- What exactly is polyphonic aftertouch and how can it affect sound design?
Enrique talks through the idea of poly aftertouch, and how to apply it to synthesizers for better and deeper sound manipulation and modulation.
#WeAreNovation
finally a proper explanation of what aftertouch does. cheers tinez
Glad you found this useful, Emily 👍🙌
I wish more tutorials or questions were displayed this way. Simple without an assumption of what a user's knowledge might be, but with enough information to satisfy anyone. Thanks!
Indeed. Born To Produce do videos like these, but they do charge :) However, I make a point of never taking free advice with music production. Not that all free advice is wrong, this guy seems decent and probably could charge if he wanted, just that your chances of getting quality knowledge hieghtens immensely when paying. Always check the reviews of course.
I never give free advice either because I'm not confident enough to charge for it. Except this...
The best explanation i could have asked for. Short and precise. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the quick explanation of Aftertouch. Today I learned that my synth does not have polyphonic aftertouch even though it does 6-note polyphony for voices. Subtle nuance there; glad to clarify the point of confusion.
Excellent definition and demonstration.
this guy's voice can help me sleep while my house is on fire.
U will not believe I have had this question for such a long timd
This prompted me to find out about modulation matrices. It opens up so many possibilities! Thanks for the clear explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
This was beatifully demonstrated,😊 and very helpful. I was reading thru the midi format and this helped me understand this feature perfectly.
That was AMAZINGLY helpful, thank you.
Excellent explanation. Thanks!
I was not expecting to see Ricky here but again he's got all the answers
The video I was looking for
Thank you!
Nice thorough tutorial got to give u props 🙏
This clears up a lot, solves a lot of problems I have with synths not being expressive like guitars, could do much more interesting and expressive rhythms with this without having to just play staccato
Hey Enrique, nice video!
Thank you! Exactly what I needed to know
Great explanation, thanks !
holy shit this is such a pleasing video to look at shoutout enrique
I watched many videos but this is clear
THANK YOU, TINEZ!!!
Great explanation!
AFTERTOUCH EASY EXPLAINED. THANK YOU!
Finally......got the answer . Thanks
Thank you!
Damn, I just suscribed to the channel of Ricky Tinez and binge watch a lot of the video there and ... he appears in front of me in another channel ! Is this a loop ? Am I stuck in the matrix ? (thanks for this explanantion btw, super clear as always !)
Thank you.
Great videol
Thanks dude.
Great. Thanks... .
Cuddling for synthesizers?
Strong Blade Runner vibes from the polyphonic example.
Can you do this with the Novation Circuit - using the Circuit as a PAT MIDI controller for external gear?
Thanks for Concise and very Useful explanation , could you please tell me, if the after-touch has been included in Yamaha PSR-SX900 and in Korg Pa900, Pa1000 and Pa3x & Pa4x ? Thank you in advance 🙏🏼
Glad you found this useful. Launchpad Pro can transmit aftertouch data to any compatible device but not all synthesisers respond to aftertouch. Afraid I'm not familiar with those particular synths but you should be able to find that information in their respective user manuals.

cheers man
Does the pads in the Novation Launchkey 49 Mk3 have polyphonic aftertouch like the one showcased in the launchpad?? Thanks
It's Ricky!
Are you planning on upgrading the SL MK3 keys with polyphonic after touch? Can the SL keys current after touch be used to create a vibrato affect?
Unfortunately, we can't comment on future updates, but yes, you can send aftertouch data that would then emulate a vibrato effect.
So if this is important, why isn't it a feature on the new Launchkey MK3? I'm wondering if I should get that or something with aftertouch.
Hello and thank you for this auto. Is the SL MK3 poly aftertouch?
SL MkIII's velocity-sensitive RGB pads have polyphonic aftertouch capability. The keyboard transmits channel aftertouch.
Necesito alguna página en castellano con un tutorial para hacer funcionar los pedales con el tyros 5. Gracias.!!!
So this works also on the novation impulse 61? (keys and pads?) ( I got one, but still a bit confused how to make it work(fl studio)
Not quite. Impulse’s keyboard is equipped with Channel Aftertouch, not Polyphonic. The pads do not output aftertouch data. If you need assistance, please contact our Support Team - bit.ly/NovationSupport
@@NovationTV Thanks.
Would modulating amp to velocity work as well?
Yes, when working with Peak, per-patch Amplitude Velocity control be set from the Envelope/Env menu.
.
Thanks...I thought all aftertouch worked this way. Press one key, get one aftertouch.
Essentially, yes that's right and are 2 different types of aftertouch - Polyphonic afterouch, as used by Launchpad Pro, allows all notes to transmit a different aftertouch value of their own which allows for very dynamic, expressive control. Mono/Channel aftertouch means all notes will transmit the same aftertouch value.
how do I apply aftertouch on my keyboard?
I saw this video was only 2 minutes long, and thought "how informative could it be?" Turns out, it only needed to be 2 minutes long. LOLOL
Now how about a Novation Polyaftertouch keyboard controller? Or even better, upgrading the Novation Summit keyboard? Yeah, I would pay for that...!
Interesting idea. Thanks for your feedback.
You all make the same mistake by not telling us which version of the Novation Launch Pad Pro supports Polyat, MK1. MK2, or MK3, or MK4. Still confused.
We're sorry if that has caused any confusion! There are only 2 Launchpad Pro. The original Launchpad Pro, shown here and Launchpad Pro [Mk3] released in 2020. Both benefit from Polyphonic Aftertouch and Channel Pressure.
Launchpad X also benefits from Polyphonic Aftertouch and Channel Pressure.
kinda cool but who actually uses this, in what context, and does anybody notice?
Aftertouch is a really powerful sound design tool. Common examples of aftertouch are adding vibrato or tremolo, or opening/closing a filter but it can be assigned a great many parameters. You could certainly use it to create very noticeable changes when performing live and recording.
