    I always enjoy when you get excited (usually after a bad roll) and you temporarily turn into Don Knotts.

    Thank you Rahdo! As someone who plays almost exclusively with my wife, I appreciate your and Jen's reviews, particularly with your focus on whether the game is good with 2 players, and towards limiting take that mechanics. If ever I'm on the fence, I can count on you to offer me the deciding perspective on a game. Keep up the great work!

    I think a lot of us share your "care bear" approach to games, so it's very helpful to us to hear how that aspect of a game affects your opinion of it. I have the same fear about this game. I wonder if it's possible to make a non-aggressive variant. At least it's potentially winnable to ignore the military and still do well. I'm very intrigued by the premise of this game, but the violence is holding me back. I agree with Hannah completely.

      Take out the militia cards, the bandit cards, and put generic cards on the militia spaces.
      Try that.

    Thank you for your video of this game and others. I love how enthusiastic you get. Whether it's about the game, about how you play the game or the decision points within the game. While I like to be competitive in the games I play ( I am playing to win), it is the social interaction and the fun that my partner or the group I am playing with that is paramount to me. Great to hear your thoughts on these issues. Keep having fun.

    Wow, what a wonderful looking game. Fortunately with my group it's about playing not winning and aggressive move are usually accompanied with "Sorry". I've played with sore losers and they suck the joy out of gaming. Looking forward to trying this one.

    I just wanted to chime in on the attacking vs non attacking. My wife hates the direct attack games so I knew if we played that way it would be the last time I ever played this game. We play this one where we don't use our military against an opponent just the bandits. The gameplay is a lot of fun. There is still racing to grab the buildings that you want & claim the awards before your opponent, but no direct attacking. In one game early on one of us got the right stuff to grab victory points 2-5 at a time for most of his turns, he looked like an easy winner, then my buildings and rolls started to hit and I ended up winning the game. It still works out and is a lot more fun for our group to play it more as a competitive solitaire than attacking which would end up making two of the four in our main gaming group dislike the game. You really can play this one either way with a fun experience depending on the type of game play you want.

    Thanks for the run through! Wonderful as always.
    On the care bear thing, I'm right there with you., though probably not quite to the same degree. I would always prefer to play a game with 0 conflict given the option. Though if my gaming partner doesn't mind the aggressive games I will play them and I can have fun, but it's definitely not my preferred style.

    I bought this game recently (have not had a chance to play, yet), and I agree with most of your observations about it.
    The one downside for me, is that you don't actually have growth to your city. You have development, but your settlement doesn't physically grow.

    Love this game! Just discovered it. I'm not a fan of aggressive games either but I find this one tolerable. There's always a way out of it, but also when attacked it's easily fixed.

    hi Rahdo, great video, I just purchased this game. I have 1 question, at the end of a turn where you can keep 1 of each resource in your stock, does that accumulate over each turn? say by my 3 turn can I have 3 of each resource or is it still only 1 of each?

  • @supercommando440

    Hey have you played this game SOLO? The resource-gathering-so-you-can-get-victorypoints aspect reminds me of Istanbul Dice; it has that same aspect.

    This actually looks meaner than Imperial Settlers. We never had any issues with IS. Attacking other opponents' settlements in IS wasn't a very effective strategy. It was always better to use the sword tokens on you own cards since it would take too many tokens to attack an opponent's location. Machi Koro on the other hand really felt aggressive to my wife. She detested it. I am not sure if she would enjoy this.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 років тому +1

      +jaxommm we hated MK!
      in IS, if the japan player doesn't fear being attacked at all because of care bear tendencies, then that gives them a big advantage because they don't have to spend their workers protecting their stuff (which is what they're designed to do). and if the barbarian isn't willing to attack, they put themselves at a disadvantage, because almost half of their cards are devoted to attacking...

    It's not my place to comment on your 'carebear' attitude. That is your right to play how you want and I would have no problem playing with someone or 3 players (with myself to make it a 4 player game). I would only have an issue if they whined about my play of attacking them. Which having watched your review I don't see you as that type of guy to whine/pout about being attacked.
    I have watch many of your reviews being a subscriber and I have heard you comment on the aggressive games and most of the time I disagree with you or even sometimes completely disagree but my question to you is do you ever feel like you are missing out? Whether hearing or reading about a games and then seeing/hearing of the aggressive nature of the game and having to push the game aside.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  9 років тому +4

      +Kory Walsh in all honesty, i'm happy that my predilections away from even the tiniest big of player conflict help me cut down on the number of games that I find enjoyable, becuase even with that filter (plus the filter of "2 player only") there's still hundreds of games that seem to come out every year worth checking out! so if i actually liked conflict (or played with more than 2) i'd be DOOMED! :)

    Judging by comments left by my peers here, it appears this so-called "Care Bear Syndrome" is more of a personality disorder and/or relationship problem than anything else. I get Richard's angle, though I find it more of a self-made obstacle than anything else, but some of you seem completely lost. Are there any games you can actually play? Decisions made affect other players be they directly or indirectly. How and where do you "care bears" draw the line?My wife and I are as considerate of each other as any other couple, "care bear" or not, and we're able to directly compete with each other without holding a grudge afterward. Seems childish to not only treat a game as a potential relationship breaker, but to look at one's mate as fragile glass whose esteem can shatter in the slightest of conflicts. In fact, it's through this sort of tabletop battling that we show each other respect. I find NO respect being given when one can't even toss a few dice without feeling incredible guilt for doing what the game dictates. Do we need to put disclaimers on games that urge players to "not take the activities performed within personally?" Pointless age and time ranges are listed on games already; seems this one would fit right in. Neither my wife nor I would feel "right" if we played a game to the finish, knowing we intentionally avoided every aspect of direct competition for no other reason than to coddle each other's sensibilities. Some of you fellow Rahdo fans seem to want to completely gut a game, leaving it a hollow carcass on the table, just so you can avoid what apparently would become an awkward fight after it's all said and done. Not sure why couples want to live that way, but hey, more power to ya'! (or is "power" too strong of a word in this case?) Use that backbone for more than remaining upright and enjoy a game as intended like the rest of us. Throw the chains off already!

      +TyphoidBryan "Use that backbone for more than remaining upright and enjoy a game as intended like the rest of us. Throw the chains off already!"
      Or, another options would be to maybe just play games that you enjoy, rather than other games that people think you "should" enjoy... :)

      @Sokara468 9 років тому +3

      +TyphoidBryan "How and where do you "care bears" draw the line?"
      Drawing the line for care-bearing is exactly the same as drawing a line for liking or disliking a game, regardless of the reason. Disliking a game because it doesn't have *enough* aggression is basically the same thing: you could argue where the line should be drawn... And there are hundreds of games to choose from, and the goal is for the people playing to have fun the way they want. Dictating how others should have fun and claiming "a personality disorder and/or relationship problem than anything else" seems rather extreme to me. :)

      @kelson8149 9 років тому

      +rahdo My only thing that confuses me is that you are completely ok with games that are completely passive aggressive. Optimal play in many Euros very often means "I need to take this so you can't since it grants you too many potential points", and it's done passive aggressively. Saying it's not an attack because you stuck a stick in their spokes rather than punching them in the face seems rather ...disingenuous.
      Correct me if I am wrong and you don't play that way. But frequently, I have been in that position with many games that you do enjoy where I have calculated the points from the move and the optimal play is to hurt another player indirectly. I typically feel worse in those situations because of people's tendency to deny it's an attack.
      There is a fine line I think. Very few games have the option to be completely "care-bear" as you describe it. Optimal play always must consider the moves of others and their turn order, because you are aiming for the highest delta between your points and your opponents. If I can deny my opponents 5 points each and gain 6 that is strictly better than a 10 point gain.

    • @smoothcriminal28
      @smoothcriminal28 9 років тому +1

      I think people definitely have the right to play whatever the heck it is that they enjoy at the end of the day. Whether it's super conflict, a little bit or none at all. But I am also a little confused about what you sometimes deem to be too agressive or not Richard. Don't get me wrong, I love you to the end and I respect your voice in the community big time! However, some choices of games that you have stamped as too agressive for you guys have left me puzzled. For example, Deus.. Which isn't even a sixteenth as aggressive as Carson City, which you guys enjoy. I know you guys own ans play a zillion games, but sometimes I wish you wouldn't miss out on such awesome game designs, because in the end.. They're just games! Maybe it's just me though, since my g/f and I aren't soo sensitive to being cutthroat. We know that at the end of the day, it's just a silly game.
