Thank you! We have horseflies that around our pool. They were just an annoyance until I got a bad bite on my knee. I found this site, spent $20 on supplies and built one with your instructions. 4 different flies came to the pool and all 4 eventually ended up in the trap. This is some great science!
I've looked all over UA-cam and this seems to be the best design and the most helpful step by step instruction. Thanks for doing this!!! BLACK seems to be the best color for the ball according to other videos, since the horseflies use infrared vision and hunt for warm. Black is warmer than blue. I did my toule fabric cutting slightly different. I didn't cut it until it was all attached to the hoop. I did your zip tie attachment idea and just started on one side of the hula hoop and worked my way around. When the toule was about half attached I hung it as a cone shape using a temporary center attachment to the cone. This allowed me to finesse the attachment and keep the cone shape. Then I continued around the hula hoop. When I got all the way around the hula hoop, I trimmed the toule fabric vertically from bottom to the top of the cone, allowing a couple inches of overlap. LAST ... Two design revisions that I'm considering (1) I'd like to find a better attachment between the toule and the mason jar lid, so that the toule stays attached while I empty the flies. Haven't figured that out yet. (2) I wonder if clear vinyl would last longer than toule. Maybe you need toule so that it "breathes" and allows the ball to be the hottest part of the ensemble?
@jamesspringer1540 please make a video of your version of this? Our horses are miserable and the black sticky balls traps, we paid way too much for, collected so much dust from the gravel roads that they weren't effective.
Be sure to put your trap in a sunny place and have the ball at least belly height of your animals (3’ or so). Also be aware the tulle will degrade overtime also. I seem to get about a year out of mine in full sun. I also found it a little more effective to have the ball halfway of the hula hoop. Half peering from the bottom and half on top. And size the ball to your hula hoop big hoop big ball for the most effective fly capture. Thanks for a great video! Getting ready to make some adjustments to my own.
Thanks a million for your Knowledge Sir cause every summer my yard is a horsefly nightmare . I'm definitely giving this a try. May the LORD JESUS bless you & yours Greatly for sharing your God given gifts to others.
Excellent 👍. Thank you 😊👍 I just got but 4 times on my foot and leg. Came in to see what I can do and came across your vide. Thank you for sharing I'm going to try it 😁
Made this the way you did and it works!! Thank you for helping me take my yard back... I plan on making a few more to put around the yard. Thanks again
The March fly season has started here. I was about to build your trap but have come up with an alternative. I have found that they are very attracted to denim or blue jeans so if you make of have a dark room or large box then inside hang a Bug Zapper (A two blue globe one is best) and the floor will be littered with the dead flies in no time. I have had mine running two days now and I have a feeling that I am getting on top of it. There are less around my dogs crate - and they were driving him crazy.
I'm going to try this! Our home is near strip pits, and the abundance of horse and deer flies is pretty high, making us and the horses pretty miserable. I like your humbirds!
A small cocoon of chicken wire may have been easier for the hanger. Great concept once you know how the flies move around. Thanks for the demo. The new greenhouse looks grand! Happy Planting.
Loved your video, and your trap design! It's almost the end of the horse fly season in North Carolina, but your video now has me looking for the parts to build one (or ten) of these for next season. I have a black Percheron mare that is tormented mercilessly by these Bugs from Hell. The only way to kill them is to smash them senseless so they fall in the dirt, then grind them to oblivion with a boot heel. Then 20 more come around to see what's going on! Pardon the drama, but I hope they all make a one way flight into the trap jar. Building several inexpensive and effective traps that can be placed where needed is a much better idea than paying big bucks for one that probably does not work as well. Thanks for being so generous with your time and experience, and for sharing your design. Horses everywhere thank you!
Glad to help. Both the horses and the people that care for them! I know God had a purpose for every creature but I am really finding it hard to believe that Horseflies have a real purpose other than causing pain! :-) Chuck
There's a squadron of them hanging around my entryway, acting like rats on crack. I hit them with wasp spray and they die screaming. They're breeding in the dumpster on the driveway. I was looking for something like a flea bomb to throw in the dumpster. A flea bomb may not kill them, but I bet they wouldn't like it. Some of the big red wasps around here act sick for about two minutes after I spray them, spool up their wings for a few seconds while giving me the stink eye and then book on out. I think one of'em keyed my truck.
Thanks for the video. I've seen the ones you talked about for $300. All I need is a hula hoop, the cloth, and a ball. Thanks for working out "the Bugs" for this design.
I guess I need to know the diameter of the hoop, I bought a larger one and the 42 inch mesh is not now here's big enough. When zip tied it has hardly any cone at all
loved the time he took to show how something is done. I would suggest using a white ball or half white and black. When I ride my horse in a white helmet, the flies leave the horse and coat my helmet. I think it may be the heat reflection. Anyway, just a suggestion someone might try. I will when I make one. Thank you!
I'm so excited to try this! My Father's property backs up to a horse pasture, We got a pool for the grand-kids but don't want them attacked by horseflies! Any suggestions on to how far away from a pool or patio we should keep the trap? Thanks in advance!
Kelli Ramirez between the wood line and the pool. I have 4 of them and I empty them every week. It will cut down the population for sure. I still get an occasional fly at the pool but it is nothing like it use to be. Take care. Oh spray water on the ball when you are in the pool
Imagine if you will, a man in the woods on a mountain bike riding on his 4th mile in black cycling shorts. All of a sudden, WHAM! Attack of the horseflies! Been there. You are soooo right! They love heat and they love black.
+Randy Hill Oh my, I bet that was a helpless feeling. No way around it , you just have to battle your way home and treat your wounds then. Hope all is well my friend! Chuck
Hi Chuck How do I calculate how much tule I need? I don't understand what I am doing wrong. My cone is not working out :( Also when you cut the line into the middle of the circle when do you start overlapping fabric when you use the twist ties? I could not see it clearly. I am not a crafty person. lol. Thanks for your help!
Definitely will show this video to my husband. Been a while since we got rid of our swimming pool, but we do still have horseflies bothering us certain time of the year. Thanks for sharing. You definitely got a thumb up for this video.
At 13:10 he says to mount the funnel inside the tulle. The video is cut off at the top so you can't actually see what he is doing. If you put the funnel on the inside in the jar on the outside how did the flies get through that tool? HELP!
Must be a great design -- experts are participating... Next day after getting it set up -- 3 spiders were setting up shop inside the hoop - 1 inside the jar. ;)
Greatly Thank You for your project!!! I've tried to make one and have a few questions. Is there a ratio on how far the ball is inside the bottom of the hula hoop 'funnel"? and distance from the ground? I have the one I made about 4-5 feet off the ground and the ball is just a couple inches below the hoop. But so far no catch... just wondering if something isn't right
Great question. I should have mentioned that in the video but failed to do it/ Just make sure that part of the ball is inside the rim of the hoop. The flies will typically land on it and walk to the top before taking off and fly up into the trap. about 5 feet is right. I have mine near my pool and keep the ball from the trap at the water level. Wet the ball every so often. the fly will land on it for a drink and you'll get 'em.
Brilliant! Those darn deer Flies just love me and have been driving me crazy! Not to mention I have reactions to the bites. I hope I'll be able to try this for me as well as my animals, my poor mini horse is having an even worse time with them than I am. We tried ziplock bags of water with shiny pennies and that keeps the non biting flies away but not those deer fly.
Mary Ann North Wind Acres Mann give it a try Mary Ann. Put it between the nearest wood line and whatever you want to protect then get ready to empty the jar. I have 2 of them going and rarely see one in my pool these days! Chuck
I’m curious. Does anyone know what size hoop he used ? He doesn’t mention it in the video . They come in different sizes . That’s why , I’m guessing , he mentions the mesh being 42 1/2 inches . I assume that it has to do with the size of the hoop as to what size piece of mesh you use .
No but all I do is get a half gallon of hot water and add 1 1/2 cups of pure cane sugar to it. Mix it up real good then add another half gallon of cold water. Then it’s ready. They love it!
this is a simple trap! great video too thank you. they are trying to sell these on amazon for over $200. do you have a recommendation for how hight to hang these?
I am not sure that the height matters unless you go above 8 to 10 feet up. I have mine with the ball at around 5 feet above the ground. I made tripods to hold them so that I can move them to mow too. Chuck
I am going today to get the stuff. We live on 40 acres live stock but across the street is cattle. They seem to come out when i get in the pool!! I may have to make 4 or 5 of these!!!
I tried this and haven’t caught anything. What am I doing wrong? It’s in some rays of sun but hanging on a large branch so in some shade. It’s a large thing to hang, you have to have some kind of branch for that so can’t totally be in a sunny area.
I have them hanging from tripods made from electrical conduit in full sun. The ones closest to the pool catch enough that I have to empty them every couple of days.
I made a horse fly trap similar to this one except i used plastic. It seems like I am not catching very many horse flies what could some of my problems be? Thanks for any help
Fensterfarm Greenhouse I thought I saw you cut the top off a plastic bottle and use that to guide the flies into the jar. I didn't see you use the funnel.
Fensterfarm Greenhouse thank you. I thought I was paying attention and I missed something. I want to try making this. I am making a smaller version because I don't live near livestock and only have the occasional horsefly. But I still hate him! I'm using a small black basketball, maybe the size that would be for a toddler, and a large embroidery hoop. I think as long as it's the same principle it will work the same way.
I can’t figure out how to hang it in the yard. I made it exactly as stated with a blue ball. I hung on a branch of a dead tree where it got lots of light but only caught a few. I need to bring it closer to the house. Flies are terrible on my porch!
I made a tripod to hold it. I can move it all over the property that way. I have several of them scattered about the property now. Hope that helps? Chuck
Hi! Loved this and thanks for the directions. I followed well but think I'm having placement issues. The horse flies are bugging the horses but aren't getting caught in the trap-- where do you like to put the trap and any other tips if I'm not catching? I have the net and opening and blue ball and all looks like yours. I think it's just where to attract them!
You have to experiment with location. Keep moving the trap around your property until you find the fly zone. Wind can change the optimal position, too. Make 2 or 3 and watch these flies disappear.
Good design but the important stuff is skipped such as how to measure the tulle needed and the zip tying would have been good to see and also the putting the tulle in the jar. You can skip the clipping of zipties
That’s our problem exactly we get bit every time we try to get up the steps of our deck!! My kids have gotten bit now so I’ve drawn the line, trying to figure out what to do, and why are they always around the pool??
I would like to thank you for this video. Last year the horse flys were the worst. I was litterly would stand between two of my horses while they were eating and constantly smacking the horses killing the horse flys. So I have made this a couple of times, first mistake didn't cut the tool round. You can imagine what that looked like. 2nd one I apparently the water bottle was to flimsey and even with the screw it fell right out. Also I wasn't sure how you kept the screen around the jar. Until I watched your video again for maybe the 5th time. That part was a little hidden in your video. Plus when I cut the tool into a circle I made the circle to small and not having much of a cone shape. Well I'm sure I'll get it the 3rd time after all the 3rd time is a charm. Lol. My only dumb question is what is the purpose of cutting the tool from the edge to the middle?
Thanks. I use several of these around my property these days. I cut the tulle from the bottom to the center so that I can create a cone shape with to funnel the flies from the hoop into the jar, Hope that helps? Chuck
ikashibimauler It's not a matter of courage at this point, it's a matter of physical heat tolerance. The temps have been near 100 every day for the past 2 weeks. Construction has stopped until the heat subsides. :-) Chuck
Fensterfarm Greenhouse Oh ya I can hear you. I have been having to work on my cars and it has been a nasty, sweaty ordeal. Gotta love living in the South. Well good luck on all your projects!
We'll...it was good but kind if a letdown. I would have loved to see you got a bunch of flies in a short period of time. After investing 21 minutes into your video I was just looking for that payday! Seeing those nasty things cook would have brought me a lot of satisfaction me 😏Please let me know if your post results 😃
Well done! I recently had my own epic battle with horse flies and caught the whole thing on video... Anyhoo I just wanted to mention that if you use the black zip ties they stand up to UV and sunlight a whole lot better and your trap will last longer. Have a good one.
Thanks for the tip on the zip ties. It turns out that it may not matter too much since the tule (material) doesn't last much longer than a year or 2 so when you replace the tule you have to replace the zip ties. Chuck
Next time around you should consider substituting No-See-um netting like the kind they use on tents. It stands up to sunlight pretty well. www.amazon.com/Mosquito-No-See-Um-Netting-Fabric-Tent/dp/B006ZE4X1W
Great idea, but you didn't have the camera at an angle that enables the viewer to see exactly how you attach the cone to the jar! That's the part I'm having trouble with. Frustrating that I can't see it in the video!
Stephani Guttery sorry about that. Slide the jar rind onto the toule first then work the funnel into the opening at the top of the cone. Underneath the toule so that it presses it between the funnel and the jar when you slide the ring up and screw it to the jar. Hope that helps? Chuck
I am so scared of these things it's sad!!! I can't even enjoy my pool, nor can my kids because they too are scared after seeing me flip out. I have everything to make this first thing tomorrow. do u still have any that bother you before they make their way to trap, or is this something that attracts them right away? I've almost drowned myself because one was circling waiting for me to pop back up. lol its ridiculous
You will probably have a few still make their way to the pool, (depending on the fly population in your area) before they find the traps for a while but at a point they will taper off. Last summer we only saw a few after a weeks worth of the traps deployment. I placed them between the woods and my pool about 20 feet from the pool. I have 2 of them. BTW, you will probably need to replace the "tulle fabric" every year. It gets brittle in the sun. Chuck
They get aggravated when I do anything around the feeders. I have fed then by holding the feeders before so they aren't really afraid of me when I stand still. Movement scares them. Chuck
Thank you! We have horseflies that around our pool. They were just an annoyance until I got a bad bite on my knee. I found this site, spent $20 on supplies and built one with your instructions. 4 different flies came to the pool and all 4 eventually ended up in the trap. This is some great science!

Where do you get the Tulle netting.?
@@dandaly1868 Walmart usually carries it, but any fabric store will have it in stock. (Michaels, hobby lobby, Joanna’s fabrics ect).

Excellent demonstration. Many thanks. I look forward to getting this up and running for when the family comes camping.

Sheer genius! Thank you. Much more affordable version! I just got bit 4 times by those suckers and the war is on!
Glad to help. I have 3 of them right now
Excellent 👍. Thank you 😊👍
I just got but 4 times on my foot and leg. Came in to see what I can do and came across your vide. Thank you for sharing I'm going to try it 😁

God bless!

Love it! Thanks so much for taking the time to show us how. $15.00 is WAY better than $300.00!
Glad to help
You rock my friend. Couldnt ask for a better tutorial, finally some peace and quiet at my pool can be achieved!
I am so glad to help.
God bless!

Colin Hansen OMG,,,I know they dive bomb our heads all summer..I hate horse flies and sweat flies..Ugh,,Hope this works for me too
The March fly season has started here.
Great idea. Make a video of it and tag me. I’ll promote it!
Thanks - love the hummingbirds checking out your work.
I am really impressed Chuck. That is a great design. Well done and I hope you have many hours of unbitten fun in your pool from now on. All the best.
Aaron's allotment Thanks Aaron. All the best to you as well my friend!

Thank you.. for your time and sharing your knowledge on how to fight back!! I hate those pests!!
You are welcome. I am in the process of replacing the material on 2 of mine. They were damaged when my son put them up last year!

You are so right! Just hitting them to the ground doesn't kill them. You have to step on them until they crunch to kill them.

Another reason to get off the back clothing kick that is in fashion and use some color!
Could do with some editing but these things work. Large versions are all over Avondale golf course and jars on top catch thousands of horseflies.
I am definitely making one of these! Very ingenious and I have everything but the hula hoop (which I'm getting today at the dollar store)...
I am in the process of rebuilding 2 of mine. You will periodically have to replace the toule.

Chuck
Yikes!!! I guess that's good :-)
Yeah. every fly that ends up there is one that won't end up in my pool!
Fensterfarm Greenhouse Funny thing, my husband is considering putting up a pool again :-) Well, if he did, that fly trap will be very handy.
My pool would be nothing more that a water trough for biting flies without the traps!

Fensterfarm Greenhouse thank you. I’ll give it a try.

I am going today to get the stuff. We live on 40 acres live stock but across the street is cattle. They seem to come out when i get in the pool!! I may have to make 4 or 5 of these!!!
I have 3 of them around the pool. Remember to empty the jar at the top regularly or it will get really stinky!
Chuck
I tried this and haven’t caught anything. What am I doing wrong? It’s in some rays of sun but hanging on a large branch so in some shade. It’s a large thing to hang, you have to have some kind of branch for that so can’t totally be in a sunny area.
I have them hanging from tripods made from electrical conduit in full sun. The ones closest to the pool catch enough that I have to empty them every couple of days.
Really appreciated. Thanks
I wonder how many of those hummingbirds ended up in that net.
None, is my bet.
I made a horse fly trap similar to this one except i used plastic. It seems like I am not catching very many horse flies what could some of my problems be? Thanks for any help
Change to the netting
Wonderful idea definitely need one of these!
+Pople BackyardFarm it is really a life saver around our place!
Chuck
What size canning jar did you use? Is it the wide mouth version? Thanks. Loved the video!
quart jar
Chuck
This trap can capture stables flys? (stomoxis calcitrans)
I noticed that you have a blue funnel in the equipment you have gathered. But then I didn't see you use the funnel. What is the funnel for?
I cut it to fit inside the jar so the bugs can go in but can't get back out.
Fensterfarm Greenhouse I thought I saw you cut the top off a plastic bottle and use that to guide the flies into the jar. I didn't see you use the funnel.
31waterbaby you are right. My prototype used a funnel for the same purpose. The bottle is much cheaper and worked just as well.
Chuck
Fensterfarm Greenhouse thank you. I thought I was paying attention and I missed something. I want to try making this. I am making a smaller version because I don't live near livestock and only have the occasional horsefly. But I still hate him! I'm using a small black basketball, maybe the size that would be for a toddler, and a large embroidery hoop. I think as long as it's the same principle it will work the same way.
Wasn't paying attention. I can't seem to edit my comment. But anyway. Thanks again.
Yes sir I am making one. Thanks so much.
+Doublenotminer Glad to help rid the planet of these rascles.

Chuck
I don't understand the propose of the slit in the fabric
Where do you get the Tulle netting.?
Walmart in the sewing material area. I also bought some from Michael’s a few years ago. It was cheaper at Walmart though.
Chuck
@@FensterfarmGreenhouse Thank you. I trust it will work well. Logical.
Maybe try a black ball? This will heat up. Horseflies see warmth
You have to experiment with location. Keep moving the trap around your property until you find the fly zone. Wind can change the optimal position, too. Make 2 or 3 and watch these flies disappear.
What is the material you use to wrap around the hula hoop?
Tulle fabric from Walmart or ant fabric shop
Chuck
Are those colibris in the back?
Yes. They love my place.
Chuck
Good design but the important stuff is skipped such as how to measure the tulle needed and the zip tying would have been good to see and also the putting the tulle in the jar. You can skip the clipping of zipties
That’s our problem exactly we get bit every time we try to get up the steps of our deck!! My kids have gotten bit now so I’ve drawn the line, trying to figure out what to do, and why are they always around the pool??
Sarah Holliday they love to be around water especially when persons get wet they’ll bite especially and it feels more painful
Thank you brother.
Very educational. Thank you.
You are very welcome. Help me rid the planet of these varmints.

Cool video, thanks for sharing.
+208 Picker You are very welcome!

Thank you for the tutorial.

I cut the tulle from the bottom to the center so that I can create a cone shape with to funnel the flies from the hoop into the jar,
Hope that helps?
Chuck
Brilliant - thanks so much for posting this !
You gathering up your courage for that greenhouse installation?
ikashibimauler It's not a matter of courage at this point, it's a matter of physical heat tolerance. The temps have been near 100 every day for the past 2 weeks. Construction has stopped until the heat subsides. :-)
Chuck
Fensterfarm Greenhouse Oh ya I can hear you. I have been having to work on my cars and it has been a nasty, sweaty ordeal. Gotta love living in the South. Well good luck on all your projects!
Thank u
Chuck
Very ingenuous of you my friend! Great job on the video also... Oh and the sons music was alright to... Lol 😂😂 Thanks for this....
Thanks so much. My son lives in Japan and teaches English these days.
Chuck
That looks like a great idea. Thanks for your info Love and Subbed.
+nery colon 1 Thank you Nery!
Chuck
I got Bitten by a horse fly last year - not nice. Thank you for explaining how to make a horse fly trap. Best wishes. Patrick
Patrick Meehan Yeah, I have had my share of bites this year Patrick. Give it a go! You will be surprised how many that thing will catch.
Chuck
Wally marts. Put on your sundays best.
Come on kids were going to wal marts.
And get a sodie pop.
Where did you get the net what store
Walmart in the fabric area
Chuck
nice video
HELL YEAH I'M MAKING A COUPLE
I have several as well!
Kill ‘em all!
Chuck
Yeah, but what is the hula hoop for?🤔
After I hula hooped in it for about an hour I used it to funnel the bugs up into the jar!
Chuck
After the season Chuck does the Hula and looses weight
We hate the flies here...thanks for the video!
Give it a try. I must have 20 in there from the last 4 hours.
Chuck
Thank you!
You are welcome!
Chuck
Hope it works well for you :)
It has and still does.

It has and still does.

thank u so much
Jojo was here ❤️
Thanks for stopping by.

The humming birds sound mad.
They get aggravated when I do anything around the feeders. I have fed then by holding the feeders before so they aren't really afraid of me when I stand still. Movement scares them.
Chuck
great video...looks like someone copied your video too.
really? who is that?
Chuck
What is the measurements from the screwdriver to the marker to make your circle on the netting.
42 and a half inches from the screwdriver ti the marker
Chuck
Fensterfarm Greenhouse Does that measurement vary with the size of the Hoola Hoop? If so, what’s the formula?
P.S. My horse thanks you too!
I'm happy to help both of you! lol
I keep 4 of these things on our property in the summer. Keeping the population to a minimum.
