Changing the character's name to "Carmichael" didn't work--BUT--since Lucille Ball had just divorced Desi Arnaz, Lucy Carmichael was rewritten to become a widow...thus making Vivian Vance (as Vivian Bagley) the first divorced woman on a TV show.
