This is how we played the game as kids too. Now, many decades later, I needed a refresher course in how to play. Thanks for the video, it all came back to me as I watched. I have a beautiful area down by the river for the course that’s much larger than needed & a very nice croquet set I bought years ago but never got around to using until now. Wifey & I will be playing this evening & weekend :) Can’t wait to “send” her ball screaming across the lawn to the edge of the river FAR away from where she needed to be, that was always my favorite part of the game!😈
for those of you in the UK or Australia or NZ, this is American Croquet - generally, we play Association Croquet which is quite different and a lot of these rules don't apply, and the singles game is very different.
I'm 27 and I've only heard of croquet from Max and Ruby when I was a kid. Years later, and now I'm suddenly interested in playing. Thanks for the video!
My neighbor when I was a kid made his own croquet set and also had stripes and solids with a 8 ball and a giant astro turf pool table in his backyard and it worked.
Realizing I've never played this the correct way in my life. In fact, I think I like the way we did it better. We would just set up the little wickets all over the place and make our way through them. More like a Goofy golf course than anything else.
idk if we made this up or what. but we played with a rule where once you make it through the whole course uou become “poison” and you have to go hit the other balls to eliminate them. makes it more fun.
The fun part about backyard croquet is the freedom you have of creating rules lol - i honestly never knew about the bonus shots when hitting other players ball.
Been looking for a set for years and Finally got a set! I already knew the rules, but wanted to make sure I remember it correctly!!! I did... Back yard rules are the most fun because...... Other than changing the "established" rules... You can invent more... I confess that usually the "made up rules" involves drinking alcohol! Lol
Excellent video. Am I correct in thinking that when you reach the stake on the opposite side of the course even if it bounces off the stake you are free to hit it as normal? (I originally thought it had it be touching the stake and a person should strike the stake the get the ball to move)
LOL... it's been 35+ years ago or something, that I played it as a kid, but I tought it was just creating a tortuous route and playing from 1st pole to last pole... Seems like a WAY bit more rules hehehehe... Greetzzz from Belgium
I mean having the two right next to the beginning is kind of pointless don’t you think? Like I mean if you make the first one you most likely will make the next one which is 6in away?
I'd probably rather go last. When we played as kids that bonus shot to send the opponents ball flying was brutal. Going first means your ball is ripe for everyone else to hit at it
YEAH I KNEW HOW TO PLAY THIS BEFORE.....Basketball, Baseball, or Football!!! *Had my weekend battles at the Watkins house around my Kindergarten days. 😂😂😂😂 ON EVERYTHING I LOVE
When I was a kid we played a little different. After going through the course you become poison, When poison if you go through a wicket or hit a stake you are our. If you hit another ball they are our. If you hit another poison ball you have to send them through a wicket or into a post to get them out. Last one left wins.
Field set up is not well explained. How far from the stake does the first wicket need to be set, and then how far is the second wicket from the first. Also what is the distance to the Diamond shape wickets etc etc. ? Good video though just need some more information. Gave it a thumbs up.
I've always been intrigued by this game but I don't like the penalty hit where you put your foot on your ball and whack the crap out of the opponent's ball then take your turn. I'd imagine that can start a little conflict. (?)
You're really good at explaining how games work, i was wondering on how to play "2 Indian Card Poker" can you please make a video explaining it? Thank you for reading!
Yup. Played as a kid with family on the pool. (Which was demolished buried and topsoiled lol) Havent played since. Gonna play today. Needed a refresher. This was perfect Thanks :)
I thought EVERY KID played this in the 70s, that’s when I realized my CHILDHOOD wasn’t NORMAL. I played basketball, football, and baseball but this was on the REGULAR. *Told you my LIFE was a complicated one and I still would go to the PROJECTS to visit my Grandmother & relatives. SO AS A KID I KNEW other kids didn’t have what I had!!! So it caused ME TO ACT OUT. ON EVERYTHING I LOVE ❤️
This is a garden game, and nothing like international rules croquet, where you have 'hoops' rather than ‘wickets', and have just 6 of them. Also the mallets, balls, and playing surface are of a much more 'professional' type.
Got confused near the end. It all made sense at first and then you just lost me. Could be because I smoked a really good joint in between. I’m hoping I can figure it out by July 9. I think it looks fun for a party on our lawn. Thank you I’m going to watch it again. And possibly again and again. All those colours. 🇨🇦🥰
The version of the game that no-one plays. Why not explain Golf Croquet or Association Croquet? Also, most players swing the mallet between their legs.
If another player makes a comment that upsets you, a bonus shot to the player's head is awarded. If you hit another player's head, unlimited bonus shots are awarded to their head.

I don't want to have to say association croquet every time I want to refer to that game. I'm going to shorten it.
Ass. croquet
@@blizzardwizard8318 very funn
@@blizzardwizard8318 do you know it's sound you don't like playing crogeut
My grandmother had a croquet set. I don't believe I've done anything with croquet in like 24 years or so, but I'd try it again someday.

I love you so much, this has made me want to go outside and have actual life experiences!
Trying to figure out how I got here after crying about my due assignments.
I hope you this video helped in the end with finishing them :)

That’s how I played when I was younger
Same. Just like at the Queen of Hearts course in Alice in wonderland- you know, with the flamingo mallets and hedgehog balls… 🙃😂🦩🦔
Yep, that's how we played it too.
Yup. If you ask me, that’s the proper way to play. Keep it interesting.
I really needed to know how to play croquet so thank you good sir
**me watching so I can play croquet like they do in heathers**
Oml same i just rewatched heathers--
OMG SAMEEE
That’s why i’m here 😌✌️
Why are you exposing me??😂😂😂
Me here because I forgot how to play croquet because I started playing to be like Heathers

I found this very helpful 🙂
Thank you very much for the detailed explanation
While as a Brit I’m ashamed that an American hat to teach me the rules - Thank you very much! Your explanation was fantastic!
I remember that our family ENJOYED playing this game in 1941-1942 before moving to Makassar
We never play this peaceful. Someone’s always tossing a mallet accusing another player of cheating. It’s what makes the game lol
how do you cheat in croquet?
Any fights like in hockey?
@@chrisballas3356 Nah, everyone leaves with the teeth they came with.
Yes I can confirm this is the correct way to play.
The whole family would play back in the day
Great 'structions! This backyard game is hilarious with a bunch of friends.

So the rule about contacting a ball and then going through the wicket on the same shot…do you have to go back and hit it through the wicket cleanly?
This is like golf for beginners?
Thank you! I had a set but never knew how to play
Nice now I just need someone to play it with
I do not know how I ended up here but I love it
I need to try this game at some point. Whenever that may be.
On sale at Best Buy today’s deal

I literally had to learn this for a theatre production(don't ask which one; I'm not saying.) so thank you very much.
Which theater production was it? Please tell me, I HAVE to KNOW!
@@jeffbell4434 Your sarcasm levels are off the charts, I'm impressed.
lemme guess, heathers?
Under no surcomastances can you hold down your ball when you shot away your oponents ball
Short, sweet and to the point…
So i rewatched heathers...
and uhm...I thought i’d learn cause of it..
Who decides who gets to be orange or the first one? It seems like whoever is first has the advantage.

I’m in Heathers the musical rn and I’m watching this for reference 😂

It was really helpful, I was over here trying to play croquet with my friend in our yard, LOL (boredom)
What if you go past the wicket? Do you have to send it back and hit it in
Nevermind
