- For many, one of the highlights of a Walt Disney film was the opening song by Jiminy Cricket. Cliff Edwards sings this song beautifully. His high tenor falsetto was very appealing.
I was surprised by the enormous outpouring of affection for this song. It means a lot to a lot of people.
Those of us lucky enough to grow up with this song, know how powerful this song is. One of the highlights of watching any Disney toon or film, or special, was always catching this melody/song, whether at the start of the broadcast, or as the broadcast closed out. I, for one, find this song calming, inspiring, and so much more!
I can remember as a kid thinking how great a voice Jiminy had.
My daughter and I danced to this song on her wedding day. Precious memory. Thank you so much for posting this. Kindest regards
That sounds beautiful, my father passed away three years ago and I'm unmarried, but I wish I could dance with him at my wedding. But I'm happy your daughter had such a beautiful memory. This song is kind of like a hymn. It inspires , love, hope, and, joy
Cliff Edwards was why my father played the Ukulele and played it and sang sons to my mother. They were married for over 60 years. He passed away at 82 and she passed at 90. He played the Ukulele and she would play the piano. Thank you for posting this.
Brings a tear everytime best song from childhood
@@dougberry4819????
@@dougberry4819 Seems like you have poop where your heart should be
I'm glad I'm not the only old fart listening to this and enjoying it.
Thank you Walt Disney for a wonderful childhood ! :)
I can close my eyes and be back with my family as a little girl watching Walt Disney on Sunday's
how old are you??
really old....
+Alison Siegfried exactly how I feel
Me too, as a little girl I used watch Disneyland with my family and enjoyed it every week so this song makes me bring tears in my eyes with joy everytime I listen to it. I love it sooooo much.
Me too. I didn't make it to Disneyland until I was a grown woman. I loved watching the Disney show with Tinkerbell flying around with her wand, and the colors!! I get verklimpt when I hear this song too. I was hoping to see the original singer.
his voice is eloquent, moving and beautiful - he puts so much emotion into such a simple performance - what a special musical talent
This was the first movie I can remember my parents taking me to in the small town where I grew up. It was in the dead of winter. And daddy's car had to go over a steep hill full of ice, snow and mudslides. But it was the best way to go to town from our farm. I've since dabbled in and out of moviemaking myself.
So high fiddle dee dee. An actor's life for me. Cheers!
Thank you for the beautiful memories 😊
best disney song of all time
My favorite song in the universe. Hard to find this on the internet.
Thanks ever so much!
Thank you very much. It is an excellent version, I agree. I never imagined so many people would like it....I thought maybe a couple of hundred, and over 24 thousand have viewed it! That really makes me happy, because I remember when I was a kid how that was often the part of a Disney movie that I like the best.
I have loved this beautiful song sung by this man's unique voice ever since I was a very young child. It still brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it now, and I am now 64. It is simply one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It is so sad that Cliff Edwards died penniless, an alcoholic and a drug addict. But he will never be forgotten thanks to When You Wish Upon A Star.
This always makes me cry.The very best Disney songs have that ache that can make you happy and sad in the same moment. This song though, is made of that ache. Just phenomenal stuff
kshitij srivastava it’s called nostalgia
Or those sad songs like in Dumbo - which makes me bawl my eyes out ever since having my own kids.
Disney needs to make a film with 60's - 80's animation and audio. Plus it needs these types of songs oh my god please
+Erin Clive These films were a product of their time so embrace them and never forget
The '70s and '80s were dark decades for Disney.
And here we are , with even darker times with Bolsheviks trying to take our wonderful freedoms.
More like 30s-60s lol
@@muffdingo you’re right, I was quite young when making this comment
What a sweet voice. This makes me cry, and makes me cry when I see my kids hear it for the first time.
Simple the best song EVER made
It certainly is a winner, isn't it!!
No.
+Edmund StAustell yep

Yes, it goes right to the heart, doesn't it? So many memories, and such lovely singing.
Anyway, folks; as a guy who loved Disnney that much a long time ago he did wrote about the life of Walt Disney at school, I falled so much in love with this melody I decided it into my future funeral! That was a long time ago. But still it is my special favourite!
The magical combination of great Disney songwriting, and choice of Cliff Edwards for both Jiminy's speaking voice and the songs with his unique falsetto, for once without his signature vaudeville comic delivery, adding a very poignant melancholy undertone given his turbulent life. They even cast him as "Uncle Cliff" on the Mickey Mouse Club early 50's TV series as a way to help out.

I love this piece the best. So clean, pure and magical at the same time. Perfect.
COOL!!!!
There is an ethereal quality to his voice, that sparks new life into your veins. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, a remarkably clear an beautiful falsetto voice, just lovely to listen to.
One of the most beautiful songs ever
This song brings back some wonderful memories!
The most wonderful Disney song ever and Cliff just sings this so beautiful!
Excellent song, very talented man. Soothing voice.
One of my favorite songs!
So sweet!
What a Song... Tributes to the composers: Leigh Harline (music) & Ned Washington (words) 1940 - and what... a... voice. Brings back beautiful memories ev'rytime I listen to it. Goosebumps and tears.
Many versions to follow, But Cliff Edward's has never been equaled - for my tastes, anyway. Thanks for posting
Touches my heart.
My dad took me to see Pinnochio at the theater when I was a youngster and I heard Jiminy Cricket sing this song and I have loved this song ever since. It brings back fond memories of childhood days. Thank you so much for being able to listen to it again and thanks for You Tube for being the vehicle to presenting it.
The words to this song were written by Ned Washington, who received a Oscar for it, I was bless to hold that Oscar in my hand in the home of his Daughter Karen Hinen.
Love it, Love it, LOVE IT!!! This is the song Brenda and I walked down the isle after saying, "I Do".

Aww, that's so cute! How long have you been married?
How wonderful.I hope you are happy together.
I have to say it. This is wayyy better then let it go!
bazla123
The most classic song in Disney
Is when u wish upon a star
bazla123 I agree the movies and songs that the Walt Disney company made in the year 1937-2000 are better than the movies that the Walt Disney company makes now
@@legendherograndvideos1043 Greatly due to quality standards that Disney held to, until at least the last decade or so..... I strongly doubt that Walt, or Roy would allow their business and legacy, let alone their family name become so P.C., nor do I believe they would stand for much of the business practices that Disney has allowed, or committed over the last 10+ years. Walt took some risks, but he had high quality standards, many which he would not alter, even if it cost him or his company social/political standing. I think Walt would have gutted the managing groups and likely placed a price cap on much or most of the ticket and other prices that are forced on most who want to visit the parks currently. I strongly doubt Walt Disney would allow many of the films that have been labeled or allowed to claim association with the Disney brand, to do so, if he'd have been around today...... I wonder why his daughters and their grandkids sold their legacy out, so easily
nahhhhhhhhh disagree let it go slaps
You can’t love something without knocking something that other people love?
The tone, the high notes are simply beautiful.
Loved this song when I was little & I still love it now.....
Such a beautiful song and singer.........
The theme for Disney, so magical.
Such a beautiful voice. RIP
Thank you!
Beautiful song.
Came to UA-cam because a contestant on American idol just sang this song. I love Cliff's voice so much! Goosebumps!
I think this may be the best Cliff Edwards version of ' When You Wish Upon a Star' that I have heard. What a talent, what clarity and pureness in both diction and tone! It's the type of recording that you can listen to over and over without ever tiring of hearing it! What a great legacy from such a supreme classic entertainment artist !
such a good song! timeless
the sheer feelings from this song.....
Sweet and tender memories come to me...oh boy! those where more happy days for all us...my best regards to you my dear maestro, thanks for sharing this divine song. All the best in this new year 2016!!!
I suppose Uptown Funk may have a nostalgia value 50 years from now. But the comments won't match those that you read here. There's a quality in Cliff Edwards' delivery that will never be repeated. A gentler time when folk were, by and large, kinder and more thoughtful. A vital piece of social history, beautifully produced
Of course they won't match, you're comparing two different songs. One is a song with deep lyrics while the other is a catchy tune to dance to.
epicrobert24 What happened to "Fate steps in and sees you through?"
Such a sweet voice :')
Love this song. Thanks for the memories. :)
This was one of the few 78s we had that played on our radiogram! What memories of happier times.
This song is pure optimism. It got Neil to the Moon.
Debuted in Pinocchio it was a magical moment that swept everyone away. I will never forget where I was when that happened.
There's something about that audio quality from the 40s-60s that just makes the song special
Such a tender voice, very appealing to children.Hearing it agin a lways brings back fond memories.
swedish christmas memories... * sheds a tear *
just bought the disney cd for christmas with all the disney songs on them and this one is still the best by far
My mother read me the book in 1949👦
I saw the movie in 1955.
The emotion it brings to a 75 year old man is beyond my ability to put into words. You tube has been
Such a joy as I find things I never expected to see sgain👍🌸
Thanks Mom
Nobody sings like this anymore. The vocal harmonies are beautiful (especially near the end of the song).
This song made me believe in hope. It's absolutely beautiful.
This song make me soooo happy ❤❤
One song that brings back the good old day. Brings so much happiness! Love it
One of my all-time favorite songs. "Fate is kind......" Such a pretty melody.
On my grandson's 5th birthday in 2009, we surprised him with a trip to Disney World.... as we stood that night looking at the castle… across the sky ( on a wire ) flew Jiminy Cricket with that beautiful song playing , the boy turned back to me and said "Grammy this is the best birthday EVER". I almost cried he was so sincere and sweet. I want to take the now teenaged grandson back this Fall. Wishing on a star right now!
One of my most favortie songs of all time, sung the way it should. Brings back joyous memories of days long past, and hope for the days to come.
The best song ever
Thank you; many feel that way!
The By gone Era movie songs, have that Ingenuity & Romance that makes you feel like a child again.
I remember this song fondly, while as a young child hearing it over the radio whilst being washed in a tub in front of the fire on Saturday nights.
A tearful reminder of times and people long long gone…..
I love this song so much! When all hope is lost, simply wish upon a star!♡
Thanks to UA-cam, these memories are preserved.

Thank you, my friend. I love this thing, and apparently a lot of others do too. It was often my favorite part of a Disney movie when I was a kid:-)
Truly one of the greatest American singer/ songwriters of this century.
This song is 68 years old as of 2018 , its just timeless master piece, what a voice.
I wanna go to Disneyland now lol
So do I and at some point in the future I will go to Disneyland.
Cliff Edwards has my heart
Such a beautiful memory
What a nice memories this brings back. My favorite.
The voice caster for Jiminy Cricket was extremely competent. Right into American iconic status.
JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES.............AND BE BACK IN CHILDHOOD
What a range he has! I'll never forget hearing this song when Walt Disney came on the TV.
Comments of years ago😊. Here's one for the 'now'... 2021. in our masked world. Hoping for the 'shooting' stars this evening, I will surely see one and remember my lovely mum and her hear her voice again... Singing.Cliff Edward's words". When you wish upon a star ".. . I grew up in England.🇬🇧.. Even though I live here 🇨🇭 My heart will always be in London... ♥️
This song is so amazing, it makes me feel something inside that a really can't explain, so many memories, nostalgia... No other song can bring me so much memories and happy moments from my childhood, one of the best songs Disney ever produced, truely a masterpiece.
One of the worlds greatest songs!
Awwh, this song reminds me of ma greatest childhood memories. :-) he has a beautiful voice.
Every kid living in Australia, during the years I was one, at 6.30pm on a Sunday night waited in front of the television. We sat smelling of Palmolive soap, in pyjamas, dressing gowns, and slippers. Our legs crossed, our arms crossed, and with elbows resting upon our knees, we waited in front of the television for this magical song.
Poor old Cliff. I suspect a very unhappy life here. He had the most beautiful voice but I bet he didn;t know it. RIP old man.
Ukelele Ike!~
Peter Taylor 😥😥😥😥
He should have contacted Richard Percy Jones for help
I never thought to type in WHO DOES THE VOICE FOR JIMINY CRICKET and as soon as I heard this voice, I knew who it was. Oh. My. Lord. The original singer when I come to see this just minutes ago. Totally moved me to hear this again. MAGICAL!!
Pure magic! Cliff Edwards had the voice of an angel; Lord bless him! :)
I cry whenever I hear this song, it's too beautiful.
It’s wild to think, my grandpa would have only been 4 years old when this song was recorded. And he’s 87.
This is just the sweetest thing. Thanks so much for bringing a tear to my eye and making me smile all at the same time. :)
More years ago than just a few
A spark taught me as we both grew
That like a bolt out of the blue
Dreams really do come true...
-- Been living this magical way ever since
