"Can you not do that tom thing?" "Can you not do that ee-oh-oh thing? No Sting, the tom thing is just as much a part of the song as the ee-oh-oh thing."
Sting has no idea of what a great drummer he had when he played with Stewart Copeland. The drumming was an integral part of what made the police great.
It blows my mind that Rick has interviewed every member of The Police. If he can land Dave Grohl via Josh, that would be another crazy feather in his cap.
i love that drummers as a whole drum on their steering wheel, i uses to watch my dad do it when i was a kid and i do the same thing. i cant help but play all the best bonham fills on the wheel
This would have to be one of my favourite interviews of all the ones you've done so far. Josh was such a good dude to interview. Great energy and awesome storyteller. His drummings not bad either 😉
CAN WE PLEASE APPRECIATE HOW GODLY TIMED ALL OF THIS IS. Also Josh have an astonishing pocket, thats not an easy thing to do for every one, even with training and used to keep it going in your mind.
lol I just watched a live rehearsal with The Police for the reunion and Sting asked Stewart again “can you not play the flam flam I hate it” I’m like how!? It’s classic Stewart man!!
"Copeland Fills" are a thing, like Jim Morrison's yelps. They happened in the spur of the moment and they are PERFECT. Even the fills that Copeland hates at the end of MIB are great. I don't know why he has a problem with them.
Yeah, they recorded Ghost in the Machine there 6 mo. or so after Moving Pictures. I was mistaken as to the similarities of the drum fills in question, though. Sort of similar, but not really.@@ancientstar2012
I played the Ratt in Boston and CBGBs in NYC, both in 1980. The Police played both places the night before us. (strange huh?) Both places still had a fresh taste of Sting (Gordon Sumner). Ate each plase, the staff, sound & stage crews had nothing good to say about him. As a matter of fact, even the bar staff didn't like him.
From what I hear...sting's solo projects always emphasize calmness in the beat of each song....that's why the police broke up....i'm in stewart's camp...
If Stewart had been a better and more obedient little drummer there would have been no Police. I was 14. I was there. The Police sound was what sold them to the woŕld and it was a group creation. I was there, hearing that sound coming out of my little boombox speaker.
Everyone plays that wrong. It’s 4 hits, then 5. Da-da-da-da, Da-da-da-da-da. Specifically, it’s the last two sixteenth notes of beat one, the first two of beat two, all four of beat three, and first 16th of beat four. If you listen carefully, there is no hit on the third 16th of beat two. But almost everyone hits there.
He has must have such an amazing feel for tempo considering he played those fills perfectly without even listening to the music!
It's a drummer thing
The editing is great overlaying the music with his perfectly on time lap drumming.
this is something I awlays notice in these videos too, and it's not just drummers cause it happens on the short with Kirk too
You couldn't be in 7th grade band class if you couldn't so that lol
Yeah ugh he’s a drummer my friend lol
Glad no one listened to Sting’s comments about The Tom thing !❤😂
Checked out a live video of Freese playing it w/ Sting: he does NOT play the tom thing ☹️
Stingo didn't like the way Copeland played, and Stewart loved to make him mad doing fills and stuff haha
@@pulsemapsprobably bc Sting is a bit of a douche and never liked Stewart's love of being a bit extra
@@joseanlHe likes the way Vinny plays.
@@joseanl Similar to the Townsend/Moon relationship... remarkable.

That trio was magical for sure.
Sting only has ideas about Sting... has zero respect for his former bandmates.
@@fredcapolongo5909 Deep down he knows he owes them big time. But he did have the magic pen, that much is true about his delusions of grandeur.
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266hehe magic pen
but true! They were so good.
@@fredcapolongo5909 Which is why Sting's music eventually became adult contemporary.

call it macaroni
The honest look of shock on Rick’s face, actually brings this musical dude great joy 😂 Love ya buddy ❤
That face Rick made was gold 😆
One of my favorite drummers is Stewart Copeland. So good for stuff like this
Stewart is one of the greats. A once in a generation talent.
Rick doesn't make your favorite music.. He makes your favorite music BETTER! Mr. 3M
Stewart needs to see this!
He will see it..
Stewart lived it so he already knows 😂
He knows...he knows.
Of course he knows...
He'd just nod his head
i love that drummers as a whole drum on their steering wheel, i uses to watch my dad do it when i was a kid and i do the same thing. i cant help but play all the best bonham fills on the wheel
And us git players grab the 1:00 position on the steering wheel and shred...
That moment of that song is phenomenal, it gives the song great punch where normally one wouldnt expect it. I dig that part, too.
I love the energy of Freese
This would have to be one of my favourite interviews of all the ones you've done so far. Josh was such a good dude to interview. Great energy and awesome storyteller. His drummings not bad either 😉
Josh is such a musical player.
He sounds like Matthew McConaughey in The Wolf of Wallstreet
Alright alright alriiiight!
Haha I was getting the Full McConaughey vibe and then read your comment. 100%
"Keeps u sharp between the ears"😂
I was thinking about typing this comment and saw it here. Is this guy from Texas?
Drummer: plays no fills
Singer: perfect
Josh is an animal of a drummer too.
His work with A Perfect Circle is a master class in percussion.
Isn’t he with the Foo Fighters now?
CAN WE PLEASE APPRECIATE HOW GODLY TIMED ALL OF THIS IS. Also Josh have an astonishing pocket, thats not an easy thing to do for every one, even with training and used to keep it going in your mind.
Rick's whole channel has taught me to pay more attention to drums
Stewart has always been my 1st pick. Just great feel and timing
He got me at Dude i ihave to do that thing 😂
Rick's facial expression killed me. 😅
So SPOT ON! Love it!
Josh is so amazing. APC hasn't been the same without him
Ol’ Stingo was testing the waters to see if he could finally get a Copeland part without the Copeland.
Fuck yeah Josh Freese!
Josh freese is the best
lol I just watched a live rehearsal with The Police for the reunion and Sting asked Stewart again “can you not play the flam flam I hate it” I’m like how!? It’s classic Stewart man!!
Josh Freese is right up there with the rest...
He told STING.
Fantastic.
Josh being the boss! hahaha
Stuart is a REALLY funny dude hahah
Sting relented and let him play the tom.
That part of the interview was a pure magic moment ❤❤❤ 🙏🙏🙏
Josh freese is one of my favorite drummers of all time
In my top 3 drummers of ALL TIME
Josh channeled Matthew McConaughey a bit there "ive air drummed that on my steering wheel since i was 16"
Copeland is a genius!!
"I've air-drummed it on my steering wheel since I was sixteen" line had Matthew McConaughey vibe ❤️
I'm not a musician nor a fan of a lot the music he covers but this is such a great channel and I've learned quite a bit. ❤
"Copeland Fills" are a thing, like Jim Morrison's yelps. They happened in the spur of the moment and they are PERFECT. Even the fills that Copeland hates at the end of MIB are great. I don't know why he has a problem with them.
And there you have it- It takes two
One of Stewart's biggest fans was Neil Peart and that says a lot.
He's timing is great😮
Sting would be working a 9-5 if it weren’t for Copeland.
😂 funny, but I don’t know about that
Come on dude..
He would have been a fine English teacher. And he could have put change in the cup of the old homeless guy John Lennon who never met Paul McCartney.
Sting was so used to Stewart not playing the same thing twice. I am sure even Stewart doesn't play the Tom part all the time.
The police are my favorite band
I love drummers
GREAT story 🎉🎉🎉
When he makes that excited expression, he looks so much like Matthew McConaughy.
The question is, how many times did Sting asked the same thing to Stewart?
too many
What a legend
The Camera Eye. Both recorded at Le Studio.
That Rush song😮
Saw a short documentary about the current condition of that place: totally abandoned. Kinda sad.
So the police recorded at Le Studio also?
Yeah, they recorded Ghost in the Machine there 6 mo. or so after Moving Pictures. I was mistaken as to the similarities of the drum fills in question, though. Sort of similar, but not really.@@ancientstar2012

Alright, alright, alright!
Hundred percent.
Josh did follow up the “tom thing” over dinner. Josh wasn’t going to override Sting, but Sting allowed it. lol
Freese: Sting, my dude, please don't ask me to stop being a drummer.
He's got that Mathew McConaughey voice. Never knew that.
Reminds me of the “more cowbell” sketch.

I wonder if Sting wanted it changed because it reminded him of Copeland

That's so funny 😅
Ha! I practice guitar on my steering wheel.
I need to watch the big video to hear what he mighr have said about DEVO
If youre a drummer, dont ever listen to the vocalists suggestion. Consider what the guitarist suggests, and do what they bassist says just out of pity
Cool
Some vocalists really get thrown off with the extra.

No, Josh played in Stings solo band
That's crazy to hear. Lol

Gary Busey
The more breaks u take out the more u become a lounge band
Sting’s comment is probably jealousy, and didn’t want him to get attention off of himself…
No wonder why Stewart wanted to beat Sting's a** all the time
Gordon just keeps showing up as a disk, right?
