I was actually wondering about it, they did a great job indeed! I didn't realize that having non lacquered horn could cause such damage to the metal over time. That's probably why Schmid himself recommends to buy it lacquered originally. I've seen an old Alex 103 fully repaired and relacquered, it's not common, but not that rare 👍 Here in Europe we have most instruments always lacquered.
I laquered my old alex 103 after 4 years, and it wasnt noticable. On my new ricco kühn i choosed it unlaquered but the finish was laquered and also it wasnt noticable, even my collegues didnt notice a difference. I think its mostly a mental thing. It Looks different so most people expect some differece in Sound. Have fun with you new old horn!
Many years ago, I brought my Alex 103 to the old Mainz workshop for repairs, they did a great job. However, while I was waiting for picking it up, I tried some (3 or 4) horns at the test rooms, and there was an non-lacquered 103 that was noticeably better than any other one I've tried there (lacquered or not). I don't know what makes a horn better than others of the exact same model. I really wish I could've exchanged it for mine 😅😭
Glad to hear you're happy with the repairs! I have a 1958 Chambers Contempora that will likely need a valve rebuild and overhaul in a few years, and Mr. Houghton is high on my list of people to talk to about it, when I'm ready to shell out the bucks.
I had a question for you Scott, I’m a college horn major and double bassist who’s been playing since 6th grade. I originally was a double bass major until our professor retired and I was forced to switch to majoring in Horn. I’m a jazz bassist by trade. My question is about my embouchure. When I started horn my directors weren’t horn players so I’m self taught. The way I play involves using as little of my top lip as possible. I was first chair all through jr. high and high school, so I can play well. Though with my embouchure the way it is it means I have to change it while I’m playing to hit lower notes. My horn professor says I should be fine and may not have to make an embouchure change. I’m just curious if you think it will be necessary to have any chance of playing in a professional ensemble?
it went from looking like an ancient relic in a museum to a brand new shiny horn
Dennis cleaned and rolled out my little dents on my horn and he is great. Thanks to him 👌
I loved the looks of the unlacquered horn, but protection against corrosion is a very valid argument.

Houghton has always been my go to
Karen Houghton was my Dad and I's private lesson teacher :D. Love your content
it’s so pretty!!!
I live like 10 minutes away from a Houghton Horns shop. It's really cool seeing their wall of horns.
Your horns are beautiful.
Do you have any tips for getting better at slurring
I wish there are lacquered horns that look like they are unlacquered :((((
Edit: Anyways congrats!
It is possible to matte lacquer a horn though! Check out the horn used by this guy @hornsemble he plays on a Dürk
Do you think buying a triple horn is worth it? or should I stick with a double horn.
It's so cool ❤❤❤
Shymphony "horn signal" from Hadyn ❤💎🎵
Do they repair Alexander Triples? I need mine restored and lacquered. Was your repair expensive?
They definitely could! You’d have to call/email them to get an estimate for the repairs you want done
I play French horn in school band and mine has a couple dents on it

what would happen if you pressed both of the thumb keys at once?
It just goes to the Eb horn, same as pushing only the top lever
