  • Like DJ Khaled would say: "Another One", video about our dear and beloved GPD Win Max 2. This time, it is a guide on how to get a multi-boot triple OS build on a single drive, all connected by a dedicated games partition. With this build, you can truly separate gaming, retro gaming, and navigating all while retaining your SD, MicroSD, and USBs free for other uses.

    Hej Klef. At the beginning of the HoloISO Installation, the installer dosn‘t show my NVME. Any suggestions? I‘ve searched the Internet but dosn‘t find a solution.

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  7 місяців тому

      That's weird, and your NVME shows in the bios correct? An educated guess would be that the NVME is formatted in an unrecognized file format in SteamOS. As far as I know, NTFS is not recognized, and if that happens, it is because during the Windows formatting prompt when originally installing Windows, the space was not left unallocated and instead, a drive was created. That can easily be remedied though, in Windows, click the Start button and type: "disk management". Using the tools that'll come up, you can select the drive and wipe it empty (and without a file format), just make sure not to format it as otherwise, you will once more give it a file type.
      Cheers and I hope this helps, happy holidays!

      Can't say that I have unfortunately, shortly after this video, I wipe the drive to try a "slim down" version of Windows 11, called Ghost Spectre? That build is AWESOME, so I haven't really looked back since as I was out on vacation. For good measures, as HoloISO is not directly from Valve, I'd recommend keeping up with the github and doing a clean install when a new version comes about, hence the advantage of storing games in a separate drive.
      Cheers!

      @@GameTechTalk Cheers, I actually just got it working by using your “plug in a HDMI cable” trick. It seems the default video output gets messed up when rebooting after an update. Hi there, thanks for this amazing guide. Is it really necessary to do a fresh clean install of Windows? Isn't it possible to shrink the existing partition and create the new ones? I'd like to preserve the built in recovery mode, if possible.

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  14 днів тому +1

      Yeah you definitely could do that, it shouldn't cause any problem. If the master boot record is affected (which it shouldn't), you shoudl also be able to rebuild it though that is a slightly different process that is not covered in the video. But should you have booting issues, that's what you want to look up: "repair master boot record". Pleasure is all mine!

    @mystechry Рік тому +1

    Sorry, Klef
    Your video is of great quality as usual, but the setup and the reasoning behind is something I do not agree with.
    1.
    Why on earth would you want to boot into the SteamOS bootloader, then go into UEFI and select the OS from there.
    When set up properly, all the installed OS can be listed in that boot menu.
    Maybe it's not that easy with SteamOS, but usually you rebuild the GRUB menu and all the OS are there.
    2.
    Bateocera is a useless install.
    There is RetroBat on Windows which is closely related to Batocera and features quite a bit of extra options.
    The setup is super simple and the result will be quite the same as Batocera.
    3.
    This is personal preference now, but I do not see the advantage of SteamOS, if there is Windows + Steam Big Picture mode.
    Sure, if one wants to have both that is a valid point.
    4.
    Having all the OS on one drive has its disadvantages.
    I keep my Linux and Windows on separate SSDs.
    That has multiple advantages
    - If one breaks, there is a backup
    - If I want to replace one, the other is still in tact
    - My games and Windows are on the same drive, but on different partitions. Same for my Linux and work files. That way in 99% of my needs I only read from one disk, which keeps the other one idle and saves maybe a bit of power.
    I see thst your setup is very gaming centered. I plan to make a video covering more Windows and Linux for gaming and work setup.
    On a positive note: It's great how detailed the setup tutorial is. Many people will value that a lot I'd say. Especially if they really want to go for a triple boot setup :)

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  Рік тому +1

      No worries, any form of input is welcome. I tried something different, we'll see how the video performs over time but if just for comments and feedback, it's valuable all the same, like yours! 😊
      1.
      I mention near the end that boot names can be addressed by I don't go into details. Grub2Win is the way I'd go about it as well. Great suggestion!
      2.
      I see that as a personal matter, some people like an OS dedicated to a specific use. Batocera is a great solution for drag 'n drop progression, plus all the baked-in convenience features. But to your point, there is the possibility to build better elsewhere given the time and effort.
      3.
      But people like SteamOS, what can I say! 😂 Also, WINE improves on some games performance over running them natively on Windows, crazy I know, but true.
      4.
      Totally, my guide is geared towards someone that doesn't do these things regularly, because if they did, let's be honest, they wouldn't watch nor care for that guide, they wouldn't need it. I decided not to overcomplicate things as it's really easy to mess up these kinds of builds. But maybe that "easy-to-follow" format was a little too basic? You guys tell me. ❤
      And yeah, my MiniPC critics have been very navigation oriented, but I have to find a balance to also address gamers, which I am at heart so that setup was gaming first, productivity second no doubt.
      Tks for all the feedback Mystechry, these conversations are very valuable and insightful to me. Cheers!

    • @mystechry
      @mystechry Рік тому

      @@GameTechTalk This is a nice gaming setup and it's great to see Batocera to run on the Max 2.
      On my Intel Prototype it did not work, because the Kernel it was running at that time was not compatible with the panel and there were green stripes all over the place.
      The guide surely was not too basic, as I consider setting up 3 OS on one disc to work nicely is more advanced than setting up each OS on its own drive ;)
      It's mostly a matter of perspective I guess.
      You'll do yours and I'll do mine. The more perspectives we get out there, the better ;)

      Plug an HDMI, in and out and that should fix this issue you are describing. That error is inconsistent, I've seen other people have it, some not. I got it at times than others I haven't. It's definitely not a flawless solution as you can see but it's the compromise we have to put up with until something better comes about. I use a HDMI dummy to fix it easily on the go.

    Hi, my GPD WM 2 (2023), internal SSD (2280) may be in trouble, can I using 2nd SSD (2230) slot to install new OS? Just to make sure the problem is really in SSD. GPD promise to send new 2280 SSD to me if indeed the SSD is broken. If after do this the problem still persist, I may need to send it back to China for them to replace it.

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  6 місяців тому

      Yes you can, the second SSD slot, just as the first, can both be used to be a MBR (master boot record), that's something that can easily be set when installing Windows if you format both drives. It's a little more complicated if you do while keep currently existing OSes but it's feasible, you have to turn to third-party software to update your boot order and whatnot.
      In fact, this video goes about things in a certain order to make sure that your MBR is set properly, making any steps any different can alter that outcome. If I recall, near the end of the video when I show how to change the boot order in the BIOS, I mention an app to make changes if desired, I just don't cover it in that video but you should find plenty that do on UA-cam. Cheers and good luck!

      Looks like there is a problem far deep than just an SSD, in fact the SSD seems OK, but even with all my experience installing Windows since DOS era I still can not solve it. The SSD is detected but the installation from USB always stuck on start up right after the GPD logo and circle animation and then period of blank screen until the WM2 shut down. I don't think there is a problem with display either. Now I left with last choice of send it back to GPD but I have to wait until the CNY since they all in holiday until 16 February. I just buy this on December and can only use it for 2 weeks before all the problem happen. @@GameTechTalk

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  6 місяців тому

      So what you're describing is one of two things in my opinion. #1 is, your files are corrupted on the USB stick and it causes the installation to have issues. I know it sounds uncommon but I find that it happens a lot when creating a media bootable device.
      #2 your ram needs to be flushed. That bootable USB dumps everything in your ram to run the installation process, if your ram has stuck/corrupted clusters, it can cause the issue you're having.
      I'd recommend re-doing the stick, ideally maybe go for a different one. If that doesn't work, Google a tool to flush your ram, unfortunately, I don't know any off the top of my head but Windows may have that feature when booting in Admin command prompt. My money is on #2, worst case scenario, something is defective and it could be your ram.
      Good luck, let me know what pans out! @@st3v4nt

    Tell me, can I leave only 50 GB for the Steam OS installation disk partition? I mean, why allocate a lot of memory for Steam OS (400GB), if you can connect a disk partition with a large memory that combines all 3 OS, what is the point of installing games on the Steam OS memory partition, is it possible to install games on a common memory partition which unites all 3 OS?, so there was more access to memory control, because on Windows the Steam OS memory does not recognize, but for example, the batocera recognizes , and if you know, which file system(exfat,ntfs or fat32) work in holoiso(steamos) work?

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  7 місяців тому

      You can. The one reason why you may want to make it bigger is because the file format is different. And most operating systems will overall operate better with their native file format that it uses. If I remember correctly, there is another one that apparently performs decent and can also be read on Windows but both require third party software, I think it's BTRFS or something like that.

      However, you can't really go wrong here, your choice may ask you to adapt your approach but that is about as worst as it gets. If you got with AYA, I suggest going for the GEEK, no one has the 800p screen by the way so we don't know how that's going to look.
