Is it possible to somehow create subs2srs deck from book with audio? I mean if audiobook and text are available. I think it would be amazing source of cool sentences with native audio
But do you have to read the sentence out loud when doing reps?

Could you write out the Kanji and hiragana of the two Japanese dictionaries you like? Cheers man.

Daijriin: 大辞林 （だいじりん）
from wiki: One of the biggest differences between Daijirin and Kōjien definitions is how they arrange meanings. A dictionary can arrange entries either historically with the oldest recorded meanings first (e.g., Kōjien and Oxford English Dictionary) or popularly with the most common meanings first (e.g., Daijirin and American Heritage Dictionary).

I'm assuming that 2nd one is okay. I will be reading to go monolingual in a couple of months I believe. Between my own sentences, and various pre-made decks I've gone through, core2k, and a pitch accent deck, I think I've done around 1500 sentence cards, possibly a little more.
MattvsJapan recommends doing around ~4K before going monolingual, BrittvsJapan ~1K.
Sooo... any thoughts on that. I'll admit I don't listen as much as I should. I cannot get into manga and anime, so listening materials are sparce. I can understand 40% of certain dramas if I really focus.
Any thoughts on when I should go monolingual?
@@Re3iRtH try it out and see if you can already make progress. I also only did Tae Kim sentences and maybe around 750-1000 pre-made core deck sentences. Just went straight into the Monolingual transition after maybe 100-200 bilingual cards so yeah its possible. Mattvsjapan recommends 4k because some people had trouble with it but you can try it out whenever you want and if it doesn't work out to your liking just come back at a later time. Also do you like Japanese variety shows? I've been watching knight scoop lately and there's a lot of variety TV content out there.
@@Killzone626 I don't even know what 'Japanese variety' means. :p I've been watching J-dramas with J-subs but am looking for more interesting stuff.
@@Re3iRtH variety show is a genre, those weird entertainment game shows, quiz shows, comedy shows etc like gaki no tsukai, knight scoop or Takeshis castle and so on.

I just finished mining Tae Kim’s grammar guide. Where do you Matt, or any of you guys, get your grammar explanations for self made cards? Or do you only use plain word definitions on the back of your cards?
Just Bob they dont study the grammar, but treat the particles as words themselves, you learn the grammar through immersion and just passively in sentence mining in general
What Ear Rapist said although if you do want an explanation then just look the "grammar" up in a Japanese dictionary and you will find an explanation just like any other word in Japanese.
BritVsJapan thank you both for the feedback, it does make sense that immersion and looking things up in the dictionary might be enough. I guess I became used to having a grammar explanation by doing tae kim, a habit I’ll need to get rid of before transitioning into monolingual cards
Is it good practice to re-watch shows in your active immersion in the same way you would continuously re-play the same shows you've already seen in passive immersion? Or is it better to always be looking for new material to actively immerse with?
Both are great and it's something I did a lot of, you just need a good balance as on one hand you get exposed to the same structures and words making it easy to learn those, but on the other hand there's only so much Japanese in one TV series so you want to branch out as well.
i have the audio both on the front and back but i unchecked the automatically play audio option
I personally have the audio and the text on the front, when I'm doing my reps I just listen to the audio first without reading the text and try to understand just by hearing it, then I look at the text afterwards. I only press fail if I didn't understand even reading the kanji.
hello! sorry if it sounds like something you already said before but as a non native english speaker (not a excuse btw) sometimes i dont really understand things lmao
my question is, how you understand what is in the deck? like you deck is only japanese in the front and japanese audio in the back, how you know the translation? the meaning? like: sakana = fish.
you dont have anything in english in the deck, how you know the meaning of the japanese word?

You'll understand it _Subconsciously_ , right now, if i told you that the meaning of Salmon is: a type of fish, typically depicted as orange or red, then you'd understand it without another language, how? Your brain just adapted that instead of 魚(sakana)=fish=blob of animal, it just goes straight like 魚(Sakana)=Blob of animal.

Quick question about going monolingual. I know that Matt, and probably you, have said that dictionary vocab is the biggest hurdle when going monolingual, so I was wondering if there was some resource that I could use to learn the vocab (like a list of words commonly used in dicts that I could then get sentences for), or is the best way to simply use monolingual dicts a lot and take and learn the words you don’t know?
There is the jalup intermediate deck iirc but that comes with a hefty price tag. Its basically dictionary words in a i+1 fashion.

@@Re3iRtH yes check mattvsjapans monolingual transition video, that's how I am doing it right now. Slowly weening myself off and only using Japanese to English after 2 layers deep.

The reviews for sentences are soo long because I get them wrong all of the time, it is working but it is inefficient to me because it is seeping away from my immersion time, so I add words to my anki instead, so I hope it works, if anyone has tips, plz comment
I started mining two weeks ago and that's exactly what I do. Although mined whole 1st ep of one anime into anki deck I didn't even try to learn it's sentences yet.
Right now I'm taking these sentences apart word by word (if I don't understand some) creating separate deck, while listening to audio all the time, and when I finally will learn meanings of these words (even though in a context their meaning can be a bit altered) I'm gonna learn sentences them containing.
Also adding audio files to every word with awesometts using mainly Oddcast bc for some reason recommended by Matt Naver doesn't work with japanese.
Hope that makes some sense.
Do less cards?
Do less cards for now and focus on easier cards too. You will get a lot of stuff wrong in the beginning and that's fine, but going for easier cards will help a tonne. Fewer easy sentence cards will be more beneficial for you than more vocab only cards. Also take a look into timeboxing and see if that helps you focus and get your cards done quicker :)
