I feel like people get too wrapped up in what this game is based on rather than what it is. This game has the some of best sonic controls, levels and level design in sonic history, and it shouldn't be overlooked just because of the level themes.
Additionally, using old themes was a new idea at the time. Especially because those themes were never seen in HD 3D or played from sidescrolling perspective, so they felt different.
Unleashed had better boost sonic controls, better boost sonic level design, any classic title beats classic sonics gameplay, and anything they replicate (Sonic V Shadow, Chaos, City Escape) is just better in its OG form
@@insertname7397 WHOAH. You did not just say Sonic and shadow was done better in adventure 2. And that chaos was done better in adventure. Mash the homing attack to win huh? Seems real engaging. Push forward and eventually get to chaos huh? Real engaging. Generations actually requires real skill and engagement, otherwise shadow is gonna beat you to a pulp and chaos is gonna drown you.
@@electricsoul3355 Skill and engagement? LOL. It's just a crappy level that's WAY easier to drown in. Pushing forward? What is the ENTIRETY of the Shadow fight in gens? You just "race" him to hit stupid purple meteors? Awful and unimaginative, at least SA2's excuse is how it's dated and an older game. No skill were required in either for gens and it's the opposite of fun to do the shadow fight
@@insertname7397 I personally think both fights (Shadow and chaos) are really fun, they just use a different and newer gameplay style. both old and new are fun and interesting in their own ways
Recommend checking out the 3DS version if you can find it cheap. All the levels, green hill excluded, and boss fights apart from metal sonic, shadow and silver are different (and obviously the time eater as well). It’s great, the homing attack for modern sonic is a lot better as well.
The reason you're having so much trouble with the boost controls is because unlike frontiers, the boost gameplay in this game is specifically designed to have you boosting at all times, with the challenge being maintaining that boost without hitting obstacles. Watch a glitchless speedrun to see what I mean. Unleashed has this same kind of gameplay except its levels are much more linear so the weird turning isn't really much of an issue most of the time, it mainly just comes down to quick reactions.
Hey, so to answer your question about the 1st boss fight, it is locked into classic sonic, but the perspective of the pre boss cut scene changes depending on which sonic you go in as
Generations wasn't my first sonic game but it was the first one I beat and the first one I fell in love with. Colors was also the only game represented in Generations that I played first, so Gens was my introduction to green hill, chemical plant, angel island, speed highway, city escape, ocean palace, crisis city, and rooftop run
This game was my first Sonic game, and also the first that I beat, and I still love the game to this day! It brought alot of memories to my little kid self, and me being a teen now, I still have that soft spot for it!
My first game was Secret Rings, however I was stuck on the homing attack tutorial for the longest time. Generations was the next Sonic game and introduced me to the other games
People seem to forget that it’s not multiverse related, it’s timeline related, classic sonic isn’t sonic from another dimension, he’s from another time, the places you visit are from the past
Holy shit the nostalgia I’m getting from watching this. I was 8 when the game came out, and I remembered watching Cobanermani456 playing it and using tons of mods for it. The music is still amazing.
6:40 Honestly I think I liked it because I had the NDS port one, which I think had lot of differences from the Wii one. Also I really like Reach For the Stars. ALSO also, there was a bonus section with the blueprints of the Eggman's robots, which I loved to try to redraw identically.
My first sonic games were generations and unleashed, eventually I played the adventure and classic games and thought the series was peak and didn’t understand why people didn’t really enjoy the series, but then I played the games after generations and realised what went wrong. I really enjoyed frontiers and hope for the best for whatever comes out next
31:12 not gonna lie this game was actually my first sonic experience ever never knew the characters or the stories until I played this game about 9 years ago
I would actually like to see him replay some of these levels as the entire point is to improve with each attempt. Even your second attempt will be leagues better than your first as you will know where everything is. Just look at how much he improved in Rooftop Run.
The more I forced myself to replay this overrated piece of trash, the less I understand the appeal it has. "Improve" what ? It's pathetically easy and short, and the ridiculous ranking system or the lazily placed Red Star Rings definetely don't incetivize the player in any way. Most of the "alternate paths" are completely useless and redundant, since they ALWAYS bottleneck to the same exact point, at the same time. When they do branch out, you get long, tedious, drawn out, awful sections you are never gonna replay again like the turtle path in Seaside Hill. Modern Rooftop Run is a pathetic joke compared to the original, despite its cheaply placed hazards.
Sonic Generations on the *3DS* was my first Sonic game. I was pretty surprised at how short it was in comparison to Mario games, but I remember thinking that the music was amazing! Listening to the music collection convinced me that I had to play other Sonic games
The first mainline sonic game I owned was the alternative version of unleashed which was on Wii and PS2, I enjoyed it a lot but then I saw the hd version and its differences which inspired me to check out the whole series. Aside from unwiished, I played advance 3 which was fine. But something I want them to make a collection for is the rush series.
As someone who has been replaying sonic generations for fun and sonic unleashed for actually trying to beat it since I was stuck as a kid Generations is always fun to revisit and to try cool tricks and Unleashed is just a bit more challenging but remember to strengthen your wearhog and collect all the medals you can to progress story Here's to me beating Sonic unleashed soon
Update: I am now past the ice wearhog level I was stuck forever as a child and have two whole new places to explore and it's really nice because this was my childhood and I had way more to discover and now I can use light dash shoes!!! I'm excited to beat this game

I’ll be completely honest, it was very stupid of him to make an opinion of a game, of an entirely different game, and it’s not like he had the memories to base the opinion off of, he played the game around 2 years ago, and the fact that he called the wisps entirely bad even though the wisps in sonic colors were way better than the one’s in generations, at that point he might as well have said “Metroid dreads parry attack was a stupid idea, because the game that came before it was bad which means that the gimmick in this game is bad” he’s a good, and funny guy, but sometimes he can be just straight up idiotic
@@Someguy6851 i think his opinion was more that that he didn't like them in colors, and he didn't like them in generations, making the wisps bad gimmicks in each game they're in
I really enjoyed watching this playthrough, this is my favorite game thanks in part to the massive mod support for it! If you are looking for good mods to play I'd highly recommend the Unleashed Project and 06 Project, it reworks the whole game to be all the best levels from both games!
I feel the same about Mario Sunshine. It was so fun as a kid. I remember always asking to go to Walmart to play the display, and then play at friends' houses. Playing it recently on the All-Stars collection was... rough. I would play Odyssey or Galaxy after quiting just to feel good controls again lol. I hope Heroes isn't that way.
Fun fact: originally sega was considering bringing back Jaleel white for classic Sonic’s role in generations but they scrapped the idea before they even contacted him
Also: there was supposed to be a 3rd Sonic voiced by Ryan Drummond, but due to the poor work conditions he was offered to work in that idea was also eventually scrapped
It feels so good watching someone enjoy Generations. Love this game. The modding community and the replayability are so good. Please download level mods cuz they are so well designed

Sonic generations WAS my first sonic game, and i didnt feel weird that it was an anniversary title, mostly i didnt understand. Eventually i grew to know alot more about sonic and it made sense to me.
Generations summary by most sonic fans: music=AMAZING (as always) Gameplay=AMAZING Story=nonexistent, BUT excusable since it’s sorta themed as such, could’ve done a lot cooler stuff though.
Y'know, the *other* platformer has been doing the whole "nonexistent story but great music and gameplay" thing for, like, 35 years, and it seems to be working out pretty well for Nintendo. But no, Sonic Team has to be different.
Music = MEH (most remixes are noticeably inferior to the original tracks, or downright worse) Gameplay= BIGGER MEH (Modern feels too heavy and clunky when platforming, the Air Dash is pathetic, Light Dash works only in certain sections. Stages are painfully short, easy, filled with invisible walls, and the "shortcuts" are so worthless since they bottleneck to the same path anyway) Story = Nonexistent and NOT excusable, because the characters are misrepresented, there are no stakes or reasons to be invested other than "muh nostalgia". Sonic and Tails are just insufferable as they are in Colors, and Classic Sonic being mute makes no sense.
@@NYKevin100 Y'know, wanting Sonic to be "other platformer" is the reason why the series has tanked so heavily in less than 5 years. But no, you gotta pretend Lost World was good, right ? Nintendo fanboy detected.

Unleashed has some really fun day stages but they're definitely a lot tougher than generations or colors as far as i can tell though there's a lot less 2D segments than both games (still got a bunch but, yknow, in moderation) The werehog of course is gonna be very dependent on the person and mindset going in, my best advice is to experiment with combos and to not go in expecting uh. fast paced gameplay If you do play unleashed your best bet is to play it on xbox series x/s, but if you cant do that just dont get the ps3 version cause the framerate is absolutely abysmal, and the wii and ps2 versions are entirely different games

Gameplay= BIGGER MEH (Modern feels too heavy and clunky when platforming, the Air Dash is pathetic, Light Dash works only in certain sections. Stages are painfully short, easy, filled with invisible walls, and the "shortcuts" are so worthless since they bottleneck to the same path anyway)
Story = Nonexistent and NOT excusable, because the characters are misrepresented, there are no stakes or reasons to be invested other than "muh nostalgia". Sonic and Tails are just insufferable as they are in Colors, and Classic Sonic being mute makes no sense.
