I am from Michigan and my husband and I had gone to Marquette to visit family there years ago. My mother in law's parents were from Cornwall, England and Grandma Cox would make home made pasties all the time. I loved mine with ketchup. So, so good! I do have the recipe but haven't attempted to make them yet. My husband and I visited Michigan last October and drove to the UP to visit the Maritime museum that houses the bell to the Edmund Fitzgergerald. The ship sank in Lake Superior during a terrible storm in 1975 and Gordon Lightfoot wrote a song about it, which I find very haunting. We then visited Mackinac Island. Lovely time of year to go is in the fall.
Yes, we have visited that museum and it is amazing. I’m sorry I missed this comment somehow but thank you for leaving this information. I would love to go in the fall. I was supposed to go last year and our air conditioner went out and I had to stay home to get it repaired. Thank you for watching our channel and I am going to attempt to make pasties this winter myself. I’ll let you know how it goes!
There's just something comforting. And watching you guys do these food tastings. It's enjoyable it's knowledgeable and very entertaining. I'm sure it must be weird for you.. But also exciting. You just never know. What people will fall in love with. I wish you both. Nothing but the greatest of success.
😀 born and raised in massachusetts where we had rutabagas regularly (fr.canadian heritage), but never had a pasty! tried making with some buttermilk soaked round steak, and really enjoy them👏 thank you for the videos
Man, I love your grub and I love your vibe up there. You have some of the most amazing biking trails and beautiful scenery. I have ever seen in my life. It is a blessing that you live there.❤️
My mom's family is from Minnesota, my grandma had a recipe for pasties using beef roast carrots and potatoes along with the gravy from the roast. I now make them and they are to die for. Lot of work but well worth it. My husband and I tried some pasties from the UP in Michigan, we both like my grandma's pasties way more.
@@jennifermountaingirl I use a never fail pie crust, you can find that online, the day before I'm going to make pasties I make a chuck roast in the crock pot with onion, salt and pepper. I make the gravy from the drippings in the crock pot. When I put the chuck roast in the crock pot I also add about a cup of water. Cook that on low for around 9 hours. I make mashed potatoes for the first meal and make enough potatoes for the pasties but those I don't mash I leave them cubed. The next day I make the pie crust and roll it out on a floured surface. On half that rolled out pie crust I spread the gravy, and the gravy does have to be cooled overnight in the refrigerator, on top of the gravy I put the chuck roast which I shred for the pasties, carrots I also made the day before, and the potatoes, then put more dollops of gravy on top of that. Then fold over the pie crust to cover the food. With a fork seal the edges of the pie crust and cut 3 slits on top to let steam out while cooking to avoid the pasty from bursting open. Bake on a cookie sheet at 375 degree oven for at least an hour. You want the pie crust to get brown. My grandma also put butter on top as she served them. When you make the pie crust slowly add the flour you don't want it to be to dry as it will make it tough to fold over and seal. It does take a bit of practice to get that right. You can however buy frozen pie crust, thaw it and roll it out as well. I have done that but prefer the never fail pie crust from scratch. It reminds me of my grandma. For sure the pie crust is the hardest part but it makes the pasty as far as I'm concerned. I am 66 years old and have been making pasties for at least 30 years. And still I think my grandma's pie crust was the best, she was a baker for 40 years in a restaurant and a hospital. Much good luck and remember they don't have to look perfect they just have to taste good. Much good luck to you.
What a beautiful video. I enjoyed all this knowledge. It felt like a travel experience. The view behind you was mesmerizing. Off topic, Jenn, you must try the new tempura taco kit from Costco and the new orange dreamsicle cheesecake. To die for! Keep up the good work, look forward to all your videos.
Currently in the U.P. in Paradise, in a cottage on Lake Superior. Thank you for the video! I love seeing what everyone else does while visiting the U.P.
I was so excited to see this because I used to read the Cat Who books, and the characters in the books always ate pastys . I have never had one and only imagined what they looked like back then. Totally forgot about it until your video popped up!

I've been eating pasties all my life. I just made some large ones last month and put them in the freezer. I can take them out and bake them anytime I need a quick filling meal. Great video. Thanks from Canada 🇨🇦.
Those pasties kind of remind me of a larger, savory, fried pie. We’ve been to the U.P. and it is absolutely postcard perfect in the Fall of the year! Loved Macinaw Island! Absolutely terrified of the Macinaw Bridge though!!😳 I watched a really great documentary on Macinaw Island and how they recycle and maintain the island. Fascinating!😊

We really appreciate you watching our videos!❤️
I love the music you chose for this video.❤. I'd choose the gravy with a pasty. Never had one, but I wonder if some of the county fairs around there, make them and sell them. Glad you caught some fish Rich. Sounds like a beautiful vacation spot❤.
What a beautiful view of the lake! Both of the sandwiches looked delicious and it would be hard to decide which one to choose 😋 Can’t wait to see the upcoming pizza video👍🏼 Prayers for travel mercies 🙏❤️
Looks yummy! I've had pasties in England and Scotland. And for many years I would buy them at our annual Highland Games festival in Ligonier PA. Yours are much larger. The ones I had were all like smaller pies, but meat and yummy! Thank you for sharing the ordering info. I will be ordering soon. Love all your videos -- Karen
Well that was interesting Rich and Jen. The food looked good and I would take my Pasty with gravy. The lake looked so peaceful, what a spot. I love the pups on the deck with you. Thank you for including us on your travels. Blessings always.😊
I lived in Marquette, MI growing up. I have lived in NM since 1977, and really enjoyed this Video. My grandmother had a house in Negaunee on Teal lake. I ate a lot of pasties growing up, and my grandmother used to make hand grenade pasties which were smaller pasties.

@@jennifermountaingirl Well, actually a long neck...I'm in Wisconsin, but just over the bridge from Michigan. Very familiar with Marquette, Negaunee and Yoopers!
I live in Glen Arbor Mi. We love the pasties that we get in Traverse city and Cadillac. One thing to note is that the Pastie crust is more like a flakey pie crust vs. a yeast crust. I love them with Gravy but may try catsup the next time! 🙂
My Dad was from Sault Ste Marie, so we still have family in the UP and get up there often. Pasties are always on our schedule because we love them. My wife and I are both gravy people! As I write this, it's 96 degrees in Slidell, LA, so I'm extremely envious of your temps in the UP. We are headed to Pigeon Forge next week, so we're hoping for temps even just a little better than here! We really enjoy the channel.
I live in the Grass Valley area in Northern California and pasties are sold here. The Cornish miners worked in the gold mines. The mines were closed but the pasties survived.
I've eaten pasties before. They're like Spanish empanadas. Both make a great picnic food. Another British food I like is the sausage roll. It's like pigs in a blanket, but it uses sausage meat and a puff pastry. That's really good too. I worked with a guy from Nigeria about 30 years ago and he would make his pastry from scratch and the sausage mixture. They were out of this world.
You need to stop in St Ignace and get some smoked fish spread. Also a good food review would be Clyde's Hamburgs in St Ignace. Its a cool little drive in. We are from Florida but I am from MI and we go to the UP twice a year and Mackinac Island.
I grew up in Michigan, (now line in Arizona ) I have never been to the UP but have had the Pasty's. They are yummy. I was just in MI a few weeks ago I love & miss all of it.
My Dad was Swedish and he ate those all the time as achild. I made them once for him. It is an involved process. Originally the crust was made with lard but, I used Crisco. I'm trying to remember what I put inthem(I was in my early 20's and 72 now). I think I did ground beef, onion, parsnips, carrots and potatoes. I was asked to use a lot of salt and pepper because they tend to be bland. He ate them and said I did a pretty good job There was a place near us that made them and used to buy them by the dozen and then bring them home and freeze them. I used parsnips because he didn't like rutabaga. I have relatives from way back in Michigan and also a good friend from Alpena.Hey Jen, My Mother was born and raised in Columbus. Believe I am going to have to order some pasties. Did I miss it? How do we order?
I love your guys videos! Those look so tasty. Me and my parents live in Chicago but go to Mackinaw yearly. Usually stop at Bavarian Inn (great chicken spot called Zenders). Definitely going to try these next time we are up that way!
I on occasion like to watch a British fellow named John Kirkwood. He makes a lot of savory pies and pasties. They look good but he likes a thick crust and lots of gravy. Who doesnt love gravy? I have yet to try to make one. I do want to try Jens broccoli salad. Costco used to make a good one but dropped it for some reason. Ill stop now. Happy Day from Harlem, Ga.
i’ve heard the upper peninsula is so beautiful and from your video that looks to be true. I’ve heard of pasties and they sound wonderful. Never heard of the other but that looked yummy too. i enjoy your adventures so much! Congrats on the approaching 10,000 subscribers. Wishing you at least 90,000 more! Oh, and such a pretty song you had in the background. Have fun at the cabin! 💕
We've been to Lawrys before too. My hubby likes pasties but not me! You need to get some smoked white fish while you're up there and film that. I will eat a little of that but not too much.
Hi there from near Grand Rapids Michigan! Love the UP and pasties. I have made them Jen and it was fairly easy. If you'd like the recipe, I'd be happy to share it with you.
I like pasties with gravy because the inside can be kind of dry sometimes. I lived in Sault St. Marie back in 1980 and I could get a big pasty for like $3. They did have a bunch of different flavors but I liked the traditional best. I'd like to subscribe to your channel but as soon as I subscribe to a channel youtube takes it off my feed and I never get a notice for new videos and they never even show up on my home page or as a suggestion. it's a pain in the butt to go lookin for em.
Have tou ever heard of a Runza native to Nebraska a German sandwich made with dough stuffed with cabbage and hamburger meat and onion cooked in oven for 20 min there are Runza restaurants in Nebraska that serve them very popular my Grandma made the dough by hand when i was a kid sliced the cabbage and onion homade is very good there is a runza casserole on line try it Nebraska is full of German immigrants cheese runza now and awiss mushroom runza
Oh my pasties are sooo good. Have had my fair share of them, since living in England. Also have made a few in my life as well. Interesting fact about pasties, the Cornish wives made them for their coal miner husbands, and made the dough with a handle, but they had one side with the meat and potatoes, the other apple pie filling. I agree with you, I prefer ketchup.
So like I said, my girlfriend and I like watching you two... If you're ever in the Pittsburgh area you guys can give us a call... My girlfriend would like to meet Rick and I would love to meet you... Maybe we can make it happen😊
There was a restaurant in PCB Florida that was called Eat my Pasty. Unfortunately I haven’t made it there to date and don’t know if they are still open, but will visit next trip for sure if they are. Have you ever tried a Runza?? I know they have them in Nebraska and Iowa, but not sure how many other Midwest locations.

I grew up in Michigan, (now line in Arizona ) I have never been to the UP but have had the Pasty's. They are yummy. I was just in MI a few weeks ago I love & miss all of it.
It is a beautiful state! I have never been to Arizona!
My beautiful State of Michigan
It truly is!
I looked them up and just ordered a dozen beef. Kind of expensive to ship but probably worth it.
I still have four left and I will order more when I’m out. I think it’s worth it!
If you figure out a recipe for the pastie please share it! They both looked good, but that pastie has my mouth watering! Good video yinz!
Thanks!!😊
I live in Michigan and have been there. Thanks, guys.
Such a great place!!😊❤️
@@jennifermountaingirl You should try Clyde's Drive-in in St. Ignace, MI
Hi Jen and Rich! Do they offer any sides with the sandwiches? Loved the pictures at the end!
No sides! They’re so big you don’t really need any!!😊😂
This weekend is Pasty Fest in Calumet MI.
We have a real good pasty shop here by me in AZ. They are delicious!
Oh my gosh I love them!!
I love your guys videos! Those look so tasty. Me and my parents live in Chicago but go to Mackinaw yearly. Usually stop at Bavarian Inn (great chicken spot called Zenders). Definitely going to try these next time we are up that way!
I LOVE Mackinaw Island- we are going to hit it again next year! Thanks for joining us!
Been eating pasties for almost 60 years..I'm a traditional fan.
That’s awesome!😎
I on occasion like to watch a British fellow named John Kirkwood. He makes a lot of savory pies and pasties. They look good but he likes a thick crust and lots of gravy. Who doesnt love gravy? I have yet to try to make one. I do want to try Jens broccoli salad. Costco used to make a good one but dropped it for some reason. Ill stop now. Happy Day from Harlem, Ga.
I’ll have to look him up! The broccoli salad is delicious!! Next pasty I’m having with gravy- I brought 4 frozen ones home!!
i’ve heard the upper peninsula is so beautiful and from your video that looks to be true. 💕
Thank you so much!!😊
We've been to Lawrys before too. My hubby likes pasties but not me! You need to get some smoked white fish while you're up there and film that. I will eat a little of that but not too much.
Thanks we were going to but we ran out of time! We are home now, but maybe next summer when we go up again. Thanks for watching.❤️
Looked good! You should pit stop in Toledo and do a review at Tony Packo’s! Happy 10k!!!🎉🎉🎉
Thanks!! We should!!
Gravy is the way to go!
I’m definitely doing gravy with the ones I brought home!!
This made me think about my daddy who was from Cheboygan in the UP.
Have you ever had Pasty’s?
Cheboygan is in the lower peninsula.
I’ve never had either of those. but the looked delicious.
So good!! I’m bring some of both home!
Love pasties and hope to visit the UP this September for our third time. Congrats on 10k.
Have fun! Thanks for joining us!
great video made me hungry for a patsy best wishes from ga
Hi there from near Grand Rapids Michigan! Love the UP and pasties. I have made them Jen and it was fairly easy. If you'd like the recipe, I'd be happy to share it with you.
Yes please!!🙏
Yeah, I tried but I'm UA-cam challenged I guess. 😂@@jennifermountaingirl
Do you go on Facebook? You could look up Rich and Jen’s adventures in message me the recipe if that would not be too much trouble.

Whilst in Negaunee, try a Tinos cudighi! They are the best!
We have already gotten home, but we are going back next summer so I will put that on my list! And thank you for the tip.
New to your channel. Great views enjoy your kitchen reviews. Keep it up. How about a Mac and Mac Cheese kitchen vlog.
Sounds like a great idea!!
We have pasties in Pennsylvania. If it was a coal miner thing it may be all they way down Appalachia where coal was mined. I know Pa is big on coal.
I ❤️ Pennsylvania!
@@jennifermountaingirl we love you back ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I like pasties with gravy because the inside can be kind of dry sometimes.
Really? That’s so weird! Thanks so
Much for watching!😊❤️ I’m doing gravy with the pasties I brought home!!😋
Have tou ever heard of a Runza native to Nebraska a German sandwich made with dough stuffed with cabbage and hamburger meat and onion cooked in oven for 20 min there are Runza restaurants in Nebraska that serve them very popular my Grandma made the dough by hand when i was a kid sliced the cabbage and onion homade is very good there is a runza casserole on line try it Nebraska is full of German immigrants cheese runza now and awiss mushroom runza
Wow! I have never heard of that, but I just looked it up and I am making that casserole!!
Let me know how it goes and if you like it ketchup goes well with it
It's a pot pie Meat lie Australia.. every one culture has something similar..yummy👍
That is so interesting- I didn’t know that!
Both things looked yummy. Loved the photos on the water and, of course, of the pups! What a beautiful place.
It was!we had a great trip!
I’ve seen these made on Acre Homestead. Her Mother-in-law helped her make some.
So like I said, my girlfriend and I like watching you two... If you're ever in the Pittsburgh area you guys can give us a call... My girlfriend would like to meet Rick and I would love to meet you... Maybe we can make it happen😊
Sounds like a plan if we are ever in the area!
Had pasties in Wales
I'm from Ohio too!
😊❤️
There was a restaurant in PCB Florida that was called Eat my Pasty. Unfortunately I haven’t made it there to date and don’t know if they are still open, but will visit next trip for sure if they are.
Have you ever tried a Runza?? I know they have them in Nebraska and Iowa, but not sure how many other Midwest locations.
I have never even heard of one! I will have to look that up!
Very nice! Beautiful and and the foid looks interesting! I'm an Ohio meat and tater too! 😊
😊❤️
🌸👍🏻🌸

Drove right thru your area 2 weeks ago. Beautiful area you live in
