  • Racing driver Vicki Butler-Henderson, Millennial Rachael Hogg, and mum Erin Baker (REV!) are testing three of the UK's most popular electric cars, based on how people search for them at Auto Trader.
    They're looking at how easily they can fit into your lifestyle, covering practicality, connectivity, and ride and handling. And because they’re EVs, charging time, range, and the perils of range anxiety.
    The three cars this week are the sporty and fun to drive BMW i3S, good all-rounder Renault Zoe, and quirky Kia Soul EV.
    Which will come out on top?

    How much of my life am I going to spend charging? 99% of the time you will charge at home. It takes less than 5 minutes to open the nose take cable from boot and connect both ends. You then go into the house and do what you normally do. Next morning you reverse the process in about 5 minutes. In a normal week I spend about 10 minutes charging my car. The actual charge goes in whilst I'm doing the same things as most ICE drivers do. What's the fuss about.

      99.9 percent of the time is a slow trickle charge overnight at home for me. And for my lifestyle it works just fine.

      This is the ideal setup, the problem I have is that we have no proper charging stations, so long distance driving (which is what I do a lot at work) isn't a good idea, until we do get proper charging stations, an electric car isn't a viable option yet.

    Mini Cooper=YES, Kia Soul=YES , BMW I3=YES, VW ID3=YES , Zoe=NO!! ==> 0 point in CRASH-TEST Euro NCAP!! And boring design!

    i mean 0-80% charge time should include what range you get at 80% as well.

      A 22 kWh Zoe will take half the time to charge as the 40kwh Zoe but the 40kwh goes twice as far. Kind of a pointless test. It would be much more useful to state the output of the on-board charger is.

    • @_TrueDesire_
      @_TrueDesire_ 6 років тому +3

      Conor Nugent usually 6-7kw from what i've seen. takes forever 😅
      i would like to se car makers to list charge time for 100km range, thats sufficient to reach most places.
      i saw some comments on the new Kona EV, people whined about the long 0-80% time yet they forget that's a 64kwh battery pack...
      in short i want:
      • time on the charge to reach (REAL range) 100km, ioniq for example has better charger than leaf
      • range on 80% battery (since they tout 0-80%)

    • @mOczakowski
      @mOczakowski 6 років тому +1

      Yeah this review is a bit incomplete. First like u said, what is range at 80% (and the cost), second is peoples test in back, which should have been easy w three girls in the review, third; cargo test of course, and running costs of course.

      miles added per hour of charge would be a informative measure.

    Years late to this review - and I have owned one of those Souls for nearly 2 years.
    No mention of how spacious and how much headroom there is in the back of the Soul, the Zoe's interior looks like a Kangaroo's pouch in comparison; and the BMW rear is also less spacious.
    As someone with major back issues, the Soul is also the nicest to get in and out of, of the various EVs in my (s/h) price range; with a reasonably high seating position for the driver; even with the seat in it's lowest position. (I am 6ft 6").
    Finally, no mention of the hideous cost of replacement, skinny tyres for that i3; the Soul and Zoe are quite happy on standard tyres.
    Kia did have to limit how much current a home charger could give out to the Soul though, the onboard charger (OBC) circuits were getting cooked and failing; so it was lowered to 6.4KW from 7KW via a software patch.
    Despite the claimed lower resale value, it held on better and for longer than the other two; only really dropping below £10k in the last 12 months.
    At 7.5 years old, my 2016 car's interior and exterior still look great; and the battery has only lost a tiny amount of capacity, 26.1KWh of the original 27KWh (30KWh was the later revision for 2017/18).

    I have the old Zoe and even with the lower range, I wouldn’t call it a city car. It really works everywhere, but especially in the suburbs. With the 180-200 mile range I think it’s capable of almost anything you could ask of it.

    Honestly you guys this is 2018 the Zoe now has at least 120 miles range at motorways speeds and around 190 miles at normal everyday driving. Stop going on about range anxiety. Do agree with the comment about the infrastructure, it really needs to be PAYG.

  • @michaelmeece

    Please, when showing charge times, just tell us miles per hour. Time to 80% doesn’t reveal much. 80% of an i3 is not the same as 80% of a Tesla. The battery size is extremely different.

    You should have tested a LEAF as it's the best selling EV. Also most people change at home so every day leave with 100%, & as the average commute is about 30 there is no range anixity

      Blake Swan Zoe use A/C during quick charging session to prevent unusual battery degradation. It is not as great as liquid cooling but still does the job in most cases. I think the other two have liquid cooling.

    Only recently looking at EV's here in the States, I was looking at the Kia Soul and didn't know they even had an EV. Learning what I have here I see more research is needed. Going to be living in LA and parking spaces aren't usually large. So, trying to get the best of both worlds.

    How much is the bmw when compared to the Zoė and soul? Surely that should be mentioned in this review and boot space is very important to most families. You looked at each isofix in the back so you were intending for families.

    Ok ladies, let’s have some transparency here. Your lady Erin known as Mother on this video is otherwise known as Erin Baker, Editorial Director of Autotrader and I have just watched another video where she is putting people off buying an EV at this time. (Based on the lack of infrastructure - hmmm) See video Electric Cars- time to buy one. Published 30 Aug 18 see time 5.37 on the video. Yes Erin maybe a mother BUT she has a vested interest in the motor Industry and this should have been made clear! In addition Rachel Hogg also works for autotrader and again it was not mentioned that this ‘Millennial’ has a vested interest in the motor industry. The perception I took from this video is that both ladies are normal run of the mill women giving a lay person opinion. Tut tut - The REV test

      Clem Craven umm, these 3 are car reviewers - their little by-lines are I guess a way of telling us what viewpoint they’re coming from. They were also clearly critical in this video of lack of infrastructure being a hindrance to EVs. What are their ‘vested interests’? Are they shareholders in Renault?!
