A couple of years ago, I went to this "progressive metal fest" festival in Brussels. Primarily because I wanted to see Dream Theater. There were like 5 bands or something. I came in a little late and Unexpect was playing. I only catched the last song. Never heared of them before that. That one song is the only thing I remember from that festival.
I bet their practice sessions were always either confusing as hell, or super entertaining. There is something about the spastic, unpredictable nature about this kind of music that I find really enjoyable. You can tell they are all enjoying themselves, which is fun to watch.
There's no argument, it's all opinion. In my opinion this is one of the best bands ever. The fact that they can so seamlessly transition from one eccentric section to the next is unbelievable and the music itself is unbelievable in my opinion. But hey, I guess its not music for everyone.
This band is amazing, and totally brings it to the live stage. If you are a fan of things Progressive and Extreme Metal please support their efforts. They deserve it. I've been a fan for about five years now and have never been disappointed.
hey i saw them in progressiv nation in sweden, i bought meet and greet and saw Dream Theater etc etc, but i saw unexpects singer (the woman) shes kinda cute, i waved at her and she smiled and waved back :P
Anyone who says that there is too much going on or that it doesn't make sense must not have the mental capacity to appreciate this brilliant band. If you actually give it a chance and listen to the album from start to finish a couple times, it makes perfect sense.
Not to downplay how hard it would be to play each of the parts individually, But I think the most amazing thing these guys have accomplished is remembering the changes and where they go for all their songs. That's seriously... so much changing. @_@
Actually, this is a 9-string bass :) I read it on their website. I saw them in live yesterday in Sherbrooke... they're fuckin' incredible, you must see em live haha
The first time I heard them was actually live, and I was stunned. The music was so... unexpected, and something I've never heard before. And I liked it. :)
@aligatorsandwitch72 is an avant-garde extreme metal band which is using elements from black metal, death metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, melodic heavy metal, classical music, dark cabaret, opera, medieval music, jazz, funk, electro, ambient, noise, gypsy music, and circus music.
Pretty crazy, but i find it really interesting how this band is so creepy and happy at the same time. They are awesome players and their songs are much more complex than they sound. Also, HOLY SHIT playing a song with so many BPM changes and still flawless sync playing! Awesome.
I saw a really short live clip of this band and sadly there was no mention of their name. After googling "metal band violin female vocals 9 string bass" it was right there :D Thanks for posting this video too.
Yay! finally I find a metal band which expands well beyond the standard set up of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals where each member is relevant and integral to the songs (*glaring at certain masked band*)
as i said in the other reply. I think its a warr guitar, wich is basically a guitar and bass put together, both tapping and regular picking is used on a warr
@CyanideSovereign That's right, I'm a fan of Devin Townsend. He tweeted about UneXpecT, so I've been checking out their music... what a fantastic band!
crazy music for crazy people. the crazy ones defines this world.we open for them with my band called brief respite in laval. it was great, great show and great people.
3 words for this band: PURE FUCKING MADNESS! An amazing display of musical talent... proudly Metal music! :) Does anybody where they're from? I mean what country :)
I remember the time I was at there show this bands Weird but I like it very Unique individual I heard them on the underground radio before I went to there show" I gotta say I love Mix Genre's I really enjoy something I don't understand that's why I'm trying to understand"
@KingCrimson776 it is challenging music, i have to admit each time i listen a new song, i tell myself «uh, i understand nothing». You have to surpass your initial impression of chaos, it is possible to learn their tracks, and understand their crazy and complex... masterpieces! i saw them live in 4 different venues, each time they played their setllist to near perfection, and the sound quality can sometimes hide it, still, each of these guys is a virtuose.
Avant - Garde metal is not for everyone. I will understand if you don't love -or even hate- it. But if you're one of the lucky ones with me -who can understand and love this miracle- then enjoy :)
Not only their music is chaotic, they even LOOK chaotic on stage. The only other band I know that plays music as chaotic as this is an australian extreme death metal band called Portal, but it's something WAY different from this (they also look weird and creepy on stage, search for the song "Glumurphonel" here on youtube, available in highest definition 1080).
LMAO at some of the comments. I haven't heard them live yet, but started listening to them back in 09. Really crazy band. Makes my ears tingle each time I play them on my iPod. LOL Whenever someone challenges me as to how hardcore they are with their metal I play this song and they are like "WTF was all that?" And I say "Exactly! Now stfu."
I saw them yesterday night in Québec city. I knew it was going to be good judging by the videos. In fact, i can't even tell how good it actually was... If they come in a galaxy near you, do yourself a big favor and do what must be done: go, go, go.... You will be in for an unexpected experience. An incredible performance and, surprisingly, much easier to listen than you would think once you catch and surf the electromagnetic tsunami... ;-)
I'm sure that you know everything about modern or contemporary composition and melody, and for sure you are a great composer who studied harmony in conservatorio for years and now is here to compare this band with such masters as Stravinskij, Sciarrino, Béla Bartók, Luigi IX, Malipiero or Schönberg, and for sure you studied all the history of music from Greeks to nowaday.
@Wide000 I was at the same show... From what we've heard from the new songs, i'm pretty sure that they're gonna be a *little* bit more linear than the previous album's...
@KingCrimson776 I have to agree you're not 'getting it'. Having spent some time in musical academia, I have to say this kind of stuff doesn't even remotely strike me as weird, pretentious, or musically non-functioning. It actually sounds relatively normal and commercial to me at this point! The structure and thematic material are actually not crazy or chaotic. It's more clever planning and composition that gives you that effect, which is another testament to it being well-written.
@RadalfHyperborean I went to the show of the release of the SleepLessEmpire album and i found the sound better than the CD, and it was so tight, yes live they to as good... if not even better in my ears.
You know what's one of my favorite things about this band? They can actually pull of their unique, crazy sound live.
A couple of years ago, I went to this "progressive metal fest" festival in Brussels. Primarily because I wanted to see Dream Theater.

That one song is the only thing I remember from that festival.
That's awesome.
11 years later, even after they disbanded, here i am hearing dis masterpiece not everyone could understand ✌️
I bet their practice sessions were always either confusing as hell, or super entertaining. There is something about the spastic, unpredictable nature about this kind of music that I find really enjoyable. You can tell they are all enjoying themselves, which is fun to watch.
You just dont know what to... EXPECT every song
There's no argument, it's all opinion. In my opinion this is one of the best bands ever. The fact that they can so seamlessly transition from one eccentric section to the next is unbelievable and the music itself is unbelievable in my opinion. But hey, I guess its not music for everyone.
Part of the things that make me proud to be a french Canadian! Epicness!
The other one should be Kataklysm dude ;-)
Ils étaient bon en TABARNAK!!!!
La liste pourrait être longue des grouoes québécois qui me rendent fier
This band is one of the best live acts I've seen. Pretty damn cool people too.
i'd kill to see them again
I watch this like 600 times a day, it's a daily ritual, this is the greatest thing on UA-cam. Leilindel is so amazing to watch
Man I miss this era of music here, we still had Quo Vadis, good Cryptopsy and Unexpect!
How the hell do they write this!!!! Unbelievable!! I love it! It's like being at a metal circus!!
For such a complex beat they keep it together fantastically ^-^
This band is amazing, and totally brings it to the live stage. If you are a fan of things Progressive and Extreme Metal please support their efforts. They deserve it. I've been a fan for about five years now and have never been disappointed.
I SO thank the person who linked me to this! Pretty epic and extreme!
I saw this band supporting Dream Theater/Opeth in Manchester and was blown away tbh.
+andy owen

I'm so happy I got to see them as many times as I did. It's such beautiful chaos
hey i saw them in progressiv nation in sweden, i bought meet and greet and saw Dream Theater etc etc, but i saw unexpects singer (the woman) shes kinda cute, i waved at her and she smiled and waved back :P
Probably one of the best videos I’ve ever seen…definitely saving this
crazy music for crazy people. the crazy ones defines this world.

"What genre is your band"
Unexpect: "Yes"
Actually, this is a 9-string bass :) I read it on their website.
I saw them in live yesterday in Sherbrooke... they're fuckin' incredible, you must see em live haha
so unbelievably skilled, refreshing and inspiring, i only found this band last night and im hooked.
She is quite hot aswell!
I was thinking the same thing. She is fascinating & probably an intense lay. She might be nuts though(artsy broads usually are).
The first time I heard them was actually live, and I was stunned. The music was so... unexpected, and something I've never heard before. And I liked it. :)
they are spectacular live.
guys please comeback!
awesome underrated prog band, one of my favs
The pianist doesn't get enough credit. He's amazing.
@aligatorsandwitch72 is an avant-garde extreme metal band which is using elements from black metal, death metal, thrash metal, progressive metal, melodic heavy metal, classical music, dark cabaret, opera, medieval music, jazz, funk, electro, ambient, noise, gypsy music, and circus music.
It's not weird. It's Unecpect. Soo good
wow.. there are so many people packed onto that little stage... these guys are awsome!!
Pretty crazy, but i find it really interesting how this band is so creepy and happy at the same time.
They are awesome players and their songs are much more complex than they sound.
Also, HOLY SHIT playing a song with so many BPM changes and still flawless sync playing! Awesome.
So proffessional, very extreme, nearly to insane, LOVE IT! :D
I love this group!!!
Playing this live, perfectly, that's what freaks me out.
I saw a really short live clip of this band and sadly there was no mention of their name. After googling "metal band violin female vocals 9 string bass" it was right there :D
Thanks for posting this video too.
That this band had disbanded,I will never get to see them live. Which is a pity shame
they are maniacs!!!

I fucking love this! It's pure, brilliant insanity.
Yay! finally I find a metal band which expands well beyond the standard set up of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals where each member is relevant and integral to the songs (*glaring at certain masked band*)
A super obscure Russian band 30 years ago ;) ua-cam.com/video/Tf6ygRj2N_o/v-deo.html
Where has this band been all my life? This was beyond fucking epic.
it's a clusterfuck of awesome. I love it.
It was :) I was at the progressive nation tour :) Man, that guitar roared...
Same, their music is strange, but their live shows are immense D:
I'd go see em again, definetly
DAMN! ANOTHER KIND OF MUSIC!!!
as i said in the other reply. I think its a warr guitar, wich is basically a guitar and bass put together, both tapping and regular picking is used on a warr
God I wish I could see them live
@veliusmemnoch true, once you listen to it enough...it all makes sense, it really is brilliant.
@Vossajex This music goes through the metal, this music is a fusion of various genres!
@CyanideSovereign That's right, I'm a fan of Devin Townsend. He tweeted about UneXpecT, so I've been checking out their music... what a fantastic band!
Simply divine, wish they'd come to the states
crazy music for crazy people. the crazy ones defines this world.we open for them with my band called brief respite in laval. it was great, great show and great people.

Especially the solos!
J' aime votre musique Gothique nostalgique et perspective
Avant - Garde metal is not for everyone. I will understand if you don't love -or even hate- it. But if you're one of the lucky ones with me -who can understand and love this miracle- then enjoy :)

The verse at 1:38 makes me think of "This is Halloween" from Nightmare before Christmas.
its very fun to play on the piano
@Wide000 I was at the same show... From what we've heard from the new songs, i'm pretty sure that they're gonna be a *little* bit more linear than the previous album's...
What genre do you listen to?

That is quite possibly the coolest bass ever.
