I use overwintering sets to get an early onion harvest, because I practice relay planting with them in my trailing squash beds, planting at the far ends and getting them out before the trailing vines reach them.
November is the month of never any rest time 😂😂. Awesome update Jim I’m not growing and sowing a lot. But it’s good to see what others are doing. Have a spectacular week, Ali 💨☔️🇨🇦
Thanks Ali. Sometimes it's best to relax. I'm one of the crazy ones that likes to get everything planted 😂 by now I know mostly what grows on my plot and what doesn't so I am able to narrow it down to selected crops. That doesn't stop me trying to grow those difficult ones like broccoli though
Glad I helped in some way. It's such a busy month! But hopefully the rest of winter is a time we can take a step back after getting the dirty jobs done now 😊
Have experimented with growing some brassicas in 7cm pots, planted some in the garden in autumn, had the rest in the tunnelhouse garden in Zone9A New Zealand, planted 7cm pots last week of July which is equivalent of January in the UK. Today harvested first cabbage from the July plantings, pulled the earlier planted ones they were tiny and feed to the chooks. Thanks to UA-camrs like yourself, you have encouraged me to expand my knowledge.
Sounds great! I like to keep things growing in the winter and want to grow more winter veggies from next year especially those to add to hearty stews for the winter! Happy growing 😊
Curious about the micro greens. November seems an odd month under grow lights as I grow them with trays on top to aid germination for at least 4/5 days then the last 2 days in the light to make them go green. I grow them in coco coir, misting them from the top & then bottom feeding to prevent them dampening off. Be interesting to see what you do.
November is so full on! So warm this year though man! We just been out with the fam watching fireworks, it was so warm still I was shocked! We don't reallly have frozen grounds till same December. We are 9a which is much warmer than the surrounding areas due to the smog lol 😅
Yes it is very mild right now. Which is funny after the cool, wet summer. I think we will be having frost very soon though. I aim to have the allotment packed away by December. Hopefully!
Over the past few weeks I've put garlic and onion sets in, and transplanted a rhubarb crown and some lettuces that a plot neighbour gave me. I also sowed some Meteor peas into root trainers in the polytunnel last week, but no signs of germination yet. I've only been gardening for a couple of years and this is the first time I've tried growing anything over winter, so it'll be a bonus for me if I get anything! 🤞
Can you sow supermarket garlic cloves, or is it best to get from a nursury? I read in a book you can just break apart a supermarket garlic bulb and pop them in the ground, but that book was from the 1970s and I wondered if modern commercial varieties are cultivated to not do this.
I'm trying onions from seed now November I grew from boxing day and January February and they all were golf ball size so thinking if I grow them now they have more time to grow
You're tempting me to get mine sown now 😂 my seed order hasn't arrived yet though. I've found however, that for me if I sown them earlier they just sit there and stay small and don't grow. It's only when I move them to the greenhouse and it warms up when they actually get a move on. Usually after sowing at Xmas, they get a proper move on from March/April onwards. So they're sitting around for 3 months or so looking like grass 😂
@@downtoearthwithjim mine are at the crook stage so will move them into the polytunnel soon then plant them in the ground to stand over winter when they get a little bigger
I like to use up old/going out of date seeds, especially brassicas, as microgreens instead of throwing them out! 😊
Very useful video. Thanks Jim ❤
Excellent video. Only started growing this year and am taking the big step of signing for an allotment plot tomorrow.
Go for it! You will love it, one of the best things I ever did 😊

You must have better organisation skills than me then! I would try something like that but I'd end up with them clashing most likely 😂
Micro greens video, yes please.👩🏻🌾👍🤗
I think I'll release one through the winter, possibly!

I'd love a microgreen video, please Jim. It's something I'm definitely interested in 😊
noted 😊 I'm going to try and get one done in the winter, hopefully!
@downtoearthwithjim Thanks for that Jim.
Yes please 2 microgreens
Hey Jim, Such a help to get your guidance on jobs for November. Many thanks

Great video Jim and lot of useful information on what to grow in November, happy gardening. Sam
Are you planting any of these this month? 😊 Happy gardening!

8b here on the Washington coast. Similar climates….

hi Jim, I would be really interested seeing a video on microgreens. Thanks for this video.😊
I'll be planning a video in the winter, potentially 😊
What does each holder measure. Is it 7x5 or 6x4 inches
Hi. Just wanted to ask what size container do you use to store your seeds packets in. Thanks
Christina
I store them in photo organizer boxes with their own compartments. Each compartment is around 3/4 of a litre in capacity i'd say
Muzak. 👎👎
