So I guess the real version wasn’t exciting enough for the producers and writers of the show The Last Kingdom. Still, that is the best mini series I’ve seen in a a long time. Definitely the best out there now. It’s no coincidence that it’s not a product of Hollywood. Doesn’t have enough cheese for Hollywood.
'The real version' has nothing to do with the story. All they share is a name and a home. The show is fairly historically accurate to what we know of the time period. The kings and the big leaders are all real but Uhtred is just fictional and was never intended to be based on a real person. The 'real' Uhtred of Bebbanburg was born about 100 years later but is the ancestor of the author of the books the series is based on and so he took the name and wrote a story set during the time of Alfred the Great. The key events are all real but they have to fill in the gaps in the story. We don't know the name of every person that was alive at that time and took part let alone what kind of person they were.

How about one that explains how Englands monarchies came into existence. Royalty has always baffled me . Because royal families had to have started from average families. 🤔
David Starkey has a collection of documentrys called " Monarchy"..the first one is called "A Nation State.."There are about 7 in total..fascinating watch. X
Away back when, it came down to the sword. You gained land with brute force and grew from there. The whole 'from God' thing was just man-made validation of why they should rule
If You pay attention. One of the kings Uttered help. Was a monk Dream and thats why he was coronated. Im just sick of the power of the church and tall the lies
Royalty and monarchy are strictly tied to how feudalism came about. After the fall of the Roman Empire, citizens gradually fled the cities for the countryside in small communities. The families that founded those shelters gave room to fugitives in exchange for loyalty and part of their produce. As the shelters grew, there was need for protection and those shelters became castles. The leaders of those small kingdoms became kings or marquees or counts, princes, viscounts, queens etc... Slowly though, for one reason or another, these small kingdoms banded together in larger, powerful countries.

The word feud is directly a Saxon word in use today, as are many others. Ironically, the Danish Vikings came from Jutland, now Denmark and were the descendents of the Saxon Jutes 400 years earlier. There would have been a certain commonality of language, thus enabling communication between Saxons and Danes.
Thank you for the great visuals in this video. I was just introduced to Uhtred in a video about Bamburg Castle. It looks like you used lots of illustrations from the great age of storybooks in the late 19th/early 20th century. I'm thinking Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, and the Brandywine School. I'm wondering why that king was sitting on his throne in shallow water on the seashore, however.
The name, Elfgifu was a pretty common name back then. It means gift. Well a gift from someone whom I can't quite recall. But a gift none-the-less. Just FYI
In Gillingham of Dorset is an outskirt called Peacemarsh, where Cnut capitulated to Edmund Ironside after the battle of Penselwood. Ironside chased Cnut to London where Cnut regained his forces, turned round and destroyed Ironside and his army. A lot of history happened round here being close to Shaftesbury and Glastonbury and on the main trading routes between Winchester and the western lands, Gillingham is one of the oldest established towns of England, said that Joseph of Aramuthea once passed through what was a fortified trading town and kings up to Edward the Confessor had their summer hunting lodge underneath where my own flat was built. The town can also boast of Edward Rawson, the Englishman who first started the tradition of the thanksgiving speech over in the American colonies making a speech at the first formal thanksgiving dinner of the colony. Sadly his children all hated the place and one by one either died or came back to Dorset.

Well that means the Uhtred of the Last Kingdom, was a hundred years before his birth..because that story takes place in the mid to late 800s. But then again.. when did Hollywood ever get it right when it came to history... Thanks for this informative video..
The author of the 13 books that the Netflix series are based on, Bernard Cornwell, says uncategorically that The Last Kingdom is FICTION. It is based on a real historical figure, Uhtred, who is Cornwell’s own ancestor. While Alfred, Athelflaed, Edward, Aethelstan, Athelred, Haesten etc are all real characters with real recorded histories, Uhtred’s story was made up by Cornwall.
@@OrientalBallerina Yes.. I understand that now.. I just watched a movie staring David Heming from 1969 called Alexander the Great... and it was totally made up.. I got out of the Navy in 1969 and remember how awful movies were back then... they all had a kind of Hippy Tone to them.. yuck.. haha
This all sounds really interesting and "historical". My question is WHY would they have set the show 100yrs earlier if it was based on him in real life?
so that Bernard could play with the characters of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons probably. and the beginnings of the nordic invasions. really fascinating stuff, i think he conflated a few hundred years to strengthen the story as fiction
@@ehbendisdonc44 Bernard Cornwells 'Last Kingdom', books were out way before the Vikings TV series, if anything they were probably the seed for the Vikings series.

The history will show that Alfred's sword united England, but the history books "...will not show that Alfred would not have done so without the sword of Uhtred..." Hey! Just sayin'...
And Netflix has cancelled this show as well. Season 5 will be the last season which will condense all the remaining 2-3 books in 10 episodes, so get ready to see major time jumps and unfulfillment.
I've read somewhere that for the past 4 seasons they adapted 2 books per season, and that it's gonna be the same for the fifth. Which to me means that maybe they will not ruin the season by rushing the events, but still, they will have to come up with a different ending from the books, which hopefully will be satisfactory. Plus Im not sure Netflix is the actual holder of the series' rights, it could be a situation like The Expanse, where Amazon produces and distributes the series but doesnt own the rights. So if that is the case, it's still possible that the rights' owners will look for other partners to produce more seasons. And if it's not... well, at least they canceled the show giving the writers one more season to write a conclusion, many Netflix shows didnt get that chance
@@pasomatt11 At the time they srted, Cornwell had only written 10 books, so they were going to finish at Season5. Then he wrote 3 more, which mucked them up a bit. They're going to do a film to cover the last 3.
Thats crazy the new netflix show Vikings: Valhalla (which is the sequel to the original Vikings show) takes place with the fictional events of Syven forkbeard and King Aethelred, which you mentioned takes place right after the events of the real life Uthred, who is based off of for The Last Kingdom. Which is my other show I love to to watch on there. Crazy how it comes full circle.
I will have to give viking Valhalla another chance then. I did not like it.. I compared it to The Last Kingdom and was disappointed eventhough I really liked Erik

It's a Netflix show.....based on a book series....
Mini series? It has 4 seasons with a 5th on its way
@@Auryxx_x Much shorter that GOT as S5 is assumed to be the last
@@aishashaikh5466 still not a mini series. A mini series is usually just a few episodes and only 1 season with the aim of telling a small story.
That was a great video! Thank you!

How about one that explains how Englands monarchies came into existence. Royalty has always baffled me . Because royal families had to have started from average families. 🤔
To the best of my knowledge most kings claim decent from a God, except the ones that claim decent from Muhammad, or Ali .
Slowly though, for one reason or another, these small kingdoms banded together in larger, powerful countries.
i think these ancient names from these years are really beautiful and wish they would become modern again.
I love this series! I love hearing Destiny is All!! Great acting by all and Im catching the latest season now ❤️

We'll have to work on some of the pronunciation (I'm just poking fun) but that was a great summary video!

War has always been a part of history. You can look at any place and any time period. Peace can never last forever so long as people remain greedy and ambitious.

Great summarization!! I read a rather lengthy story of this the most renowned Uhtred of the period. Great to know all these historical facts 👏 👍🏻
Wikipedia said "The Unready" comes from "raed" which is advice, and the name would mean "ill advised". Just came to mind and thought I'd mention it.
Well that certainly fits the way he's portrayed in The Last Kingdom. Just about everything Aethelraed(?) does is ill advised.
@@David_Fellner Aethelred of Mercia and Aethelred the Unready are not the same person. Kinda like Cnut, the danish king defeated at Tettenhall and Cnut, king of Denmark, Scandinavia and England are different people.

Great show, Prefer the last kingdom to vikings, mainly as vikings got too big and started following too many people and plots. The last Kingdom really benefits from having fewer main characters. But its so much more rewatchable.
I just want the Final season already.

Thanks for this, it's kinda awesome seeing how much history uhtred really had
The lesson in this is it’s better to die eating to much pie 😂
By far the best show ever
Just FYI

Literally my favorite show.So sad this is the last season
They are making a movie to wrap the show up called seven kings must die
Nice video dude, keep up the good work!
The author of the novels, if I'm remembering correctly, is a descendant of Uhtred.
The author is Bernard Cornwell

it was a BBC drama for 3 series before it was taken over by Netflix
My question is WHY would they have set the show 100yrs earlier if it was based on him in real life?
so that Bernard could play with the characters of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons probably. and the beginnings of the nordic invasions. really fascinating stuff, i think he conflated a few hundred years to strengthen the story as fiction
but i feel like ive heard him answer this in interviews
It is not based on him in real life. It is based on several figures and more events than one figure could have been a part of.
@@ehbendisdonc44 Bernard Cornwells 'Last Kingdom', books were out way before the Vikings TV series, if anything they were probably the seed for the Vikings series.
YES! Less than two weeks now until Uhtred son of Uhtred is back. Can’t wait!
I hardly know anything about England during the middle ages but I'm just going to agree with your speculation that King Sweyn Forkbeard died from eating too much pie.
His name says it all, he shoveled the pies with a fork in the opening in the middle of his beard.

The real Uhtred is not the same as the Uhtred in last kingdom. Uhtred in the last kingdom was alive during Alfred's reign not Aethelred. He's only fictional and isn't based on anyone
