On this trip I was able to go on an amazing adventure blue lining the backcountry smoky mountains for Native Brook Trout! I think I caught the most beautiful fish I've ever seen on this trip as well! This video was sort of thrown together after weeks of trying to figure out how to make this video happen because I didn't have enough of the right footage. I've fished for native Brook Trout in Northern Wisconsin for the past 6 decades and I don't think I've ever seen more beautiful brookies. Those spots and orange flash on their dorsal fin is unbelievable!
It was an incredible fish! And it was caught in the beginning of September which isn’t that close to the spawning season there so the colors absolutely blew my mind! Thank you for watching!!
That's because they are the sacred "Southern Appalachian Brook Trout" strain and have been in the southern Appalachians since the glaciers melted from the Ice Age. They're actually Char and not trout.
Appalachian Brookies are in a league of their own. A very, very isolated phenotype.

That big one was one of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen. I need to find that creek, not just for the fish but for the scenery alone. Wow.... just wow.... one of my favorite things about brook trout, is when youre fighting a fish and the start walking across the top of the water just right, it looks like flames dancing on the waters surface

The first brook trout I ever caught were in the Little North Fork of crazy woman creek outside of Buffalo WY in august 1981 .........stunning beautiful fish

The Smokies are super cool and it's wild seeing reintroduced elk roaming around like that. I'm so close to the smokies and still have never fly fished around it but definitely have to. Loved the editing too, you're at the level i'm trying to get to. Awesome vid! :D

Reminds me of hiking into the Allegheny National Forest for brookies.

Enjoyed this video. I literally fish the locations you videoed pretty often. The Smokies is by far my favorite place in the world. Believe it or not, some of the spots you videoed has browns in there that exceed 25in and they’re wild too. The Smokies offer som much more than fishing in general. It puts you back in time to when people truly lived off the land. You can literally see where they built small communities or simply settled in places where they were isolated. It is fascinating to see how civilization was at one time and able to compare it to now. But great video and especially the narration.

Elk in the Smokey Mountains???

Way back when I was young there was a girl and her father. He fly fished in those upper streams of NC and the almost impenitrible Balsams. Her father went to a small college to teach math and they offered him room and board. A room in the dorm and meals in the cafeteria. Depression time, yes. He rose to Vice President, but did not see his daughter marry. She married me and 60 years later I would have to lay his daughter to her rest up hign in the Balsams where he fished, the Great Smokies.
