  • “Situated on the slopes of the Orakei Basin in central Auckland, the site-which lies at the end of nearly a half-kilometre of challenging driveway that winds around another 12 properties and sits on the steep slope of a volcanic crater-had every difficulty you could imagine but it is spectacular, sheltered and central,” says Architect Wendy Shacklock.
While the site threw every difficulty at her, Wendy says the project benefitted from a quite specific client brief in terms of functionality but complete openness in terms of form and materials. However, the client wanted to achieve a flat lawn with swimming pool sitting flush with the living areas of the house on what is almost a one-in-three slope beneath a cliff. There was to be a study, media room and three bedrooms, with the main bedroom being on a mezzanine.
Most importantly, it must look like a house, not an apartment building.
“After consultation with engineers a judicious level was struck for the main floor, cutting minimally into the cliff on the one hand and retaining and lifting the downhill boundary to create a level platform.
“Entry to the site is from the south-western corner, five metres below the main floor level. The garage is further cut in with internal access to the double-height entry stairwell. The resultant section follows the natural contours with minimal manipulation in the overall scale of the cliff.”

I love the cantilevered living-room. It takes a tremendous amount of foresight to capture the view it frames from above above the garage. Something that must be imagined above where human eyes naturally settle. Impressive.

Especially loved the comment about architects becoming involved in government positions to address urban sprawl and other issues! Architects could also be great resources in addressing the affordable housing crisis in so many cities so kudos for mentioning that in the video!

her comment made me cringe: sure some architects would have something to add to public and policy conversations but just as many would not. Her hubris would be a red flag for me.

I was quite impressed with their usage of concrete, the way it was finished it doesn't appear to be concrete but yet it's structurally very sound and it really fits the house very beautifully, it's amazing how you did it and all the detail you put into the house it just goes to show that you love your work, and that for you it's not a job, wonderful !!

That box of windows rotated and above as you pull into the garage, i think thats the kitchen and it looks great inside and out.
And it goes so well with the triangles. This home is one of my favorites on this channel

You hire an architect so they can build you a piece of artwork to live in. The angles are beautiful on this home. Something to be proud of....

You did an absolutely marvelous job, in designing a beautiful home for that family, it can't possibly be an easy job, seeing that no two people on the face of the planet have ever been alike, coming to the point where you can actually visualize from a brief, what someone wants in a home, this is one of the most personable and private things that is in a person's life, and to be able to express it visually in a beautiful comfortable and functional home for a family is a tremendous outcome, and has to be personably very satisfying and rewarding to you as an architect, to see the expression on your client's face when you first reveal the finished home to them, one can only imagine how that must feel, God bless you, and thank you for all you do for all your clients to enrich their lives !!

Some brilliant concepts for an awkward site, especially like the simplicity of the windows dropping down in the lounge to make the lounge area feel like an outside deck area.

I love this home, it’s warm and calm with a singular focus on maximising all the beauty around it. It doesn’t hide or distract you from the environment or make you feel awkward or out of place when you are in it. It’s beautiful really. I like what she said at the end and couldn’t agree more, despite me having designed my own home and having no background in architecture or construction.

Kitchens are overrated. Nobody ever cooking there at all. It is always like a museum. You gonna fry there 2-3 times meat and then you would need to order deep house/ducts cleaning. Each house should have a real kitchen on the back with easy access to the main dining area. Check any old houses older than 100 years. They always had back kitchen and back storage for a veggies/meat or for the freezers. Everything was cooking back there. Why did it change? Why are we building our houses like that? Why is nobody building normal kitchens on the back?
