it's designed for 20 gallon tank I think. my tank is 36 gallon. no fish, just cherry shrimp

You have no idea what your talking about! You have on your filter 2 filtration methods: a mecanical filtration(the sponge) and the chimical filtration(the charcoal)! You must use both!!

I do not have to use both. I used only the sponge and it got me the results I want

You dont have to use both. Many fish keepers dont use charcoal. In fact if you remove it you have more room for biological.
