Jackie Evancho: Overcoming bullying on her way to the top

  • Teen soprano Jackie Evancho has been a worldwide sensation ever since breaking out on America's Got Talent. But neither her voice nor her fame make her bullyproof. In fact, as Jackie pointed out in this Live! Starring ... You! interview with Lauren Kirchmyer, kids with big dreams can get targeted for being different. Pushing past those obstacles, it seems, is a common step on the path to the top.

    Amazing poise for such a young person and she explained bullying in a different light that resonates. I'm impressed with her insight and determination. I've always found that helping the bullied deal with the problem rather than dealing with the bully was a better tact. Self esteem comes not from having others handle your problems but you overcoming the obstacles in front of you. It's okay to facilitate resolution but the big steps have to be by the bullied.

    Nice post, Cathie, and you're right on! Jackie's one gracious, talented & giving young lady and role model. JE's still being bullied by some, but not in a physical sense. You can see that in a few of the reviews (very few) that diss her, as well as blogs that will diss her & her parents. Her dad said in the WQED interview that it's often just jealousy & they pay no attention to it.

    Hate the fact she was bullied, but it seems to be a contagious thing. Once someone bullies, a group of people join in. Glad to see Jackie has gone beyond it and continues to thrive. Love you Jackie!

    Jackie is wise beyond her years, thanks to her wonderful upbringing by great parents. Bullies are unhappy souls that try to inflict their own displeasure with life on others. Instead of trying to better themselves, they direct their anger and jealousy toward others and try to bring them down. They have no personal self-worth so they don't want anyone else to have what they don't have. So sad, and it's a reflection on their own upbringing. Jackie is an excellent role model.

    Thank GOD! she is not just your average super multi talented beautiful soft spoken pretty kitten.But she has a fighting spirit as well!. She began to even understand from her own pears, that they're good and evil heart out there. But my my ain't she sound surely prepare. Hot to deal with the ods and even ends of mind that are full of hatred, and envy twisted and bent.I say she's gonna be alright.

    I never had a "Mean bone" in my body. in school, Whenever someone tried to bully me, I become a bit of a "savage", seeing the cruel injustices dealt to me or even to others!.. onetime a known "school bully" kept voicing obscenities at me, so, as he was walking, I put my foot in front of him and then pushed him to the ground!. that ended his bullying very very quickly!.. Bullying is as old as the "ages", so deal with it and put an end to it!..

    Bullying is a major problem in schools, verbally, physically & online. Jackie hit the mark with her comments. I called my old high school & asked them if they had a bullying problem. The counselor I spoke with said they did, so I told her about JE's video & asked if she'd heard of her. She hadn't, but was interested, so I sent her this video along with a couple of others so she'd know who Jackie is. I believe this video can help those being bullied, as well as those doing the bullying.

    It is good to hear Jackie overcoming bullying in her life. But her specific case is probably not the typical teen bullying victim that still persists across the nation. Jackie is blessed with a strong, supportive family. She has so many accomplishments and praise from her fans that sustain her inner strength and self image. Many other bullied teens do not have the good fortune of great talent and a loving family. They have to find other means to sustain themselves.

    I wasn't sure what she was looking at in the video. I believe we agree on most things about Jackie except maybe what level she was bullied. She is diffidently a perfectionist, I have seen tweets where she apologized for a concert and all the reviews were great. As for her taking Taekwondo maybe that is why the Japanese television show gave her a Ninji suit, throwing stars and a real short sword.

  • @bruceh7211

    I sure think she's got a lot of Lisa's persona. Lisa has a very strong presence, as doesJackie. That's apparent in her chats (when she used to do it). Rachel's a tomboy for sure, but so is Jackie, and perhaps more than little sis'.
    Also studying Taekwondo now. I think the worst thing, though, would be to get her stink eye. She's a perfectionist & expects the same with those who perform with her . It's at about 1:34 watch?v=WlZfZnUkvVo&list=FLRmOdaxQaRzwnV6p9bFcEMQ&index=78

  • @bruceh7211
    @bruceh7211 11 років тому

    As I said, it was in a tweet after AGT, and it was by a boy classmate. Sure she was extremely popular in her home town after her AGT performances. but some people are just jealous of a successful classmate, &kids can be mean. We had an interesting discussion on bullying in JEFC chat last night. Also several comments on the Forum from fans who've been physically attacked, or bullied others. And it's a serious problem, not just physical bullying, but online. No one would dare bully her now! :)

  • @richardoky
    @richardoky 11 років тому

    Who's to say Jackie doesn't have a lot of Lisa in her. She is much more the tomboy then the girly girl type, She likes archery, has a trail bike, we know she ripped her leg open playing air soft (those thing hurt) loves swimming. likes fishing (not afraid to handle worms there is a video of her digging up worms and feeding them to her ducks) instead of barbie dolls she had monster high dolls. She just may come back at the bully with fist,teeth,claws and shoes.

  • @richardoky
    @richardoky 11 років тому

    I remember a lot of Lisa's post and this was talked about on her fan site and I never heard of any one mentioning Jackie was punched in the stomach. After she was on AGT she was very popular with the whole city of Pittsburgh and I believe that she was on summer vacation on her audition. They just about had the whole school in the gem to watch the final. No bully would want to be know for punching Jackie at that time.

  • @bruceh7211
    @bruceh7211 11 років тому

    A couple of years ago in a tweet, Jackie/Lisa said she was punched in the stomach on the playground at school. That was shortly after her first AGT performance. I sure wouldn't call Jackie a liar, would you?
    There are a couple of discussions going on about this, but the fact is, if you believe Jackie, which most do, she was bullied. Doubt it will ever happen again with the hefty bodyguards she has at concerts, plus lots of fans.

  • @richardoky
    @richardoky 11 років тому

    I am sorry but I think Jackie was cornered into talking about being bullied and she just brought up childhood disputes. She only went to the 5th grade before cyber schooling. She always stated how much she loved school even to a point that she would cyber school in school just so she could be with her friends. She was always in school projects cheer leading, singing and in plays.

  • @holywells
    @holywells 11 років тому

    Her life, while she was attending a public school, was perhaps typical for someone who was outgoing, gracious, and popular, and the people who were trying to bully her were obviously of a very negative nature. Her videos still attract a few verbal bullies and are usually rebutted instantly by her legions of fans. She is now the reigning queen of classical crossover music worldwide with an amazing future ahead of her. So, where are those who used to bully her? On the outside, looking in!

  • @chip11sheff
    @chip11sheff 11 років тому

    At school bullies hit on those they perceive to be weak or successful. Because she has a nice nature she may have been seen as weak if she did not retaliate. Nowadays it is more the Jealous cads who cannot stomach her success. Our Jackie will walk tall through all of them

  • @dolfen7

    Jackie has such a positive and forgiving nature that bullies could never stop her from achieving her dreams. All who have been bullied listen carefully to what she has to say. And if you are a bully listen even more closely. Jackie is a great roll model.

    Jackie is a great talent but this is nonsense. Everyone goes through this and it make us all stronger. I'm not promoting it but it is a reality of life. People get picked on, deal with it. Stop trying to change reality into your little world because your little world might not be reality.

    • @bruceh7211
      @bruceh7211 10 років тому +3

      It's absolutely not nonsense. Kids are bullied, and as Jackie once said in an interview, 'kids can be mean'. Her older brother, Jake, had a rock thrown at his head. Jackie was punched in the stomach by a boy on the school ground. She said that kids love to pick on the Evancho kids.
      It's a major problem is high schools, as well as primary schools. I spoke with the principle at my old high school and asked if they had a bullying problem there. She said they did so I mentioned this video. She hadn't heard of Jackie so I sent her this and a couple of other videos of her singing. She said she'd have the teachers play it to their students.
      This video has helped many deal better with the bullies, and has also caused some bullies to rethink why they bully other kids and hopefully stop. Nonsense? Nope! Sure bullying is a reality, whether one is in school or an adult. This is just another example of how Jackie's reached out to help others in her "little world," which is not at all little. She may be little in stature, but she's huge in her talent and her willingness to help others.

    • @pabalouch
      @pabalouch 10 років тому

      It is nonsense. Everyone has been bullied in there life. As a freshman, I was routinely beat up by a certain senior. It gave me strength . I learned how to defend myself and at one point was not bullied whatsoever. It is nonsense because you think that through regulation you can prevent this behavior. Well I have news for you, you can't busy body. It is going to happen whether you like it or not. It is how people handle the situation that is important. What's not important is you control types who think they can mold a society into some image of so-called equality. You do more harm than you know jack off.

    • @pabalouch
      @pabalouch 10 років тому

    • @RGold-pf2sj

      It doesn't make *everyone* stronger. There was a news story not long ago about a 15-year-old girl who killed herself because she couldn't take the harassment by her peers any longer. The school authorities either could not or would not do anything about it. Silence is consent.

      I find the opposite to be true. I was bullied all the way through high school by people who should have had their asses beat or put in jail because they were never given boundaries by their parents.
      So unless you're saying that not teaching your kids respect for others is how they are treated badly at home, I'd have have to disagree with you.

  • @H4ckRn00B

    Sounds more like she was TEASED rather than bullied.
    Rich kids can't be bullied! How can someone with such rich parents ever be seriously affected by teasing (sorry, "bullying")?
    This talent was hers to waste.

    • @bruceh7211
      @bruceh7211 10 років тому +13

      Jackie's parents are not rich, but rather middle-class Americans living in the Pittsburgh area. It was more than teasing, and she expressed that in a tweet a couple or so years ago. She was punched in the stomach by a boy on the playground after her AGT appearance. Your comment, "this talent was hers to waste" is completely nonsensical. One's financial status is irrelevant when it involves bullying. Jackie's doing quite well and has the complete support of her family, friends and fans.

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" (true sometimes but not always) We're thankful that you've come away from such negative experiences stronger and, as you've said, "a very determined person" to follow your dreams, to be a good role model, and to bring so much joy and pleasure to this poor needy world :) Remember, too, that bullies, and others that do bad things, are not just "horrible people" but humans trying to make it through life, like all of us, but with special problems, needs, broken dreams, etc. We can pray for such people, whether we can be of help directly or not, even while we strive to avoid being harmed and pray for deliverance from evil. Wishing God's continued blessings for you and yours, dear Jackie; you are in the prayers of thousands or millions of us fans! :) Love, oldmusicguy of S E PA

    Bullying is a major problem with kids around the world. Kid who is bully has big issue at home or has some issue. Then that bully eventually get bullied or in worse case beaten severely. That is vicious circle of revenge and anger. Best way is to leave that person with his own devises. It start to eat himself out in the end if he does not change, in the social adaptation quickly enough. Law of Causality.

When I was in school some kids had a problem with other kids whose lives were considered to be so "structured" that they actually knew what they wanted to do from one minute to the next, what they wanted to accomplish. It was like, "why aren't you loose and aimless and have attention deficit like me? You must be an alien, I need to punish you for being different." Yeah, seriously.

    After you become famous, the bullying and assaults get worse. That is why many famous people have bodyguards and why the president has most of the secret service as his bodyguards that protect him from bullying.
    Fortunately she is now homeschooled and cyber schooled so she is getting an outstanding education free of bullying. With some exceptions, especially non urban areas, there is nothing good about public schools with their lack of well-rounded socialization, where indoctrination is substituted for education, and where officially there is zero tolerance for bullying while unofficially it is ignored and no written reports on complaints. That way they claim the incidents didn't happen.
    The solution to bullying by a school superintendent in Philadelphia was "a pamphlet on how not to antagonize black students." To get an understanding of how common bullying is in public schools, Google "bullying in schools statistics."

      Jackie has bodyguards at all her concerts, plus a lot of fans who'd tackle a threat in an an instant. No, she doesn't have full-time bodyguards. She doesn't need that when she's not performing. She does always have a parent with her when she or her siblings go to the mall or something, or one of her friends' parents.

      Jackie *was* cyber-schooled for a time, but since Jan. 2014 she has attended her public school regularly. She notes that in high school "kids are more mature" so she likes her current learning environment. To my knowledge, Jackie was _never_ home-schooled.

    How can someone so precious and sweet be bullied like that!? People are cruel.

      Especially people (kids) with insecurities, as Jackie says, "those who don't have anything going for them." "Fighting their way to the top" is Jackiespeak for being focused on the future, in contrast to many other kids who just live in the present.

    This is Tim O'Shei; I started the Live! Starring ... You! interview program and oversaw this interview with Jackie. Thanks for sharing the interview with your former school. If you can let me know the school and possibly the counselor's name, I can send more information along too. You can message us on UA-cam or use the contact form on the LiveStarringYou website.

    What a powerful message: people who are determined to be successful are "not afraid to be who they want to be." This from a 13-year-old. It's pretty hard to improve upon that.

    I think you mean "moral fortitude." Moral turpitude means being IMmoral.
