    When the wachowski sisters came out as trans I became aware of the allegories in The matrix movies on the surface level.
    This is the first time I'm hearing the take of someone who actually lives the trans life go in depth about these movies, and they truly go deeper than I ever could have imagined.
    I had no idea about the teenage suicide attempt, and the way you overlaid those words on the scene where neo is almost killed by the train but survives when he affirms his identity, you brought tears to my eyes.

    • @stylis666
      @stylis666 2 роки тому +11

      _"When the wachowski sisters came out as trans I became aware of the allegories in The matrix movies on the surface level."_
      Yep, I thought, sure, maybe on a very superficial level.
      Shows what I know, very little, maybe on a very superficial level.
      Also, having just that superficial level of understanding, the final dialogue of the 4th movie make me break up in tears and I'm super happy they made it - the series I mean -, even though it completely flew over my head until the final scene, as all the movies did.
      I'm totally blind to anything metaphorical or symbolic in movies unless a character is literally named after some ancient thing I vaguely remember like Solomon's Key in Locke & Key. I forgot the character, it's in the only season worth watching, the first one. The kid that killed the father is called Simon solomon or some obvious shit like that, so in the first episode I googled Solomon's Key and figured out that there were gonna be spirits summoned or some shit like that and I was right for once in my life XD
      So this video is pretty much a revelation about all the things I still missed in the Matrix movies after having watched them a gazillion times and having seen them in very different way at different times in my life.
      Anyway, as a cis hetero white guy I am very happy with this video explaining in such a fun way what I didn't see and couldn't, even though I was told it was there. I get the prison for you mind, but I have no idea what it is to live life being a trans person and now I know a tiny bit more. And I also loved the movies, obviously, so I feel totally vindicated in loving them and thinking they're actually good. And they just got a lot better.
      I never got the fascism thing either. I obviously noticed it when Neo got picked up the first movie, but I thought Smith just got weaker over time, completely forgetting how fascism works and what I am complaining about and what I criticize when arguing with fascists. Maybe I just block the memory of it to enjoy the movie more and end up hating Smith more because he gets more dumb and annoying over time. Realizing now it's inevitable with so much irony in such a stupid ideology and I see it happening with people every fucking day, I should really watch the movies again.
      They really were way ahead of their time.

    For the "movie mistakes" like light reflection on smith glasses and all, there an intresting analysis by french youtuber and movie reviewer "Durendal" who notice that all of those "mistakes"... always happen when the scene talk about control... like... all of them... there no movie mistake like that when Neo talk about his favourite restaurant or when Link look at his Lucky Charm. So yeah, you're not the only one to see this as a purposely choice, and seeing how recurent in specific scene it happen, it's probably true.

      To further support this point, there are other videos that talk about the hidden themes of The Matrix movies including that they are an allegory about "The Cave" story where people were imprisoned in a cave where they thought their whole reality was watching shadows that were living on the walls in the cave but it was really just actors holding up objects so that the sun would cast shadows into the cave to look like things like creatures moving etc, and eventually one of the prisoners escapes and sees the play being acted out and then sees reality for the first time, then has trouble with seeing because the prisoner has been in a dark cave his or her whole life and is now just seeing the light from the sun for the first time (I hope I explained that right). It could be argued then that the Agent Smith sunglasses thing was more symbolism about The Cave from the Wachowskis to further communicate in a somewhat subtle way that we are not free, as Agent Smith said to Neo, and that we need to escape from the prison of our minds and see the "movie" being played behind us for what it truly is.

      Also, it is quite a masculine name. I mean, literally, considering its suffix and etymological roots. It could just mean a play with some sort of messianic title, like "the son of man", but in that case, it doesn't make sense for Neo to renounce it. It is possibly a nod to a "manly man dudebro" connotation. Meanwhile, Neo is just "nah, I'm something entirely new". (I'm probably overanalyzing it, but it's my headcanon now).

      I also love how it emphasizes the way in which bureaucracy plays an explicit part both in literally making people act according to the law, but also on a more ideological level. The 'Mister Anderson' can easily be read just as 'corporate talk' or Smith just being a carreerman (which is a large part of his personality in the first movie), but also subtly shows how these things that we interpret as being silly corporate or police things actually enforce a gendered patriarchical world.

    In the bit about the right co-opting anti-fascist media reminds me of the situation of They Live. A distinctly anti-capitalist, anti-fascist, anti-Regan film that the fascists love to read as anti-Semitic. Director John Carpenter hates this take and sees it as a distinct misunderstanding of the film.

      So if it's about Class why are the Aliens a different Race?

    • @NovastarDoughnut
      @NovastarDoughnut Рік тому +13

      @@universome511 well because it's kind of a mixed metaphor. Metaphors in film especially fantasy amd scifi are always a mixed bag. It's the trouble with mutants in the XMen or predators in zootropalis. In the universe of xmen yeah it's kinda justifiable that humans might be scared of mutants when they can shoot fireworks out their hands, change memories with telepathy, shoot concussive blasts out their eyes, litterally control all metal ect. And in zootropolis its justified why prey would be kinda wairy around predators when the litteral only thing they eat is you, or a substitute for you.
      In these stories that are clearly about racial/queer (in the case of xmen) oppression they need to justify why that bias exists. In our world however the reasons for these biases aren't as justified or understandable. Our worlds oppression is built off traditionalism and wanting to go back to a better time that never was. It's not that queer or black people really pose a threat in the same way that the Xmen or predators do for their society. Its that reactionaries and people opposed to change are terrified and choose to spread bigotry and try to keep things as is because adapting to changing times is scary.
      I think the point was that the main characters and the people at the top, the rich, the bourgeoisie are on such different levels that they might as well be a different species. That the existance of the working class the rich 1% are so different that to the working class, to Nada, a drifter whose name litterally means nothing, to someone who is a no-one who live paycheck to paycheck or don't know where their next meal comes from, the life of the rich is completely and utterly alien. the police and the media exist for the benefit of the people Nada lives under the boot heel of. A majority of the cops within the film are the aliens and their job is to protect the private property (like the bank that nada attacks) and attack the poor communities. Meanwhile The media is selling a luxurious lifestyle filled with hidden propaganda to keep you unaware and consuming, not thinking about what the media consumed means or the implications of it but simply consuming and purchasing what is marketed to you.

    Most people I know didn't get why Smith exploded at the end. Sure they had ideas for the metaphors but not the mechanics.
    Smith avoided deleation because he cut himself off from the source, finding his power in isolation. When Neo goes to fight Smith he does so by connecting directly to the source. When Smith takes him over he is reconnected to the source through Neo and the Source is able to delete him.
    I think it still very much adds to the metaphors.

    • @travisbewley7084
      @travisbewley7084 3 роки тому +21

      @@itgaam I'm not exactly sure about that point but Neo was made differently then the others. Smith Literally says he became unplugged because of Neo that that allowed him to disobey.
      All I know is the cinematography and cuts really imply this. You get reaction shots from Neo in the real world and the source face thing.
      You see the Neo smith standing there, then a cut to Neo and the Source sends a shock through the wires, then a cut to the Neo Smith twitching. Then you see the wires plugged into Neo Light up bright white before Neo then lights up bright white, implying that it came from the source. The white light spreads from the cables connected to Neo, into him and then the light starts to appear form behind the Smith Neo's glasses.
      I think if you slow down the action here it's telling a clear story.

    • @matttriano

      Wasn't this the clinch pin for the "Agent Smith is the One" theories?
      That theory in general has a lot of beautiful symbolism to it that I already went over in a different comment, but to be brief; it assumes the metaphor of removing that side of oneself that demands to adhere to the norms of a toxic society, and taken too far demands it of everyone else as well.

  • @MJFERMEZLA
    @MJFERMEZLA 3 роки тому +87

    I too got the "Agent Smith is a fascist" meaning, but I got two others reasons for his final defeat, not more or less valid, that's why the Washoski keept it vague, so we can see all kind of meaning in it :
    - Like your said, despite being a Smith, people still have their "cookies", their personnality, their identity. Neo understand that when Smith talk like the oracle, so he let himself becoming part of this fascist system... and his cookies, those of a hacker and rebelious anarchist, destroy him from the inside. Almost kind of meta, because the movie have an anti-capitalist message will their distribution participate to the capitalist society with product placement and all... but like Neo, they go to this system to destroy it from the inside, will the "agents" don't understad what is happening... like the agent from this powerade commercial.
    - Fascism exist thanks to one single tactic... "antagonisation". They take a "other" and use it to make it the threat to liberty of our race or something, so we fight him, and destroy our liberty and individuality to vanquish this "other". But once the "other" is dead... fascism still need someone to fight for justifying his existence... so he fight against itself, against others who was behind him, and them, destroy itself. That's why Fascism is a looser ideology and why Smith loose, because he vanquish his "other"... but now he had no reasons to exist.

    To expand on the "Neo knows it's a movie" concept, I think it explains the biggest surface plot hole of the sequels, which is Neo having superpowers in the real world and not just in the Matrix. But here's the thing - that superpower is only the power to be heard. He can't use it to Deus Ex Machina everything, he can only use it to get to the position to talk to the machine baby head directly. Because a movie star can't do anything much in the real world either, but they have a rare ability to disseminate an idea.
    I've always loved the sequels because they end in a uneasy negotiated settlement with the powers-that-be, which is far more meaningful than the standard action movie defeat-the-single-point-of-failure ending of the first Matrix.

    On the discussion of Agent Smith's sunglasses, the way his lenses reflect both Neo the lights, but how Neo's reflect nothing, it feels like it's trying to suggest that Agent Smith's worldview can't account for the existence of Neo and a reality outside of their ideological one. These observations literally bounce off the lenses Smith uses to analyze the world.

    One interesting element of the whole 'Neo's choices are predetermined for him' thing is if you take into account the initial red/blue pill choice. This is technically also a choice that the Oracle forces Neo into because she's the reason Morpheus seeks him out in the first place.
    Now you could see this in terms of 'well it's all pointless because the machines are behind Neo taking the red pill in the first place', but this doesn't really jive with how he breaks out of their manufactured consent later on in the films. I think you can see it as 'there is something inherent to Neo's being that makes him a redpiller regardless of whether he ever had a choice to take the red pill in the first place'.
    Neo will always be redpilled, or anticapitalist, or trans, or queer, or whatever metaphor you like the most. Even if he goes back to where he was at the very start of the first film he will still know something isn't right. Hell we know this to be true based off the new trailer where we see him taking blue pills but there's still this sense that he knows he's just lying to himself about some reality bending truth that he refuses to see.
    It's the notion that no matter what, the second you start to even get bad vibes about our systems whether they be capitalism, gender conformity, heteronormativity, etc you can never get rid of those vibes, and those vibes will eventually see to the destruction of these oppressive systems regardless. It's the hope that everyone has in 'the One'. Or the idea that even when the fascist agents kill every single opponent to them a new generation of queer people will always be born to undermine their system.
    Btw this interpretation of the whole 'the red/blue pill choice is predetermined by the Oracle' thing is pretty cool given that estrogen pills used to be red, but they're now blue. It's also sort of funny when you consider that to transphobic fascists taking estrogen is 'bluepilled'. Then the rebuttal becomes, so what? At least trans people are more honest with themselves than you are lol. The idea is that regardless of what choice we make these inherent truths about humanity and our societies about our gender, our sexualities, our relations to the means of production, etc will never go away even if we choose to ignore them.

      It's the one part of the analysis that I have an issue with really. You can certainly say they were *meant* to be one movie, and the themes and storylines work that way, but they weren't. The imagined fusion works great, but we never got that fusion, we got two awkward lacklustre films, and even if you watch them back to back you then instead have one single 4.5 hr movie with terrible pacing.
      I'll admit 'The imaginary redesign of the matrix sequels as one single movie is good, actually' doesn't really have the same zing as a title though.

      It was honestly the same for me too. I first watched these films separately early last year, and didn't care for the sequels at all (in fact, I was disproportionately harsh on Revolutions in particular). I rewatched them recently in preparation for Resurrections, but this time I watched the sequels hours apart as opposed to days, and found a lot more enjoyment out of them. I still have issues with them vis a vis the pacing, the structure, the overly expository and pretentious dialogue in Reloaded, the overlong action scenes in Revolutions, the general dead weight that is Zion. But I came away with a greater understanding of what the Wachowski sisters were trying to accomplish, and by extension a lot more respect and satisfaction for these films

The program didn't know what was happening when these seemingly human bodies that are thousands of times more durable than concrete smashed into each other so it's best estimate was that those sounds worked for the situation. Brilliant, actually.

    I’m only 27 minutes in, but that breakdown of the trans allegory leading into her near attempt in front of the train (please no pun intended) just hit me so hard.
    I’m enby. Still figuring it out, but I’m feeling bigender for now (she/her or he/him). Today was my first time going out to buy femme clothes. Seeing myself wearing clothes that fit me in a way others never have is a feeling I can’t describe, but the closest I’ve ever seen is the Wachowski’s speech you quoted. Seeing someone I can be, feeling seen, I don’t know how to put it.
    I haven’t finished this video yet, but it’s already done more for me than I know how to process. Thank y’all for your work.

    When Neo inserts himself into Smith, Smith learns from Neo; not how to free himself of the system in order to fight against it, but how to free himself of the system in order to *gain control of it*. Smith takes control of the system, becoming a full blown fascist, and spreads his fascism across the entire population. In the end, everything is Smith, everyone is fascist, except Neo. Neo loses because he can't win, there's nobody to save; the battle is already lost in that sense... and this would be the case if Smith simply left Neo defeated, isolated, and turned Neo into a forever-enemy to keep the fascist dream alive. But Smith thinks he should eradicate Neo. This would be Fascism's downfall; fascism requires an enemy to unify against, and once that threat is gone there's nothing to fight. Yet Smith is prideful and doesn't just eliminate Neo, he tries to transform Neo into Smith, he tries to transform revolution into a fascism. Reactionaries successfully co-opt the symbology of the revolution constantly, but to attempt to transform the very essence of revolution, equality and freedom and queerness into fascism... that's thesis and antithesis. And so, when Smith tries to transform Neo... Neo and Smith are transformed, through dialectics, into a new synthesis, reconciling the extremes. We don't know what this new synthesis is. Radical Centrism? Third Way? Who knows... Maybe we might get to see a glimpse of that in Matrix 4.

    I think what I've noticed upon a recent-ish rewatch about a year or two ago is that although the first film is punchier and very well put together, the sequels attempt and try to expand on the thematic premise and contradictions in the first film in a way that is necessary albeit imperfect.
    I can understand people being underwhelmed by the pacing choices, or that were looking for some sort of exact experience of being "mindblown" in the exact same way (see the numerous people convinced we were going to get a "the real world is also a simulation and when Neo wakes up from that shit is going to really get real" but if you were looking at how things work thematically the way the narrative turns is one of the more honest look at how dissent and unrest is channeled into a revolution (uprising) that is ultimately a revolution (full circle) by the powers that be (the Architect and the Oracle).
    Still some of the action scenes in 2 and 3 could have done with some room on the cutting floor IMO lol. Weirdly it was the fighting that started to drag for me when I rewatched.

      Well, probably a lot of people expected the sequels to expand on the worldbuilding... which, I think it's something we only see on Animatrix.
      One of the most weird pieces of media related to Matrix is a SHORT story made by Neil Gaiman... basicaly, a human in the Matrix is awaken by the machines to fight aliens with a spaceship... so yeah... worldbuilding wasn't a big priority.

    I'm listening to Blow Back podcast today about Cuba. In episode 3 around the 29:15 mark they interview a lady who was in the middle class and was in a Catholic School. She remarked one of the things that helped her radicalization was that after the revolutionaries won, there was no homeless people on the street. While the Catholic Church only had donations and charities to give.
    That totally reminded of the thing I learned from this this video around the 1:02:45 mark.
