For Misty's Starmie, Rock Blast would've yielded better odds of victory rather than relying on Secret Power. Rock Blast hitting at least three times, stacked with its 80% accuracy gives that a 50% chance of happening, while Secret Power is just a 30% paralysis chance.
Why rely on a 50% chance of winning if you have a 100% win chance except for when you get crit or your first move missed. Yes that option was there all along.
Scott .. idk if you're aware of this but in the city with the 3rd gym in the poke center the lady by nurse Joy gives you the VS Seeker which allows you to rematch trainers... It could be useful especially in runs when you run out of trainers to battle
I have to wonder during the grind for Misty if grabbing the VS Seeker in the Vermillion pokemon center would have been faster than wild pokemon grinding.
SCOTT. All you needed to do was to use Rock Blast against Misty. Even a three-hit would've gotten the ohko! Secret Power against targets neutral to your STAB is not usually the move 😂 (btw I'm loving this series because we get to see you making mistakes again! It's always easy to see the correct moves when I'm here at home and YOU'RE out there playing. But this is the content I fell in love with; Scott getting stubborn and trying the same bad strategy over and over again when there's a clear viable option RIGHT THERE. I love your new stuff, but man, it's so nice to get a throwback moment like this!)
Ironically, the move you discounted at the start of the game would have been an answer to Exeggutor; Megahorn. You would have to learn it in place of Ice bean after Giovani, but you can buy another Ice Beam TM since you had enough money to buy Thunderbolt which in the end did not get used. You might have to teach the second Ice Beam before Lance for the Dragonite in the place of Earthquake, and then use the TM for Earthquake to swap back for the Champion, but that might not even be needed as you still got though with Rock Slide and just tanking an Outrage so might even be better to invest in some Carbos for the speed range on Pigeot. Megahorn still has bad accuracy, so you may still get some resets, but overall it has a better chance of getting through the Exeggutor than waiting for Hydro Pump to miss or a flinch from Rock Slide.
Not sure I understand the numbers correctly, but it looks like a three-hit Rock Blast would have killed Starmie. That should be about 50% (64/125), compared to the 30% paralyze chance.
i wanna give you a few advice that might be useful for a second playthrough of rhydon: for Misty it's more reliable rock blast due to the fact that it hits always harder than secret power; in the vermilion city Pokémon center there's the vs seeker to refight trainers in case you need to grind; last advice instead of keeping ice beam or thunderbolt since two very problematic Pokémon were slowbro and exeggutor, both weak to megahorn i suggest using that move that surely destroys exeggutor due to the quad weakness, and probably kills also slowbro. Anyway love your content, i follow you since you started and seeing that you made so far it's fantastic. Keep it up man❤
For future mons weak to Lorelei, it's worth noting that her Cloyster only has Dive as an attacking move, so if you have Protect it can't hit you and you can set up a Substitute going into the rest of the fight.

I wonder if Rock Blast would be more consistent against Misty. Secret Power has a base power of 70 whereas 3 hits from Rock Blast would equate to 111 base power with STAB. Considering the damage Secret Power did I wouldn't be surprised if 3 hits from Rock Blast would finish it off. That said I have no idea what the odds are for Rock Blast hitting more then 2 times and of course there is the accuracy to factor in so it might just end up being as inconsistent as fishing for the paralysis.

Scott, first of all I agree with many others saying that rock blast for misty is much better than secret power, you could have won earlier. Secondly, i think that bulbasaur would have been a better starter for the rival. Thinking about his alternatives, if he takes squirtle, the grass type will be exeggutor which has a terribile movepool and is not a threat for rhydon. If he take bulbasaur, the water type will be gyarados so 2 threats for rhydon Edit: i forgot that in 3rd gen exeggutor has a better movepool, i was thinking about red and blue, so nevermind blastoise is fine
I always loved rhyhorn’s design. But yeah… between a bad move pool and an extremely bad typing it never really got a spot on my team. This poor Pokémon deserved way better than game freak ever gave it.
The answer for Misty was Rock Blast. As it could've one shotted with a 3 hit Stab which is a 50% chance, instead of fishing for a paralysis which is a 30%.
Thinking here, what if you kept Megahorn and deleted EQ before Lance then taught it instead of Ice Beam via TM for the champion? That way Exeggutor would not be that much of a pain. Great run nonetheless!
Has anyone else been hearing the occasional high pitched ringing in the fire red videos? I noticed a couple in the hypno playthrough yesterday as well as in todays video at the 15:02 mark
Am I going nuts or did Scott not go over why he went for Squirtle over Bulbasaur? I expect Bulbasaur would be the harder battle since you end up getting double intimidated by Gyarados and Arcanine.
while mentioning the substitute, I wondered if you could equip the leftovers for some passive healing but nope... it's essentially blocked off (you NEED to use the itemfinder after beating Snorlax, and you can only get the itemfinder after "obtaining" 30 pokemon, which effectively locks it off for a solo-challenge perspective)
Considering the main weaknesses that cause you grief are special and the critical outspeeds were narrow, I think a Careful or Jolly nature would have helped a fair bit in this case.
Maybe a tip for a future Rhydon playthrough, a special defense or speed boosting nature could probably really work in it's favor. Either moving first more, or living a hit better. Maybe something to consider.
Nature is a 10% modifier 30 base something only goes up to 33 It's best used to make the pokemon better at what he's good at But it's true that rhydon just needed a few speed point multiple time so.. maybe
@@ryomaanime4563 Remember that natures have a bigger impact than you think. While of course 10% of a low stat is not great, it's still something. Maybe just enough to outspeed some things or to live mainly Starmie's water pulse more consistently.
When you were at lvl 32 or lvl 34 at Misty you could have gone for Rock Blast!! It would need a couple of attempts but would have been much faster than secret power
Coming from your more planned-out RBY runs, these FRLG runs are so frustrating to watch. (Shout out to anyone who reads “so frustrating” in Scott’s voice. 😂)
One thing you can do that i've noticed you don't - both Snorlaxes have 100% chance to hold a leftovers, which regenerates your pokemons a little bit over time, and i do believe it's powerful enough to cancel out poison. You should be able to catch a snorlax (and it's a good HM-slave) or just use Thief on it to steal the item anyway
The snorlaxes actually hold chesto berries. To get the leftovers you need to use the ItemFinder on the spot where slorlax was. As this is a solo challenge, he can't catch the 30 pokemon needed to recieve the ItemFinder from Oaks Aide
I look forward to the one day in the future optimized run where you realize that rock blast is way better than secret power for Misty since it would definitely take out Starmie in 3 hits, which is the majority of the time when it lands, and Dig might even just barely be able to get a 1 hit (this will require testing), and that Megahorn is WAY better late game than fire blast, both using your more powerful physical attack, being super effective against all the psychic types in the league, and 4x for Exeggutor, and is basically neutral at worst for everything Lorelai and Champion
After you beat the rival on the SS Anne you said you needed to battle against wild Pokemon? So you get an item from the NPC in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center called the VS Seeker. You use it and nearby trainers have a chance to respond, get an exclaimation point above them, and you can rebattle them! I challenged the two trainers above the city which both give Speed EVs, which I feel like could've helped especially in the early game. It's also a good way to get more money too!
I can't believe you didn't call out the rival's pidgeotto! Pidgeotto: *uses one sand attack, then spams damaging moves* Ryhorn: *misses thief 6 times in a row* 1 in 4000 odds. Not to mention missing the first rock tomb, and an 80% range on the second one to OHKO pidgeotto. Admittedly you got some good luck that fight too, but that is half of raw shiny odds just missing theif
Scott getting poisoned and casually walking to a random to to pull out an antidote. The boss moves of a player who has memoriesd hidden item locations. I am already concerned that substitute will be overused. We will see.
For Misty, I feel like you could just black out instead of resetting every time you lose. It might be a bit more time between tries, but the exp would have helped.
If a second playthrough were to be done in the distant future...who here believes a maybe Hasty nature (not really sure about Jolly in this case despite it's horrendous special attack) would've been ideal for the Rhydon line in Fire Red? Also, I'm sure you would really like Pinsir...while yes, probably not good because early game Brock. It has the Hyper Cutter ability to block Feather Dance and Intimidate, it has good coverage (Rock Slide, Earthquake, Brick Break), and it knows Bulk Up and Swords Dance. I'm sure it would also be pretty decent overall and it's one of the more underrated Pokemon in Fire Red IMO.
Frustratingly slow despite it's incredible Attack. It felt like it was just a few points too slow for almost every key battle! Overall, it feels like FRLG significantly higher level to beat due to deeper opponent movepools and less exploitable AI. Also noticed the Rock Blast for Misty strategy a lot of others have mentioned, that would make her a lot more consistent in a future optimized playthrough. Another thing you should consider is the Sevii Islands for runs that need additional training. The dialogue does take a bit of time, but it gives access to more relatively high leveled trainer Pokemon, an extra Rare Candy, and the Move Reminder.
a fair number of things went wrong in this run. rock blast the starmie has been mentioned a hundred times, megahorn to take out exeggutor wouldve been huge, what about just not evolving at 42, get earthquake and evolve at 52? a little bit more training around koga and sabrina to get the levels and youll end up at 54 or 55 in giovannis gym with earthquake to obliterate him, forget the poison point entirely. couldve shaved off a good 20 minutes or so maybe
For the Misty fight, is it possible the reason it took so long to get a Paralysis that your muscle memory was so good that you were consistently hitting the exact same frames on each reset?
For misty you did get rather unlucky but statistically viable. The way to figure it out is more looking at the odds of it not happening so in this case there is a 7/10 chance not to paralyze. You had 10 fails when you went back to misty and won on your 11th attempt 1-((7/10)^1) means that there is a 98% chance you would have had a paralysis by then. In comparison after just 3 tries you would have had almost a 66% chance or better than a coin flip. Oh the joy of statistical probability
So I think the cloyster range where it did not get the one shot was because you saved 2 more rare candies, putting rhydon only at level 68 instead of 70. This did give you two more candies at Agatha so idk, take that how you will lol
Next time you play one of these, please make sure to give it a +speed nature, or +SpDef nature. I think in this playthrough, speed was definitely the thing you struggled with. The VS seeker in Vermillion City allows you to re-challenge trainers. This can speed up the grinding. If you know that speed is going to be a problem, grinding against things that give speed EVs, such as Zubat and Diglett, is a great idea. THe EVs make a big difference especially when combined with nature.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I see, that seems fair. I see an opportunity to meme Serious, Docile, Quirky or Bashful some times. I think always Neutral nature hurts some pokemon (slow in particular) harder than others. But maybe for follow up playthroughs you can play around with it, much like you did Hidden Power in Crystal. If it ever comes to follow up playthroughs in this series.
I was thinking about how victrebel out performed expectations so much, and it got me thinking, just how good would mewtwo be with the medium slow growth rate. that would be an incredible mod run for yellow.
Mewtwo's already godly in Gen 1. And it's probably got one of the best starting movesets. It starts with Psychic of all moves and has Swift and Confusion as other starting moves. It also has Disable, but Disable kind of sucks until Gen 5.
A very strong pokemon, but it's not gonna be an easy go of it. Waiting for level 42 is gonna be brutal. Especially because training a rhyhorn is the worst
When I was a kid I thought Rhydon was so, so cool, but I never used one because I thought it evolved super late like Dragonite and I didn’t want to train one up. After all, Giovanni and Rival 6 had high level Rhyhorns and not Rhydons, so surely they just weren’t high enough level yet, right? I wished kid me hadn’t trusted Game Freaks weird team design because Rhydon is one of my favorites from Gen 1 and using it as a kid would have been so cool.
From a design perspective, Brock is suppose to teach you the importance of the difference between physical and special moves. With the three starters, you should have Ember, Bubble or Vine Whip for Brock. Even Ember which isn't super effective is going to be doing a lot more damage than most normal moves. It's also a place to learn the importance of the type chart if you didn't get to learn that earlier. However, I agree that is quite possible to learn the wrong lessons from Brock. If a player isn't willing to experiment with either new moves or new pokemon, they face quite like a grind, although usually not as bad as what happened to Rhydon at Misty. Alas the solo play style duplicates this behaviour.
For Misty's Starmie, Rock Blast would've yielded better odds of victory rather than relying on Secret Power. Rock Blast hitting at least three times, stacked with its 80% accuracy gives that a 50% chance of happening, while Secret Power is just a 30% paralysis chance.
I was thinking the same thing。
Yeah definitely was thinking the same, just after he wasnt going to discount the move's value.
I was dying inside thinking that
Exactly what I was going to say. Secret power was taking like 75% of Starmie's hp, Rock Blast could have just killed it a good % of the time.
Why rely on a 50% chance of winning if you have a 100% win chance except for when you get crit or your first move missed. Yes that option was there all along.

The answer for Misty was Rock Blast. As it could've one shotted with a 3 hit Stab which is a 50% chance, instead of fishing for a paralysis which is a 30%.
Channel artist did Rhydon dirty in the thumbnail. Get my man a push-up bra.
Sooo, a few thoughts:
- Erika my beloved
- why not use Megahorn for Alakazam and Eggman?
- haha imagine a special Rhydon 😅
It was a fun video
I always respected GameFreak's bold decision to make Poison Point a 100% chance in FR/LG for the player attacking only
Thinking here, what if you kept Megahorn and deleted EQ before Lance then taught it instead of Ice Beam via TM for the champion? That way Exeggutor would not be that much of a pain. Great run nonetheless!
Cool Trainer Warren; The People’s Viridian Gym Leader!
Has anyone else been hearing the occasional high pitched ringing in the fire red videos? I noticed a couple in the hypno playthrough yesterday as well as in todays video at the 15:02 mark
Hell yeah! full dratini line as Arceus intended
I can't wait to see how much time you can shave off once you've properly "learned" FR/LG :D
I can’t wait for when you start doing black and white. I wanna see how you somehow win with both Unfezants 😂
Am I going nuts or did Scott not go over why he went for Squirtle over Bulbasaur?
I expect Bulbasaur would be the harder battle since you end up getting double intimidated by Gyarados and Arcanine.
while mentioning the substitute, I wondered if you could equip the leftovers for some passive healing
but nope... it's essentially blocked off (you NEED to use the itemfinder after beating Snorlax, and you can only get the itemfinder after "obtaining" 30 pokemon, which effectively locks it off for a solo-challenge perspective)
Nature is a 10% modifier
30 base something only goes up to 33
It's best used to make the pokemon better at what he's good at
But it's true that rhydon just needed a few speed point multiple time so..
These fire red videos are really cool.
Wooooo one of my favorite Gen 1 mons
After you beat the rival on the SS Anne you said you needed to battle against wild Pokemon? So you get an item from the NPC in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center called the VS Seeker. You use it and nearby trainers have a chance to respond, get an exclaimation point above them, and you can rebattle them! I challenged the two trainers above the city which both give Speed EVs, which I feel like could've helped especially in the early game. It's also a good way to get more money too!
I can't believe you didn't call out the rival's pidgeotto!
Pidgeotto: *uses one sand attack, then spams damaging moves*
Ryhorn: *misses thief 6 times in a row*
1 in 4000 odds. Not to mention missing the first rock tomb, and an 80% range on the second one to OHKO pidgeotto. Admittedly you got some good luck that fight too, but that is half of raw shiny odds just missing theif
Scott you beat summoningsalt today for first video I want to watch 😅
Scott getting poisoned and casually walking to a random to to pull out an antidote. The boss moves of a player who has memoriesd hidden item locations.
I am already concerned that substitute will be overused. We will see.
*Obi-Wan Kenobi’s voice*
The Rock Blast Scott. Use the Rock Blast against the Starmie Scott.
For Misty, I feel like you could just black out instead of resetting every time you lose. It might be a bit more time between tries, but the exp would have helped.
Great video dude!
20:42 Berries have a chance of respawning every 1500 steps. You do have an unlimited amount of berries in the playthroughs.
I love this Rocky disaster so much
Scott you're a Legend
Ya know, I was really expecting Erika to be a lot worse. Glad to see I was wrong!
Oh great Scott!!
a fair number of things went wrong in this run. rock blast the starmie has been mentioned a hundred times, megahorn to take out exeggutor wouldve been huge, what about just not evolving at 42, get earthquake and evolve at 52? a little bit more training around koga and sabrina to get the levels and youll end up at 54 or 55 in giovannis gym with earthquake to obliterate him, forget the poison point entirely. couldve shaved off a good 20 minutes or so maybe
For the Misty fight, is it possible the reason it took so long to get a Paralysis that your muscle memory was so good that you were consistently hitting the exact same frames on each reset?
It’s a good thing Sabrina didn’t have the water / grass type Venemoth on her team!
For misty you did get rather unlucky but statistically viable. The way to figure it out is more looking at the odds of it not happening so in this case there is a 7/10 chance not to paralyze. You had 10 fails when you went back to misty and won on your 11th attempt
1-((7/10)^1) means that there is a 98% chance you would have had a paralysis by then. In comparison after just 3 tries you would have had almost a 66% chance or better than a coin flip. Oh the joy of statistical probability
Against Lorelei, it seems like setting up the substitute would have been a better choice against the Cloyster.
Always Hardy in this series.
If it ever comes to follow up playthroughs in this series.
wouldnt a 4 hit rockblast killed starmie too?
3 hits were already enough
Ahh yess, slowbro the ground/rock type pokemon 😂
This is an unusual Yellow Slowbro run 🤔
Secret Power isn't a contact move, it would probably help keeping it around till you're done with poison point mons
I know you did this play though a while ago but pidgeys and ratattas give speed evs for future references
Im not sure where double edge is in FR, but that would've been decent vs return in some situations when considering rock head :p
A very strong pokemon, but it's not gonna be an easy go of it.
Waiting for level 42 is gonna be brutal. Especially because training a rhyhorn is the worst
I always felt that Golem was a more impressive Rock/Ground pokémon over Rhyhorn/Rhydon.
Hey Scott, what about hasty nature and a few speed eevees in diglet would that help reduce tine?
I'm getting Aggron Emerald vibes here... Hope you picked a speed+ nature and maxed the EVs on speed....
11:00 do remember that you have a move that can 1 shot starmie... Rock blast
