Except that Christie’s is no longer owned by the English, and they sell fakes like the Salvator Mundi. The most important thing to the verso of an old master is most definitely NOT the auction accession number. Auction houses routinely misattribute works; they simply don’t have the expertise except in high pressure sales of low pressure works. Derivatives, damaged and duplicates. That is all you’ll ever get at auction.
