Tom can be pretty sloppy playing live indeed, I've seen plenty of footage of that. I was pretty late to actually seing them live in real life. Pretty much the last tour they did before Tom went 'searching for aliens' and he was on fire, playing at hyperspeed, even that M&M's lick flawlessly while adding little things to it aswell. At the time I had outgrown my DeLonge fanboy phase but I was impressed with how he pulled it off. Too bad his rig sounded like a can of bees compaired to the massive tone he had back when he played the Mesa/Marshall rig... Again never expierenced that in real life, only from videos.

Haha, I actually kept it “OG” with the black Les Paul since the original version of this song was recorded after Dude Ranch with Scott on drums and Tom was still using a Les Paul at the time.
How do you switch from a more overdriven sound to that clean chorusy sound so quickly I've wondered how tom does it too but I never see him change effects live.
The audio is pre-recorded, I’m not actually recording it live. I just play along the song when I record the video. As far as doing it in a live setting, he probably has a switcher/looper with effects pre-set in the chain that he can engage on the fly, kind of like just switching channels on an amp.
