Can you tell me if, when a colliery was shut down any of the inderground equipment was salvaged or it was all just left as being to costly to remove? When last shift stopped cutting coal did anyone ever go down again or was it just capped and sealed off? Old colliery where I grew up still had open shaft from closing in 1931 until at least 1956 or so when we kids used to stand at edge and drop stones down but I could never hear them hit bottom! It was eventually capped and a garage built over.
Hi, I am not able to answer your question. I made this slideshow from photos which were on my dads computer after he died. I haven't work or lived around mining communities, so I wouldn't know the answer to your questions, hopefully someone he may watch this video may be able to provide you with and answer. Thanks for you question and interest in my slideshow!
@@rosewhite--- I am in South Wales (Cardiff), my brother has been living up the valleys for a long time, I will see if he can get the answer to that question. When I was a kid, rivers, canals, woods and railway yards used to be our play grounds. I sometimes wonder how we survived without parental guidance. LOL.
@@Histoscape Same here. At 4 I used to wander around everywhere alone and with older brother used to investigate all local towns mills, railways... I was surprised to get to sec mod school at 11 and found other pupils never left their own streets!
A lot of pits in the Rhondda where I used to go occasionally with work, the guys up there told me all the equipment was left underground as it was cheaper than bringing to the surface
