Maximum Cut Width On My Homemade Sawmill - Band Sawmill Build #28

  • Pushing my homemade mobile band sawmill to the limits while slabbing a 65-70 cm diameter log. Managed to flip the log and drop it while winching it onto the trailer bed but everything worked out. I also ran the blade into a bullet that was hiding in the log and wrecked the blade. You can look up the pictures on / donndiy and don't forget to follow! I hope you enjoy the video, share, subscribe and all that good stuff. Cheers! Thanks for watching!

I completely agree with what you wrote at the end of the video.
Some people would have to live in the countries in which we live and then they might understand why we do things instead of buying them.
And just like you mentioned, doing such things gives an incredible fun and enormous pleasure!

Made in Poland, Sir I twisted wrenches for 25 years, worked wire line and have driven a truck ( 18 wheeler ). I have met many different people over the years, and can tell you my observation or opinion. A vast majority of the people (80% or more) don’t have the skill, knowledge, tools or common sense to make the things you or Donn make. BUT yet they insist on telling you and others how to do the job. Or what they would do different. Pay these people no attention, don’t take to heart what they say, just know that they probably don’t have a pot to piss in or a window to pitch it out of! Also they don’t have the sense to pour piss out of a boot with the instructions printed up side down on the heel!

Yeah, man. I sound like a pussy for saying that but it makes me sad (crying smiley face :D) when someone worships "store bought" items like these are for some reason something to strive for and in principle better than something that is homemade. But I try to understand, thus expect that my point of view is understood as well. But that's not always the case. And thus the half-rant in the end of the video. :D It's very cool you took the effort to comment on that. May you have many more awesome projects in the future, dude! Thanks for watching!

Making machinary is a good hobby and a lot of fun. A lot of the time it is a lot more durable and works better than the store manufactured rubbish that they try and unload on us these days. Most machinary I buy gets pulled to bits and modified to make it work better in some way or another.

I wish I could do something like that for just a day! But, I'm disabled and cannot stand for more than 15-20 minutes and that is pushing myself. You can look up the medical terms, but I know them by heart since I was an RN for over 2 decades. In my spine I have osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease and spinal stenosis. To cut down on the amount of narcotic pain relievers, I have a spinal cord stimulator implanted. I'm just telling you this so you can understand why I would love to see you work in person, with the wonderful smells of cut woods. That's why I love to watch these videos you guys make, to get my mind off of me and my pain. I try to work a little in my shop, but I sit more than I work. Great video from Estonia. May God bless you and your family.

Yep, excellent video. Super saw and good wood produced. I agree with your comments at the end. I've just "wasted time" building a super log splitter out of an old hay baler, and a powerful wood chunker/chomper out of a 7.5 tonne lorry axle. Now my firewood is done in a quarter of the time. You are an inspiration to a lot of people. Well done. Regards. Ian. (In Scotland)

Hell, I love in a small city where a lumber yard is much easier to get to but I’d much rather do this kind of thing myself. Everything you said at the end of the video is absolutely correct. People have become complacent about where raw materials come from and the reward of doing it yourself.

Your video was one that inspired me to build my own smaller band sawmill. It took mw a few tries but eventually I did it. I am no mechanic by any means. I am retired so have time do do this. I have already cut quite a few logs. It works quite well and I impressed myself for building it. it was just a project I wanted to do to prove to myself that it can be done. YES!

I’ve recently stumbled across your videos and am actually building a sawmill myself. It’s a long and tedious process and I hope it actually works. Only steps left to do are mounting the back side dogs (not even sure if this is correct vocabulary) and the safety cover for the blade itself. Almost there 👍🏼

Donny, you rock man. Sometime naysayers are right, and sometimes they aren't. As many here probably see it, you are killing 3 or 4 birds with one stone. 1. People say you idea is crazy, and you prove them wrong. 2. You like building stuff, and you did. 3. You are potentially able to be your own boss, setting your own hours, and making equal or more than average while being outside and not micromanaged. 4. Once you're known more, you can go around and mill people lumber on their own properties and not only get paid, but probably pick up some off-cuts that are valuable for your own shop or sell. 5. You can look anyone in the eye and prove to them that you're a self-made man.

Great lumber great mill and great video! I built my bandsaw mill about 4 years ago and I love having my own mill and I really enjoy milling my own lumber. I have also heard a few negative comments about building it from UA-cam trolls over the years, the funny thing is if you look at the trolls UA-cam page all of the troll people never have any videos that they have made, so I usually call them out and tell them, instead of being a jerk and being negative, they should put some time into learning how to build things and try to add some videos worthwhile to the UA-cam community rather then being a troll, they seem to never comment back. It seems to be the best way to shut them down. Any how keep up the good work! Ps I have a two part videos of how I built a power feed for my mill, I really recommend building one, it completely transformed my mill. Take care and hello from Washington state!

My grandfather and his brother bought 35 acres back in 1940s to harvest the lumber for new barn. Plus a small sawmill. The barn is still with me and isn't going anyplace soon as it's still solid. My dad had a pole barn built in 1972 and it almost fell down due to rotting lumber. I saved it by installing new posts on one side. It's not a small barn. 90' x 36' x 16'' clear height. Oh was the lumber for those new posts expensive. I live near the center of USA. We have lots of good oak, walnut and hickory around here.

Hi Donn , I have just started the other day a re-run of your episodes from day one and I am up to episode 28 . Donn , I say don't worry about the doubters , you just keep doing what you do and what you like to do mate . If you have the gear and the know how to do it go ahead mate and besides you give me something to watch when I'm bored , keep it up Donn.

Nice looking strong built mill. I watched to see how straight it would cut and I was pretty impressed. Good job. I have been to Estonia a few times. It is a cool place with a lot of old beautiful buildings.

What an amazing piece of gear you made!
And it is always worth remembering that every 1$ spared is worth 2$ not had to be earned, at least. First you dont pay taxes on it when you earn it, you dont pay taxes on it when spending, and you dont have to pay for someone else's profit, taxes, and overhead.

Excellent! Glad to see at the end that you added a sawdust collector as that is a saleable commodity too. Here in the UK, for example, pet stores sell bags of sawdust. But you would have to fine-filter it first (and perhaps dry it out too) to avoid pets being injured by splinters or sharp bark

Keep it up, much like you, I continually catch grief for me keeping old trucks running and building cool stuff I can't afford to buy. There is something about being able to say, "yeah, I built that" or "when I found that it wasn't running and was missing a transmission and rear end" that puts a smile one your face when the whiners walk away. I caught continual grief when last Summer I took my family across the US through the Southwest desert in July in a 23 year old Diesel Suburban. Even a mechanic buddy of mine thought I was crazy. The power steering pump went out in AZ and 2 hours in the parking lot of an advance auto later, we drove it almost non stop back to the east coast without so much as a hiccup. I can't think there would be any mellinial wimp that has to have a new car every year would ever dare to think about doing that, the funny thing is it was fun as h**l doing it.

      Southron Jr,
It sounds like you have a 95 Chevy Suburban. Be damn proud! You own a real truck!
That era of Chevy trucks where still made for the consumer to keep on the road. Now they want vehicles to only last about ten years. I hope you can keep it on the road another twenty eight years. Good luck.

@@nickd5943 It would seem you know about the Detroit Diesel powered 6.5 TD K2500 Suburbans. Yes, it is a '95, curious how you guessed the year since GM made diesel powered burbans from the 70's all the way up to '02. I also have a 92 K1500 with the gas powered venerable 350 with a NV45OO transmission along with a 1986 M1009 CUCV, i.e. the Military version of the K5 blazer with the NA 6.2 Detroit Diesel and "heavy duty half ton" running gear. Turbo 350 mated to a NP208 feeding a GM10 bolt and a Dana 44 axles with 3.08 gears, oh and the rear has a Detroit locker and the front has a Lincoln locker in it. All good old American iron but most importantly, made before the advent of needing a Masters IT degree to be a mechanic. The CUCV only ever came with 1 circuit board in it and that was the glow plug controller, after it died on me I used an old ford starter solenoid to activate the glow plugs off an aftermarket push button starter switch making it so there isn't a single circuit board or computer chip in it.
