I ended up with the flu decided to watch all the Star Trek movies in order. I was always a fan not a mega fan but definitely a fan and more of a fan of Star Trek then I was Star Wars. Watching the Star Trek Movie series I realize how wonderful and enjoyable intelligent and BEAUTIFUL it truly is. There is something truly to be said about grown-ass adults doing grown-ass adult things having grown-ass adult emotions in the movies we don't make movies like this no more. The true bond between teammates, the true bond between friends intellect as something wonderful to have. The adventures in life is life it's self. 🌟 A team that had one concept in mind to seek knowledge, from the cradle to the grave. 🌟
There are some moments that can never be the same. "No, I am your father" in Empire Strikes Back was one. But the first, long, loving shot of the refitted Enterprise was another. 10 years after the end of the third season, it was overwhelming. The movie could have ended right there and it would have been good. The Enterprise was the star of that film.
Persis has to be without a doubt one of the most beautiful women, if not the most beautiful woman, in all of Star Trek and there are a lot of them. She had a beautiful smile.
The giant model of the Enterprise was the one I think the blew up in the third film . Yes , back then they made models and then used CGI over them instead of totally all CGI which doesn't have the same effect when looking at it .
@@speedracer1945 I believe they used the same model for I - VI. They made a battle damaged one for II and III and blew that up. Part of the saucer section disintegration was achieved by pouring acetone on it and filming at a slow speed, which would look faster projected at 24 fps, and hand animating the flames around it. The original model was repurposed as Enterprise A with a fresh paint job. It was a brilliant work of art, indeed!
Found this on IMDB: The rec-deck briefing was filmed to finally show the entire crew complement of the Enterprise, something that had always been impossible during the television series due to the low budget. All of the extras in the rec-deck briefing sequence were Star Trek fans called upon to appear in the film. Most of their checks were not cashed; Harve Bennett said that they were probably framed as souvenirs by the fans.

I love the Making Of features that were produced at the time the movie was made. Retrospectives are great, but the original Making Of features always have the charm of that time. You're getting a true look behind the scenes.
Amazingly, I just bumped into this gem for the first time. With something approaching religious reverence I hit play, but quickly tempered my over-the-moon expectations, consigned to the fact that it would probably be quite dull. HOLY HORTA... this all-too-brief docu managed to touch on just about _every_ geeky aspect of STTMP's production that a lifelong fan of the film could ever ask for!
I read that several well known actresses who auditioned for that part dropped out when they found out they had to have their head shaved. And yes, Persis IS very beautiful, a natural beauty at that.
Yeah. I actually first found out in a grocery line staring at different magazines and there was Persis on a trash tabloid explaining how she was murdered. I figured that was not true and found out later it was a heart attack. She was a Beauty!

Seriously, most old effect look like crap (granted there are great exceptions) so don't be so quick to praise anything no CGI as great. There is good CGI as well as bad just like in the past where there was crap and good. What most people don't seem to realize is that good CGI doesn't get noticed precisely because it's so convincing you think it's real.

It's a shame the Director's Cut of this movie was only made for DVD resolution, it's actually a better movie with the remastered effects and tighter editing. Apparently it would cost too much to redo the Directors Cut in HD and 4K, especially since the effects company didn't keep any back ups of the mostly CG effects used in the remastered movie. D'oh!!
The special effects were also made at DVD resolution (720 X 480 for SD but the pixels for the actual film image are less than that because of the black widescreen matting). Nobody was even thinking of hi-def home video coming in less than a decade when the director's cut of ST:TMP was made! Very rarely does CG done at SD resolution scale up well for HD. Paramount wisely made the choice to redo the SFX for ST:TNG for Blu ray but they did it because they were fairly confident TNG would pay for the HD remaster and redone effects in Blu ray and HD broadcast sales. They were right but they haven't done this for the later series because they don't have the confidence that the fan audience really would support DS9 and Voyager remasters. They're just not as popular as the first two Trek series whether fans want to admit that or not. Paramount was very tight-fisted with the budgets of most of the Star Trek features prior to JJ. Even with inflation adjustments, none of the first 10 features had the budgets JJ's were given. The out-of-control budget on the first film and the behind-the-scenes power struggles between the producers, director, and actors scared Paramount. Whether you believe Paramount used this to "punish" Roddenberry the fact is he was demoted to Exec Consultant from Trek II onward because there was no confidence he could handle a big feature film after that fiasco. And it was a fiasco... None of the later films in the TOS series prior to the JJ-reboot had more than half the budget of ST:TMP but it must be pointed Paramount also charged all the development costs of Star Trek: Phase II and probably the aborted Trek feature scripts into the budget of Trek:TMP so it might have inflated a bit but it was still at least a $35million (roughly $133,000,000 in today's dollars) even without the P2 costs and that was huge money for ANY film back then! To recreate those effects is more costly than you'd think. They probably don't have the work sheets and the software used to create them is long obsolete so there's also that. It's very often the case that old CG sequences become so obsolete that even if the data is saved on discs (like Pixar does with their movies) they're incompatible with new programs and even if you DID convert the old models to new programs the chances are they would be messed up. You would literally have to have use the SAME software and the SAME computers used to create that work in the first place for it to be "perfect" and I'm sure settings would have to be retweaked for HD; they didn't do the effects in HD in the first place because that would have required a lot more computer rendering time and cost more money which no one wanted to pay. Even consideing redoing the effects with the "existing assets" just won't work when the SFX company that created those sequences doesn't even exist anymore and their computers were sold to other companies! The work would have to be recreated virtually from scratch, and, in all honesty, the old traditional model work looked better than any of the CG sequences they added. Some of it looked like Flash animation (a scene with the warp nacelles in the background beyond the rec deck looks particularly bad) and the compositing in the new sequences was bad -- not that the original version lacked its own issues. The compositing of the Klingon models during the V'Ger is very bad in spots and they get "rimmed" by blue "light" leak from the bluescreen effect. That happened with the Enterprise in drydock (particularly near the shuttlebay) but the compositing there is nowhere near as rough as the Klingon attack sequence in spots. I've seen all the edits of ST:TMP released on home video. Nothing added or trimmed made that film more enjoyable to me. The music and special effects are excellent but that's about it! The film is very flawed and the stiffness of the acting, the slow pace (even by 1970s standards -- it's easier to sit through The Godfather and that's nearly an hour longer than ST:TMP!), and very cold feel of that film can't be denied. It's very un-Star Trek and more like someone's attempt to emulate 2001 which is not how a Star Trek film should be done IMHO and the humble opinions of many long-time fans.
AvengerII Nice facts about the costs of the film and all but to compare the Godfather to STTMP in pacing was off . Least in the Godfather it was used to develop characters not five minutes flying around a Starship. They rushed this film without proper editing around a story that ended with a giant sexual orgasm that saved the planet .
chindleymuffin actually all the CG elements were saved and ready for Blu-Ray upgrades. All that was needed was the green light from Paramount according to Director’s Edition VFX Supervisor Daren Dochterman & DE Producer David C. Fein. Now that it’s been updated utilizing the original VFX elements and the updated CGI elements now recombined in 4K resolution, it looks and sounds better than ever.
Loads of problems in this 1st movie that were of course not mentioned here especially with production and the story that originally would be a lot different involving time travel etc which they got to go into later on,the movie had amazing effects but had less focus on characters like ST was known for,still it was a special movie and i liked it a lot when i saw it in the theaters as a Kid they made an amazing Enterprize model and many other practical models and effects i just have to mention,Persis was really gorgeous with or without hair.

This documentary is AWESOME!!! But it could use a remasteization, in mi humble opinion. Besides, poor Persis!! The hair cut secuency reminds me of "V For Vendetta". And poorer Presis, she perished, but I thpugh it had benn not much later and from a car accident; reading these comments, I learn it was from herat attack.
I remember being so hyped to go see this film but walked out disappointed after seeing it . I did enjoy seeing my favorite characters on the big screen and the Enterprise is its wonderful glory finally as it should look after years of those terrible matted reused shots on the TV show back then . Robert Wise got a bad rap though he is a good director if you ever seen the submarine film , Run Silent , Run Deep with Gable and Lancaster. If you haven't check it out . Doug Trumbull did some great effects for this film but it was rushed too fast and wasn't edited right but the story wasn't what Trek was really about not effects but the characters . Roddenberry also didn't have any control over the film since he sold it to Paramount and now CBS is screwing with it now.
She had heart disease and if you'll note in the video, she did smoke, too. It's unfortunate but some lifestyle choices probably contributed to her early death.

The original shooting script had a space battle at the end. The Klingon ships from the beginning were to emerge along with the Enterprise after the "birth/evolution" of V'ger.
I guess it makes sense why they spent scenes with the crew just looking at the ship. I didn’t realize how much effort they put into the ship. Still a boring ass film but great documentary
two years after industry changing experience thanks to George Lucas, you got served two hours long screensaver later used for windows 95... you know, starfield... of course, named Star Trek TMP for better selling... just saying
There was a flirtation with bald women models at the time, Which is why after that painful "cut", you see her dressed in a full ensemble that matches the style of the day - not only does it make her feel better about it, but she wears it perfectly, and seems to be enjoying it. I read a commentary on her part about it once, can't find it, but she was somewhat regretfully willing to do whatever to be in a mainstream Hollywood movie, and the lengths she had to go through were a daily struggle. But, the crew were very supportive, and (someone?) went as far as to put on a full "model treatment", just so she could see how well she could channel that style, and it brought up her spirits enough to complete the film, and she actually did some modeling shoots while still bald. I read about this 15, 20 years ago. Don't know where or how much was true but some of this footage says maybe it was? Anyone else ever read that?

There is a story of Walter koenig walking by Persis and he would stroke her bald head and say her name in a cat like manner.

Masako Natsume who played Tripitaka in Monkey and had her head shaved bald for the role in 1979 died from acute leukemia at the age of 27 in 1985.

I remember being so hyped to go see this film but walked out disappointed after seeing it . I did enjoy seeing my favorite characters on the big screen and the Enterprise is its wonderful glory finally as it should look after years of those terrible matted reused shots on the TV show back then . Robert Wise got a bad rap though he is a good director if you ever seen the submarine film , Run Silent , Run Deep with Gable and Lancaster. If you haven't check it out . Doug Trumbull did some great effects for this film but it was rushed too fast and wasn't edited right but the story wasn't what Trek was really about not effects but the characters . Roddenberry also didn't have any control over the film since he sold it to Paramount and now CBS is screwing with it now.

There may have been alternative scenes. They tried some stuff and then decide to what we can see in film.

The original shooting script had a space battle at the end. The Klingon ships from the beginning were to emerge along with the Enterprise after the "birth/evolution" of V'ger.

Would have been able to tell on the big screen. It was OK, she seemed to realize she looked beautiful bald. Look at that smile at 8:10
They tried one but she said it looked stupid. It was her suggestion that she do it for real and have it cut off.
There was a flirtation with bald women models at the time, Which is why after that painful "cut", you see her dressed in a full ensemble that matches the style of the day - not only does it make her feel better about it, but she wears it perfectly, and seems to be enjoying it. I read a commentary on her part about it once, can't find it, but she was somewhat regretfully willing to do whatever to be in a mainstream Hollywood movie, and the lengths she had to go through were a daily struggle. But, the crew were very supportive, and (someone?) went as far as to put on a full "model treatment", just so she could see how well she could channel that style, and it brought up her spirits enough to complete the film, and she actually did some modeling shoots while still bald. I read about this 15, 20 years ago. Don't know where or how much was true but some of this footage says maybe it was? Anyone else ever read that?
