-most of my old videos are unlisted because I'm uncomfortable with people watching and commenting on videos of me looking so different. My Snyder video is unlisted because over time I became unhappy with the finished product of the essay - I think it really got away from talking about how movies communicate ideology and focused too much on Snyder as a person, which was not the intention.

Hey Sophie, I browsed your channel the other day after seeing this premiere upcoming hoping to share another one of your old Volume videos with my dad (he’s pretty heckin left and so’s everyone else in the family it’s great) but I noticed those playlists were all gone. I believe they were titled, from 1 to 3, Time, Validation, and Control respectively? Since they’re no longer on UA-cam, could I find these someplace else?

From the awful antisemitic attacks against my home as a child & almost every synagogue I've belonged to, kids in school bullying me as the only Jew in school in a very Xstian town, to my friends making "jokes", to all political circles, to every space online at the moment...it's just still everywhere in our world & as Jews we've been taught/expected to not bring attention to ourselves & never to respond.

And the british empire is now part of 'the west', its the bs voice of the west ... listen to them defend you know who, and the big bullies too, and nazis in ukraine ... they are the voice of the empire, maybe not the controlling faction, or maybe they are ...
'The west' is, at least partly, a zorg (adjusted to aoid a dumb machine censorship*) empire
      Its complicated
But this lie is part of their propaganda
e.g. a posh guy questions stab safety, and he's accused of we-all-know-what .... because of exactly the corporate mantra you repeated ... questionning imperial media and corporate politics is supposedly antisemitic ... same excuse used to get rid of Corbyn and old lefties from the now re-poshed and re-pretentioused re-blairitised labour (still mnot as zorg as the serving-the-con 'party' party, but zorg-tolerant and zorg-defending nonetheless) ...

Also if you know her parents, her romantic partner, or any other trusted people in her close circle it would be good to alert them, again if at all possible. She may get angry at you for that action but ultimately having more eyes on her is a better thing at this time.

It literally doesn't sound far fetched at all. Part of COINTELPRO was creating anarchist 'zines which could be used to say "both sides bad" for Vietnam and such. It was called The Workshop:
In internal documents, the FBI stressed that “the publisher and the writers should be strictly anarchist.” Why? Because the cops recognized that “the anarchist position could take any direction, such as an attack on Vietnam policies as well as an attack on the Soviets in Czechoslovakia.”
“The anarchists point of view is the most disruptive element in the New Left and should be capitalized on in the most confusing ways,” the feds added.
The FBI recognized that anarchist ideology could be used to de-politicize the leftist struggle, writing that the publication would “reach wider circulation if it were not so political as to be tied to dogma such as the line of MAO or CHE GUEVARA.”
The FBI also planned to use the anarchist newspaper to attack leftist Black nationalist and pan-Africanist leaders, singling out Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture)."

I definitely agree with that emotional aspect of conspiracy theories. I'm a trans guy, however I've got a pretty bad case of OCD, though I've been improving lately. Occasionally when things get difficult to deal with and the compulsions aren't enough, I begin having seasons of overactive paranoia, which leads to conspiracy theories. After I'd come out as trans I was dealing with a lot of negative backlash and (legitimate) gaslighting from family members and others around me. Most of the people doing this were women, who refused to allow me an identity outside of my biology. so because I couldn't emotionally deal with it I started obsessing over this idea that women aren't actually real, and it's some fake bioengineering created by a pseudo patriarchy. I never told anyone about this, because I was aware this idea was delusional and it lead me to think in a very misogynistic way about the women around me, and I knew that was harmful. and it was unhealthy because while the idea was based on pre-existing oppression of trans people and women, I'd altered it so that it only benefitted me, and no one else.

By convincing UFO researchers that what they were seeing weren’t spy plane tests but alien landings they hoped to push these people into mental breakdowns and discredit their observations to the public.

I first got on breadtube back when Natalie was making vids about The Golden One and pouring milk on herself in the bathtub. I probably watched every single video that ever dunked on Ben Shapiro, every single hour long in-depth suddenly Marxist video game analysis, and every single eyeball zone 👀. And then after Philosophy Tube made that awesome coming out video, I stopped watching UA-cam until recently because I moved and changed jobs and couldn’t watch hour long UA-cam videos on the clock ☠️

In all my time on "breadtube", trying to learn what it means to think critically, and all that good stuff (and there have been so many creators who have helped me navigate that journey), there's always been this gnawing idea in the back of my head that there's something missing in the way that that same critical eye is or isn't turned inward in these leftist spheres, that there's something so similar in the experience of validation and "wokeness" in breaking things down critically, and the experience of conspiracy believers on the right and how yet they're different. But I could never articulate that idea without feeling like I might lose my grounding on all these values that have come to be so important to me in my politics. I finally feel like I have the language to engage with those ideas. Thank you for this video Sophie! So grateful !

@1:12:00 As a Jewish person from Europe I think it is incredibly important to say that there WAS a disproportionate amount of Jewish representation in those who were economically successful, especially in the banking sector (See Windolf, 2011, published in the Geman Journal of Business History). In short, Jewish people made up some 14-16% of the banking sector from 1914-1928, but made up less than 1% of the German population. This would be described as "disproportionate".
The point that people who are anti-semitic make is that this disproportionate representation somehow justifies enacting harm on Jewish people. Obviously, anyone who is not a bigot understands that this is NOT sensible. The same way that black people commit a disproportionate level of crime in the USA is NOT a good justification for discriminating based on skin colour. The point is, there are likely socio-economic factors at play that lead to the disproportionate representation in certain social roles. Understanding that these socio-economic factors existed and that they lead to disproportionate outcomes is important to understand how it is the grain of truth that underlies Nazi ideology (i.e., that Jewish people are over-represented in certain roles) is then twisted into horrible misinterpretations (that Jewish people are somehow conspiring against the German state by taking powerful positions). Racists in the USA use the same misstep in logic. There is a grain of truth (black people are over-represented in crime statistics), but they then make horrible misinterpretations (they believe that black people are naturally more "crimey" or whatever).
It is so important not to pretend that the "grain of truth" part isn't denied, because that only gives credence to racists/anti-semites. It makes those they speak to able to think "Wow, I didn't realise that [gain of truth] was true... I guess [misinterpretion] might also be true!" As someone who doesn't want people to be bigoted, we mustn't let that happen. By claiming that what Vaush said was "categorically untrue", you open the door to bigots trying to 'red pill' people, or whatever it is they call it these days.

    • @SarahCharles92
      @SarahCharles92 2 роки тому +42

@@macmcskullface1004 But the point made was that they did have disproportionate presence in the sector. I specifically said that this nugget of truth is what is used by anti-semites to then make further statements (e.g., they claim that this disproportionate presence also implies disproportionate control, which is then further morphed into 'Jews control the banks')
My point is that it is important to acknowledge the underlying fact (there was a disproportionate presence of Jewish people in the private banking sector) without then agreeing with the framing that this is because they had control.
The same way that black people in the USA do, factually, commit a disproportionate amount of crime. The point I am getting at is that this should not mean we accept the framing that this is because black people are more "crimey" by nature.
The vital thing is to acknowledge that what we see are *outcomes* of socioeconomic factors (e.g., Jewish people were pushed into the banking sector by Christian countries in the pre-1900 era due to limits on lending placed on Christians and Muslims, or black people were pushed into poverty by the USA and poverty is linked to crime)

    This video is *so good*.
Also want to add some context about the usury thing: Jews were often forced into the role of pawn shop owners (because few other jobs being available) during the middle ages because religious law dictated that usury was illegal between Jews but not to others and Christians thought themselves too pure for that. They could only lend small amounts of money for fixed interest rates (usually amounting to around $50 in the modern day for like 3% or something like that. The limit during much of 16th century Venice, for example was 3-5 ducats). Between this and the collapse of the Vatican bank (yup, the church used to have a bank), and the wealthy Jews who were often forced by ruling/feudal families to lend large sums on behalf of wars, the Rothschilds in particular but the Jews at large were characterized as a conniving, banking people in Europe.
Antisemitism as a rule is the socialism of fools. It's the 1%'s way of moving the blame for their actions to a third party. As a professor of mine used to say, an annual pogrom keeps the Jews in check and the peasants from revolting (because you gave them the catharsis of destroying someone without it being you, the rich person). This means that Jews, on a population-level, are often given jobs that are the faces of power with no real teeth behind them: teachers but not admin, social workers, doctors, lawyers but not lawmakers. It also means that Jews, again on a population level, are afforded a level of success in most places they live that other minority groups are not (because if they weren't, the rich couldn't use us as a smokescreen. The story has to at least seem plausible.)
Also, the whole tail wagging the dog thing re:Israel is so common on the left that it's driven a lot of Jews who would otherwise be up to their elbows in leftist thought/organizing to be driven out early. I know what people mean 70% of the time when they say "Zionists". Jews were a key part of the anarcho-syndicalist movement in the US and there are so many Jews who are pushed out of leftist spaces because we are so tired of the casual antisemitism carried out especially by the conspiracy left, but also by the community at large. Many of us still participate, but the community as a whole needs to deal with its antisemitism and look at it seriously because it's a serious issue *and* it weakens us to keep it uninterrogated.

Also, the no Marxism in Israel thing is so fucking funny because the ruling party of Israel for the majority of its early existence, MAPAI, was the literal alliance of socialist parties. It was disolved for a plethora of reasons, but Israel has. However, MAPAI was racist as hell, so a majority of the Mizrachi Jews in Israel are right-wing because the right embraced them after they were mistreated by MAPAI.

When if he'd actually taken the subject- and his audience- seriously he could have done an expose of how private funding of the EPA results in the power of that organisation being watered down so much that when a red flag is raised they'll take the word of the corporations over the whistleblower. If anyone is interested, look up Tyrone Hayes, he's the guy who first raised the alarm about the water contamination.

If Jones had done any of that, though, the only rational response would be some kind of oversight or regulation, both things he claims to hate. He's in a lose-lose situation for any result other than grabbing attention for himself.

My thoughts when Caleb Maupin came up "Oh, that's the guy Thought Slime had a brief beef with, and other creators are making voices, I wonder if Thought Slime will do his voice. Does Sophie know Thought Slime?" Then immediately "Sophie has a whole series as a guest in Thought Slime's channel, how did I not remember that? She plugged this video in that series! I'm an idiot"

Such an important video right now, thank you, Sophie. I am an immigrant from post soviet space and I've found myself belonging in leftist spaces. But right now I find many leftists who have no idea what our countries are like, our history, our politicians, our societal issues, not only falling for blatant kremlin propaganda, but also gleefully cheering for an imperialist war lead by an authoritarian monster whose country is quickly becoming a fascist police state. It hurts so much and I now realise that basic compassion and empathy is not a precondition of the left, either. I feel like binaries never work.
