Suzuki Truck V6: Replace timing tensioner -Part 4 of 5

- In this 5-Part video series I replace the rattling #1 TIMING CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER on my 2002 Suzuki XL-7 V6.
Part 4 covers:
-Prepare timing cover for installation:
*Properly clean mating surfaces
*Install new water pump o-ring
*Install new crankshaft seal
*Apply RTV to engine block and timing cover
-Install timing cover
-Install and properly torque crankshaft pulley to 110ft-lbs.
This procedure applies to these Suzuki trucks with V6 engines:
'01-'06 Suzuki XL-7 H27 2.7L V6
'99-'06 Suzuki Grand Vitara H25 2.5L V6
Symptoms are a rattling from the front of the engine, especially on initial cold start and at hot idle.

NOTE:
The quoted labor time for this job is 14.5 HOURS, longer than replacing both head gaskets on a Subaru! Here I take some common-sense shortcuts to cut the labor time down to 6 hours or so.
There is nothing too complicated about the procedure...just nuts and bolts. However, attention to detail is critical. These are INTERFERENCE engines. If the timing chain jumps during tensioner replacement, resetting the timing is NOT a straight-forward procedure!
Also all the metal covers are sealed by RTV so proper application is crucial for avoiding oil leaks in the future.
Enjoy! - Авто та транспорт
I'do a new pump and as for the crank/pulley seal ,I'd leave it if it's still soft 'cos a non leaking factory seal is always better than an aftermarket one..Ultragrey is my choice of RTV...Just a thin bead so the sealant can just be seen...You're doing a good job mate.
I used the belt between the crankshaft pulley and the AC pulley. Tucked the belt down under the crankshaft pulley and used it to tighten itself as I torqued it down.
I have been in suspense since part 3. I saw the MPV in the 4 runner video and thought....poor Ivan, something went wrong with the XL7. Glad work is progressing.
+Randy Gudeahn (ProTech) Hey Randy! That was actually my parents' '98 MPV All-Sport lol...did you notice who was hauling the mountain bikes? Take a closer look :)
+motoYam82 Awesomeness for sure and for certain!
Some supplier had a gasket listing for the front cover on these, Fel Pro? A friend had one and got annoyed with the oil leaks. Gasket and no more problems. He sold it at 350,000 miles. Great engine.
Good info! Permatex Ultra Gray seemed to have helped a lot. But 350k miles WOW that is promising! Was that on all original parts? Was it ever opened up? My new tensioner is starting to rattle again, only 30k miles since the replacement :(
He maintained his stuff very well all the time, but, no the engine was never opened up. Just regular maintenance. Frequent fluid and filter changes. He says that Suzuki was the best car he ever owned. Never left him anywhere. Used less than a half a quart of oil between changes @ 300 plus K miles. He changed at 5K with full synthetic. Usually Mobil 1, but he went over to Rotella T after 250K. Nothing ever failed. He did live in an area that wasn't bathed in salt brine 8 months of the year. The thing was really amazing. It looked new at 300K.
Oh, the front cover job was just to stop the oil leaks. Tensioner was fine.
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics wow that sucks, i have a 2006 GV with the same engine with only 15k miles (24k km), could you do a follow up video? really enjoyed the series, wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas.
Eric O. would have used some break clean for that cover!
I would have replaced the water pump while everything was apart, seems like it would be worth it. Way too much stuff to remove not to do it. All this work makes working on a chevy V8 look easy and a better option as a vehicle.
Currently having starter issues, avoid the starter if at all possible, these engines have nearly inaccessible starters. The bolts come through the bell-housing into the starter and the top bolt you can get to if you take the heater hoses out, the bottom bolt has to be reached from underneath the car.
My $800 beast had the pulley (harmonic balancer) crack right at the keyway, that tore up the crankshaft seal causing it to lose oil, and making a huge mess all over the front of the engine and underneath the vehicle. The tensioner at the driver's-side cams is the one I know went out, but I wonder if I should replace all three?
Could'nt agree more on the different mating surfaces. Can be tricky and more is the answer rather than less.
GOOD info and job well done MR, IVAN CHEEERS
Look good so far, did you put a new pump on or just a new o- ring ?
Just a new o-ring...I'm a cheap Russian haha
Cant believe you didn't replace the water pump !!!!
Still going strong 4 years and 40k miles later :)
Snoozing, Wake me up for the autopsy ! LOL! Quick, down and dirty, cheep fix ! Nice ! Keep the vids coming Ivan !
Ivan you missed the perfect opportunity to use brake clean on the timing cover. Looking good.
+Eric Corse Believe it or not I actually tried it off camera, but it would have taken about 10 full cans to get that layer of mud and oil off hahaha That stuff dries so fast, but sure smells nice!!
LOL I wondered if it would end up contaminate the gasket surface.
How you liking that impacting ratchet you bought from me? If you're going to mess with RTV you really need a Valco Cincinatti Tube Grip. I gave one of these to Eric. They are the complete nuts.
+SATAMAN Schmidt Hi Denis, I'm in love with that impacting ratchet! Hopefully it will last much longer than Eric's since my air pressure is only 110psi haha Also he did show me that tube grip thing...gotta say that's pretty slick. That UltraGrey was pretty hardened up in the tube for some reason lol
Eric's the only one that's managed to kill one. Astro Pneumatic has sold hundreds of these under their brand (their tools are black and not orange like the AirPro, but, they are exactly the same tool) and only Eric has managed to kill one. Eric seems capable of killing any tool.
looking good ivan
Teşekkürler
Intresting intake design, sure looks designed for upper rpm use. Since this is a Suzuki is the engine rock'n Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers? lol Good job Ivan.
+EZRider1979 Hopefully I'll never have to pull the heads and find out what kind of Swirl is going on in there...not on this engine. No way.
As you know I prefer the Yamaha Induction Control System (YICS) myself haha
Great video set!
Very useful, thank you!
U know Eric O would have just opened up 1 of his cases of Brake Cleaner and had that cover cleaned in 3 minutes.
Will this video series apply to a 2008 Suzuki grand vitara V6?? I'm having this same exact sound coming from timing cover.
No, different engine.
So sad you didn't learn from Eric O. BRAKE CLEANER!!! Were you asleep during that lesson? Great video just like rassing you. By the way WATER PUMP!!!!!
I wonder if Eric O would have sprayed the piss out of timing assembly with break clean? lol, great work. I'm joking yet find myself wondering....
bad idea
