Yahtzee perfectly displays the Dunning-Kruger effect by showing how he overestimates his understanding of the Dunning-Kruger Effect while apparently knowing very little about it. It's Dunning-Kruger-ception.
In one breath Yahtzee says that this is the kind of game you won't be great at on your first play through. With the next breath he berates Gabe for not being great in his first play through
After reading up on the Dunning-Kruger effect it seems to me that Yahtzee embodies it more than Gabriel does, especially after Yahtzee took controls from Gabe so it would "spare us from yelling at our screens" and proceeded to fail. Horribly.
Zero_Burn Yahtzee's just a tease. I'm the same way, and my friends and family have reached the point where they'll back-and-forth with me over absolutely nothing. I'm surprised Yahtzee didn't mention the ultimate challenge of completing the bonus heist with the cream suit, which is probably one of the biggest dick moves I've ever seen in any game. Other than that, this is a good game, and I always thought that the upgrades were quite well-balanced in such a way that it becomes apparent that effort was put in to making them just challenging enough to attain without being unreasonably frustrating. Some folks might disagree with this, but I actually feel like _Art of Theft_ might be Yahtzee's magnum opus, as he was just reaching the point where he knew enough about making games to put together something well designed and balanced.

Yahtzee, I would love for you to make a sequel to this game. It does have a few issues in hindsight, but it is very well-put-together, and a sequel with your current knowledge would be an amazing stealth game.
"Why do I always forget this Ego Review the most?" I asked myself. "Oh right. Cause Yahtzee is kind of an annoying dick in this one and it's not fun to watch." Shame really.
Wow, this game is seriously charming. I hardcore want to play this. This is the one game that Yahtzee's done that I was so excited from the first ten minutes I had to stop the video to play so I wouldn't spoil it for myself.
Yahtzee made this game but he unlocked those two loot rooms but didn't go inside either of them, Gabe let him know he didn't go inside, and he just ignores him saying "yeh I did". Come on Yahtzee x_x

I had this game as a kid, it was some shareware i got on a disc with a gaming mag, knowing you made it makes me excited to be honest, i really loved this game
Out of all these games you've made, this one is the most interesting. If you were to build upon these mechanics and improve some of the jank in a sequel, I'd be happy to buy it.
I have been fangirling over this all morning, the only time I had to stop an Ego Review so I could play the game myself. But I suck, and am already stuck, so thankfully I have the perfect video to help me figure out how I'm spazzing wrong.
I want to see a combined sequel to Trilby: The Art of Theft and the Chzo Mythos games as a mod for Deus Ex, or perhaps a Deus Ex-lie game for Game Maker. The Company would still want vengeance against Trilby, so what if they got their vengeance by dabbling in the occult? Trilby would have to go against the Company, the Order of the Blessed Agonies, and John DeFoe's wraith. I could see the Company acting as the equivalent of Majestic 12 from Deus Ex, and the Order would act as the equivalent of the Cabal from Blood. My ideal title for the hypothetical sequel is Chzo Irritated, but there may be better.
Is it just me or is Yahtzee been riding Gabe kinda hard? Like he pokes and prods Gave and then when Gabe actually has something to fight back with Yahtzee just tries to diffuse the situation as quickly as possible.
Gabe should check out the program XPadder. It let's you assign arrow keys to a controller, so when you use a controller, the game thinks u are using arrow keys and works perfectly even if the game didn't come with controller support. It probably would have been great for a game like this.
"Yes, credits credits credits, me me me, aren't I great... There's some people" "Should I save?" "Yeah yeah, just save... Who cares" Pessimistic Yahtzee is probably my favorite Yahtzee

I'd actually like to support younger you's choices concerning the wire cutting. Unregulated randomness in game mechanics is bad, but a little bit a randomness used appropriately is quite useful. In this case, having which wire is the alarm be random is great since it creates an option (given that there are multiple ways around most obstacles, particularly those that involve wires): do you rely on skill to avoid the cameras/lasers/etc., or take your chances and rely on luck to turn them off? However, it's a particularly good idea to have the wires be randomized only at the start of a new game, and not changing afterwards. I wouldn't like being able to just look up which wire to cut in a guide before ever even playing the game, but it's certainly fun to act the masterful cat burglar after you've discovered which wire is right. I'll allow that perhaps a more skill-focused mini-game like those "hacking" mini-games that appear in a lot of RPG element games might have been a better option since it does put pass-or-fail entirely in the player's hand, but I think that the first point alone (the one about using skill or luck) is solid enough that, at the very least, younger Yahtzee shouldn't feel ashamed for making that particular design choice.
I would really enjoy it if when you were caught up with all the go reviews, if you and gabe did the consuming shadow again when it comes to it in the timeline, because I really enjoyed watching you guys playing it, plus I'd like to hear more about the game, if there is anything else to talk about.
And before watching this video on an almost entirely family friendly SNES-styled game, I lost a night of sleep to watching his video on The Consuming Shadow.

The room at 1:15:00 reminds me of the Slig Barracks from Abe's Exoddus which had a section with needing to roll and crouch between cover to prevent being shot.
I'm so glad this video is here; I can't play this game because I have a mac and I couldn't find any other good videos so that I could see what happens!
I wonder, could you use Flit to go fast by flitting, then detaching from the wall and flitting again in quick succession? Or does wall-hugging and detaching take too much time for that to be viable?
Yahtzee, there was this BA in Eng. Lit. that described your writing in Consuming Shadow as "patently corny, derivative prose," I'm really interested in your retort if you can be arsed.
Another AoT? I would pay money for it. It totally holds up today (minus a few bits here and there). I played it quite a lot, unlocked everything (including the awesome secret ending for the ultimate challenge with lazy summer ). Not sure about procedural generation can be pulled off with stealth though, I've been fiddling with this thought for a while now. About luck in game design, we did learn much about it in later years. We went through the phase "luck in games is bad", then came FTL and suggested a little bit of coin tosses here and there can make the game interesting. The details are still fuzzy though. Definitely doesn't work in AoT wire puzzle but it works in consuming shadows, for example.
Yahtzee's games actually seem really good. I'm interested in playing this and the other game of his about saving the world from monsters (forgot what it's called).
Yahtzee, you mentioned a while ago about maybe doing a 'Let's Deconstruct' series...That sounds like a great idea, you should do that after The Ego Review's over. Your's lovingly, Tea x
Ooooh, a full game Let's Drown Out! Now that I'd definitely like to see: you might even be able to enjoy yourselves like in Normality and Operation Stealth without the bickering!
We weren't screaming at the screen dear yahtzee, we were praising the patience of gabe for not having punched you in your intolerant / intolerable face so many times already xD I honestly think gabe is a hero.
7-11 (really connivence stores in general) are really quite good in Japan, very numerous, clean, have respectful staff and are mostly open 24/7. The comment about the bread is quite true for the most part, very sweet and often quite chewy. In the small village that I spend a lot of time in the only two unobtainable food stuffs that make me homesick are good bread and cheese.
I'd quite like to see you play through the original witcher, it's interesting to see how old fashioned it seems compared to these modern games, even when it's not that old. There are about 15 npc character models but at least you don't find people talking to themselves like in Oblivion.
I assumed Yahtzee would have told Gabe why he was going through the last mission in the Lazy Sunday suit, or at least what you get for finishing it when he failed it. I'm kind of disappointed now.
Hey, could you guys do Dark souls 2 as your full game? to make it interesting, the special challenge would be to only use bows. That would be really cool!
Biggus Dickus iv played about 240 hours in 1 and 128ish in 2. system wise and graphics wise 2 is better. 1 had better story and level design but 2 is better mechanically IMO.
+xXxMartin96xXx I don't believe he's wrong, but he's not right. You either give a character plenty of story and personality so you become invested in them, or you give them nothing but the most brief flickers of something so people are intruiged and want to know more. For example ; The reason people love Garrett in the early thief games is because he had a charming wit to his personality, whilst on the other hand, people l are interested in G-man from Half Life 1 & 2 because we know nothing about him, and yet he's so prominent and seemingly important to the story and world around us.
I wonder if when talking about the trilby rank Yahtzee knew that Terry Cavanagh of VVVVVV and Super Hexagon fame had videos on his youtube channel of his Trilby rank playthroughs.
Art of Theft, man. I remember playing this after seeing Deceased Crab play it forever ago. Still a fun game, though yeah, Gunpoint is kinda it but better in every way. Also, you wanting a super long game that could surprise you automatically brings to mind Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga. But that's just me always recommending that to everyone.
I don't know if I should be pleasantly surprised at Yahtzee's restraint in not immediately drawing attention to his oh-so-clever "Chapow City" pun, or disappointed. I mean, this is an "Ego" review, after all.

"RIGHT AFTER THESE MESSAGES!" And as soon as Gabriel finishes, an ad starts....
19:11 DAMNIT YAHTZEE! YOU FUCKED IT UP!
20:15 AARRRRGHHH!
20:28 WHY DO YOU SUCK AT THIS GAME!
*continues to rage at screen ;)*
This game always reminds me of Gunpoint
The room at 1:15:00 reminds me of the Slig Barracks from Abe's Exoddus which had a section with needing to roll and crouch between cover to prevent being shot.
God damn that alarm. I keep thinking my phone is going off.
I'm so glad this video is here; I can't play this game because I have a mac and I couldn't find any other good videos so that I could see what happens!
Full-length LPs would be fantastic, go for it.
Also will Let's Deconstruct ever see the light of day?
No
@@theblackwidower Starting to think you might be right :c
Ohhhh I remember this game. I actually used to play this game. I used to enjoy it quite a lot!
Dear Yahtzee and Gabe. What would you two consider the most emotionally impactful game/games either of you have ever played?
After the ego review I think it'd still be fun to do a deconstruction of something like silent hill 2 or half life
I wonder, could you use Flit to go fast by flitting, then detaching from the wall and flitting again in quick succession? Or does wall-hugging and detaching take too much time for that to be viable?
Yahtzee, there was this BA in Eng. Lit. that described your writing in Consuming Shadow as "patently corny, derivative prose," I'm really interested in your retort if you can be arsed.
Will Ferrous
When you say "There was this BA".
Do you mean that you are that BA?
*****
no, its not me, i can link it to you if you want. I'm a B.A. in chemistry, so i cant really do much then to relay the message.
*****
he's not talking about the story. but the prose.
*****
Though i agree with your general sentiment, your post was nigh unreadable. Kinda ironic given the topic, lol.
***** why not?
This game is his best yet in my opinion. It's like Thief 2 mixed with Mark of the Ninja dipped in a vat of 50s charm.
I always thought shapow sounded like something that would appear when batman punched someone
@ 5:00
I assumed there was hat puns in this game! I knew it!
wow, even more content for consuming shadow, that sounds nice I'm still playing the current one.
Nathan Anglesea yeah. I get the feeling if I hung out with yahtzee he'd get a concussion before he could say... idk, something annoying?
you people know no sarcasm, do you?
7-11 (really connivence stores in general) are really quite good in Japan, very numerous, clean, have respectful staff and are mostly open 24/7.
The comment about the bread is quite true for the most part, very sweet and often quite chewy. In the small village that I spend a lot of time in the only two unobtainable food stuffs that make me homesick are good bread and cheese.
Yay more Trilby, Yazee, and Gabey videos!
I dont know if this ever comes up, but why is there a Sugar Rush skill when Trilby gets terrible headaches from drinking cola?
Cooper White - Maybe his abuse of sugary soda in his cat-burglar years is what leads to the headaches?
I really like the colors on the levels, they remind me of old Amiga games, like Lemmings 2 shadow level.
What's the unlock?
I would absolutely love to see Gabe and Yahtzee play The Witcher, seeing as it's one of my favourite games.
Hey, could you guys do Dark souls 2 as your full game?
to make it interesting, the special challenge would be to only use bows.
That would be really cool!
yeah, i'd like to see them drown out some souls.
CrusaderGundam Why 2? 2 was intensely worse than 1, so there'd just be more complaining.
Biggus Dickus iv played about 240 hours in 1 and 128ish in 2. system wise and graphics wise 2 is better.
1 had better story and level design but 2 is better mechanically IMO.
Are you still developing games involving Trilby today?
SirCatnip Sorta. Consuming Shadow has a person involved with a paranormal investigation group with the first initial "T"
SirCatnip He's in The Consuming Shadow as "The Ministry Man" so that sort of counts.
SirCatnip I think Trilby represents the person Yahtzee wishes he was, so in that sense, he'll never stop exploring that character.
***** if we know too much about a characters past they cease to be interesting.
Hooray! this is a long one :D
I remember playing this the year you released it.

So, you might say that..."it tickles"?
I don't know if I should be pleasantly surprised at Yahtzee's restraint in not immediately drawing attention to his oh-so-clever "Chapow City" pun, or disappointed. I mean, this is an "Ego" review, after all.
