Yes, my money is on a "dry" solder joint on the ground that is common to the tacho, fuel gauge and some panel lamps. Give the connector a squirt of contact cleaner for good measure too.
You can also run patch wires on the rear of the cluster for the smaller, more vulnerable connections. Only takes a few minutes and pretty much guarantees against any problems in the future. It's a bit fiddly though if you don't have the right gear.
@@liviu2004 well no actually if your going to do it how it should be done you test the signal voltage to determine everything is ok up to the clocks before diagnosing the clocks xD
Same issue with the dials on my old frontera, same fix as mentioned above. I used to have to bang the dash to get the speedo to work but it drove me mad in the end. Will be an MOT fail if they dont work. Good vids.
On the Astra G there is a Red/white wire you cut going from the head unit. Then it will always show the date in the bottom line of the TID when the radio is on. I did that with mine after installing an after market head unit.
Hello mate I work at JC cars opposite the fat cat on sprowston road my boss is a specialist in cluster repairs and ECUs etc your welcome to run the cluster down to us and I'm sure he might do you a deal if you give us a mention in one of your viedos I see you drive past in some of the videos. I've also got a zetec s fiesta which is what originally drawed me to your videos keep up the good work.
Had a Chevrolet Astra just like your Vauxhall, bought new in 2001. It had a 1.8 liter 8V head engine. Then I did a test drive on the MK-I Focus with the 1.8 liter Zetec 16v. Traded the Chevrolet into the Focus the very same day. Still have the Focus.
3:50 I could have done with one of these when I had my Opel Manta. The full size back end of ordinary car radios were always larger than the depth of the slot, so all car radios had to be mounted about an inch out at the bottom of it. These days of course, you don't even need one. A bluetooth receiver and 4 channel power amp to run Spotify, or whatever, from your mobile phone is all you need these days, and most amps will let you piggyback a audio line signal to a separate power amp for subwoofer.
I had similar problems with the rev counter on my car (clio mk2 ph2 1.6L) . The problem was the connections in the fusebox under the hood. They were corroded and making bad contact so my car had all kinds of weird small electrical issues.I fixed the issue by cleaning the connectors with a special cleaner and using a small amount of grease on the connections. This also completely fixed my car sometimes not starting because of the immobilizer!
Renault clio with electrical problems no way even my 2015 mk4 clio had issues where the wipers would not work on any settings and the lights either untill switched off and back on Again
I would take a guess at the cluster is gone or maybe even an ecu fault.. I have replaced several ecus in that type astra, but can't remember off hand of any was because of dash issues..
Another great video again James. I would just get another dash and just keep your speedo one for your mileage. Or is it a complete dash that you cant separate the dials from. iam not sure.
decode it with a scanner and check for fault codes, from what i can remember its a CAN BUS fault between control module and can bus control module. you can tell which ones are CAN BUS wires as they are twisted together. you need to check the voltages of the 2 wires, normally rule of thumb 5v between the 2. scope is best to see. good luck.

I wonder if the dials not working properly is down to a grounding issue. since half the lights in the display are not working properly. its a shame you cant temprarily put a new dial set in and check. my misses had a similar issue on her Astra 2.0 DTI SLX and there was a loose ground wire behind the wiring cluster to the dial (you may need to trace the wiring). didnt fix the other issue we had with the traction control suddenly turning off at random and the speedo going to zero then coming back up whilst driving

The dials aren't part of the MOT. So long as certain dash lights come on you'll be fine. Technically the speedo needs to work to be totally legal, but it's not an MOT test point.

The signal for the tacho comes from the engine ECU.
There are three things that could cause this problem: A defective instrument cluster, a defective engine ECU, or a wiring fault between the two.
The circuit would need further testing to ascertain exactly where the fault lies - it could get expensive to start guessing!

Diagnostics also means using a test meter to manually check the wiring between the two parts involved, and that the correct signal is being sent out by the ECU. TECH2 (the official Vauxhall diagnostic tester) wouldn't help much with this sort of fault, other than carrying out a test of the instrument panel to make sure the motor that drives the tacho needle actually moves.
The ECU can still control the engine without any problems, even if the output to the tacho failed completely.

I can't remember if these are a separate bulb or an LED soldered to the circuit board. Was there space for a twist in bulb in the position of the oil pressure light?
