Some of you asked where I did get my ref. and I shared a link for the main ref. but I did a mistake, it's the same model, same photographer but different light setting. Man, when I saw him at the beggining in the process of painting I was like ´´Wow... how many years of experience this level of art may take?´´ then he pulls that chicken and I was like ´´What is that roasted chicken? maybe is an image he pulled in error´´ then on the contrary of my expectations, he did an overlay layer and I was like ´´what?´´ and to make it worse, it looked better after he put that chicken overlay and was like ´´WHAT THE ACTUAL F***?!?´´

Just now I realize what good color palette roasted chicken has, very reddish and earthy with nice dark colors...
The whole painting is gorgeous all around

Yeah, the colors in the photos added a really nice effect and also gave another "level" to the warm mood I wanted (+ the blue of the fire for the second one adds a nice effect that contrasts with the overall warm mood).

I feel the same way. When I began, I thought artists didn't use references and did everything from their imagination. I felt kind of low. And then I discovered that a lot of them just used...a second screen 🥲
But then I discovered Ahmed Aldoori's channel and for the first time a great artist putting his refs on the same screen, it was a revelation 🤯

@@monsterousjigaboo a lot of people are either pirating photoshop or using other programs that arent subscription based (cause adobe policies suck gigass), but a lot of commercial artists are still bound to adobe products because companies only work with them.

This "photobash" technique is well known, especially in the concept art world, but it doesn't seem to be much used in the illustration world (or maybe it is, but artists hide this magic trick! 🤫)

@@RayDrawzDragonz The "trick" is to use an image, manipulate it if needed (smudge tool, level adjustment, opacity mask, etc.) to add interesting textures, colors, shapes to the painting :)

Remember guys using a reference is the best thing to do when starting a artwork. Even a master like this artist needs a reference, what more a beginner? We use reference to learn!

As funny as it is, can you explain the reasoning with the chicken wings? Like why or how you integrated it into the painting?
I like to use images to add interesting colors and color variations, create happy accidents, as well as textures and maybe shapes.
I don't usually care too much about the subject of the photo (as long as it has interesting values, colors and textures), but here I wanted something warm and "related" to the design of the character ("chimera" Falin) which reminded me of chicken ^^' (even if it's actually a dragon body)

Hilarious use of chicken aside, I think including PureRef in the screen recording and showing how you actually used it was a really healthy representation of reference usage in art. Most timelapses don't show this and can give beginners the impression that the artist just pulled all that out of nowhere (not their fault because not everyone wants to include their reference board in the recording, but just nice to see it here)

(for most I don't think they “hide” them but just put them on a second screen to have more space to paint maybe, but I find showing them at the same time as drawing/painting is so helpful for understanding. This has helped me a lot with an artist like Ahmed Aldoori, for example.)

I'm leaving a comment for the algorithm, GREAT ARTWORK! LOVE IT! I like the subtle control of the feather brush, then slowly layering it, after you plotted the light, instead of planning the anatomy of the feathers first before the light. GREAT TECHNIQUE! Yes, I try to focus more on “translating” things with my sense of appeal rather than trying to make them “technically” accurate. It's more of a “suggestion than an "exact statement" :)

I use this technic to create "happy accidents" by adding interesting color variations, tints, texture, shapes, etc. :)
