    As requested I've made a very quick table of contents so you don't have to watch the parts you aren't interested in. :)
    0:36 Using English subtitles in subs2srs
    5:15 What exactly is i+1?
    13:01 Creating branch cards/how long to spend on new cards
    18:33 Resources for finding example sentences + what to do with words that are found alone
    23:11 Should you watch a show before sentence mining it with subs2srs anki decks?
    24:58 Should you add sentences for words that aren't i+1?

      @West Asian Levantine Because glossika is frequently wrong and you are not learning the words in a natural environment - you are only learning the words the software tells you to.

    Hey matt, thanks for the video, I have another question.
    How worth is the monolingual transition?
    I've been doing it for like a month now, I have 125 cards on my "dictionary vocab" deck, but I feel I'm learning very uncommon words, just for the sake of reading a J-J dictionary, I could use this time in just keep learning normal or common words instead of wasting time learning to use a J-J dictionary.
    Is it worth the time? I mean, Steve kaufmann (polyglot) says he never uses a monolingual dictionary and speak like 15 languages, why waste time on learning how to read definitions if you could just learn the word faster with the bilingual dictionary?
    Thanks!

    When you finish RTK in Anki (as in all cards are finally in Learning/Young/Mature status), would you stop and move on to sentences purely, or continue reviewing the cards until they become just a small amount per day?

    Hey! I was thinking the other day about active and passive immersion and more specifically the time table for those and I was wondering if you could tell me/us what your average day (with or without other activities) looks like and what your most optimal day looks like. Atm my schedule is pretty much open all day every day meaning I can spend all of my time doing active immersion but that also means that my passive immersion time suffers! Thanks you in advance!

    Hey Brit! Would you recommend mining shoes that are dubbed? Usually the audio and sentence don’t match up but would you recommend just mining using subs2srs using the snapshot of the show and sentence without the audio?

    Thanks for the video. I have a question on sentences mining and Anki in general. I'm not really sentence mining, rather I'm just going through decks (high score girl & Terrace house) and basically just studying them. I'm doing 10 new cards from each deck a day, plus the review of the cards that i've already gone through. I usually hit the same card for a good 4-6 days in a row, then it will show back up every 10 or so days, and I've been doing this for a few months now. I'm just not sure if this style is effective at all. I'm currently 10 months into studying, and as an example i cam across this card yesterday for the first time and was able to read and understand it with no furigana (外の地獄に放り出されて 風邪をひくっ!) Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated

    There's always a problem that's bothered me. With a huge forest of unknown words, you could literally spend an infinite time mining sentences. The question then becomes, do you have any way to prioritise what sentences you learn over others? Or even, what sentences you should say 'screw you' to and delete? (I guess this is more for very rare words, kinda links to reading)

    I don't get mining sentences. What's the difference if I mine 孫 on its own or a sentce like 彼は私の孫だ。if I already know all the words in it. Is the only purpose of sentence mining encouraging people to read so they can find more sentences?

    • @bartbabbe

      A properly picked sentence will give you more context to help you better understand the meaning but I think just as important is that you‘ll be able to remember the word far easier because you have the whole sentence that the word gets connected to in your brain. So even if that means you‘ll not always be able to read that word in the wild, you‘ll still notice it when you hear it. And remember: You learn how to read by reading, not solely through Anki. So don‘t feel bad about not being able to read a word that you have already learned. Despite Kanji, listening is a lot harder and far more important until your listening comprehension is pretty high.

    • @Gopfs
      @Gopfs 6 років тому

      @@PatChatGC You won't learn how the words are used with just one sentence, because they have different usages. You'll "learn" just 1 use. And that's provided you also memorise the sentences.

    • @Gopfs
      @Gopfs 6 років тому

      @@PatChatGC yeah, my point is why waste time on getting familiar with this sentence in your anki deck if you, as you said yourself, will encounter it reading books etc.

    Hello Matt! I've asked you a similar question but I think this can be useful for other ajatters too. (Except for using sub2srs) Have you completely relied just on the sound, or what you heard, to create your cards? Have you just listened and transcribed what you heard or have you checked the japanese subtitles? Have you created cards from audiobooks? If yes, how? Thank you again

  • @Re3iRtH
    @Re3iRtH 6 років тому

    It's a shame. All of the successful AJATTers started with anime as a bulk of their listening.
    Since I cannot get into anime no matter how hard I try, I am suck just doing Anki and reading NHK easy.
    I have been talking sentences for vocab from your Terrace House subs2srs deck, so thanks for that :)
    My question is, is there any other beginner listening material for Japanese besides anime and cartoons? I'm looking for something like the history of China and Japan for kids, etc.

      @@sora-pd1oc I will move to Japan in 2023. I have already started buying rental houses for investment in Japan, however I use a third-party management company who does all the contracts and negotiations. I want to be fluent by that time and be able to read and sign business contracts in Japanese. Plus, a lot of the things that I have done my whole life such as heat exposure / sauna / bath house and drinking green tea daily is already a big part of Japanese culture :)

      bro, get a VPN and watch Japanese Netflix, or use jisho.org and translate into japanese the type of Japanese videos you want to watch, odds are it is on Japanese UA-cam. Also ForJoyTv for $30 a month will get you unlimited Japanese on-demand television on any streaming device

      @@Hoffnung7558 I'm waiting to get a good internet connection and a VPN when I move out of Alaska in three or four months. We don't have unlimited internet where I live that is reliable or fast, so three hundred bucks per month for crappy internet is not something I want to do now. However, the other place I'll be moving to after this will be good to go.
      I've never heard of Japanese UA-cam. Is this not something we can access without a VPN?
      So far, I do appreciate the advice but everything you guys have told me still is intermediate or advanced content. I'm talking about something at the level of Shin-chan or Sazaesan that isn't cartoons. I can follow Japanese dramas pretty well with subtitles but as soon as I turn them off I don't understand anything.

    Random question about subs2srs,
    I'm getting an issue with the video files saying "Unhandled exception has occurred". There isn't anything wrong with the video files, and it happens with all sorts of files I have and regardless of where on my computer they are stored. Any idea how to fix this?

    kind of urgent question, if you don't mind.. I wasn't able to do reps for 2 weeks, now I have 1500 cards in due, is it safe to do them in 1(2) days? Isn't it risky? My intuition tells me that I would forget them very quickly even If I go through them
