Jim, now you know why Chris Squire was the greatest bass player on this planet! Chris was an incredible performer. Imagine seeing him play live as many times that I did. Chris was so cool. He would take the time to talk after a show, or accept some cigars that you brought for him. Or enjoy your company in a motel room to catch a quick buzz. Pictures are worth a thousand words and I have them and will cherish them forever! Jim we told you awhile back that the YES journey can be very emotional. Fish Out Of Water is just a side note of that magical journey. I have shed plenty of YES tears through the years. It only proves that your human. These artists and their musicianship are like no other. YES is PHENOMENAL!!!😎

You're certainly not alone in your reactions to this. I'd still regard this as my "most listened to" album over my entire life! From first listen at the start of 1976 to end of 1980 it was usually on my sound system when going to sleep. In the '90's I undertook university music studies and had the chance to really dissect the work.....amazingly complex use of odd-meter time signatures.

I’m sure I have listened to this album hundreds of times, and it never gets old. I remember the exact record store where I bought my first copy in about 1982. It remains one of my favorite albums to this day. There is genuine grandeur in this music. The lyrics are beautiful. The bass playing is expressive, every note has character. Everything just works. I had the great pleasure to meet Chris Squire once. For a while he went on tour with The Syn, his pre-Yes group. They came and played a small club in Milwaukee, and Chris and Alan White, who was playing drums, hung out at a table after the show to sign autographs and sell merch. They both seemed to be very genuine and humble people.

A semi-obscure record is Alan White's only solo record called Ramshackled. It's pretty good and quite fun, not in the same league as Fish Out Of water, but everyone who hears it digs it. Bill Bruford's jazz band called Earthworks is great, I highly suggest their first few records even if you aren't into jazz. And of course Steve Howe's Time album is top notch. And Jon has so much amazing stuff it's hard to know where to start.

Jim …what an amazing reaction to Fish Out Of Water! It is a joy to hear Squire and Bruford together again after Bruford left Yes in 1972. I like to think of this album as a mix of Yes and King Crimson. Fish Out Of Water is up there with the very best I have ever heard. Thx so much for this!

Despite being a huge Yes fan, for whatever reason I never got around to hearing this album until these videos of yours! Maybe I shouldn't have been, but I was quite surprised by how broad/lush/diverse the instrumentation was. Having grown up listening to 1970s electric Miles Davis albums on repeat, hearing a sudden jazzy soprano sax solo in a rock context with Lucky Seven sure got my ears to perk up with excitement! That Bruford/Squire drum and bass combo is also as unmistakably distinct as it is classic. Definitely an album I'm going to have to listen to multiple times to fully appreciate. Thanks for sharing this experience with us on UA-cam!

Decades later this album still stuns me. So glad you've now been introduced to it. Give some consideration to Moraz's solo album from 75 as well. Hi Jim, loved this album and hoped you'd get round to it. I find it too difficult to choose between this and Olias but IMHO Patrick Moraz's The Story of I just shades both Jon's and Chris's solo efforts from the mid 70s. Steve Howe's collaboration with Paul Suttine is worth the entry fee as is Moraz with Syrinx, rabbit hole is an understatement when it comes to Yes solos and collaborations and we've not mentioned Anderson and Vangellis yet. Fish out of water refers to his nickname when he shared a gaff with some of the band and their significant others for the amount of time he spent in the bath. He to me, was the driving force of Yes, he made the balls and Anderson fired them, he was essential to their sound and I can confirm through experience an absolute gent willing to spend time with fans in hotel bars, as was Alan White.

This perfectly captures Squire's personality: uniquely musically inventive and bombastically brilliant and also capable of the most subtle and gentle touches - like the lovely bass harmonics at the end.
As a boy, Chris was a chorister in a highly regarded London church choir, even performing in St. Paul's Cathedral. And the choirmaster he trained under, whom he credited with implanting his skills with vocal harmony and arrangement, was none other than Barry Rose who plays organ on this album. Another boy chorister who sang alongside him and later played in Squire's first band, The Syn, was Andrew Pryce Jackman who did the orchestral arrangements here. All in all, this is definitely his masterwork and the peak expression of his musical life.

My favourite of all the YES solo albums I've heard...to date...and, for me, just a sublime album. YES was always Howe/Anderson/Squire plus keyboards and drums (Not trying to downplay the roles of any of these, but they have been interchangeable!) Squire being the most...effective...bassist I've ever heard. This album is stunning in that it shows his musical abilities and allows him to express them. So unexpected, an album of surprising beauty and downright restrained funkiness. His "walking" bassline on "Safe" is simplicity itself, but allows the other instruments to shine through, and take their bows and make their impressions! Wonderful album!

Lucky Seven is a kind of Prog Noir almost like an old detective story... just the coolest riffs in a funky lowdown way .. but that bass tho. Psychic detective on the case in the house of musical mystery. and ... it's a dance track. You gotta move.
The Beatle's influence on the melodies, phrasing, arrangements, and intro/outro themes is so strong it sounds like they could have written a lot of it. They didn't, but they are in there somewhere, in spirit, at least. This album could never have come about without Sgt Pepper, and Yellow Submarine. Also the Bond Films soundtracks, and possibly The Avengers (the British TV spy show). The Last Track "Safe" really brings this out, and establishes Prog Rock as a new kind of classical music, forging its own genre. There are elements of pop, rock, classical, even ambient music melded.

I became a Yes fan in 75 so I’ve been fortunate to have listened to this album when it was released. Brilliant album. I think Chris sometimes gets overlooked for his great vocals. I’ve been to many Yes shows over the years and I always tried to get seats on his side of the stage. Always a master player and performer on stage. Andrew Pryce Jackman, who was a band mate with Chris in the Sun, did the orchestration and conductor on this album. He also played keyboards where Patrick Moraz wasn’t playing.

One of my very most prized possessions is my vinyl copy of Fish Out Of Water which Chris signed for me in Sydney in 2003. That copy is no longer playable because the stylus has just about worn right through the vinyl. I had been looking for a CD of the album for years & came across a new copy in a 2nd hand record shop in Adelaide. Thank God you can't wear out a CD. Then a year or so ago I came across a 2CD set with a new mix of the album on one CD and on the 2nd is the original mix plus single mixes of Lucky Seven & Silently Falling, as well as Run with the Fox & Return of the Fox by Chris & Alan White. My life would be far less complete without this album.
Chris' nickname in the band was Fish, apparently because he used to commandeer the shower in the dressing room after shows in the early days of Yes. That's why his feature piece on Fragile is called The Fish.

Chris was known as 'fish' because he spent so much time in the bath when he and 2 other members of YES shared a flat. Had the pleasure of an evening of Rick Wakeman at our local concert venue a couple of nights ago, Just Rick, a grand piano and a small keyboard rig. I said to my wife who was at the concert with me that it was no wonder the music of YES was so powerful and of a grand scale when you consider the talent of the musicians that made up the band, Rick, Jon Anderson, Steve Howe etc. and of course the master bass player, Chris Squire! Thanks Jim for bringing back memories, I purchased Fish Out Of Water when it was originally released, first time I've heard it in a long time. I do hope you continue your YES music journey.

  • @yes_head
    @yes_head 2 роки тому +2

His nickname was the "Fish" because of his "long stints in the bath." So yeah, the title is a pun on his nickname and that this was a solo album outside of Yes. There are so many great moments on this LP, but part of its charm are little things like Chris' vocal phrasings. For example, no producer today would ever let a singer phrase a line "Like a shiiip in a haaaa-aaarrr-bour." But it's things like that which give albums like this its memorable distinctiveness. This album is so good that people were asking Chris for YEARS "When are you going to make another solo album?" But IMO Fish Out of Water is the pretty much the musical equivalent of a mike drop. Conspiracy with Billy Sherwood has its moments, but doesn't come anywhere close to what Chris achieved here. RIP big guy.

Chris Squire was nicknamed The Fish by the other members in Yes as he used to stay too long in the bath. Jon Anderson jokingly compared his relationship to Chris as Jon being Obi-Wan Kenobi and Chris being Darth Vader. Also Jon being short and Chris being tall.

Back in the late 70's I was an avid reader of Sounds & Melody Maker (I'd given up on NME). I read an interview with someone who was involved with the Jam - I think it was their publicist, but I remember that he said (something like) that the world needed a Bruce Foxton solo album, but it didn't need any more Chris Squire solo albums !

I'm not sure it's possible to be a bigger fan of Chris Squire than I am. To me, YES was always the band Chris Squire formed to show off his truly unique talents, having found some other musicians who could see the wisdom of building their sound around his Industrial-Melodic bass inspirations. I absolutely loved the way he dominated their sound in YES' first decade, and sporadically (and impressively) in their second decade. Indeed, I must admit that I gradually lost my infatuation with YES' output over time as he seemed to accept a more traditional 'role' as the bass player in the band. YES w/out Chris "out front", was just a great progressive rock band, but without Chris' inspirations in the forefront of their group compositions, they just didn't quite ascend into the realm of _awe_ for me.
(I'm super looking forward to Jim's impressions of *I'm Running* on the *Big Generator* album, which was (IMO) YES' last truly fantastic musical creation, driven as it was from the outset by an inspired riff that came to him back in the days of the *Drama* album.)

@@JimNewstead Since you've been proceeding chronologically through YES' catalog, I think you should continue with that approach. Besides, the Tormato album has another Chris Squire gem, *On The Silent Wings of Freedom,* which definitely made the album worth buying. (Hearing it on the radio prompted me to go out & buy it right away...) And then after that, the *Drama* album had some really great Squire inspirations, headlined by *Tempus Fugit.* Just keep doing what you're doing, Jim. You give us YES fans a lot to look forward to... :)

Yes is a band that I will listen to every week and Chris Squire is my absolute favorite bassist! I have the video on full blast at the moment and am relishing the textures! BTW, the saxophonist is a fellow you could follow a bit more and he would lead you to King Crimson (same as Bill Bruford!) and also to a band I highly recommend: Camel! Just a suggestion for an album that sounds a lot like FOOW is Amarok (self titled , 2001). They are a Polish prog/jazz band and mostly instrumental with backing "vocalizations"
but they combine the symphonic instruments like strings and flute as well as more traditional melodic guitar solos.. you know I thought they were Brits the way they sound.

Every time I dig this album out, I am always surprised and I feel renewed afterwards. I noticed that his approach to arrangements was all about building a slow crescendo upon one theme, so there is a sense of repetitive cycles but always with a wonderful dramatic climax. This album and Jon's 'Olias of Sunhillow' are the only two solo albums from YES members that closely rival any from the YES collection.

  • @MisterWondrous

That last song, in particular, shows how integral Sir Squire was to the epic orchestral grandeur that was Yes at her best, and it was because Yes was a woman that she sang with such a high voice. King Crimson was the Yang male counterpart to Queen Yes, taking it up the Yin.
I had this at one time as an 8-track, I'm almost certain because I would listen to it, through only one speaker, mind, thus only half the music, in a noisy VW Beetle, identical to Abbey Road...and so I never got to hear how amazingly wondrous the music actually was...until today. And what a Christmas gift you have given to me! It all comes back to my mind's jukebox now, as I replay it in my head. RIP Chris!

    3/4/24 Chris’s 76th birthday.
Listening to this side so emotional to the point of spiritual. I realize an interesting difference between him and Jon. Jon’s favorite song is Awaken. It swells and raises your soul to the skies. Then there’s Chris whose love shows through at the end of this side where you want to drop to your knees in silent humility. Both are inspiring in nearly opposite ways. That’s what made them such a perfect team. Miss Chris so much.❤️

A wordsmith you are not, but you are one cool dude. One genuine good guy (bloke?!). Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas to you and yours. Squire was an incredible musician and certainly the driving force of Yes. Where Anderson was the voice of Yes, Squire was the driver, harmonizer, and orchestrator. To me, he seldom played the bass as the bass is normally played. He used it as a lead instrument and made the bass a more interesting part of the music. Nice having Bruford on the drums, too!!

The emotional power of this album has stayed with me for decades. After losing the LP, I remember having to order it as a Japanese import CD from Sid's Records and Tapes in Coral Springs, Florida, in some run down mall that is now part of the local school district, if it's still there, that is. The final minute and fifteen seconds are the most beautiful music I've ever heard. I felt that way partly because I didn't know how he got the sound. Not too long ago, Miguelbass on UA-cam explained it in a video, and the explanation only made it more magical in my mind. He called his imitation of the sound, "Rickenbacker Kiss," or something like that.
