The well of adoration I have for Courtney Barnett just got dug a little deeper. It's not a flashy performance, but the nods to the charming Rawlings chromatics are so heartwarming. My ex thought this song was originally by Sylvan Esso. She also thought Hallelujah was written by Dispatch, so... not the sole indictment for a failed relationship, but a perfect metaphor. And a reminder that this glazing is not isolated - that music has turned into a bowl of popcorn - a product to be mindlessly consumed, which has allowed its exploitation. Good music is a story and a gift. I believe it matters who is telling it and why.
If you haven't found her duet of this with Phoebe Bridgers, then it's worth your time. They did it for the virtual Newport Folk Festival in 2020 and it's so perfect.
She possesses such distinctive style. Slight Elizabeth Cotten finger picking + Alternative rock chord progression + Honest poetry = Courtney Barnett. The world really needs more of her
Just came to visit this video of Courtney singing this song and also visited Gillian Welch’s video. They’re both genius really. Courtney plays Her guitar incredibly beautiful and it’s like she’s playing both the guitar parts Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings are playing together.. Such an awesome talent and voices.
After seeing Courtney Barnett on Austin City Limits, a few months ago, I have become an instant fan... I grew up in the 70s and 80s and she reminds me of that era while still being quite fresh... She is a unique gem :)
OMG, my new favorite artist covering THIS. From the album of my childhood. Thank you Dad for playing this out when I was young. Long live The Revelator. Bless you, Courtney Barnett.
Everything is free now That's what they say Everything I ever done Gonna give it away Someone hit the big score They figured it out That we're gonna do it anyway Even if it doesn't pay I can get a tip jar Gas up the car Try to make a little change Down at the bar Or I can get a straight job I've done it before Never minded working hard It's who I'm working for And everything is free now That's what they say Everything I ever done Gotta give it away Someone hit the big score They figured it out That we're gonna do it anyway Even if it doesn't pay Every day I wake up Hummin' a song But I don't need to run around I just stay home And sing a little love song My love, to myself If there's something that you want to hear You can sing it yourself 'Cause everything is free now That's what I say No one's got to listen to The words in my head Someone hit the big score And I figured it out That we're gonna do it anyway Even if it doesn't pay
My gosh! I am totally amazed how Courtney can do this song since she does alternative rock. So I'm learning she is versatile. This is refreshing and relief. Since I am very versatile in my music and tastes of genres this really amazes me. So I wasn't sure if she'd like my or other people's styles of music. All the more why I am appreciating her. I love how she does a country/folk song in her own beautiful, alternative/folk melodic way. Although I enjoy Gillian quite much, I really enjoy Courtney and they have their own unique sound. However, I really adore Courtney's version though. Thank you Courtney. Blessings.
I've rarely ever heard somebody cover ole Gilligan... she and Curt sure do study all genres of music and are heading out for awhile... best musical moment of my day so far... thanks...
One of my favorites covering one of my favorites. She does a terrific job making this song her own while sprinkling in a little Rawlings guitar flavor.
This was a great version and honoring Gillian and David both in performance of voice and guitar. Doing a Rawlings guitar style on ukulele is awesome. You made this version your own character even while complimenting Welch and Rawlings. Thanks also for keeping the original wording. Wonderful performance. performance
a brilliant cover of the Gillian Welch / Dave Rawlings tune that caustically eviscerates music piracy. I think it's originally from their disc "Time the Revelator" from 2001.
By piracy... you mean the entire music publishing industry as it stands currently? Spotify is legal. Apple Music at least pays three cents a play (when they pay), gone are the 79 cent download payouts because everything is a subscription, all content is a license not a physical object or even a file. Napster didn't do this, ffs, the industry was itching to destroy art for decades. Every format change has unilaterally downgraded writers. And people ask where the songwriters went. With exceptions like the wonderful Barnett, songs are now more like reality shows... semi scripted. A thousand "writers" and "producers," but no central vision or commitment. Just... content. Enjoy the wasteland.
"Someone hit the big score, they figured it out....They were gonna do it anyway, even if it doesn't pay" -Gillian Welch's timeless lyrics on the reality of modern musicians. Fantastic cover Courtney Barnett needs to be known
heck yeah I love her voice, I just feel a strange connection with her through her melancholic style.. she can really pluck with my heartstrings, hope to hear more from her soon
Father john misty sent me to gillian Welch and now here. Great cover just like his, I love Courtney Barnett would love to hear Kurt Vile cover it next haha.
This song is never not good!! Courtney Barnett, Conor Oberst, Phoebe Bridgers, even the snarky Father John Misty cover is still killer.. Gillian is truly amazing
About 1 minute in, I decided this Voice is filled with passion and Nuances. Gillian would like it a lot. Never stop singing Young one.
Yessssssss!! Thank you drunk me for randomly finding this.
Yep. Glad you appreciate drunk me too
Thanks
The algorithm was looking out for you.
Lol me too
Hope sober you remembers it.

@Ryan Dougherty ..beautifully said 👍🏽
Wow , yeah - what you said !!
The fact she even knew this brilliant Gillian Welch tune gives her credibility. It's a gorgeous and respectful cover.
She played this cover live in Dublin and I've been returning to this video ever since, her singing and masterful guitar playing is just so powerful
Yeah she can REALLY play. Even when she's loose and nasty on her electric sometimes, she's masterful in her attitude with it.
If you haven't found her duet of this with Phoebe Bridgers, then it's worth your time. They did it for the virtual Newport Folk Festival in 2020 and it's so perfect.
wow. old man here...Gillian welch fan...thank you. this is great.
Great song choice, great rendition, and love that she basically became both Welch AND Rawlings.
This made me cry. Things don't make me cry.
Just flawless. I'm still playing Lotta Sea Lice on repeat. Now comes Tell Me How You Really Feel. Thank you, Courtney!
She inspires me to pick up my guitar again. Love you, CB! ♥️♥️
She possesses such distinctive style. Slight Elizabeth Cotten finger picking + Alternative rock chord progression + Honest poetry = Courtney Barnett. The world really needs more of her
Ashraf Rahman Nice to see someone namedrop Elizabeth Cotton.
Beautifully said.
Dude, it's a cover of Gilian Welch
That a David Rawlings and Gillian Welch song
Look to the source. There’s a LOT more of this.
Just came to visit this video of Courtney singing this song and also visited Gillian Welch’s video.

I had no idea that this existed until now. I love both Gillian Welch and Courtney. What a wonderful performance, it brings a tear to the eye.
Hey it's actually rlly cool to see Gillian get credit for being a genius
Word
absolutely
i think the idea is that she would get financially rewarded for her work. i wonder if she does when other people cover this song.
@@sarahfaith6531 She should get paid mechanical royalties.

Ńeverything is free
Awesome that she added Dave Rawlings’ seasoning, that dissonance, in the instrumentals.
Damn she can shred on that acoustic all day
Manages to do Gillian's part and David's at the same time. Very good player.

what a beautiful fingerpicking performance! i didn't know courtney barnett could fingerpick so well.
Everything is free now
That's what they say
Everything I ever done
Gonna give it away
Someone hit the big score
They figured it out
That we're gonna do it anyway
Even if it doesn't pay
I can get a tip jar
Gas up the car
Try to make a little change
Down at the bar
Or I can get a straight job
I've done it before
Never minded working hard
It's who I'm working for
And everything is free now
That's what they say
Everything I ever done
Gotta give it away
Someone hit the big score
They figured it out
That we're gonna do it anyway
Even if it doesn't pay
Every day I wake up
Hummin' a song
But I don't need to run around
I just stay home
And sing a little love song
My love, to myself
If there's something that you want to hear
You can sing it yourself
'Cause everything is free now
That's what I say
No one's got to listen to
The words in my head
Someone hit the big score
And I figured it out
That we're gonna do it anyway
Even if it doesn't pay
Wow - love Courtney and love hearing that she appreciates the beauty of Gillian's music

Love this. Courtney with the little guitar and a great song. I'd adore an album of this. Thanks ever so much for sharing.
Me and Courtney have the same taste in music. Probably why I love her music.
I've rarely ever heard somebody cover ole Gilligan... she and Curt sure do study all genres of music and are heading out for awhile... best musical moment of my day so far... thanks...
