One of my favorite games of all time! Beautiful game. I loved the gameplay mechanics and wish more games did this. It's a shame we'll probably never get another after VC4. What the heck is wrong with gamers? Why didn't this series catch on?!
No marketing from Sega + no worldwide release + release on dead platforms or to early (PS3 + PSP) + terrible release date (they released VC4 with Monster Hunter World in Japan, and with Dragon Quest XI in West + after Fire Emblem Three Houses announcement, which overshadowed this game from huge marketing, because Sega not spend millions $ on marketing like Nintendo did). I loved this game back in the day, the story is so good. I got super invested that when I couldn’t reach some of my fallen characters, I truly felt it.
I am an ardent opponent of permadeath in video games as a general rule, but the way Valkyria Chronicles implemented it is one of the few good ways to do it. By giving the player the option to send a medic to help the fallen soldier, the game changed permadeath from an incredibly annoying mechanic into a choice for the player. Throughout playing the game, I never lost a soldier to permadeath because every time a soldier fell, I always mounted a rescue operation which succeeded. It was a fascinating gameplay mechanic, a soldier falls, and immediately, a mission to capture the flag transforms into a rescue operation.
As an unexpected corollary to this: the game tries very hard to make you sympathise with Selvaria, but I never really forgave her for killing Dallas at Barious (she riddled her with laserbeams and stomped on her body in the same activation; there was nothing I could do). The real problem I had was how the invincible bosses can basically run through your army with no downsides. Wish they could be stunned or temporarily defeated to give you some chance as fairness. Only the tanks if you hit them lose AP as Riley was able to solo our date

Let's hope in this AND MORE will be also Valkyria Chronicles, but it will be developed as already by diffirent people, not original developers.
@@nr2676 I'm still pissed they butchered Sakura Wars. Gotta blame Team Sonic for that. They could have stick with the old system and gauge people's interest first before jumping into the hack and slash bandwagon.
@@suiken3149 They probably give this series a second chance according to leaks and job offer from 2023. But please, stop changing everything into mindless button mashers dear Sega (Shining games on PS2 & PS3, Altered Beast 2005, Golden Axe The Beast Rider, Valkyria Revolution, Sakura Wars 2019 etc.).
Great game, I didn't realize it was that popular, though.
Yeah it’s basically Fire Emblem meets XCom.. Prolly my 2nd fav SRPG series behind FE
@@Mintcar923 Actually XCOM it's like Valkyria Chronicles, because VC was released earlier than XCOM on PS3. And there was interview with developer of XCOM, when they told they took inspirations in gameplay from Valkyria Chronicles.
@@nr2676 Well a game could be like another game.. It doesn’t really matter which came first
@@Mintcar923 Yeah, but most of people compare to more popular IP, not for IP who did that first. And technically Sakura Wars 3 in 2001 did that even earlier, than VC and was developed by same dev team, but that game never left outside of Japan. This means a Sega Overworks was 10 years ahead of its time.
A great game it’s a shame 3 never got officially released in the west
Sony US dropped the ball on that one citing piracy and lack of player desire for the sequel to be worth their time and effort aka we don't see the game making the profit numbers we want so what happened? We bought the game from Japan and translated the damn thing ourselves all while shoving it in Sony US's faces because they could literally do nothing about it
Top 5 games for me
Loved this series, except for the spin off. Wished I could watch the anime
Catgirls riding lizards? Write it down. WRITE IT DOWN!!!
I still remember the days back when the game was first released on PS3 me and others who were playing it we were all trying to spread the word on big forums like GAF and elsewhere of just how good this game was and that every PS3 owner should at least try it. Unfortunately the initial sales were disappointing even though the game itself was critically acclaimed (and rightfully so).
I just hope we see VC5 one day as well as a localised remaster of VC3 for modern consoles.
I got it on release day. I still LOVE this game. I cried so much after chapter 13.
I also grabbed it up when it was made available on Steam.
1st view? I see Valkyria Chronicles I like
Alicia is cute!
I never play Valkyria Chronicles before, but i already played valkyria revolution on ps4. I love the story and gameplay even many people hate that game..
Dude, try the original.
Story in VR is surprisingly very good, and game is not that bad if you count this game more like Visual Novel with ,,gameplay''.
Senjo no Valkyria translates more closely to “Valkyria of the Battlefield” than just “Battlefield Valkyria”
Was recommended the series with VC4 by a friend a couple years ago, and once finishing that one I immediately grabbed VC1. Really love the games. Only critique I have is that I wish they were a bit more grounded in reality in respect to the Valkeries. I think the games each go downhill when those things make an appearance.
The real problem I had was how the invincible bosses can basically run through your army with no downsides.
Wish they could be stunned or temporarily defeated to give you some chance as fairness. Only the tanks if you hit them lose AP as Riley was able to solo our date
@@ivanbluecool Valkyrias are treated like Super Saiyans and thats not a bad thing. Bosses can only run through your army if you apply wrong strategy.
I almost missed this game, and I am so glad I didn't. I didn't pick it up until the PS4 version, but it led to me amassing the whole series. No regrets. Just a lingering sadness that 2 and 3 were never given a proper console treatment. And in 3s case, a proper localization. Or, at least a translation given how... questionable... localizations have been lately.
VC4 localization was really bad.
