Macro Flash at Home: An Easy Idea for Creative Shots!
Вставка

- In this week's easy macro photography tutorial, I show how to use flash lighting to transform your images from the comfort of your own home. I explain the camera settings and flash settings I use and how I use my flash off camera to backlight my subject for powerful results.
I also explain how I balance the ambient light, using the best aperture and shutter speed to get rid of the continuous light in the room and allow my Godox AD100 Pro flash to really shine.

We LOVE macro. Great lighting tips 👍👍👍
And we love you!
I need a T-Shirt with. I ironed the leaf. On it 🤣. Great video
I'll add that to the list of ideas for my merch store!!
Helpful and clear tutorial. A few drops of glycerine rubbed into leaf, pre-book press, should keep it from curling. Cheers!
I have been photographing stand out leaves on the deciduous leafy ground with flash and bounce cards. Taking focus stacks to capture incredible detail with the OM-1 and almost macro capable 12-40mm f2.8. What a capable and enjoyable combination to shoot with.
Leaves really do provide endless inspiration don't they
Will definitely try this. Something we can all do. Best tip for me was using the iron to flatten the leaf. 👍 Thanks Andrew. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Chris! I was very pleased to finally find a use for my iron. It's just been taking up cupboard space until now!
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love watching your videos. You make everything easy to understand and replicate. Long time viewer and great pics.
Thanks so much! Do you think this is one you'd like to try?
Andrew, thanks to your videos, I understand the principles flash photography. My flash photography immensely improved, the results impressing friends who don't understand how to create a black background without a studio setup.
Thank you, I'm so glad you've found it helpful!
Great enthusiasm from a pro.
I have been finding many mini scenes on the deciduous leafy floor in the woods.
The Z8 is left at home and I shoot crisp detailed stacks with my OM-1 hand held and 12-40mm f2.8 (it is almost a maco lens and very versatile). I use onboard and off board flash with a bounce card.
I have a fast picking method for my stacks which I export and batch process in Helicon for fast results. Then cull the individual focus bracket photos.
I am lucky to be retired, strong fit and healthy and love all aspects of photography and genres.
I always look forward to your content.
That's an impressive dual camera setup you have there! I love exploring woodland floors, I think there's always something to photograph there!
Love your tutorials. Beautiful images. Cheers.
Thank you for this demo Andrew, I’m really looking forward to trying this out, have just bought a macro lens in the sales ❤
Excellent! I hope you can put the new lens to good use!
I love this! It's a technique we can try at home. Thanks, Andrew.
Absolutely you can, it's super easy and honestly it's so much for to play around with! Do you think you'll give it a go? Please share the results if you do!
@AndrewLanxonPhotography I do, and I will. I have to go rescue some leaves. Lol
Now why didn’t I think of that? Great simple setup and approach. Love it. I have a collection of leaves and some bird feathers that I think are just waiting for this. You also mentioned fabrics and I think some of my wife’s quilting scraps could also produce nice results. Got to go now. My basement “studio” is calling.
Love all of this. I didn't think of feathers but you're right, they'd look great like this! Let me know how you get on!
Stunning macro
Thanks so much. I'll be giving this a go with cold weather coming on. Whenever I do a panorama or other sequence of shots, instead of using my hand as the starting and ending points I prefer to make another folder in camera for each set. This is a handy feature selectable from the menu on Canon cameras. Not sure about other brands.
Simple but incredibly effective idea! My underused lighting gear needs to be dusted off and try this out!
Thank you! I definitely recommend giving it a go!
I've done a few of these macro leaf veins images this autumn but I used a light box and placed a sheet of glass on top to flatten the leaf I got some great pictures.
Did this method give you a white background?
@@AndrewLanxonPhotographyyea but I cropped. , as I didn't want the background
Yea
great tutorial video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the setup and outcome. I have been looking for a flash. I did use your links for the 100 and trigger. Thank you for having these in the more info section. Now I will just have to figure out how to use.
I'm glad you found it useful! I hope you get some great shots with your flash!
I do love a bit of leafage photography - usually a collage type shot outdoors but this has certainly inspired me to get more creative. now, to go and dust down the Godox...
Yes! Go fire that flash! I believe in you!
This makes want to try this before all the leaves are done here. I forgot about using the book method to flatten leaves but have used an iron. LOL. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This was good to watch and fun to try. I also overlapped some leaves and got some interesting effects - almost like the “bat signal”. Would like to send you the results if I could figure out how to do that.
Glad you found it useful! You can tag me on Instagram if you like - @Batteryhq
Great shot lovely pics.
Thanks Gary!
Thank you. Some years ago, I did manage to capture a shot of backlighting some green leaves with the sun. But what made it special was two long body (abdomen) insects copulating. They were backlit too as they were both on the other side of the leaf, so they were shadow.
Nice! Was that a total fluke that they happened to be there when you took the shot? Because I've definitely done that before and counted myself very lucky!
@ I saw the back;it leaves i and started to look for the best scenario when I spotted the insects. I moved a little to best the light and the increased silhouette of the two. It was like looking them through a green sheer curtain.
Great Vid - Thanks andrew
Thanks Robin!
Thanks for sharing. Just acquired an AD100pro. Going to try it out on my RB67, 503cx and WISTA 4x5
Nice! I hope you get good shots!
Love the simplicity of this, giving stunning results.May I ask as did not catch. Do you manually focus or not?
This video came out just in time for my photo club's backlit challenge 😅
It's like the club gave me a heads up ;)
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography I was also really lucky there were some leaves still out on the ground after they came and cleaned most of them up this week.
Subscribed….this is the stuff I love to do but unfortunately I don’t use my camera enough, sometimes 4 - 6 months after I’ve last used it & I ALWAYS forget what to do. I’m really doing to try to keep on top of this.
Get yourself a second flash trigger my friend. The trigger that you’re holding in your hand will be used to adjust your flash and the one that you leave on the camera will fire it. It’s so much faster and much more convenient than trying to adjust the one on the camera.
I recently got a second but didn't bother using it. I also have a wired trigger that, if I'd considered it for even a moment, could have used here. I tend not to think about it when I'm working with flash in studio as it generally doesn't matter if I touch the camera and it's no great hassle to adjust settings on the trigger.
I've got to try this. I still have the dried leaves from the last time you suggested a photo-at-home leaf session.
Oh you definitely should if you've already got the materials lying around!
Hello Andrew,
Thank you for the presentation and showing your workflow.
I also take photos with off-camera flash and also turn day into night.
I would be interested to know what aperture setting and exposure time you use on the camera?
Is this a macro lens?
I would like to try it out with the leaf in the forest.
Great work!
Thank you for your feedback.
Best regards, Albert
Prachtig ! Dank u
I know you didn't invent this approach but I often say out loud "I'm going to do an Andrew Lanxon macro photo with flash". It's not yours but this style is attributed to your videos that I can never not call it that
Love it! I'd happily call it my thing, though I think there'd be many people before me utterly furious at me for it! Still, I appreciate you think it's part of my style.
trademarked lol 😅
I love the 3-legged thing! I just got the Albert 2.0 (which is heavy/bomb-proof/reliable). What tripod do you use on treks like the quarry?
They're great! On the quarry video I used a Gitzo Legende, which tends to be my go-to for any outdoor stuff.
Great video Andrew! can I do this with a flashlight.
Good question! It probably could, but you'd need to work in a dark room in order to create the black background so it would be trickier than working with flash. My advice: give it a go and let me know how you get on!
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography Thank you, I will try this.
Very helpful and informative video; thanks so much! Curious about the difference between using the AD100 versus off camera flash? Is it just stronger light?
Thanks Nina! I'm not sure what you mean here as the Ad100 is an off camera flash?
@ just comparing to a Godox v850, etc
Oh I see, you mean the Ad100 in comparison to an on camera flash? In which case, there's not a ton of difference. I think the power of light is similar. Even if it's a flashgun designed to be used on camera like the V850, you can still use those flashes off camera either by using a compatible wireless trigger or using an off camera flash cord. As long as you're able to get the flash off camera to move it around your subject like I showed then you'll be able to get similar results with most flashes.
@ thank you for the kindness of your patience and reply.
You're welcome, I hope you find it useful in getting your shots!
I like the rimlight effect, but unfortuinately one shot can only highlight so much of the leaf's edge. Perhaps combining multiple shots, with the flash say above, below and on both sides, would be worth a try. (Or use multiple flashes).
So a pro paints his/her studio walls the same neutral grey as an exposure card??
instead of ironing it... would it work if you squish it between two bits of glass?
To flatten it before photographing, sure, but you couldn't shoot the flash into the glass without getting a lot of reflections.
Now add smoke...
