the reason the wild dog was slow is that in the wild African wild dogs are marathon hunters which means the use stamina rather than speed and they can run for long distances.
Interesting video, just a brief musing on some of the speeds listed; the 45-60 mph claims for lions and tigers running are either largely myths are only for a brief few moments. From what I could find from scientific sources on lions the top speed generally agreed that lions/tigers can reach is 35 mph and for only short bursts, but they have near instant acceleration. The true top speed of cheetahs is apparently hotly debated, from as low as 45 mph to as high as 75 mph.
Agreed, I didn't research top speeds as much as I could have. Google isn't all that helpful! There's wide debate what the top speeds are and also the big cat's speeds aren't maintainable, they can only do short bursts.
Main thing with cheetahs is many claim they can reach speeds of upto 70 mph, but I believe this is only theorised. I wouldn't be surprised if they could run at 60 tho, or near to it. The issue is a cheetah or any animal for that matter will rarely use its "max" speed because... It doesn't need to. A cheetah running at absolute maximum will be at a risk of falling over and exerting more energy than one that is running at 50 for example, and most of the prey it chooses are slower and weaker members of a herd so it doesn't need to run that fast.
Is a interesting video, can tell by the animations that some of these animals were just trot speed.. Like the African wild dog. Those dogs definitely run faster than that but PZ has thier run as a fast trot
Completely agree. I really wanted to see if real-world matched in-game speeds, and I think it does for some of the animals but not all of them. Some of them just refused to run at top speed
Yeah I think some of them can and do run a lot faster when there's a need for it, but there isn't any need for running like that in Planet Zoo, so they don't.
@@amorareef7607 it's all debated, noone can really measure them and if they could there would be no way to tell if this is its absolute top speed or if its the same with all of the members of a species. Some are probably faster than others, same with humans
Just a note: strides don't matter in this game since Energy isn't a thing most likely the speed is just generated by some sort of Coding for how fast they run for certain things
Too bad planet zoo doesn't have sprinting animations for the animals, non of these animals even sprinted (which is where they get their top speeds). I believe the pace they now did was just a canter/gallop. I also subscribed!! I still enjoyed the video!!🥰🥰
the results are different because the animals have no reason to run at their top speed- they just run at a speed that is comfortable for them to get somewhere they want to go. They would only reach their full potential speed when either running from a predator or hunting prey
The issue with animal speeds is that we don't know what they're maximum is, as we can't tell them to run as fast as possible and time it. Animals like cheetahs may run very fast when hunting but even then, we can't know if that's the absolute highest they can go etc
Google told you something wrong, because Lions are faster then Tigers and the Pronghorn Antelope is the 2nd faster land animal. Tigers run at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Also like Lions, Jaguars can run at speeds of 50 miles per hour
If I had a dollar for every time a viewer pointed out that mistake, well I'd have about $300 now 😂 yeah, I was a doofus and mixed them up. Glad you enjoyed the rest though!
Yeah sorry about that I messed up with the pronghorns. To get the animals to run, you need to put their food bowls on the opposite end of the track, then keep boxing the animals up and placing them other end of the track. Eventually they'll feel inclined to visit the food bowl and always run towards it - soon as you see them going to 'run' box them back up and place them at the start line.
@@jerseyjack9114 Ah yes. Some can be a bit stubborn. The way to do it, put the enrichment stuff by the door, then once the animal is in the enclosure, move them to the other end (the starting line). If they decide to just sit down or wander about, you need to ramp the speed up, and basically just wait until they decide they want a drink of water or whatever. When you see them heading towards any kind of toy etc. then move them back over the starting line. That's when they Run Like Fun to get back to the item they wanted! Can take a bit of time. This video had a lot of editing to cut to the points when they actually started running.
Hi, I am almost 7 years old and i watched your video many times. And i have comments about it. The african wild dog should be twice the speed. And i like that the ostrich won. And i really like the bongo and it was special for it to go in second.
You have to set it up so that their feeders are the other end of the racetrack. If you pen them in at the start point, then get rid of whatever was penning them in, they'll generally run full-speed towards the feeding area! Doesn't work every time, but most of the time.
You stick something to entice them at one end of the run (so water, enrichment item), then place the animal at the opposite end. If they want the item, they'll run towards it
It was a amazing video but was very unrealistic cause the animals speeds are based on fear and a flight for survival shorten the distance by about half cause the herd can slow down about then cause the predator as caught his/her prey by then. It was enjoyable to watch and it was different than the norm.
Oh thanks! I don't think in-game speeds change based on predator behavious, just not sure they've built that into the game. Would be interesting to see if that changed the speeds...but I'm reluctant to make a video on animals getting hurt, I just can't do it. I think other people probably have videos on this sort of thing though
the reason the wild dog was slow is that in the wild African wild dogs are marathon hunters which means the use stamina rather than speed and they can run for long distances.
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

@@luksius_dk here come lion fans boi
The pronghorn is commonly considered the fastest because while they are slower they can last longer running.
It surprised my just how much they go when they do!
the cheetah only lost because cheetahs almost never run top speed in the wild and even rarely in zoo's
Yeah this is probably very true! The animals act way differently in the game than they would in the wild, they don't really have reason to run
And cheetahs run at 75 mph bit 61
Not*
Actullay I think gazelle should of won because there as fast as a teacher
Cheater

Frontier: That's physics.
Ostrich: Well yes, but actually n o
@Dylan Smith what?
Amazing video, so different to what else out there and I love it.
Thanks! I enjoy making videos of different aspects of the game too
omg i loved your commentary!! You had me laughing out loud!! love your content
Thank you so much! Happy you enjoyed this!
Plastic Swans you’re welcome!! maybe you could do a race between the fastest swimmers in planet zoo? Just a thought, keep it up ❤️
These animals are definitely slower than in the wild
True that
Probably beacuse they don't need to hunt unlike in the wild and for herbivores they don't need to run away from preditors.
@@Frogboyaidan lol the creator can program them to make run faster
Jimminy. Now I want a racetrack! As for the big cats--they're cats, of course they didn't go where you wanted, when you wanted.
So true :D
this is great, im binge watching ur videos rn, i only just found you!!! love it, its soo funny!!!!!!!!!
Oh wow thanks! Yeah I had a lot of fun making all the races!
The wild dog could go way faster than that, but when they run like that they're trying to save energy

@@PlasticSwans Exactly :)
3:46 I love how even he looks confused
Very nice video, but the Pronghorn and the Thompson’s Gazelle were the wrong way round
Umm.... Actually pronghorn antelopes can run 61 mph tigers run 40 mph and thomsons gazelle run 50 mph. facts:)
I took figures from a Google search, did mention that in the video ;)
@@PlasticSwans I also searched it and that's what I got.

This Is Really Cool ! Your Channel Is Amazing !
This is actually super interesting haha it was so excited to watch haha
turtle would’ve won if he just had his minute of fame
excellent vid
It's the moose in plant zoo
Fun video, and a nice change of pace for a planet zoo video.
I like planet zoo because you could test animal speed climbing and how fast they go underwater!
Just a note: strides don't matter in this game since Energy isn't a thing most likely the speed is just generated by some sort of Coding for how fast they run for certain things
I'm sure you're right!
You should do an updated version!
the dog is just jogging not sprinting
Too bad planet zoo doesn't have sprinting animations for the animals, non of these animals even sprinted (which is where they get their top speeds). I believe the pace they now did was just a canter/gallop.

I still enjoyed the video!!🥰🥰
Thanks! Yeah I'm working with what the game provides. They've still done an amazing job, even if the animals don't sprint!
@@PlasticSwans I totally agree!!

I need to test this...they 'run' to food, and I'm curious now if they run quicker if they're being chased, or chasing something

@@PlasticSwans I know
Are these animals upgraded at LS Customs? Or just stock? ;)
No upgrades, I just changed the colours to get the protestors off my case 😂
the pronghorn is actually the fastest animal in north america.
Good to know!
You should’ve done the common ostrich versus Bungo at the end
Hmm, now I just wonder what 'incentive' you could use to make them run faster...
;-)
My mind takes me to dangerous places on that one

Haha lol
Make a video of the fastest baby animal
Consider it on my 'to do' list!
The reason the wild dog didn't beat the gemsbok is because wild dogs more rely on stamina more than speed they rarely reach there top speed
Yeah I think it's the same with the lions. They can do short sprints but could never outrun the gemsbok for endurance
New discoveries suggest that a lion 🦁 can run for long periods without getting tired and slitly faster than 🐯
I love these videos!
You mixed up tompson hazel and prong horn that's kinda funny
Yeah I did! I get so many comments about it too, I'll never live that one down 😄
Wait you didn't put a springbok
Yeah, that was an oversight! Apologies.
Amazing video and how long is the perimeter of the glass wall from end to end because I would like to try it.
Track length is 320 meters (0.2 miles). The walls tell you how long they are before you place them, so it's quite easy to replicate
Thx I tried it bud the animals wouldn’t care about the enrichment shelter and food

We have armadillo races here (texas)
😂 that sounds hilarious!
I heard the whimper in the wild dog when he lost to the gemsbok
Also cheetahs run 75 mph
Their max speed is 100 KM/H
I Subedi on the first time I saw the channel bc I can see the content is very good
Well the BLUE wildebeest runs at 50 mph not the BLACK wildebeest.
Come on the African wild dog is trying to save energy
Cheetah: 75.70 mph. 130 km h / kph
Oh and the gemsbok i also like gemsboks a lot
The pronghorn is the one you put as Thomson's gazelle but it is the second fastest
Yeah I messed them up!
This is a game in real life the wild dog would max take 55 seconds to do this far the tiger would at max do 37 seconds but would do it 17
BTW cheetahs run 75mph(120kmph)

Pronghorns have tiny strides
They do but they're pretty fast too!
Dem strides
if you put a zebra at the end for the lion he would zoooooom
No Turbo the Turtle? :(

Look at those STRRIIIDDESESSS
How did you get them to all run immediately the whole way???
You have to set it up so that their feeders are the other end of the racetrack. If you pen them in at the start point, then get rid of whatever was penning them in, they'll generally run full-speed towards the feeding area! Doesn't work every time, but most of the time.
All of those are cantering, not full speed like irl.
Are those real animals
It's Planet Zoo game
You need to redo this adding in all the newer DLC animals
Agreed, there's so many more animals. It'll take a while to produce though considering how many there are!
How'd you get them to run?
You stick something to entice them at one end of the run (so water, enrichment item), then place the animal at the opposite end. If they want the item, they'll run towards it
African wild dogs probably have a chance cause they can be predators to any thing
cheetah will won because cheetah is my fav
Absolutely :D
the lion wouldve gotten about 8th place because the likn hesitated for abour 2 or 3 seconds
How do you doing animals run?
You put an animal at one end of an enclosure, put food, drink and entertainment at the other end, and eventually they'll run!
Also you can not race big cats for long distances
The cheetahs run 70 miles per hour not 61
Good for them 🙂
The cheetah is the most fast animal in the Earth, that race is cursed, or the Cheetah is lazy.
