  • The adrenal glands are end-organs that are merely responding to what they are told to do. If they are not producing enough cortisol, perhaps it is not the adrenal glands that are dysfunctional, but rather other elements of your physiology that needs addressing.

basically what he explains in the video is that what we call adrenal fatigue is not really the adrenals that are tired but the neuro transmitters that are not working correctly, therefore the result of not activating the adrenals correctly when needed. He basically gave the neurological reasons why adrenals might not function properly. Our body has a limit to be able to produce hormones and neuro-transmiters correctly and if we can't learn to handle stress differently or have a diet that supports a healthy hypothalamus and pituary gland then we start experiencing issues after a long period of not getting enough rest and recovery for the stressful lifestyle we have. In my case I'm convinced I have adrenals fatigue and I can tell you it was my fault, I'm 31 years old and for at least 10 years in a row I have been mistreating my body and mind. Getting to bed between 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. every day, weight training 4-5 times a week, few vegetables in my diet, being a gamer I was dealing with the wrong emotions for too long (adrenaline and cortisol are created by your body when playing those games and getting angry and playing strong emotions). All through the years my body showed me signs of fatigue which I never listened too. Now I have panic attacks here and there, I have trouble handling social interactions when not wanting them because I feel my eyes want to stay shut and my legs are wobbly (being tired all the time you usually start not liking long conversations standing up and even sometimes sitting down also). Now that I have finally realized all this is my fault, I know what to do to reverse those years of unhealthy lifestyle. Getting to bed between 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day, having a healthy diet, protein, complex carbs, healthy fats and veggies, vitamins B complex and vitamine C supplements, adaptogen herbs like ashwagandha and others to help your body cope with stress. The main solution is to learn to love yourself and treat yourself and your body in the nicest way as possible.

Well being a gamer in and of it's self is not treating your body and mind wrong.
As long as you are exercising and can sleep well and eat right nothing is wrong with gaming.
Just like watching TV it's okay as long as you do not do it to much and neglect a heathly life style.
Not all gamer's are irresponsible with it.
Me i don't play video game's much it's mainly a cellphone that is my problem.
On the other hand i occasinally play video game's.
I just don't do it all the time like when i was little.

      Do you regularly consume caffeine?
I also used to game a lot and weight train and mistreat my body by only sleeping 4 hours at 4am etc. Everyday I was taking energy drinks, preworkouts, caffeine pills, coffee, tea etc. to stay awake and alert until I started having an insane amount of fatigue throughout the day to the point where I had chronic fatigue syndrome and chronic brain fog. I realized I was abusing and addicted to caffeine and it was preventing me from having deep sleep. This lack of sleep then leads to a lack of recovery from the chronic stress and you try to fight even worse fatigue with more caffeine and a destructive habit is formed. Quitting caffeine is probably the best thing I've ever done for myself.

On my side I have simply stopped taking caffein later in the day. My last espresso is around 2-3 p.m. and I am sleeping way deeper since I decided doing so!

You're correct, stress is the root cause initially, however why does the condition remain when stress is gone or under control? Because stress burdens the liver and liver becomes congested. Adrenal fatigue and hypothyroid are both secondary conditions and not the root cause. Thyroid turns hypothyroid because it is very sensitive and the excess inflammation and free radicals cause it to swell up. Plus liver is responsible for the return signal to the hypothalamus and Thyroid.

Even as a layman I always knew something had to be causing people's adrenals from not working right. Mercury toxicity, candida infections, etc.,etc. are behind this problem. As explained, they create the inflammatory compounds like TNFa that block these adrenal receptors causing poor functioning adrenals. Good video, this is the explaination I was looking for. Too many people taking hydrocortisone or herbs, when the problem is something different.

Maria Maldonado As he explains in the video, this can be caused by a myriad of issues. You need to have the cause correctly diagnosed and treated to cure it. If he would explain this complex issue and then simply recommend a cure (especially if he's selling that cure himself for large amounts of money) then he would likely just be exploiting you. As it stands, he talks about misconceptions and possible explanations. He's providing you with information that you can use.

  • @paulharris9868
    @paulharris9868 8 років тому +19

Well in a nutshell, 'stress' is the trigger, any stress. Adrenal fatigue is when the body starts to not be able to produce enough cortisol. Cortisol is our major stress hormone, and so when we can’t produce enough of it you know, we get really tired because it keeps us awake, in the earlier stages, you might have trouble sleeping at night. Just having trouble getting to sleep and waking up multiple times throughout the night. A lot of people will experience blood sugar crashes, so they sort of get that “Hangry” feeling, where they are sort of hungry and angry at the same time. You know a lot of just mood and anxiety sort of symptoms because of the blood sugar crashes. Basically, these are going to be the main symptoms you are going to get from adrenal fatigue. So that is how you can sort of know if you have it, or if you should get checked out for it.But adrenal fatigue is caused by too much stress, for the short answer. Because our body can handle short bouts of stress, it is sort of made to be able to handle that. Our ancestors had to catch food to eat, they would have had these shorts bursts of stress. Then they would have had time to sit and relax, you there are these two extremes where one is the “Fight of Flight Mode”, where the body is stressed out, you are producing lots of cortisol, you are having that stress reaction. And then other times you know, you are really relaxing and taking it easy so your body can digest food, and do all that kind of thing. So, I would really like to call, instead of referring to it as Adrenal Fatigue, I usually like to refer to it as HPA axis dysfunction. That sounds really complicated, so, a lot of people don’t use that term, because it’s not a very good search term. And if you are trying to figure out what the heck is going on with your adrenals, you probably to not know much about the HPA axis. But, the HPA axis is basically the axis between the hypothalamus, pituitary, and the adrenal glands. All of them are connected. So what happens when we get stressed is, first: The HPA is the role center for the reaction to stress, and it regulates a lot of other body functions like digestion and immunity. So when we are in contact with a stressor, like being in traffic, the first thing that happens is something called CRH, which is Corticotrophin-Releasing Hormone, is released from the hypothalamus. CRH travels within the blood, to the interior pituitary gland, and stimulates the production of adrenal corticotrophin-hormone, also known as ACTH for a shorter way of saying it. ACTH goes through the blood to the adrenal cortex, which it ultimately stimulates the release of cortisol, which is the body’s main stress hormone (which we have already talked about), as well as some other hormones, like DHEA and others. So that’s a brief biochemistry lesson as to how the body reacts when we get stressed out. That’s what’s going on behind the scenes in the body. Cortisol works to help keep blood glucose levels elevated, and to help the body retain sodium so that our blood pressure stays high, and so that our blood glucose can keep up with the fuel demands of the brain and other vital organs during times of stress. So you know how blood glucose and high blood pressure do not sound like a good, but when you are talking about being in a stressful situation, those are the things that the body actually wants to prioritize, you know, you want to have that energy to keep going. Because if you are running away from a bear of something, that’s what you want!So be careful lets say if you are on an atkins or keto diet, as his comment about sugar, good carbs, might be just what you need and a simple back loading of carbs might throw you out of ketosis, but you will sleep like a baby and feel super the next day, so remember adrenal fatigue has various situations, you cannot 'generalize' it as caffeine, a specific deficiency in a vitamin (by the way, Vitamin D is really a hormone not a vitamin as he says). Hope this helps some on a more scientific or practical level. What he is abosolutely correct about is STRESS, find it, minimize or eliminate it and pay attention to your diet type and fitness level. What works for the normal 9-5 desk working eating a SAD diet will not apply to a keto adapted active person or athlete. This is VERY IMPORTANT to consider. good health.

    Yes!!
I'm not sure how much this talk will help the layperson but it's something practitioners should be talking about!
Another puzzle piece connected--thank you sir. It makes perfect sense!!
Cortisol suppresses immune function. (Aka prednisone).
Pathogens, et al are inherently stressful for the body, and if allowed to respond unchecked--cortisol would skyrocket and shut-off immune function.
iNSTEAD--the inflammatory cytokines plug up the adrenal receptors and just brute force prevent them from responding to the threat level, THEREBY preserving immune function.
    It's beautiful!!!!
It's moments like these that just make me feel so humbled and IN AWE of the exquisite function and intelligence of our bodies.

As a person with a centrally driven chronic pain disorder, this is an excellent explanation of how HPA axis disfunction can trigger myriad disorders..fibromyalgia,chronic fatigue, tmj.irritable bowel etc.
Once the hpa alters the brain and cns becomes maladaptive and begins to learn pain is the correct response, plastic changes take place..anyone out there who also suffers
can tell you the devastation is wreaks on your life and others around you.
You have to self educate ..find good info like the lancet journal or elsevier and read,if you don't understand it..read it again,go to basics..there is a lot of bullshit out there

I went to my medical doctor that did all kinds of 'blood' tests (which was the wrong kind of test to do in the first place to check my Adrenal glands). It wasn't until I ran across the alternative medicine world that I actually knew what was wrong. I have been miserable for the last few years with no help from the medical industry, as a matter of fact, they treated my fatigue as if it were 'no big deal'. What could it mean if a salivary cortisol test shows low levels, but a cortrosyn blood test says everything is normal?
I am miserable and always exhausted and can't sleep properly. But I've tested for everything my doctors can think of, and I don't know how to treat this other than by reducing stress as much as possible which is what I've been doing (to no avail).

  • @lovesgibson

why would that be more likely? it's more likely that adrenals ARE fatigued due to the stressful modern day times

Thomas Brubach -extreme mental stress nowadays compared to only physical stress in the past
-stress from the environment, aka pollutants, xenoestrogens, etc.
our bodies are dealing with a lot more harm nowadays than when we evolved.

Great series! Makes me wonder whether biologic TNF suppressing drugs (e.g., Embrel) raise cortisol as a by product? Is that why many of us with RA feel better when on a TNF suppressor? And feel even better when we take prednisone? Wonder if TNF suppressors would help Chronic Fatigue, another condition characterized by low cort?

    please help!
I tried taking Adipex (phentermine) for a month and it made me extremely tired, which was concerning seeing as how its supposed to give you tons of energy.
I googled it and found that Phentermine works on the hypothalamus portion of the brain to stimulate the adrenal glands to release norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger that signals a fight-or-flight response, reducing hunger.....
so why did it make me tired? Im usually pretty fatigued anyways, but after those pills not giving me any energy, i was worried something was wrong with my adrenal glands. Any advice would be appreciated

But is cortisol necessary for energy? Or is it only a hormone that arises in times of stress? Waking up. In the morning is not as stressful as running away from a tiger. Is cortisol therefore necessary all day long? Or only when you’re stressed.

So what do you do if you have like a severe cold going on with Adrenal fatigue.. what do you do to start getting your adrenals to work again if your immune system is out of whack due to being severely sick....

    • @johnsmith-ci6nr
      @johnsmith-ci6nr 9 років тому +1

Nothing. If your illness is just a severe cold, reduce the stress in your life and eat a healthy diet( plenty of vitamin C and D, etc).

He does point out inflammation blocking the receptors. Sex hormones regulate the metabolism of neurotransmitters so its likely the hormones creating the neurotransmitter imbalances

This is pretty much what I got out reading The Neuroendocrine Theory of Aging by Dr. Dean - a progressive loss of receptor sensitivity of the hypothalamus (and related structures in the brain) to negative feedback inhibition. I guess this is analogous to the loss of sensitivity to insulin.
A natural remedy seems to be to lower chronic stress. Dean suggests using certain herbs and drugs to restore hypothalamic (and peripheral) receptor sensitivity.

While cutting back on starches does help those with reactive/hypoglycemia, oftentimes reactive/hypoglycemia is a mere symptom of the adrenal fatigue. Unfortunately, with those with adrenal issues, you will be able to sustain a pizza, rice, potatoes binge for a while, but eventually, you will be making the problem worse. The trick is, listen to your body when fatigued, stop the starch/sugar/coffee binges, and realign your lifestyle towards healthful diet. Otherwise, you'll slowly get worse...

Adrenal fatigue- in nature animals get enlarged adrenals from predators nearby, cyclists get enlarged heart muscles from cycling! its a shame more people cant hear this. Imagine if all our organs "fatigued" i'd ask for a refund quickly.

Regarding starches - I have noticed that "amylose" is the main problem. Meanwhile, I personally am able to eat "amylopectin" without trouble. Amylopectin is found in glutinous rice (sticky rice), and it is the only grain I know of that I can eat safely.

So combine the causes he cites with say coffee addiction that ramps up adrenal function all day every day and you have more issues to deal with and can get adrenal fatigue. I lay off the coffee and take an adrenal supplement and crazy i can function again and dont feel like i have mono.

The body and mind are VERY complex. We can many times treat our health and bodies the best we can and still have an underlying problem. Doctors never test people for little known or rare diseases and conditions. I saw the TV special that a Coroner did on Anna Nicole's autopsy. It was very interesting...He said she suffered from a rare thyroid disease. I know there are more common thyroid disease that are easily tested..hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism which she didn't have. But like hypothyroidism she had low to probably no thyroid hormones in her body, her thyroid was being destroyed over time by this rare disease. If a person doesn't have thyroid hormones it causes the person to be extremely tired, gain weight easily, depressed etc. She had gained a lot of weight during her reality show and lost a lot of weight when she began promoting and taking the new diet pills (probably uppers). The pills and other illegal drugs we now know she consumed were used by her to give her energy and to lose weight. She must have suffered immensely her last years from this undiagnosed disease, then of course there was the devastating loss of her son. The Doctor who did this special concluded what we all knew she died of - a drug overdose. It is just that the Doctor didn't seem to go back to the beginning and conclude she died trying to self-medicate from a very serious, undiagnosed disease of the thyroid. I am not saying people should take drugs to treat themselves when they suffer from some health issue like this. But have compassion and understanding for a person going thru this horror. It is a real tragedy that noone knew she truly was sick until the autopsy.... I pray it is not inherited...wish I could get a message to her father, Larry, to have his daughter tested (just in case) God Bless her and keep her~

so in a case where the cause of low cortisol is bacteriological - and if its a bacteria that cannot be eliminated, such as in Lyme, then what is the solution?
