Good evening. To add to your story, my 2X Great-Uncle, John Walley, was a Captain in the Veteran Reserve Corps who guarded Mary Surrat and other co-conspirators while the trials took place. The VRC were assigned to different prisoners each day. John said that John Wilkes Booth body was held on the ship for so long that it became impossible to autopsy, so it was dumped over the side of the ship! Also, he was with Mary Surrat on the day the sentences were given. When told that she would hang, she asked, "For what?" A priest who had come in, asked if he could pray for her and she covered her head, turned toward the wall and was silent. Those in the VRC who guarded the prisoners were not allowed to witness their execution. General Hancock, who was head of the VRC, was very troubled that he had to execute a woman.
Interesting info. Never gave any thought where the hanged bodies went. Bit bizarre on Booth dumped in the river but I believe it could easily happened in the spirit of practicality. By that time Booth would've been so decomped there really would be no reason to autopsy other than as a formality. Everyone knew what he died from so they wouldn't have learned anything new. Thanks for sharing.
Very interesting story. That picture of Lewis Powell is such good quality, I would never have thought it was from the 1860s. Thanks Squeegee for finding this story for us.
Thank you Ron for telling this very interesting story. As you mentioned, we always hear about Lincoln being assassinated by John W. Booth, and not the bigger story behind it. This was my first time hearing about the rest of the conspirators and the roles they played in the whole deal. Thanks again Ron for this great story.
Great story Ron, that includes an interesting side-note relative to history......a passion of mine . My wife and i are avid collectors of 17th and 18th century English antiques with a focus on the period of King George III of Great Britain. In addition to various furnishings and artifacts including written correspondence and signatures, I have a lock of his hair. I know... It may sound somewhat morbid but is interesting, in any case. I was also formerly a collector of Civil War artifacts with many coming from Gettysburg. I came across a section of pin-striped fabric that was from a dress belonging to Mary Todd Lincoln. I framed it and gave it to my granddaughter to prompt her interest in history. Lastly, you mentioned John S. Mosby,...I was a friend of a man who knew John Singleton Mosby. Mr. Phillip Liebmann was a young man and student who grew up in the same town in Virginia as Col. Mosby when Mosby served as a foreign ambassador for the U.S, government in the early 20th century. About 45 years ago, I had the pleasure of "shaking the hand of a man...who shook the hand of Col. John Mosby"...Mr. Liebmann had some fascinating recollections. Sorry for belaboring my experiences but I really did like this story.
What an interesting story. I’ve seen his picture before but I’ve never heard that incredible back story. It’s actually tragic. He was only 21 when he died, he’d fought on both sides of the War between the States. I bet his mind was so twisted. Thanks Ron!
It's sad that a young man like Lewis Powell got caught up in that...war is a terrible thing, especially the war between the states when it was brother against brother....
Wow Ron, What a story! I appreciated the history lesson, as I never heard about this man nor his attack on President Lincoln's Secretary of State. It's sobering to think of the fate of such criminals in those times facing such horrible deaths for their crimes. The photo of Payne in prison is quite jolting too. But the part of the story about his head/skull being missing and then eventually interred with his body thanks to the efforts of his great niece after its unusual discovery strikes me as a poignant expression of redemption after so many years. Thanks very much for sharing this story with us!
Interesting to hear of someone who switched sides during the Civil War. I have a relative who also fought for the Confederacy, then for the Union. Thought that was rare, but maybe not?
I had not ever known this story, thank you so much for such a detailed and interesting story. That cemetery, that tree is so beautiful with the sprawling limbs. Glad no one has tried to alter the tree.
Thank you Ron for another interesting history lesson. I had never heard this story. Going to go back and listen from the beginning. My battery died and so I came in at 27 after.
Many thanks, I've always wondered about this guy. Even though I've read a hundred books about the war it's so difficult to place yourself in their reality.
Hello from snowy Wisconsin .i love hearing the rain . .Crazy an historical story . Thank you Ron for another great amazing story .Everyone have a great werk

Doing good here minus the rain here in Chicopee Massachusetts can't wait until later on to watch this 😊 sending you lots of hugs Destiny from me and Katrina to you too.
Such a fascinating story! I've always thought that picture of of Powell/Payne was so eerie too, that gaze is so direct and unflinching. The discovery of his skull is absolutely bizarre! Glad that it was re-interred there with his family, seems right.great history for us and so well told! Excellent job Ron ❤
Great story Ron and Lewis Powell birthday is 9 days sfter my birthday...April 14 is mine and his is April 22 That was interesting to hear and he was goid looking young man... take care Ron and have a great week ahead!...Mary M from Arkansas 😊❤.... Loved that he was a animal lover ! I have 1 female cat.. Maxine 😺.... Rip Lewis and thank you for your service 💪🪖🥾🥾.
What a story! Never heard it before, and your telling of it made it so interesting. I’m still thinking about that tree, though. Jeez, Mother Nature is incredible, isn’t she.
I'm a 69 year old native Floridian and I've seen quite a few of those trees with the twisty, turning branches during my lifetime. One thing that they have in common is that they were all oak trees.
Oak trees, really?! Wow those branches and such I wouldn't have guessed that. Thank you for that information, I've got a start in looking at specific species. I'm on the opposite coast so I've got lots of pines and maples on our property.
Thanks Ron! Interesting to hear the story of how all these men played a part in the assassination and the conspiring between them all. Take care, be safe and have fun!
Great Vider. Have you ever done one on Tom Horn? He was hung in Cheyenne and is buried in the Columbine Cemetary in Boulder, Colorado. His trial was fixed. They retried him in the 1990s and brought in evidence that were not used in the 1st trial. And found him innocent.
Great story love the American History. So this poor guy is dig up at least 4 maybe 5 times🤦🏻♀️ let’s hope he’s resting in peace finally. Thank you once again Ron ❤
When a rain started I was worry about massing up your curls…😜…love the trees and a Spanish moss affect…beautiful…what a story! Whou! Lots of information…I still don’t know how an earth you remember all of it…brilliant!
Wow, what an awesome view into history!! Thank you Ron. I had no idea that it was more than Booth! I just got done watching this, it's been several weeks since I've been able to catch any of your videos. Catching up tonight!! Love all the history that you and other subscribers dig into. The stories were so amazing. Just saw the one about the 12 year old boy. How sad. Saw his picture at end of video, and I couldn't hold back my tears. Thanks for ALL you do.
Thanks Ron for the story. I've read about him...but there's details I never knew. Pretty horrific way to die... Justice was done..but still.. wow...horrible way to die.
At the start, when you leaned on the trunk of the tree to get out of the rain, I thought I saw a huge multi-legged bug right next to your shoulder! I thought - oh oh. But no, I guess it was Spanish moss. lol! What a story! What a great memory you have! The body's will to live is great, I guess why the struggling while hanging. A headless corpse - jeez whiz. I also wonder why the woman was hung...guilty by association? Have a great day! 🙂
FYI- Just finished the book you recommend Sundown at Sunrise! I really liked it. It is the kind of book you can’t forget because it really happened!! Thanks!
You are a natural storyteller Ron. I’m sure you’ve been told that before. Sometimes I watch your videos twice in case I missed something. I hope your camera is waterproof!
Lol, Mother Nature is full of surprises. Water is one form of purification the other is by fire. Enjoy yourselves, Sir. Stay safe Sir & everyone. Rest in peace everyone in the arms of our Lord. Thank you for the history lesson I may have heard of him but many decades ago in school.
Everything I've read about the story states that Lewis handled the hanging bravely. Such a shame he got mixed up with the wrong people. So much hatred between the North and South. Fantastic video as always. Cheers🍻 P.S. Brittany Smith was killed in a car accident along with her brother on New Years Eve of that year. R.I.P. 🙏
Wow what a story! Do you think possibly the photographer that took his picture there on the boat managed to get his head?? He was so fascinated with him……paid one of the people involved with the burial to give him his head, then when he was done with it put it with the Indian relics? Creepy but possible! We’ll never know for sure will we? Great story Ron!! Take care!! ❤️
This was good listening and interesting as well. Thanks so much for taking the time to tell us the story Ron. Im always learning something new when I watch your videos ❤️

John Wilkes body is in a cemetery.
I'm not sure if anyone commented yet but the young lady's grave you pointed out: brittany and her boyfriend Zac were killed in a car crash.
Thank you for sharing that 👍

Lewis was so handsome!
The picture that you showed of him seemed so modern!!!
Yes, he was very handsome. So sad.
