    With paychecks shrinking and growing student debtloads, many say medicine isn’t a good field to get into. Zuckerman explains why it’s still worth it.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    JOSEPH ZUCKERMAN:
    Dr. Zuckerman is chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases and the Walter A.L. Thompson professor of orthopaedic surgery at the NYU School of Medicine. He was also elected the 2009 President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
    A graduate of Cornell University in New York and the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Zuckerman completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington and a fellowship at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in addition to duties as a visiting clinician in shoulder surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
    Dr. Zuckerman is recognized internationally as an expert in shoulder surgery and hip and knee replacement. Dr. Zuckerman has served as President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and has published over 250 scientific articles. The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) presented Dr. Zuckerman with its Clinical Research Award in 2002 and he has also received the “Teacher of the Year” Award on five separate occasions from the residents at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:
    Question: Why should someone become a doctor today?
    Joseph Zuckerman: I'll speak personally now. It would always bother me in the last few years as practicing medicine has become more bureaucratic, more difficult, more red tape, more paperwork and such, and maybe not as financially rewarding as it used to be in the past because things have changed. When I hear a colleague say, "I would never tell my son or daughter to go do medical school now. It's just too hard; it's not what it used to be." Well, I don't want to seem too Pollyanna-ish here, but I think being a physician is one of the greatest things you can do.
    I have a son who is a second-year medical student at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and when he told me he thought about going to medical school, I thought it was the greatest thing in the world, I encouraged him to do it. He could do whatever he wanted to, but would I ever discourage them from ever being a physician? No, I never would. Because all these other things, notwithstanding, everything we hear about from the time you walk into the examining room to talk to the patient to the time you leave, that is an opportunity to be valued and cherished. Right? Because the relationship you develop with the patient is very powerful, is very meaningful. The people who should be physicians should recognize the power of that relationship and that interaction. If you do that then we would never even think about discouraging somebody from being a physician.
    Question: What trends concern you in your field?
    Joseph Zuckerman: I think the trends that concern me in orthopedics are probably those that applied to medicine in general. Because of the changing nature of healthcare you have to see so many patients, more patients than before, in order to basically balance the books of your practices and things that it takes away from each and one of those interactions. Each one of those individual interactions, and I think there is something that is lost there.
    There is a tendency for surgeons to be seen only as procedurists; operate, take care of them and then were finished. Right? It's great to be able to operate and improve someone's quality of life like we do, but it is the interactions that I think are important. I'll see 30 to 35 patients in the day and it's a long day. But when somebody tells me they see 60, 70, or 80 patients in a day I say, boy, I mean, that's difficult to do in a meaningful way. So that concerns me when I hear that.
    Question: What does it take to be a top surgeon?
    Joseph Zuckerman: I think that a lot of it is, talent, but character is a very important thing. Now let me take you about professionalism in medicine. We can teach individuals we have one of the largest residency programs in the country; 12 residents a year, 62 orthopedic residents in a five-year program. Almost without exception, we can train them to know what they need to know to be an orthopedic surgeon, learn how to operate and the important procedures in orthopedic surgery, and we can even teach them a little...

    I don't understand why people say you lose so much money. You don't! Say you become an oncologist/hematologist making the median of $270,000. $270,000-33% from taxes = $180,900. Say you dedicate $20,000 a year to debt = $160,900. With a budget of ~$5,000 a month ($60,000 yearly) = $100,9000 left to bank. How is that not a lot of fucking money? Plus benefits and prestige. And if you invest...you make a shit ton. That's why about half of physicians are millionaires. Don't let these idiots discourage you with debt.

      With Obamacare rolling in, it is uncertain how much physician pay will be cut. Malpractice costs are also projected to go up in the future. The calculations you put out in this post is not representative of "take-home pay". There are additional costs in practicing medicine in America.
      Do what you love, but if what you love leads to barely making a living, then what you love will become what you hate.

    "We come unbidden into this life, and if we are lucky we find a purpose beyond starvation, misery, and early death which, lest we forget, is the common lot. I grew up and I found my purpose and it was to become a physician. My intent wasn't to save the world as much as to heal myself. Few doctors will admit this, certainly not young ones, but subconsciously, in entering the profession, we must believe that ministering to others will heal our woundedness. And it can, but it can also deepen the wound."

    You should still become a physician says the man who payed significantly less for his education than current students, earned more than a physician ever will, and needs a new generation to relieve his aging self of his patient load.

      floyd brown Respect is the one reason that will surpass the thousand cons. So what if a physician does not make as much money as they could with much less training, much less debt and much less education? People respect and love them, they put their entire trust and their life in their hands. Some people even give doctors a godly status. That enough is worth more than any money you can ever make. When a person refers to someone as “doctor” they are automatically giving them SO much respect. In this world anyone can make money, and yes money is necessary to make living in this world a lot easier and happier BUT respect is one thing that is not easily earned. It is one thing that doctors will always have though, regardless of how much their pay may drop in years to come. Respect is everything.

    this is a very encouraging message. I am in the process of applying to medical school now and boy is it stressful ! I am 19 year old thinking of over a million other things I could be enjoying my youth doing, but nothing compares to the anticipation for the day I can put on my white lab coat as a Doctor. Though this road is a long one with plenty of obstacles and self doubt every step of the way - I still manage to see beauty in the struggle...I greatly appreciate videos like this expressing the reality of medicine that many do not notice. It show the humility of the profession, something that is often overlooked.

      +Mansi Joshi Absolutely no! You getting into medical school already shows that you are capable of becoming a excellent doctor, especially since no one in your family got into that field! You should be VERY proud of yourself! Please don't let one person who regrets his life choices discourage you.Being a doctor is obviously wasn't his calling in life and he now realizes it.However, that doesn't mean it isn't cut out for you! If you have a strong passion to be a physician, you can do it! You can easily be the first doctor in your family! :)
      I said I wanted to be a doctor when I was little.Since then, I anxiously went back and forth on whether or not it was right for me. Which was so dumb because I wasted so much time that I could have used to study and prepare myself early.I now realized that part of my reason of existing is to become the best( efficiency wise as well as moral wise) doctor I can ever possibly be.No one in my entire family was ever a doctor either. I have two cousins that are nurses; no one else dared to enter the medical field.I was scared just like you because of that reason and more. I've never prepared to study to be a doctor until recently and I'm 16.I consider that late to start studying for a career like a physician.However, that isn't going to stop me; I love that career to much to let it go this time.I'm going to study my butt off and pray to The Father(what everyone calls as God). Therefore, I will get into my dream medical school, graduate from it and live out my long lived dream! You can do the same if you are determined. What helps to stay motivated is to speak things as if they already are( affirmations).The same power that's in The Father also resides in you! Farewell, Dr. Mansi Joshi! :)

It seems to me like the people who chose to become doctors without having those family expectations influencing them must have a lot of passion, and they must really feel that it was their calling in order to go to such great lengths to become a doctor.

    I am currently majoring in health information management for my undergraduate degree. I plan on getting my doctorate degree in public health within the concentration of epidemiology and bio statistics, but I feel like it is not enough, and I am taking the easy way out. Most of the doctors that do take their lives, are psychiatrists, if I am not mistaken. I've been inspired to hematology/oncology, due to the passing of six-year old Miyah Telemaque Nelson, who suffered from Burkitt's lymphoma. I am afraid of the debt and misconceptions of being a doctor, I do not know to cope with always being compared to others. In the state of Florida, particularly the university that I am attending, you can only change your major about three times. I was recently a pre-pharmacy student, my first semester after high school, I was taking seven class with seventeen credit hours. Coming out of high school, I did not know how to really study for exams. I did not do well my first semester so I decided to leave the program because I felt as if I could not live up to the expectations of the pharmacy, which is the most prestigious program at the university and is known all over the country. If I was in the pharmacy program as of today I would be taking eight classes with eighteen credit hours. I am deal with a lot of self-esteem issues, not just in my personal life, but most of all in my college life. In the past and even now, I would always dream of becoming a doctor, especially to help cure cancer in bodies of adolescence. But, I am not sure if I can live up to the expectations and longevity, of specializing in hematology/oncology.

    It is worth noting that this doctor cites the doctor-patient interaction as the most powerful aspect of practice (I wouldn't disagree), but then he goes on to say that he is obliged to see 35-40 patients in a day. I commend him for managing such a heavy patient load - in addition to time in the OR, dictating charts, and managing e-mails, phone calls, plus hospital rounds, practice admin, committee and continuing ed meetings - but I don't see how he can do all of that w/o sacrificing greatly on the 'power' side of the equation.

      As a future doctor myself I say it is worth it, just having the knowledge to make someone else feel better, to understand what is happening inside a person's body better than even that person does is domething incredibly rewarding, and knowing that you have that knowledge from a molecular level to a macroscopical level and a clinical level is something that no other carrer can grant you, if you're doing it for the money it definitely won't be worth it, neither if you think you'll do it because it is easy but if you do it for helping others and the hunger for knowledge it will definitely be worth your time I swear, I don't imagine myself doing anything else in my life, and I'm sure there are lots of people who think the same way or can think the same way and these kind of discouraging comments will drive them away from trying to be part of this circle of carefully selected people we call physicians!

      If you haven't started college yet, then I would advise you to do the following.
      Get you Bachelors in nursing, because if your not ready for the medical school ( because you need hours, G.P.A is to low, or etc) then at least you can get a job in the health care field, then work and study what you need to do in order to get into medical school, if you still can't then keep working as a nurse. After you worked about two- three years, you can apply for P.A school. Becoming a P.A and later trying to go medical school helps cut 2 years of your 4 years that you need for medical school. ( if you became a P.A). If you didn't want to take the P.A route then you can go for your master's as a nurse and then apply for medical school. Please don't get a bachelors in biomedical science, chemistry, etc, Do something that can get you a job at the end of four year at least.
      Another tip, Study chemistry right now. Like memorize everything in chemistry and never forget. It will make your life much easier in the future. you can buy a chemistry book on amazon for like $10 ( it will cover like general chemistry one and two). Never buy books from school, always check online for a free pdf version first ( will save you $$$).
      These are all the things I would do if I had a second chance. Hope this helps.

      Lydia Washington When you were 10? if you say that the last time you ever wanted to become a doctor was before starting medical school, i would understand, but if you don't have any motivation, why do it? Lots of medical students do it for the money, but at least it is a motivation. Your parents can encourage you, but if you are doing it solely for them...you just can't be happy.

    Right now I'm trying to get into a 4 year Registered Nursing degree program for September, I haven't decided if I'd rather be a Doctor or a Nurse Practitioner. What draws me to the field is the science; I love learning about biology, and medical school would give me a deeper understanding of the body. On the other hand, if I went the NP route I'd be able to start working faster, still make decent money (less than a doctor, sure, but still a decent amount where I live), and still be learning about and applying biological sciences. I also live in Ontario, Canada, which is the worst province in Canada to apply to medical school in, so my chances of getting into an NP certificate program are much better (I'll still need at least A's to get into either program, but NP certificate programs don't demand 4.0's the way most med schools seem to these days).
    I still have many years to think about this decision, but it's tough. My biggest concern about the NP route is that I'll spend my career feeling like I settled for second best, and I've already made that mistake enough times in my life. On the other hand, I don't want to waste my time and money on a dream that's unattainable, especially since I can't afford to study overseas. If I go the med school route, it's in Canada or not all.

    • @emilyx903
      @emilyx903 8 років тому +1

      +DWSimmy I think you answered your own question. (I'm in the same boat). But it sounds pretty obvious that deep down you want to do med, and you're just rationalising becoming a NP for reasons like time, entry requirements, etc. These things are not important in the long run. Becoming a NP will still take work, so if you really want to med, go for med! I think NP would be a great career and very rewarding, but I can't help but feel that if you ever considered becoming a doctor instead, you might in the end wished you'd gone for that instead.

    Hello!
    I'm extremely passionate about the process of empowering individuals by alleviating health problems, as well as offering ideas and techniques which enable individuals to be more independent, self sufficient, happy and satisfied with their life.
    However, as I look at today's approach to western medicine, I fear that values being instilled into students may be originating from money. This is why I feel hesitant to become a medical doctor...I don't want to devote only 15 minutes to my clients, I want to sit with them, identify the underlying causes for their ailments, and avoid prescribing medication that only treats the symptoms...I wish to implement a more holistic approach.
    What are your thoughts?

      Snake1n A good sense of humor, being able to make people laugh, can be a great trait to have as a doctor. Being able to make patients smile, being about to joke with colleagues. I think just as long as you don't take it too far. As long as you keep the professionalism, I think it's great. Have you ever heard of Patch Adams? He was a doctor they made a movie about (with Robin Williams). Humor can help patients in many ways. Go for it, you might just have what the profession needs! Good Luck!

    My doctor grabbed me by the wallet and said, "Cough!"
    The Doctor called Mrs. Cohen saying, "Mrs. Cohen, your check came back." Mrs. Cohen answered, "So did my arthritis!"
    The Doctor says, "You'll live to be 60!" "I AM 60!" "See, what did I tell you?"
    A doctor says to a man, "You want to improve your love life? You need to get some exercise. Run ten miles a day." Two weeks later, the man called the doctor. The doctor says, "How is your love life since you have been running?" "I don't know, I'm 140 miles away!"
    The patient says, "Doctor, it hurts when I do this." "Then don't do that!"
    The doctor says to the patient, "Take your clothes off and stick your tongue out the window". "What will that do?" asks the patient. The doctor says, "I'm mad at my neighbor!"

    "Doctor, my leg hurts. What can I do?" The doctor says, "Limp!"
    Doctor says to a man, "You're pregnant!" The man says, "How does a man get pregnant?" The doctor says, "The usual way - a little wine, a little dinner...."

      +Mary N, GPAs tend to be lower in engineering than other fields, and that's bad for med school applications. You can try biomedical engineering, perhaps, though that's an interdisciplinary branch of engineering rather than a primary one. Also, doing unrelated undergraduate degrees before applying to medical school is an American thing; the rest of the world has a different system, and it doesn't allow this approach.

    • @Charlie-Cat.

      People need healthcare, so the demand is up. However, doctors these days can no longer survive as solo practitioners because the overhead is huge. It takes over a decade of study to become a doctor and the costly debt to become one is in the six figures. Once finally out, if a doctor decides to go on their own, they need to buy their equipment, pay for their medical malpractice, buy a stupid electronic medical record thanks to big daddy government, spend money to make sure they are HIPAA compliant, hire staff, rent or buy an office etc all the while dealing with entitled patients who think they do not really need to pay their bills.
      So yes, doctors are still needed, but it makes no financial sense to become one. People are still going to medical school because of the love of the profession, but I hope they are ready to become employees of either a large group or a hospital because there is no way to survive. And to add insult to injury, you still have people that do not appreciate the tremendous sacrifice it takes to become a doctor and they go around thinking doctors are overpaid. These same people however never complain when someone who entertains them makes millions.

    All very nice coming from an American professor of orthopaedics with a likely whopping 7-figure salary

      @Eunnahyuk 10 років тому

      Chantu Bantu Well if thats your opinion , i think doctors who regret there decision , chose to be doctor not to save lives just for the name of it or maybe coz they were forced to med school .. who know, who cares ~

    • @chantubantu9381
      @chantubantu9381 10 років тому +1

      han chan yea.. i agree with you.. the only reason you should go for it is you really want to serve people.. NOT if you love science of it because its all following protocols, not much science; NOT if you want good lifestyle; NOT if you are thinking about money; and NOT if you're not willing to sacrifice the peak years of your life for medicine and ultimately serving people..

    • @hannaxoxo12
      @hannaxoxo12 8 років тому

      not for the first 10 yrs, you probably lose more in debt unless ur an img (like me) but thats a whole other discussion.

    • @joshdavis7486
      @joshdavis7486 8 років тому

      no, doctors are in debt for 20+ years because of student loans. That being said, the main reason why people become doctors isn't for the money

    • @hannaxoxo12
      @hannaxoxo12 8 років тому

      Asdfasd Asdfasdf Not if you go overseas to an affordable accreddited school, like I'm doing. I'll be graduating debt free.
