- This is my epilogue to the Attack on Titan Colossal Review. These are my thoughts on a series I've been in love with for the last 8 years! Special thanks to AnimeAjay for this week's script!
This is possibly my final video on Attack on Titan, and it's through my review of its final installment. Chapter 139, Toward the Tree on that Hill. Poor Mikasa, poor Levi, Poor Armin... I hope you all enjoy the video and I hope you can appreciate our point of view!

I never thought I would see Levi cry again since the ‘no regrets’ OVA...
Even tho i didn't like the ending that scene was done really well
It’s such a good way to wrap it up for him, and it’s nice to see some old faces too
It is until you realize he fought alongside the people who killed basically everyone who showed up and got no repercussions for it.
its an excellent scene but it should had been a deaths scene, he got the Might Guy treatment
It's ironic that the world in AOT almost ended up becoming the world it was supposed to be at the beginning of the manga: a world in which all people outside the walls were exterminated by the titans.
And Eren accomplished the goal he had in the beginning of eradicating all Titans.

More than it is ironic, I think it's thematically appropriate and somewhat foreshadowed.
What Eren and Armin always wanted was a world they could be free to explore and build upon with their own wills and dreams. By the end it's as if they've crafted that world themselves, but at a huge cost. They had to enact their own lived nightmare in order to reach their true goals, though Eren clearly is the one with greater agency.

wait... how the hell did eren never make contact with historia in any way before?
Isayama has said that the Anime is the definitive version and has used the medium to correct things he didn't like about the way the story was presented in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if he took the chance to let the ending breathe more in its anime form as well. That would clear up many of the issues, especially the ones you talked about here.
What sucks is how they messed up episode 1 on Eren's dream, so it's a bit hard to digest. I do wish the best for the anime, though.
Dont know how i feel about that cause it seems to have excluded the "see you later" scene and even mikasas characterization to an extent. I guess any newcomers should consume both the anime and manga for the full experience

AOT was a 7/10 not because of the ending because it always was one.
chill man, there are a ton of stories better than AOT, you'll probably read many more in your lifetime, this was honestly good but only above mediocre for me but I've read many novels with a better plot and conclusion, its nothing THAT special.
My man Erwin couldn't even get his missing arm back in the afterlife, he was the only one saluting with the left 😂
It was kind-of also metaphorical. His freedom had caused him to lose his right hand. Note that: RIGHT. From when he started realising the flaws of the OG government, he started saluting with his left hand. His deviant hand. Even in death, he still knows that the world is very flawed, and the only truth is to deviate.

The pacing in the anime between armin and erin fixed so much of this. I watched it without any spoilers. It hit really hard. They added extra dialogue letting the conversation breathe a little.
Yup! I feel the same way.
I saw someone point out in the final scene of the boy walking up to Eren's great tree, the boy exploring the hollow has a dog with him, and presumably goes into it willingly. While Ymir was chased by dogs and on the verge of death. The idea being that even if things repeat, maybe the ultimate fate of the cycle of violence is these minor differences that might mean the curses of the world we leave behind are just a bit better than what we had to fight in our time.
Exactly. It's possible even if the boy does make contact with the worm, it won't create titans. When Ymir fell into the tree, she was focused on only one thing, survival at all costs. So the worm gave her the power to do so, to become bigger, stronger, and have an undying body. The boy on the other hand is seemingly an explorer, driven by curiosity. So the worm could create something entirely different in response to him.
This is HUGE cope. The ending makes the entire story pointless. Just accept it.
@angstyteen6042 the ending is melancholic, I'd still like it even if I didn't think the overall message was about the faint glimmer of hope that we can make things better. Just thought the mirroring of the story was cool and that the differences between Ymir and the boy were interesting.

@angstyteen6042 I am a sucker for ending stories where they started, gives a nice bookend feeling to things. But I also find the overall narrative of the cycle of violence compelling, as well as the idea of Eren being a slave to his nature and childhood trauma. As far as story structure goes, I consider the rumbling as the real climax to the story and everything that follows as a falling action that ties things together. I do think there are legitimate criticisms (especially of the manga ending) but I still can't help but be deeply moved by the story and its ending.
I like to think that one of the reasons why Eren freaked out at the end of the Liberio raid when Sasha died was because he realized that she HAD to, that there was no possibility to actually save her. She was doomed to die regardless of what he did.

Funnily enough, this would actually make sense irl as well, since Isayama had planned to kill Sasha much earlier but his editor thought she should live. She got to escape death then, but she was always meant to die

Stupid theory, Eren shouldve know years prior if we are going with this "oh eren was omnipotent" bullshit. This ending was garbage in both direction and execution.

Isayama probably will instruct Mappa to extend the scenes to make it more sense in the end. That or make the dialogue make more sense for those who thought wtf was going on in the final chapter
Knowing the homage, he will ask them to make the Eren crying about Mikasa finding another guy scene even more funny. Cause that, that was 100% the plan since the final arc. Isayama loves his Gundam/Mecha
@@dekaidoku true, they probably will! The same applies to Armin's reaction: "thank you for becoming a mass murderer for us" will probably be extended to a certain degree for the sentence to be in character for Armin. Im happy with the ending but it sounded so out of character lol

Erwins speech about them not being forgotten hits hard when you see Jean connie and levi looking at all the people that died along the way. They wont be forgotten. Not by those who still live on and can remember their sacrifice

Im really glad they beefed up the dialogue and pacing in the anime. I felt it nailed almost everything Iseyama was going for

Yup the animation, voicing, music and everything just felt more in the anime finale.
The main reason I think the chapter was rushed was just because Isayama was exhausted beyond measure. As he said, he was too tired to feel sad or miserable while finishing the chapter, which fair enough, he has been doing this nonstop for 10 to 11 years.
Damn. So he was suffering from fatigue just like Togashi with Yu Yu Hakusho. It ended perfectly but it stumbled a little...
Also I think he said something about it being symbolic ending on chapter 139. 13 years representing the curse of Ymir, and the 9 representing the 9 Titans. While symbolism is cool and all, I’d rather see a chapter 140 or at least a longer 139 and see all of the points further elaborated like Mark said

I think the most ironic thing about Eren is that although he fought and strives for Freedom, he himself was never free. Forever bound to a single path that would lead his people to salvation, but never him.

He truly never was free, even if you took the whole time memories thingy, he was fated to die in 4 years and he never had a break ever since the colossal appeared in the first chapter. Damn
That's why AOT ended on the chapter it did. 140 means freedom. He never achieved it
@Who Am i well he is a slave to himself in a way, he was just following memories, but those were still HIS memories, of things he would eventually do, the chapter reinforces this when Eren states that even if he never knew about his friends stopping him, he would have continued the rumbling anyway, seeking freedom, but this still hurts him because he's well aware that what he's doing is wrong, and that the people he would kill, are innocent. The fact that he even influenced the past, forcing Grisha to give him the Attack titanz and allowing Dina to eat his own mother, setting things into motion hammers all of this down even more.
In way , being dead was his only way to be free.
All of this being said, MAAPA's ending (as long as they follow the story) could fix the pacing problems of the last chapter cinematically.
OR use the akatsuki no requiem ending instead!

@@LuisSierra42Nah the Anime really did help clear things up a lot. I think many manga readers never really understood the nuances of the ending until they saw it animated (if course, many people had already made up their minds to hate it no matter what, unfortunately)
@@Sir_TophamHatt I think that if they had done one episode dedicated to Ymir + Fritz, one dedicated to the Mikasa + Eren memory and one with Eren + Armin, nobody would complain. I can completely understand the ending but other people felt betrayed by it
For me personally, AoT had a 7/10 ending but was a 10/10 series. Definitely had some issues with the final chapter of Attack of Titan (such as Ymir's Stockholm Syndrome and the reversal of Connie/Jean/Gabi's fate) but overall, I'm VERY satisfied and feel like I got what I wanted for the most part. The end of an era. PS: You're totally right on in your analysis of AoT's perception of time (it's very similar to the movie Arrival)
Ymir’s Stockholm syndrome makes sense though considering she was born a slave girl and the only time she was shown praise was when she acted subservient like a slave. She mistook that for love because that’s all she knew it to be.
Jean, Connie and Levi surviving everything is the sweet part of the ending. Everything else leaves a bitter aftertaste, but that's exactly what I signed up for

I don't understand why the reversal of Connie/Jean/Gabi is an issue. Personally, that was one of the best parts of the chapter for me. They never died, all they did was became mindless titans. If an eldian can turn into a titan, it's only natural for them to return to being a human once the power of titans is removed.
I REALLY hope MAPPA is given the chance to stretch this chapter out to make it more digestible and give it room to breath. You put it into perfect words what this chapter suffers from and I really believe that if given the chance, MAPPA can really bring out the potential of this chapter and see that it’s cooked and ready.

it is deus ex machina problem, if u want to introduce a "time travel" and almighty power, you have to prepare how the power works and must consistent enough to make reader believe it. you know the story is bad when u r comparing the series with avenger story for an excuse.

@@ixiryr2315 I don't see it being a Deus Ex Machina. Time has been a part of AoT since the chapter where Eren kissed Historias hand. & even before when Grisha talked to Kruger. The problem was that it wasn't explained. Eren just dropped this info on us and refused to elaborate, presumably because Isayama had no time to do so

And about ymir, if ymir can do anything to eldian including removing titan curse, why king fritz who want peace didn't do that? Ymir is still a servant at this point before eren break her free after meeting her at path, so she will listen to the fritz right ? but nooooo... It has to be mikasa, CONVENIENTLY MIKASA who is generic toxic/protective/want to be dominated girlfriend to kill her lover. It is hard to believe after thousand year there is noone similar to mikasa when war waged hundred and thousand war.
Started rewatching with this in context and the scene with kid Eren waking crying from a "long dream" hit me for the first time. Holy shit.
Just as Gigguk said the ending of Attack on Titan is what would determine if it was a modern masterpiece , but it does not need the greatest ending in all of existence because all of the story until now was absolutely amazing , it just needs to land on two feet , which in my eyes it did .

I've had this video in my watch later playlist since the day it released since I was an anime only viewer. Today, I'm coming back to it, purely because I absolutely LOVE your method of analysing and reviewing content
same I always watch his reviews of things I just finished watching as it acts as a good way to sort out how I fell about a show and get what I truly want to take from it at the end.
After finishing the anime adaptation of AOT, I am very convinced that they watched reviews like this one They made changes and extensions that address all of the constructive criticisms presented in this review and a bit from the Colossal One too. It is actually pretty awesome to see.
Feels like the ending, while a bit flat and not all that well told, doesn't undo the rest of the series, and still retains its own merits to some degree. AoT still seems very much like a series worth reading or watching from start to finish.
Yeah the series is a 9.5/10 to me, with a 4.8/10 or maybe 5/10 ending. It’s kinda fitting but too mediocre and just went full on info dump
@@a_mc1569 The 139 chapter count is beautifully symbolic, but I feel like this decision hurt the pacing of the final arc a lot. You could easily stretch the contents of this chapter over 2 or 3 chapters and it probably still wouldn't be perfect, but way better than what we got.
to an extent for sure, but erens character feels totally fake after ch90 and that he was following fate, and the ymir subplot is meh cause now she has stockholm syndrome. everything up until 123 is a damn masterpeice but after it gets really iffy. every manga has its worse arcs though sucks that the worst arc was probably the last.

If I'm honest I think that's a really bad decision.. Most people are only familiar with the 2011 anime, it's really well made and 1999 has alot of issues with pacing, theme and it ends in a really unsatisfying way. It also doesn't have the Chimera ant arc. Sigh...
@@yiangaruga4928 I still believe he will do the manga. With One Piece he didn't always only show the original anime. Sometimes there were scenes of the specials and movies.
I'm a sucker for "relatively happy" endings, so I'm mostly happy/satisfied with this ending. The few issues I have are really not deal-breakers. And as other people have said, the series as a whole is a 10/10.

@@rudrod95_41 No series is perfect. Code geass was very inconsistent right up until the ending. Death Note's quality decreased kinda after L died. Monster was really slow at moments. Evangelion was pretty okayish and often repetitive and boring right until the 20th episode. Fate/Zero doesnt explain the legends properly and thus cannot be enjoyed fully by those who arent familiar with the mythologies and history. Finally, The AOT ending is rushed and controversial. See the similarities here? All of the series I mentioned are (IMO) masterpieces of fiction. This isnt limited to anime tho. Lets consider literature now. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens can often be slow and cumbersome. The Godfather by Mario Puzo has a lot of filler in it. Crime And Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky isnt all that interesting unless you're super hardcore into psychology and shit. See my point? No work of fiction is perfect. Arent all these masterpieces too?
@@nayeemhaider8367 I totally agree with your comment. A work of art does'nt need to be perfect to be consider a masterpiece. There are plenty of examples in literature, cinema and painting, that nowadays have the status of being masterpieces, not for being perfect, but for the impact and influence they have achieved with the years. I think AOT will achieve that status in the future

My feelings on the finale are a little split, I feel the last chapter was under whelming, rushed, and I just got pulled out of it. But on the other hand I don’t think that it ruins the story, and at the end of the day the final chapter feels like it wrapped it up in a believable way.
that's because it doesn't ruin the story, the ending was foreshadowed ever since the interaction between armin, eren and mikasa. Everything built up to this and it's suprising to me that most people don't see it that way
Good news about the final chapter. Its confirmed the volume releases final chapter will have more pages in it. It's very likely that the chapter we got was only a small portion due to the magazines page limit

@@reinaldomartinez13 just because it was well foreshadowed doesn't make it good, I saw the ending coming a mile away but that doesn't mean I like having the manga tell me that I should feel bad about it, that I should feel sympathy for eren in this case

Titanfolk were the ones who got so attached to their theories and Titanfolk are the ones who wet their pants so hard when the textual evidence they made up was kicked out by the thematically consistent actual ending
I feel like Isayama has been hit so hard with being rushed. There is NO DOUBT that had the final chapter been extended to 140, the ending would be infinitely better.

Honestly, the whole final arc, The Rumbling Arc, was a bit of a mix bag of quality. While a majority of it had decent character moments and events that were profound, it was just marred with issues, plot, character and story wise. The Rumbling arc still had excellent plot, but suffered in execution imo. The anime will more than likely improve upon it vastly as Isayama himself expressed his dissatisfaction with how he handled some points and dialogue.

I think Eren killing his mother was a bad change. This is because I had thought we already established the abnormality of Dina's Titan earlier which is why it went for Eren and his family . that she was always going to follow Grisha even after being sent to Pardis. Not really, he hated the titans before his mother's death because they took away his freedom and the freedom of humanity. His mother's death just cemented that resolve.

@@quintus920 To explain a tiny theory I have (having just finished the manga hours ago) I think an explanation for is that Eren only sent Dina after his mom when he became the true Founder. Since as explained in the video, Eren has complete omniscience and sees and can interact in all points of time. Then now having that ability on top of the Founders power to control titans at will, all he had to do was to control Dina at that one point to kickstart the journey we've already experienced. That could also extend to when he controlled the titans the first time, as it is a point of importance for his path.
I personally feel like a lot of this is inferred and this is strictly my take on the idea.
He did not kill his mother. He simply made Dina went for another target instead of Bertold, because it wasn't his time to die yet. He might did it knowing his mother was going to be the casualty that kickstarted the whole story, but did he have any other choice? It's not like the past can be changed, everything was set in stone and there isn't any other timeline as far as I know. He influenced the past, but in a sense, the past that already happened is the reason he's there. Convoluted, I know, but it's not like anything remotely related to time travel isn't.

The Taikoubon/Volume Version of the Series will have few extra chapters and they been hinting that Eren has memories of the version of him as a High Schooler from the End of the Volume Attack on Titan High School Parody. Hinting that its somehow going to connect. Probably Eren's going to reincarnate into that version of himself at the ending. Likely as an homage to the Series Muv Luv, which is about a dude from a RomCom World going to a Hardcore Serious as Fuck Mecha World.

So ig it would make sense for grisha to do it despite knowing about the rumbling (albeit not all of it). He did say he wished eren gave him something more.
Overall the ending was bittersweet and I wouldn't have it any other way. I can't believe I watched it when I was 11 and now I'm 19 in uni, it was absolutely amazing to be a part of this era. Thanks for the memories Attack on Titan and until the last half of the anime comes out, this is farewell for now.
I started watching Aot when I was 7, and now I’m 14. It’s been a crazy ride with Aot and I think although the ending should be more fleshed out, it’s still a 10/10 for me 😅

yes, the dialogue between eren and armin seems rushed and stacked, and yet from the characters point of view, it is natural. two lifelong friends who know each other so well, well enough that this would exactly be how the conversation would play out in real life. they needed not to explain every detail in their conversation, because they know and understand what each other was thinking. that's why it felt so genuine to me. this is two friends conversing, not two characters explaining the storys ending to readers. its beautiful.

This is a long comment, but I hope someone reads it.
I had figured out quite a number of reveals of this chapter long in advance that I hadn't stopped to think how difficult it might be for others to suddenly get them all in 20 pages. For me, it was a constant barrage of "Yes, he's confirming it!", but it's probably too much if you hadn't expected these answers. I'll try to elaborate on why I think it's this way though, even if I would have preferred a double length chapter.
I should mention that the understanding of future sight is a little wrong though. It's not like Doctor Strange where Eren can see all possibilities. There's only one future he can see, and it's only glimpses and shards of memories. Back in 121, I began to wonder if this meant that Eren wasn't as free as the story was letting on. I understood that the implications of him being able to alter Eldians in the past meant that he could have saved his mother. He could have changed a lot of things. But no matter how much he wanted to, he knew he couldn't. He was bound by ensuring the future he was chasing would come to pass. Eren himself is a character who chases freedom, but why would you chase something you already have? He once said that the moment he realized he wasn't free was when he and Armin read that book as kids. He saw the look in Armin's eyes, like they could see an amazing dream that Eren couldn't see. Eren notices this very same look when they explore the world together this chapter. Eren is bound by a future he knows while Armin can move towards an unknown future with hope in his heart. The timeline is the way it is because of Eren, and it speaks volumes as to his motivations
Speaking for Eren's motivations, I'm surprised so many people thought he would kill his friends. The trauma of losing his mother, Squad Levi, Hannes, and all the others is his most profound pain. Even after he stops seeking revenge, he never stops holding that fear of losing his loved ones. Hannes' death scene in the anime especially hammers it in so deeply. Eren screams that nothing had changed, in reference to Hannes telling him early on that he wasn't strong enough to save his mother. Eren's love for his friends, his surrogate family, is one of the most integral elements to his character, enough that he would stand up to Levi for even thinking of choosing Erwin over Armin. I had wondered why people thought his father's memories had changed him into pursuing his nation's total freedom over his friends. In 89, Eren finishes recalling his memories but is still essentially the same person. It was only once he kissed Historia's hand that everything changed for him, and the rest of the series followed a much grimmer Eren. Without the explanation that came in 121 that he could see the future, the assumption in the meantime became succumbing to nationalism, but I don't think people revised that impression once they learned it was due to him understanding that he was going to kill billions.
For the baby, you hit the nail on the head. Back in 107, I had worried that Eren and Historia had taken on the mistakes of their parents and the cycle would continue. You could see them as Grisha and Dina who had Zeke for the purpose of using him. Or you could see them as the royal family who chose to sacrifice themselves to their children so they could continue being tools of King Fritz. For me, the concern was not WHAT the baby would be used for, but if it was going to be used at all. The farmer was intentionally left vague, and many story elements seemingly hinted at a deeper relationship between Eren and Historia, but nothing was ever confirmed even late in the story. And it couldn't be until the very end, because those red herrings kept the mystery box as to what Eren's true motivations and character really were. Eren is the second basement reveal of the series saved for the final chapter.
Isayama has said on several occasions that he has wanted his ending to hurt or betray his readers, that those are the works he remembers most. Many red herrings were intentionally included to push readers to certain conclusions when Isayama himself had never outright confirmed anything. The only way he could do this was by revealing everything in one go for the final chapter. You can call Eren whining in the water juvenile, but that is the point. That is him rubbing salt in the wound after pulling the rug out from beneath readers. Even Eren's exaggerated face as Armin punches it is indicative of Isayama's feelings. You just know he had been waiting to do that. It was the ultimate betrayal to readers who thought Eren had become an entirely new person. This was something that could not have possibly been pulled off over two months, so we ended up with a highly compressed conversation.
I must admit I wasn't expecting Eren being in love with Mikasa though. I know a lot of people who supported the genocide, Eren killing his friends, and Eren going back to his secret wife Historia and child, and the Mikasa thing is like battery acid on top of a salty wound to them. I'm definitely considering rereading and looking for more on that, but I don't want it to be taken as confirmation bias. I just assumed there would be no romance. But other than that, I had figured out Ymir's motivations, 90% of which are hinted at in 122. It never made sense to me why she just went back to King Fritz after becoming a godlike being and continued to serve him, have children, and even die for him. It's not like Fritz had magic powers, he was just a regular guy, so what was it that kept Ymir bound to his word for 2000 years? Her smile as Mikasa kissed Eren was when I had finally figured it out.

I've seen many people claim how this ending especially ruined the genius that was 119-122. I feel people were too awed by Eren's 'genius', him being the 'final boss', etc to realize that that Paths saga is the premise of this ending.
@@kritikasrivastava530 Yeah, it really bugs me that people say the ending was changed when so much of it was clearly foreshadowed, especially in the chapters people believed to be on the path to the "original ending".
I started reading the manga before the anime, so I got a similar impression to what Mark said about the openings retroactively feeling like propaganda. I remember thinking back in 2013 that it felt like they were glorifying events that were clearly horrifying, and that certain aspects like Eren's anger were played up. Titans being hideous is reminiscent of wartime propaganda posters and videos that deformed and dehumanized other enemy races. I got very clear anti-war vibes from the series, but so many people took it at face value, that it was epic and cool.
I don’t think the genocide was treated positively in the story, but so many people thought it was really cool. I think it was excellent as a story element for all the discussion it could raise, but so many people took it as the obvious solution that they wouldn't think twice about. I don't think Isayama gave his opinion on whether he thought what Eren was doing was right or wrong. Instead, it felt more to me like he was giving this story as a cautionary tale. This is what happens when you let fear and tribalism rule you. This is what happens when you step on others for your own propagation. This is what happens when you don't hold empathy. You will push life into a corner, and when life gets pushed into a corner, it gets desperate and does anything it can to ensure its survival. It's not that the genocide could have been prevented, it's that Attack on Titan's world had reached the point where it was the only thing that could happen, whether it was wiping out all Eldians or everyone else.
As our own world develops more complex and destructive ways of warfare, we must always remember that we can't let things reach a point like it did here. We are a complex species and it's in life's building blocks to act in its own personal interests, but we need to have an understanding that the rest of the world is life too.
Yeah I agree, only that I expected Eren and Mikasa to become a thing, especially after ch 50, but then again Mikasa is my favorite character so I would pay extra attention to her and her relationships with others.

For me I'm glad the story had the balls to actually go that route, it was refreshing to see. I reread the whole series the past week, and I must say this is the first time I've ever read something that kept bothering me after a day of being finished. It's a tragic and hopeful story. Eren got tired of depending on others and decided to take action to protect those he loved the most. Sasha and Hange were the only ones to die he truly cared about after he took action. His pain and suffering drove him over the edge to finally end it all for everyone. It's like he said, he became the villain so they could be the heroes and start a new life. He took the sins and flaws of the past, present, and future to forge a new beginning.

Just a quick headup: the line that Armin says in Japanese is badly translated even in the ufficial translation.
In japanese Armin says error as "Ayamachi", a word that has similar meaning to "Machigai", "mistake".
Both words means "error, mistake", but while the second one has a more "Easy going error meaning", the first one is the word that Isayama actually use.
It means an error that is life changing, cannot be undone and that' is morally wrong and unjustificable.
This sheeds a much clearer meaning to that phrase in 139, something that is sadly lost in translation.

I acknowledge It still could have been better executed or phrased, but lot of people have a problem with Eren's "I don't want Mikasa to be with another man' outburst', which honestly didn't strike me as that strange, it was the one time since being in his omnipetent state (that I can remember) where he seemed to show genuine emotion, the last time in his life where hell be able to express how he truely feels about her before he dies, these are his raw unfiltered feelings, and aside that I feel anime romance, or honestly a lot of mainstream romance in general frequently paints a lot selfish impulses like possession and jealousy as romantic so this depiction doesnt particularly surprise me, but in a way its oddly fitting.
Because well, Mikasa's love for Eren has frequently been descibed as, unhealthy, obsessive, and certainly had her moments of possessiveness and jealousy, literally the entire last arc is her reisting having to kill Eren even though he has murdered SO MANY PEOPLE. So Eren's outburst in a way is him expressing 'My feelings for Mikasa are just as selfish and irrational as her love for me!" And in that way, I weirdly find it kind of fitting.
But then again, you know, he did just kill most of humanity so its still ok to give him shit about it

I would argue that a major aspect of love is selfishness. A degree of possessiveness is an inherent part of the experience for most people. Ffs, most wedding vows have a line along the lines of "You are mine and I am yours". Of course there's a limit to how much of that can be considered healthy and I don't think what Eren says in the last chapter really counts as that considering he does still want Mikasa to move on and enjoy life after he's gone. Something that would've happened regardless of if he even went through with the Rumbling since he only had a couple years left on the clock anyway.

I came to watch this after watching the ending of the anime. First thing, I cried during the end. Also Mark I'd like to report that the suplex Gabi gave Falco was instead depicted as a warm childish hug that had too much speed, which is cuter. This video helped me understand the thing about Ymir watching Mikasa be able to let go and how the Curse of the Titans being around was her being obedient, thank you for making that make sense.
I really hope the anime adaptation will extend this ending, to explain more of the plot points much more in detail and less rushed. Overall AOT is a solid piece of art. Isayama can now go build his spa in peace.
Rewatching this is crazy. The story is basically a warning to never commit a terrorist attack to avoid creating an Eren. The rumbling was always something that Eren was capable of doing without hesitation.
Well, the harm the cycle of hate causes and what kind of monsters are created from said hatred is a major theme of the story, so it makes sense.
And he just created Millions of more Eren’s. How many survivors mothers were murdered during the Rumbling and will want vengeance on the ones that still supported his message?

The main problem that I have with this chapter is when Armin asks Eren why he did the rumbling, his response is literally "I don't know." Why didn't he just say that it was to protect his friends and Eldia? It makes him seem like a psychotic maniac when he's not supposed to be.
When Eren says "I don't know" he is lying in order not to look like a monster in Armin's eyes, in fact while he is saying this his father can be seen saying in the background "You are free."
Also in chapter 131 Eren says that he didn't do rumbling just for Paradis, but also for another reason, which is that the world outside the walls disappointed him, because it was full of people who wanted to take away his freedom, and that's why he did rumbling, to eliminate those who wanted to take away his freedom.

IIRC the original Japanese word had a much more severe connotation than "error" does in English, so it's still a bit of a bad translation, but even so, I agree that neither Armin nor Isayama ever tried to justify genocide. He thanked Eren because, even if the Rumbling was an absolute atrocity, he still did it so his friends could live long, happy lives. He then explicitly condemns rather than justifies it in the very next line of dialogue.
People saying AoT is genocide apolagia because Eren's best friend doesn't completely hate his guts or refuse to try and sympathize with him reminds me of way back after the series had first gotten big, where some article tried to claim it was fascist propaganda because it included a fascist government. to quote him: isayama feels like the ending is supporting genocide and he doesnt want the reader to think so, but kawakubo feels that is alright so people can think and feel genocide is bad because they read aot (that empathized genocide).
however this interview got another backlash in japan and had since being taken down.

The anime did the ending amazingly in the my opinion, as I have never read the manga. There’s just no reviews of the anime episode right now, so I need an analysis of the ending. The flaws you mentioned in the first 20 pages of this chapter do not seem to fit the description of the anime, cause I nearly started crying during that scene. I was not thinking about logistics one bit, the emotion was done so well thanks to the music.

And even then he had to keep convincing himself to keep moving forward into the hell he knew would be imminent. He was a slave to that path but he still had to abandon his humanity to get to the point of freedom.

The execution of the chapter was the only thing that made me mad. Not the things that happened but how they happened. It felt so damn rushed.
This is pretty much my take as well. The ending really was what it needed to be. It's the execution that was lackluster. The anime adaptation will likely fix it though, so I'm looking forward to it. The ending of the manga felt rushed and half-formed, so I'd rather watch the "final" version in the anime before I pass judgement.

@@SasuraRdm For me the biggest issue of the final chapter is with the dialogue. It felt like it didn't flow naturally. It didn't feel like a proper send-off to Eren’s character or even what a real conversation between him and Armin would feel like. For one, it was mostly just Eren expositioning the heck out of everything that happened up until that point. Then Isayama clearly had certain emotional beats and dialogue exchanges he deemed necessary to include but had very limited time in a single chapter, so as a result you get Armin reacting to information after information, panel after panel without much pause or introspection. It ends up feeling more like a checklist of scenes than a piece of dialogue. Some of its worst tonal whiplash is a product of this issue as well, with Armin reacting with horror and anger to some of the revelations, then a page or two down the line you have him teasing Eren about Mikasa finding another dude and Eren throwing a childish tantrum over it. There are also some pieces of dialogue that are very clumsily written because there wasn't enough time. There's that (by now) infamous quote by Armin that comes across as "thank you for committing war crimes, Eren!". But if you consider the context a bit more and aren't a bad faith actor, it's clear that he’s really just thanking Eren for his intention to protect them after Armin gains some clarity on the heartbreak and lengths Eren went to in order to achieve that goal, not supporting or condoning what he's done (I mean, if the fact that Armin and the rest turned against him and were willing to die in order to stop him doesn't tell you everything you need to know about what they think of Eren's actions, I don't know what does).
Other than that, I feel like some plot developments hinging on certain concepts and elements would feel a lot more earned if said concepts and elements were expanded upon more; case on point- the Paths, which ended up playing a HUGE part in the story unfolding the way that it did. Same with the centipede thingy, same with Ymir. I'd say the second half becomes increasingly more rushed, but it's really just the final chapter that is affected to that degree by having to cover so much information and ground.
All that being said though, I stand by my original comment that I overall liked the ending and thought it was what the series needed in order to gain proper closure. The skeleton is there, it's the meat that's the problem. Also I'm happy you enjoyed it, I'm not trying to take that away from you by voicing my grievances. I can both like it and be critical of it.

Re-reading it just now I'm actually oddly at peace with it. I think they could have framed the neccesity of Mikasa being the "chosen one" better. And they kind of made it seem like Eren is the least free guy there is. Which feels wrong somehow. I would have liked the idea of eren seeing parts of the future and acting on it, but in the end he saw everything and was a slave to destiny. Feels wrong.
Edit: A better explanation could be that Eren saw fragments of the future that he wanted to change and took extreme actions to attempt to minimize his friends deaths, not knowing if it ever could be avoided. Part of this would be him watching mikasa and Armin die and him surviving. So Mikasa succeeding in killing him could have been a sort of middle finger to fate. Proving that Eren and Mikasa and friends truly are free, and that their futures are in their own hands.
'They should have set up Mikasa as the "chosen one" better', you should rewatch the season 1 ending(the one after credits). Type aot ending 1 on yt. There are 5 endings overall. The first ending symbolises this exact moment/chapter. Just go and see it.
Yes. I hope in some shape or form, this vision will be portrayed in the Anime. MAPPA and Isayama could still alter some story beats.
If you've ever seen the ne Dune film (spoilers ahead), his visions into the future aren't always accurate, they're just possible paths into the future. And the main protag acts upon the present to influence which path he chooses to take.
I like your idea of Eren seeing a possible future where they all live a life different than this ending. Just to somewhat tease it.

I think the ending was satisfying (to me at least) when you think about how Eren essentially kept every promise he made

Not Paradis, just Shinganshina. A very important thing to note is that we only saw Shinganshina being bombed. And with Paradis being the world’s superpower, those planes are almost guaranteed to have been shot down right after they’d bombed Shinganshina.
The only thing this does is realistically show how Paradis will go to yet another war after it’s long era of peace. It’s message is that, no matter what, war will always exist in the world and can never be truly erased.
And Eren DID keep every promise he made. He wiped out the Titans. He devastated the rest of the world so his people could have an era of peace. He gave his friends the chance to live long and peaceful lives. He found freedom in death, represented by how Mikasa was reminded of Eren when she saw a bird (A representation of freedom, not Eren himself.). He made Paradis the world’s new superpower so that they could win the next war in the distant future. Like it or not, he did keep every promise he made. He was never trying to end war in general.

It can't. Eren's reasoning in 139 makes little to no sense and is inconsistent with what's been established of his character. It'll just ruin Eren even more.

*THANK YOU* for _not only_ being patient with us, but for ALSO explaining each and every aspect of the ending in meticulous detail. I appreciate the fact that you spoke about both the things that _worked,_ AS WELL AS the things that _didn't_ work.
*BUT YOU DIDN'T STOP THERE;* you went one step further than most other UA-cam critics and explained exactly _why_ certain things "didn't work" in the finale. For example: your gentle explanation concerning Eren's sudden passionate declaration of love for Mikasa being simply put in the "wrong place" *makes sense.* ... although I wish that Isayama had put in a little more subtext to illustrate that Eren felt SOMETHING other than sibling affection for Mikasa prior to this. (I know most people point to the "what am I to you?" scene as validation to this, but I wish there had been other moments).
• I also appreciate the fact that you explained the significance of Mikasa having to be the one who klled Eren. I never noticed the parallels between her and (founder) Ymir until your video. The handling of Mikasa was one of the things I disliked. I wanted her to be there at the end along with Armin and Eren. It was always the 3 of them. It felt ..WRONG to me, not including her.
• Finally, I'm STILL a little irritated concerning the whole "Historia's baby" plot. I was expecting the baby to be more significant...it feels like they played up the importance of the pregnancy and baby; that panel space could have been given to more character development in establishing Eren's feelings for Mikasa or his motives, but your explanation makes sense.
*THANK YOU* for not treating disgruntled fans as "less than". I know many other fans might look to that vocal percentage of fans who disliked the ending and turn up their noses at our anger. At our core, we are just hurt fans who feel/felt let down by the ending, who didn't understand the points Isayama was trying to get across.
I STILL don't agree with some of the decisions made in the finale, and I feel that it was rushed, but your explanation has DEFINITELY softened my dislike of it. After viewing your vid, I wish that Isayama had maybe been given more time, (and more pages) to tell his ending. Honestly tho he was more charitable to people who hated the ending than they deserve. People seem to think everything is either the greatest thing ever or the worst thing ever. AOT is a modern masterpiece with a ok ending IMO. I felt the same with death note, one of the greatest manga/anime of all time but the ending and the final arc didnt really measure up to what came before L __________ (not gonna not gonna spoil it even if its super old).

I agree 100% that the final chapter should have been split into 2. It being so cluttered at the end gave a 10/10 series a 7/10 ending. Its not bad, just not focused enough in the section of Erin's death and exposition. The rest of the chapter that was both before and after were amazing. But the exposition needed more breathing room.

I know it sounds silly but the japanese version is worded way better and it hit emotionally very well. The only parts that hit well in the translated english version are the ones that didn't have much text. Like Levis scene and the last scene with Mikasa. They really didn't nail the nuances in the translation in my opinion. Of course having a better translation wouldn't change the ending completely but I think it plays a bigger role than many may think... Because the ending is really well received in the japanese community.
There's been a few times I've read the original text and found that its more emotional than the translation too.
I've always expected to read the official translation of every chapter because Japanese language even korean cannot be translated in a rush.

I honestly can sum up my issues with this chapter to be simply the way they are conveyed, not so much that they actually happened.
Isayama said it himself it is very hard to convey the ending of aot.
@@zenldh It was hard because the limit of around 45 to 50 pages is not enough for to flesh out the final chapter properly.I was not expecting a hopeful ending,but in the case of the final chapter,it was undercooked and rushed to a certain degree.

Beyond this chapter, I think the final chapters as a whole had a myriad of issues (dangling plot threads, a tropey, plot-armored final battle, nothing from Eren’s POV for seven chapters when seeing his internal conflict with what he needs to do would’ve drastically helped, nobody else dying, etc.) but if the anime can clean up the execution better, it will greatly improve it. Ultimately, I think the problem comes from Isayama changing the ending from the initial plan. Read back through the final 30 chapters or so. It seems like, up until the final ten or so, it’s setting up a different finale, one where we see Eren guide history much more than one conversation with his dad like sending strength to his past self to save Armin in Trost, more deaths for other characters, seeing the final panel of Eren holding who seems to be Historia’s child, and other things. The last ten chapters just feel much more disconnected from the rest of the series, and it’s because it wasn’t initially being set up. I think Isayama was rushed due to editor pressure, fan response or both, and it resulted in what we got.
I believe Isayama said in his most recent interview that the Eren, Armin, and Mikasa conclusions were all planned, so that at the very least wasn’t changed according to the interview. Also the person holding a child wasn’t Eren holding Historia’s child, that panel was in 139 but it was Grisha holding Eren.

I would like to say I liked the ending but not the execution. I think another 2-3 chapters fleshing out more details and showing more character interactions could have made this perfect.

I just watched the last episode of the anime and I after it ended, I immediately came back to this video. I love the ending, as sad as it was, and this video is an amazing explanation of the ending. Thanks for this man.
So I think I figured out where the ending for AoT came from/ inspired from. It almost directly parallels the norse mythology for ragnarok. Below are just some of the highlights:
Odin dies trying to save all of his people (Gods=Eldians) after he is shown the past present and future. He fails to do so and is bound to fate. He is killed but avenged when someone jumps into the mouth of the monster that killed him and cuts it. The living gods gather (eldians) and 2 humans (rest of the world 20%) survive and repopulate. At the end the dragon dwelling at the base of the tree is spoken of as being unclear of it still being alive or not after ragnarok
I'm just at the 4 minute mark, but I got the feeling that, rather than Eren seeing each possibility, he just got nonlinear deterministic time: the future is as unchangeable as the past, if you experience them all at the same time. Watchmen's Dr. Manhattan's curse, all given to an unstable 15 year old boy.
EDIT: And you brought him up! In any case, the most apt parallel for Eren's character is that, once he touched Historia's hand, he was pretty much in what may be Interstellar's black hole. He could only do what had always been that way.
(Determinism being accurate to our universe scares me, and I REALLY hope time has another axis where it branches; many-worlds theory soothes a bit of that existential dread)
Then Attack on Titan Jr. High should give you peace. I would argue that it is a cannon splinter timeline of the pathways. Plus it's so dang wholesome!!!
I mean the many-worlds theory is nice but the problem is we are still deterministically driven in the world which we find out current consciousness inhabiting, so it's still deterministic for us even if there are other universes where we made different choices.

You can also argue that we can only experience the world with 3 spatial dimensions and a temporal one, so, you may argue the branching worlds are still the same universe, just across a dimensional axis we cannot experience. And you may even argue that the branching selves may as well be understood as different parts of the same thing. But, that is waxing phylosophical going on with theoretical physics to give a spice of extra wonder to the world; sheer determinism is a bummer: Either all futures exist, or not a single one does; just a singular future is depressing to me.

When reading this I found my self pausing on certain panels and digesting them. I think the problem is that people read things at a different pace. At no point did I think anything was rushed or silly but maybe that’s because when those impactful moments happened I just stared at the panel and lingered upon them.
Do you think the adaptation of the anime will help fix the out of control pace of this chapter? I think it might at least he a bit more digestible so thats good.
@@jossecoupe446 The anime could potentially make the ending a lot better. But I don't know if the season4 directors would do that. The director of WiT AoT would have done it, because his narrative style allows breathing time and can make a mundane event dramatic. I am Not sure of the Mappa AoT director tho.

I was one who thought Eren being the father of Historia's child was a given but after thinking about it more it's good that it didn't happen that way. From the kids perspective he'd either never be told about his father for the insanely horrible things he did or would know and it would possibly haunt him forever. Eren also only ever had feelings for Mikasa so to have a kid with someone else would come off a betrayal of that.
