Get some 220-400 grit wet dry silicone carbide sand paper and adhere it to some plate glass work your blade in a circular motion do the same to both sides of the plates you want sharpened. works great
Very cool way to do this "automatically". I just use a good flat water stone of the proper grit and sharpen both the blade and plate flat against it. I get rid of the burr using a soft buff and finish by washing it and then running some stiff dough (just flour and water) through it to pick up any loose filings or grit I might have missed. It works quite well.
About a week ago I sharpened a neglected meat grinder with sandpaper supported by a glass sheet. Worked well. But can see where these stones could be faster.
Same here. The grinder doesn't spin that fast, so a minute or two on flat stones should be about the same. Plus no risk of getting stone grit and steel shavings inside my grinder...

I didnt know the blade and grinding plates could be sharpened. I will be ordering these from Rytek- the Sausage Maker Buffalo Ny. Great place to do buisness with, I have been a customer of them for 20 years. Thank you for the great video.
Great video - thanks. Very informative - Great detail - I liked the cardboard tip - will probably use metal sandpaper as Amazon reviews state the whetstone does not fit a Kitchenaid grinder.
Can I just use the sheet of sandpaper with some water on my countertop to sharpen both the knife and the plate to razor-sharp and perfectly flat every time at no money spent? Asking for a friend.
I do have a question for you. I do have this set for my big grinder like you got like you show on this video. I also have a number 10 hand crank grinder that I mount on my countertop. Now that blade hole in the middle is 7/16 of an inch, how can I make that work?
I find that taking a medium Sharpie pen and drawing lines a cross the plate will show you if it is warped or concave. Concave problems are likely fixable, run your sanding method until all Sharpie marks are gone, then do your fine grind. My factory plates, as I found out much later than I would like to admit, came and it was concave. I thought I was sharpening it but still got fat smear in the center.😠🤬🤬🤬! Then I heard about the Sharpie method. What a difference! I use a glass lapping plate, 220 & 400 grit wet/dry sanding paper. I was unaware of these stones.
I have a grinder that I bought for $130. I only used it a few time but the meat keep getting stuck on the plate. It's not being push forward. I was about to sell it on Facebook for a few dollars🤔. Then I decided to search UA-cam. Maybe my blade and plates need sharpen. I will try this.
