one of the main reasons why Jones is the 🐐 is his ability to maintain such excellent composure under extremely high stress situations. most men would've been panic tapping as soon as he sinched that arm bar
The submission from Jon Jones came much later in the fight. This armbar attempt from Vitor was in round 1. But aside from this near-submission, Jon was in control for the rest of the fight as usual. I think he was just smashing him from guard and his coach said to him between the rounds "pass his guard and finish the fight", and he did exactly that.

I didn't understand what happened at first. I had to watch it again, but gosh, dang, the fact that he was not gonna give up that he turned his weakness into strength is just amazing.
Its simple physics and leverage. His arms are so long the leverage that is normally put on the elbow joint was being exerted on the bones of his forearm. You can hyperextend an elbow this way but you don't have enough leverage to break the two bones in a healthy man's forearm like this. He survived this because he has such long arms.
Can we appreciate how impressively he escaped a fully locked in armbar; by lifting a full grown man attached to his arm, then shaking him up and down him to get his elbow out. The strength that would take and Vitor was a big boy back then too
Not trying to discredit Jones because he has some incredible resolve to power through that, but he didn't escape that submission. Vitor stated in an interview that he thought he felt something pop so he let it go, Jones also said he was just going to let it pop, Vitor's misjudgement is what saved Jones here. When you're in an armbar you never want to straighten your arm out liks this because it causes lots of damage and can break your arm, by picking him up and straightening his arm out he only added more pressure to the submission. Props to him for having the resolve to let it pop and also getting vitor back with a submission, but he did not escape the armbar, intentionally at least.
