Marianne is an underappreciated character
And Anne is a real snob towards her and sometimes towards others (like servants, tennants or her being so proud of her "lineage"). She's got some real misogynist attitudes sometimes, but well, it's the 19th century, where this seems to have been a part of her way dealing with society's structures and her own very lively and intelligent mind which wasn't respected for women.

@@ShayCat Yeah, I think so too. At that time there were no role models for her, no women's movement like we have since the 20th century. It's her internalized misoginy which she isn't pointing at herself (as she's got this high energy, drive anbd selfesteem) but sometimes against other women. I also think she got bored quite easily when people weren't as daring or bright as she was and because women weren't respected & couldn't have the same education as men and their selfesteem was also informed by society, she might have been bored by some of those "tamed", restricted women. When you have a very bright mind/intellect you need a strong "heart" to NOT be arrogant at times.
Also I think when you have those rigid polarizing ideals regarding women/men which were the status quo at that time, it's difficult to not reproduce it sometimes in some ways ...
Marianne is a worry wart and greedy.
The best part is in the penultimate episode when one of the Rawson brothers humiliates Marianne, and Anne’s protective reaction is “No one bullies my little sister! Only I get to bully my sister!”
They rarely argue, about anything.

banns. The reading of the banns was a legal step to getting married.
They're "Banns"- a statement declared the two to be betrothed in church each week for three weeks, and if no-one objects to the marriage, they become married just by those declarations (and no one objecting).
Too bad it's not "bands". That makes it even funnier to me.
Gemma Whelan needs to win a best supporting award for this show. They ARE HILARIOUS on screen together!!!
I agree to see her on game of thrones this sword wielding character and to see her here shows how deep her range is..she is definitely underrated and definitely should get awards for this funny character he and suranne are quite believable as sisters

Well, sounds like you need to brush up on your grasp of British accents if you want to watch this. Or turn on the captions...that's one of the reasons why they're there.
This selection of clips portrays Anne in an incredibly unflattering light lmao. Selfish, petty, classist.
As someone who hasn't watched the show yet, I disagree, hyper and not a great landlord and employer but definitely not any more unflattering than Marianne.

As much as I admire Anne for what she achieved she really wasn’t very nice to her sister or others.
She did love her sister. They still had a bond. In that time period, social class levels were critical and important to Lister as it helper her have some sort of acceptance of her lifestyle choice. And, she did appear to believe that Marian was making a mistake with her engagement, for several reasons.
Why doesn't she have a Yorkshire accent like her sister?

Rossana Fioravanti She lived in a world where she would be judged by her family members conduct, with no means to be truly independent. As much as Anne’s “no fucks left to give attitude” is admirable, when directed at her sister it’s also selfish. Instead of empowering Marian, she belittles her.

. Never married. Left Shipden Hall in 1836, when Anne inherited it and lived at Skelfler House, Market Weighton.
Was NOT in favour of Anne and Ann's relationship afaik.

No - she didn't. She did get engaged but, for whatever reason, the wedding didn't happen. She ended up inheriting property at Market Weighton and moved there. Lived a long life and died aged 84 in 1882.
She pushed her sister. Seemed annoyed. No apology
Marian is petty and jealous.
Anne is a snob, but she was chosen by her dying Uncle to keep Shibden Hall in good keep. Anne Lister certainly did that. Would love to go to Halifax and visit the Shibden Hall estate.
That’s the relationship between the two of them. They get in arguments and petty fights and do things like push each other but when it comes down to it, they deeply care about one another. Much like real sisters.
They have great (and positive) interactions throughout the show, they have positive character growth among MANY characters...this adaption is so well done. They're very believable as sisters. Girls are petty, as a girl, I assure you, sisters can definitely be so. Marian's living in Anne's shadow, too, you have to think about them as 3-dimensional characters, as they were real people, after all. And don't forget about the strain between them: Anne will never marry and have kids, but she's running the estate; Marian wants to marry and have children, therefore will have more right to the estate but not the prowess to do so as Anne is able to in her wits and industry (and steadfast claim). Very deep characters, love it- wish I could have met real Anne! What a woman
They are real human who lived and walked on earth almost 200 years ago, of course they are flawed, they are no saints.
Why should she apologize?
