This is by far the most creative and skilled composer and keybord player in the history of popular music. And that is perfectly fine, of course. But actually listening to his compositions and enjoying the music being played is even more satisfying. Thank you for your music and the inspiration!
In those compositions he was inspired by contemporary classical music and found a way to use it in a unique rock style. Especially in Karn Evil and parts of Tarkus he was so far ahead of the normal rock standard - even bands like Yes or Genesis used pretty simple harmonic and melodic structures in comparism with Emerson. - But ordinary listeners and reviewers? They obviously couldn´t understand what ELP were doing, called it bombast and cold virtuosity etc.
Here is an absolute genius at work. How fortunate are we all to have enjoyed his compositions all these years, and for years to come. Been following him since the Nice days.
A genius. I saw him with ELP live. He changed my life. Made me realise us humans are capable of wonderful things. He helped me create some nice artworks of which I’m proud and inspired me in life. Love him.
Hold on a minute, so Keith wrote that in his head and then he transcripted it? What a genius. What he's playing is the actual, no modifications at all, Fugue from Trilogy
This is just for their documentary. The Trilogy album was released in 1972 and this was filmed in 1973. Just realize that there happens to be a film crew available when he's writing a song. He's good but not that good.
Genius Genius Genius Geniusssssss!!!!!! this very short video is as good as any great live performance from ELP, 'cause it shows the very essence of emerson working in his music as a very natural thing. great vid. thanks
I can play Van Halen stuff on guitar, but I still cannot get down the fast hybrid picking part in The Sage, and the KE9 is very difficult due to the extremely fast alternate picking in his solo. His flamaco style solo on Nobody Loves You Like I do is incredible. His Tarkus solo on Welcome Back My Friends, while not technically very impressive, is very interesting tonally. Just some of his lesser known guitar work I was pointing out.
Man this is a great video...thanks...To Think ELP YES and Genesis packed stadiums and arenas filled w young fans who delighted in this music...hard to believe ...can't see Gaga playing Karn Evil 9 2nd Movement at the Garden ...can you?
Useful insight on the process. It seems so daunting to actually go through the process of individually writing down all those notes, but I guess it's gotta be done one way or another.
Apparently some ppl viewing this clip think Keith wrote EE while a film crew just happened to be at his house. Also the Trilogy album was released in 1972 yet this was filmed in 1973, part of their Brain Salad Surgery documentary.
@progmeck1 The DVD you're thinking of is “The Manticore Special,” available as an official ELP DVD. The "Beyond the Beginning" DVD is also a must-have, but doesn't include this bit.
He was a classically trained musician w compositional roots in 20th century composition...but he loved ragtime blues rock roll and a big crowd. 1st and greatest rock keyboardist...(not counting shtick like Jerry Lee LEWIS) He made Elton and Billy Joel( excellent piano players) look like hackers...because he was the keyboard g-d...ask Bob Moog
Re: Jaco "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up". Leather jackets? Histrionics? Hey, the guy was in a rock band. Gotta make a living, you know? It was entertaining and got the band attention. Then you hear something like this or his magnificent Hammond work and...well, I mean, what's to criticize? The man is one of the keyboard giants...and no more of a show-off than Chopin! Emo is a living legend!
@mags jay Hi mags jay. Goodness my comment to which you replied is 10 years old!!! Still that does not change the truth of it. Yes indeed he made us sit up and take notice. Up there with Bach or Chopin? Probably not. Rick Wakeman? Definitely. Terrible the way his life ended though. Saw Carl Palmer at the Stables in Milton Keynes last year. Good as he was, he was like Sting without the Police or Zeppelin without Bonham. But what was I expecting? The same youthful Carl we are used to seeing in old recordings. Of course not. Our generation which produced these maestros is now beginning to expire. Being a guitar player myself Steve Howe is my other hero. Look at my channel for a few clips I uploaded. Cheers.
good ol' reel-to-reel. my dad fixed one recently :D it was pretty wicked sick seeing something so old up and running again, disco blasting through our house :)
One must understand three points about ELP: firstly for so many people a rock band has to have a guitar player, their imagination is just too poor to face the fact that it works without. That´s the first big minus. Secondly for many people virtuosity is something really bad - oh I forgot - keyboard virtuosity of course. But when they hear a fast guitar player it´s totally different of course. - And thirdly many people just don´t understand that Emerson wrote complex composition.
@Marillionboy This was a converted barn attached to the 400 year-old house he bought that burnt down. The main beam was a salvaged oak mast. All burnt to the ground, don't remember the year- 75 or6. You should read his autobiography! Greg's supposed to be writing one, too.
Kieth & Rick Wakeman are 2 people I've seen that actually write music scores. Obviously there's tons more.... Regarding Keith's awesome musician skills, Rachel Flowers is the nearest to Keith's talent.
Where does this footage come from? Is there more elsewhere I could watch? I have been entirely captivated by K.E.'s approach to improv my whole life and it has had a profound effect upon me.
Marillionboy this may be the barn outside his home that had all his equipment which a tractor ran into in 1986 and damaged the GX1. He joked that ELPowell should have been called Emerson lake and plow!
I think he's overrated as organ player and totally underrated as piano player. Emerson at piano is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately he hasn't ever recorded much at piano. He's got a wonderful tecnique and, especially, a very great taste in improvisation.
When You're a genius, people will always question you. Unfortunately, This is so staged.......Keith trying to transcribe what he's already done., bit makes for good tv......but everything that Carl and Keith did was about pushing the tempo. I adore his work, I have studied his music for years......and to this day.....there are a handful who can actually play these compositions......This, Is the Barn that the Tractor mowed down with his GX1.........God rest this man's soul. For the first time in 6 and a half years, he's at peace.
I have a question - I've seen ELP and heard Keith speak at shows and on TV and stuff, and this guy doesn't sound like him at all - what's up with that? Is it dictated somehow? Or what? I don't get it.
I think the source tape's playing a bit fast; I need to get the DVD to check. But the younger Keith did have a higher-pitched voice -- listen to his occasional vocals on Nice records for example -- so it may be correct.
It makes me sick that just those reviewers came out with europhic critics when it came to punk, house and other primitive music styles. - So you better watch out! If you listen to a guitar virtuoso - thats ok. Keyboard virtuoso is really bad. If you listen to modern classical music - thats ok. Modern rock music with musical ambition - thats bad. In general better not listen to rock bands, where all musicians have a high technical standard - thats suspicious. Sex Pistols - thats the right choice!
Not a fantastic, but a very good one. And at the same time a very good singer, bass player and composer. So the ideal third man for a three piece band.
There is not much different between a good shredder and this. Except guitar sherders I am thinking of are probably more into bach and stuff as emerson is more into contempory composers I think.
@@FukiMakai The Works album hit the shops in March 1977 ! Pretty impressive to write a Concerto, record it with an orchestra and have it in the shops in three months. The truth is he was probably writing it for a few years and without doubt it was recorded in 1975/6
I deeply admire Emerson for his talents but live he is playing much too fast, nearly destroying his own music! Just compare this to the brilliant studio version!
I don't agree with this. Emerson was well above standard even in his own time. It's not like when ELP were making albums every pop star was a virtuoso at their instrument. Pop stardom has nothing to do with talent! It has all to do with production and cliches. Plus I think John Mayer is a well above average guitarist and definetly the best choice as an example of a pop star with no talent. I bet you are some 16yo who thinks they are really special for liking this sort of stuff. Pathetic.
We need a movie dedicated to the Keith Emerson life
This is by far the most creative and skilled composer and keybord player in the history of popular music. And that is perfectly fine, of course. But actually listening to his compositions and enjoying the music being played is even more satisfying. Thank you for your music and the inspiration!
Rest in Peace, Keith Emerson. A truly brilliant and innovative musician has left us...
Thank you for the music.

Many people can and have played the stuff Keith Emerson wrote quite well...after the fact...the real mystic comes from what came out of his head.
Keith Emerson will never die.
Endless Enigma.
WOW.
This is my favorite ELP song ever.
And to see Keith composing it really blows me away. Thanks for posting this.
My favorite too

The description says it was filmed in '72.
Tears for a true musician composer . TY and RIP
The Maestro lives on in his music.
I’ve instructed my family to play this at my memorial. I’m a female composer on guitar and totally hear his influence in my music! Miss you keith😢❤
Priceless footage

Awesome to see him at work, wish this was longer!
Oh how I miss him....
This is "Fugue" (endless enigma part 1 1/2) it goes EE Part 1, Fugue, EE part 2. I really like fugue its a really calming song.
And how nice it would be to see Lake creating the insane bass lines he contributed to that opus, too.
Thanks for everything , Keith .
he`s truly my music HERO since my childhood!
and this rare video very very interesting
would u like to post the complete version pls?
thx
A true musical gift to us all.

I would give anything to see ELP live. They never came to New Zealand, and they broke up a long time ago.
+LilHaseProductions I saw them 3 times in the 1970's. Sorry you missed out.
+Mark Burgh ...Lucky Man....you are indeed!!!!
Molte grazie.
if i wrote something like that i wouldn't even bother writing it out.
If i wrote something like that I wouldn't be building houses
If I wrote something like that I wouldn't be working in a chemistry lab
Thank you for this.
How can someone be so amazing?!!
Useful insight on the process. It seems so daunting to actually go through the process of individually writing down all those notes, but I guess it's gotta be done one way or another.

That's a pretty nice studio. Looks like a tech. startup with the pong and foosball tables.
Why couldn't we make 1972 last forever?
Apparently some ppl viewing this clip think Keith wrote EE while a film crew just happened to be at his house. Also the Trilogy album was released in 1972 yet this was filmed in 1973, part of their Brain Salad Surgery documentary.
In a few hundred years two composers of the progerssive rock era will be considered as important as Bach or Beethoven: Keith Emerson and Ian Anderson.
Holy crap! I NEED to see the rest of this film! Where can I see it?
funny you should mention that- I've noticed the same thing. All the early footage I have of him, his voice is higher pitched, much different than now.

Totally effortless by the prog king.

It wasn't them that killed technically progressive music. In my opinion, it was marketing and video. You can thank MTV for starters.

He recorded alot of piano, but it is often not a big part of the songs.
Fuga
It's Piano Concerto No. 1, not The Endless Enigma, which had been recorded the previous year.
It's Fugue from Endless Enigma (the part between parts 1 and 2) and it's from 1972. Piano Concerto was composed and recorded in 1977.
There are two edits of this film. In one we do indeed see him composing what would would become part of the Piano Concerto.
