up the bills to the size it is now but was still in paper quite a lot of people need to adjust to the change. because of the size people mistook the RM1 and RM50 if the bill was just judge by a glance due to the colouring looks nearly the same under dim lighting eg: in your wallet
in short if you're in a rush you might mistakenly pay RM50+ on a RM1+ item, which happens to me once and quite a number of my relative back then which leads us to separate the 50 from other notes in our wallet for some time before they change to the polymer

We use to have 500 and 1000 bills but was discontinued somewhere in the 90’s, to make it hard for people to smuggle out the ringgit, coz if not mistaken we have to declare if we have cash more than 10k going out of the country, they changed the RM1 from paper to coins and later after that the coins was discontinued then to polymer, and i still remember when i was a kid people use to translate the word “Ringgit” to dollar when they speak in English and we even use the $ sign and somewhere in the late 80’s they changed it to RM to have our own identity.. i always wonder why dollar and not pounds £ since we were from the British colony…

me: uh the green one would be nice
    mom: *pulled out RM5*

It is true that once the Money Printing Company of the Republic of Indonesia (Perum Peruri) once collaborated with Malaysia to print Ringgit Money (RM). However there is no clear information on the amount of ringgit printed or which dominance was served. Both parties kept it confidential. Apart from that, Perum Peruri has also printed money for Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Ghana, Somalia, Argentina and The Philippines passports. In December 2019, Perum Peruri won a contract to print Peruvian national money.
Ringgit Malaysia banknotes have been issued by Bank Negara Malaysia, BNM (the Central Bank of Malaysia) in 4 series so far. The First Series started in 1967. The Second Series started in 1982. The Third Series started in 1996. The Fourth Series started in 2008 (only for RM50 banknote) and in 2012 for the other banknotes.
BNM Fourth Series banknotes (starting 2012) are supplied by not one but four countries namely Crane AB from Sweden, Giesecke & Devrient GmbH from Germany, Oberthur Technologies from France and Orell Fussli from Switzerland.

In the past, we also has 500 and 1000 note.

The lower denominations RM1 and RM5 being plastic has probably saved the national bank a lot of money and resources on damaged notes.
In Malaysia, we have markets (aka pasar) and it's very common that money gets passed around a lot. You can imagine how much wear and tear the notes will go through daily, and that's not even including wet markets or for when it rains.
So I think it was a very smart move to have them being polymer, being both waterproof and tear proof.
